부제: Two Different Ways of Thinking Meggalians Effect. ----------------------------------------- 간만에 부서 회식하고 술 퍼먹고 뻗어있던 사이에, 또 한 번 파이어가 된 걸 보고 언젠가 써야지 써야지 하던 걸 결국 쓰게 됐습니다. 일종의 새 불판이라고 보시면 됩니다. 사실 주말에 올려야 되는데...삼공파일님이나 눈부심님처럼 곧바로 피드백이 어려울 수 있습니다. 주말까지는 최대한 해보겠습니다. 이제 여기서 싸우시면 됩니다.(응?) 저는 메갈리아라는 사이트의 탄생과정을 비교적 가까이에서 지켜봤고요, 현재도 어떤 메커니즘으로 돌아가는 지 흥미롭게 지켜보는 중입니다. 그리고 스타-로드님이 말씀하신 무한도전갤러리-오늘의 유머-여성시대 커뮤니티 간의 갈등양상도 거의 실시간으로 봤습니다. (저는 원숭이 사태로 옆동네 탈퇴를 결심했지만, 사실 서로 물어뜯는 문화때문에 이미 지난 4월말~5월초부터 제가 정착할만한 커뮤니티가 없을지 고민하면서 떠돌던 상태였거든요. 그래서 잘 압니다.) 메갈리아에 대한 저의 입장은 수 차례 다른 불판에서 말씀을 이미 드렸습니다. 눈부심님 글 댓글 중 거의 말미에 정리해 놓은 게 있으니 궁금하신 분은 그걸 보시면 될 듯합니다. 저는 여기에서 메갈리아가 정당하다 아니다, 옹호할 수 있다/없다를 말하지는 않겠습니다. 다만, 두 가지의 극단적 해석을 제시해보고자 합니다. '최고로 좋게 해석하고 의미를 부여하는'방식, '최악으로 평가하고 그 구성원리를 파헤치는' 방식. 이렇게 극단적인 두 가지 형태의 해석을 해보고자 합니다. 왜 이런 짓을 하냐면, 제가 볼 때 그렇게 양 극단으로 해석될 여지가 충분히 있고, 이 주제가 매번 파이어되는 이유는 본인이 그렇게 해석을 했든 안했든 이 양 극단의 분석/해석과 유사한 방식으로 각기 메갈리아를 받아들이는 탓이라고 보고 있기 때문입니다. 진실은? 그 양 극단의 어느 가운데 지점일 수도 있고 정말 그 극단일 수도 있겠습니다. 그 판단은 내리지 않겠습니다. 제가 가까이에서 오랜시간 지켜본 사건인 만큼 몇 가지 팩트는 확인하고 넘어가겠습니다. 이 팩트 역시 틀리고 의견이 다를 수 있겠지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 제가 오랜시간 각 사이트(커뮤니티)를 지켜본 결과 내린 판단으로 완전히 어긋나진 않는다고 봅니다. 팩트라는 단어가 지나치게 객관적임을 표방할 수도 있으니, 다양한 팩트들을 수집해 제가 내린 사실판단 이라고 해두죠. 1)메르스갤러리에서의 이른바 '미러링'은 메르스를 여성들이 퍼뜨렸다는 여혐 언술에 대한 반발에서 시작된 게 맞다.(그렇지 않다는 의견이 이 글 댓글에서 제기됨) 2)메르스갤러리로 흘러들어간 사람들, 그리고 메갈리아 활동을 하는 여성들 중에 (구 혹은 현)여성시대 회원은 분명히 있다. (무한도전 갤러리에 상주해봤는데, 거기에는 '종군'으로 불리던 여성들이 여성시대의 게시글을 상시적으로 캡쳐해 퍼오고 있었고 그런 캡쳐글들을 통해 볼 때 메르스갤에 동조하면서 자신이 그 사이트에 다녀왔다고 밝히며, 그 중독성에 대해 말하면서 즐거워하는 회원이 상당했다는 것 등에서 출발한 추론.) 3)여성시대 회원들은 오유에서의 '여론조작'에 대해 분명한 책임이 있다. 심지어 '자신의 친구가 오유회원으로부터 성폭행 당했다'라는 내용을 이슈화시키려다가 오유회원들의 신고(성폭행범을 잡자는 취지)로 거짓임이 탄로났다. 오늘의 유머가 메르스갤(메갈리아)에 대해 갖는 반감은 따라서 두 가지 층위로 분석할 수 있다. 