메탈 기어 솔리드 V 팬텀 페인(이하 팬텀 페인)을 플레이했습니다. 이미 PS4로는 한국어 지원이 확정되었지만, 전 그냥 PC판으로 플레이했습니다. 그리고 일본 개발사의 게임이니 음성은 일본어로 할까 생각하다가, 그냥 영어를 골랐는데요. 전 영어 쪽도 나쁘진 않더군요. 일단 PC판 이식은 상당히 훌륭하더군요. 최근 일본 게임들 중에서 PC판 이식을 날로 먹는 곳이 많은데 비교조차 되지 않습니다. 팬텀 페인에서 제일 좋았던 부분은 기초가 되는 전투에 있습니다. 비살상 중심의 잠입과 일반적인 전투가 다 재미있습니다. 또 이러한 조화를 지키려고 노력하는 게임들조차 몇몇 구간은 그 자유를 해칠 때가 있는데, 그에 비하면 팬텀 페인은 게임 내내 원하는대로 플레이할 수 있습니다. 이것만큼은 팬텀 페인이 그 어떤 게임보다 장점으로 내세울 수 있는 부분입니다. 이번 작의 핵심 중 하나는 마더 베이스 기반의 하우징 시스템입니다. 기지를 증축하고, 인력과 자원을 모아야 하죠. 기본적으로는 나쁘진 않습니다. 직접 왕래할 수 있는 마더 베이스가 점점 크고 넓게 증축되는 모습도 소소한 재미고요. 그런데 그 과정이 플레이할수록 지겹습니다. 거기다가 들어가는 노력에 비해서, 얻는 성과물들도 그렇게 신경 써서 만든 것 같진 않더군요. 얼핏 보면 다양한 장비들이지만, 실상은 같은 모델링의 장비를 능력치만 바꿔서 우려 먹은 수준이거든요. 거기다가 증축되는 여러 시설도 흥미를 일으키기에는 한참 부족하고, 오히려 왕래하는 데 한참 걸리게 만들어서 아예 신경 끄게 만듭니다. 뭐하러 마더 베이스를 그렇게 만드는지 이해할 수가 없더군요. 그래서 마더 베이스만 놓고 보면 그냥 단순 반복을 요구하는 몇몇 웹게임이나 모바일 게임처럼 보입니다. 무엇보다 이렇게 자금과 자원, 인력 확보가 게임이 치중되다 보니까 아주 자유로운 진행을 권하는 게임이 어느 정도 답답해집니다. 예를 들어서 그냥 무작정 적을 몽땅 다 사살할 수가 없어지죠. 마더 베이스에 필요한 인력을 모아야 하니까요. 그래서 전 폴톤 회수 시스템은 게임에서 너무 과한 영향력을 끼친다고 봅니다. 특히 자금을 벌어들일 수 있는 수단이 전투원 파견과 메인 미션과 사이드 옵스 뿐인데, 그 중에서 전투원 파견은 직접 플레이하지 않는 부분이니 넘어가고, 남은 두 가지 중 하나인 사이드 옵스가 지루하다는 점에서 문제가 있습니다. 그래서 전 어느 시점에선 그냥 사이드 옵스를 포기하고 빠르게 메인 미션만 진행하게 되더군요. 무엇보다 팬텀 페인의 제일 심각한 문제점은 오픈 월드 그 자체에서 나옵니다. 오픈 월드로서의 완성도가 수준 이하입니다. 새로운 장소를 직접 걸어가서 탐험해야 할 이유가 아예 없습니다. 자금은 그럴 시간에 마더 베이스에서 과녁이 쏘는 게 더 빨리 벌고, 자원은 컨테이너를 회수하는 시점에서 보이면 줍는 수준에 불과하며, 파 크라이처럼 적의 거점을 점령한다고 해서 게임 내에서 바뀌는 건 아무 것도 없습니다. 다시 와보면 같은 적이 또 배치되어 있을 뿐이고요. 이러니 메인 미션이나 사이드 옵스를 통해서 가게 되는 장소들은 다신 갈 일이 없습니다. 또한 임무 진행 중에 거쳐가게 되는 장소 외에는 눈으로만 보는 배경일 뿐이죠. 이럴거면 오픈 월드를 추구한 이유가 뭔지 모르겠네요. 그나마도 사이드 옵스의 상당수는 같은 장소를 계속 반복하고 있으니, 스플린터 셀이나 고스트 리콘 같은 게임들처럼 한정된 레벨로만 진행하던 게임들이 훨씬 화려합니다. 스토리텔링도 최악입니다. 특히 플레이하는 와중에서 등장 인물의 입으로 전달하는 연출, 플레이어(특히 전작을 하지 않은)가 배경과 과정을 이해하려면 등장 인물의 설명을 듣거나 오디오 로그로 확인해야 하는 전개는 시대에 뒤떨어진 연출이죠. 이야기가 끝을 향해가는 중후반부가 제일 지루하고 몰입되지 않습니다. 얼마 되지도 않는 캐릭터들은 단편적으로 활용되서 전작을 모른다면 도통 이해하기 어렵고, 그나마도 클리셰로 가득 찬 행동을 보면 정조차 들지 않더군요. 코지마 히데오와 코나미가 대립하면서 분명히 게임의 완성도에도 영향이 있었을 겁니다. 만일 그렇지 않았다면 더 완성도가 좋았을 수도 있겠죠. 그런데 완벽한 실패라 생각되는 오픈 월드 도입과 이야기의 완성도를 떠나서 풀어가는 과정조차 별로인 전개까지 고려하면 개발진의 능력에도 한계가 있지 않았나 싶은 생각이 듭니다. 개인적으로는 전투가 재미있었던 것을 빼면 마음에 드는 부분이 하나도 없었습니다. 리뷰까지는 아니라도 소감 정도는 써볼까 했지만 허탈해서 보류 중 이였는데 글이 올라 왔군요. 최대한 스포없이 감상을 남겨봅니다.
오픈월드로써는 미달, 잠입게임(?)으로 보면 합격, 메탈기어시리즈로 치면 최고라고 생각하고 있습니다. 특히 전투부분은 말씀하신대로 군더더기 없구요. 특히 좋았던 점은 상호작용인데요. 일괄적이던 AI가 플레이어의 행동에 따라 변화하는게 마음에 듭니다. 예를 들면, 헤드샷으로 적을 계속 죽이면 방탄 헬멧을 쓰고 나타나고 스모크를 쓰면 방독면을, 람보 놀이를 하면 중무장을 하고 나타나는 적들 등등, 최대한... 더 보기

시스템적으로 보면 쓰신 내용 대부분 공감합니다. AI를 가지고 노는 이른바 파고들기 요소를 좋아하는 게이머가 아니라면 그냥 지루하기 짝이 없습니다. 더군다나 2회차 요소 없음. 게임 달성율 100% 보상 없음. 하드코어 유저가 아니라면 한번 클리어하고 다시 진행할 이유를 못 느끼게 될겁니다.
스토리텔링 부분은... 개인적으로는 만족했습니다. 오디오 로그가 더 짧고 컷신이 더 길었으면 더 좋았겠지만요. 컷신의 길이는 실제 플레이 시간과 비율만 맞는다면 상관 없다고 생각해서요. 오디오 로그 중 몇몇 쓸데없이 설명이 늘어지는 부분 빼고는 크게 나쁘지 않았다고 생각합니다.
사실... 제일 문제가 되고 허탈한 부분은 스토리 구성에 있습니다.
이건 완성되지 않은 게임이나 다름 없습니다. 감독과 회사가 대립하면서 문제가 있다는 건 알고 있고 양쪽의 입장도 수긍하지만 그래도 이건 아닙니다. 그 동안 팬텀페인 트레일러나 예고를 보면 이 작품은 빅보스가 어떻게 타락하고 더보스의 의지를 왜곡하고 복수귀가 되는지 밝혀지는 시리즈의 완성편이자 사실상 마지막 메탈기어라고 할수 있는데.. 팬텀페인에서는, 솔직히 전혀 그 이유를 설명하지 않습니다. 안한건지 못한건지 이젠 알수 없겠죠. 단지 타이틀대로 팬텀페인, 환상통에 대해서만 제대로 표현을 했다는 생각이 듭니다. 그게 게임 스토리건 등장인물이건 직접 플레이하는 사람이건 말이죠.
계속 혹평을 하지만, 사실 정말정말 재미 있습니다. 계속 몰입하고 감탄하고 즐겁게 했습니다. 그리고.. 클리어 하고 나면 많은 분들이 저처럼 이건 완성되지 않은 게임이라고 느낄수 있을거라고 봅니다. 기대치가 없던 사람들은 만족할수도 있지만 그동안 기다려온 사람에게는 오함마로 뒷통수를 내려치는 기분이 듭니다..