하나는 그들이 가장 경멸하는 '일베식 화법'을 쓴다는 이유이고, 둘째는 자신들의 사이트에서 '패션갤 닥반(닥치고 반대)', '연예인 루머 유포'등을 주도하던 일부 여성시대 회원들이 그곳에 있다는 것 때문이다. 4)무한도전 갤러리는 '여성시대에 대한 반감'이 오늘의 유머 회원들보다 더 크다. 그것이 정당한 분노인지는 판단할 수 없지만, 그래서 여성시대 회원들이 많이 흘러갔다고 보는 메르스갤러리와 메갈리아에 대한 반감 역시 크다. --------------------------------------------- I. 메갈리아(구 메르스갤러리)에 대한 최고로 긍정적인 해석: 자유주의의 틀을 깨라. 1. 그녀들은 왜 열광하는가?: 억압된 사회화 와 적응된 선호를 공격하다. 메르스갤, 메갈리아에서 나타나는 '미러링'의 원리는 이미 많은 이들이 지적한 대로 '여혐'의 언술과 논리에 대해 '그대로 돌려줌'으로써 그 충격을 증폭시키고 강한 메시지를 전달하는 것입니다. 삼공파일님이 적절하게 파악하신대로, 그 공격의 대상은 의외로 일베가 아닌 오유를 주축으로 한 '한국의 리버럴'이 됩니다. 아니 그래야만 합니다. 왜냐하면, 성차별의 마지막 보루이자 가장 깨기 어려운, 그리고 대부분 그것을 여성에 대한 억압이나 차별로 인식조차 하지 못하는 철옹성은 사실 노골적 성차별주의자가 아니라, 모두를 포용하는 강력한 '자유주의'이기 때문입니다. 놀랍게도 서구에서도 이와 유사한 논쟁은 이미 벌어진 바 있습니다. 배리 라는 자유주의 학자와 아이리스 영이라는 다문화주의 학자 사이에서 벌어졌던 논쟁입니다. 배리 아재는 세상 모든 차별과 부당함은 '자유주의의 원리'를 통해 해결할 수 있고, 중요한 건 사회경제적 격차이고 이를 '기회의 평등'을 제공하고' 원칙과 예외'를 적절하게 시민적 공론장에서 결정해 적용하는 것이라고 주장합니다. 여기에서 중요한 건 '운'과 '선택'입니다. 즉, 운이 없게 출발선이 잘못돼 있는 사람들에게는 사회가 최대한 출발선을 맞추도록 '보정'을 해줘야하지만, 다른 조건이 동일한 상태에서 본인이 '선택'한 것은 본인이 책임을 질 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 개인주의와 자유주의는 그렇게 만나고, 그 개인들이 만들어내는 사회의 구성원리는 '시민적 국가성'과 '공공여론', 그리고 '연대'가 됩니다. 하지만 '차이의 정치'를 주장하는 아이리스 영 아지매는, 이 '선택'이라는 지점에 대해 굉장히 큰 의문을 던집니다. 여성들과 같은 사회적 소수자들은 스스로 주류사회의 담론과 이념에 받아들여지기 위한 '본의 아닌'. 혹은 '자신 스스로도 인식하지 못하는' 상태에서 '적응된 선호'중에서 '선택'을 하고 이는 '억압된 사회화'를 통해 구조적으로 불리하게 선택된 것들이라는 것입니다. 홍차넷에서 어느 분이 말씀하셨는지 모르겠는데 niceness라는 개념을 제시하신 분이 있죠. 저는 굉장히 좋은 단어였다고 생각합니다. 남성들이 짜 놓은 'niceness'의 틀 안에서 제법 편하게 안착할 수 있는 구조가 존재하고 그 구조에 안정적으로 편입하기 위해 스스로를 자신도 모르게(혹은 알면서도) 적응 시켰고, 스스로 아무런 차별도 없다고 생각하면서 살아간다는 거지요. 제가 볼 때, 메갈리아가 공격하는 건 바로 그 지점입니다. '너희들이 자유롭게 선택했다고 믿는 그것이 사실은 구조적인 억압에 의해 한정된 선호에서 나온것'이라는 걸 여성들에게 일깨워주고 '어떠한 차별도 반대한다'고 주장하는 자유주의자 주류 남성들의 논리는 깨는 것이죠. 메갈리아가 갖는 혁명성과 일종의 '통쾌함'은 바로 이것입니다. 일베와 싸워서는 얻을 수 없는 효과, '리버럴 주류'에 대한 공격과 '차이의 정치'를 끄집어내고 '구조적 모순을 지적'함으로써 여성들이 무의식적으로 가져왔던 '억압된 사회화'와 '적응된 선호'의 틀을 깰 수 있는 기반을 만드는 것이죠. 메갈리안들 중 일부는 아마 이 논리와 의식으로 무장하고 이를 설파하는 것이고, 동조하는 다수는 이렇게 복잡한 이념의 메커니즘은 모를지라도 자신도 모르게 금기시된 모든 것을 해체하는 과정에서 얻는 쾌감과 깨달음, 특히 스스로 차별이라 인식하지도 못하고 있던 구조적 차별에 대해 알게 되고 이를 벗어남으로써 느끼는 해방감을 만끽하는 것입니다. 또한 '입장바꿔보기'는 때에 따라 기존의 차별과 억압의 구조하에 있던 사람들에게는 엄청난 깨달음을 주고 역시나 즐거움을 선사하는데요, 메갈리아라는 단어가, 여혐의 상징과 같던 하나의 사건(메르스를 여성이 퍼뜨렸다)에서 시작됐고, '이갈리아의 딸들'에 나오는 '입장 바꾸기'의 관점에서 출발했다는 점에서 그 네이밍 또한 굉장히 뛰어나다고 볼 수 있습니다. 어쨌든 이는 그동안 자유주의자들이 비교적 '오만하게' 가져왔던 도덕적 우위를 공격할 수 있는 힘이 되고 한국사회에도 커다란 발전의 양분이 될 수 있습니다. 한국사회 좌파들 일부가 메갈리안을 옹호하는 건 바로 이 지점때문이라고 생각합니다. 2. 그래서 어떻게 될 것인가?: 가장 아름다운 미래 다소 충격적인 방식이지만, 메갈리아는 존재 자체로 한국사회에 큰 의미를 던집니다. 그동안 주류 자유주의 담론 안으로 흡수돼 왔던 '반성차별', '양성평등'의 논리는 다시 독자적 생명력을 갖고 놀랍도록 사회 곳곳에서 여성에 대한 차별과 혐오를 막아내는 강력한 무기가 됩니다. 이 구조를 공격하는 사람들이 주장하는 바는 겉보기엔 극단적이어도 결국 사회 주류 담론에서도 포용할 수 있게 되면서 많은 여성들은 스스로 굴레를 벗고(자신이 이 선택을 했다면. 물론 안할 수도 있고 그러면 그것 역시 그대로 의미가 있지만) 여러 측면에서 '여성해방'의 출발점에 서게 됩니다. II. 메갈리아(구 메르스갤러리)에 대한 최고로 부정적인 해석: 혐오의 정치학, 그 재미를 깨닫다. 1. 그녀들은 왜 열광하는가?: 스스로 깨인자가 된 기분, 그리고 공격이 주는 쾌감 메갈리아에 그녀들이 열광하는 건 그 어떤 것으로 포장해도 결국 '처음으로 느껴 보는 공격의 쾌감'입니다. 하지만 그 심연에는 또 다른 논리가 작동하는데요, 이는 1980년대 시작돼 1990년대까지 대학사회에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤던 '주체사상'(얼마전 해산된 통합진보당류)파의 형성/확산과 매우 비슷합니다. 그리고 주사파는 사실 '종교성'이 강합니다. 저는 메갈리아에 이런 측면이 강하다고 봅니다.(이렇게 해석하는 입장일때에는...) 왜 뜬금없이 그 두개를 연결시키느냐? 그 로직을 한 번 따라가 보겠습니다. 저는 도대체 왜 저 말도 안되는 북한추종 논리에 사람들이 현혹되는지 항상 궁금했습니다. 그런데 잘 관찰하고 그들과 논쟁하다보니, 그 이면에는 다음과 같은 메커니즘이 있다는 걸 알게됐습니다. 대한민국에서 정상적으로 주류 교육과정을 밟고나서 대학생이 되면 다수의 사람들은 '국가주의자'가 됩니다. 한국의 교육과정과 사회 전반에 강하게 보수주의자들이 만들어놓은 프레임입니다. 이는 '시민적 덕성에 기반한 애국심/정체성'과는 약간 다르지만, 어쨌든 애국심을 가지기도 쉬운 상황이 되지요. 그럼 여기에 주사파는 아주 쉽게, 그전까지 '일본/북한'등으로 쏠려있던 적대를 '미국'으로 바꿔냅니다. 교과과정에 잘 나오지 않는 미국의 만행들을 마구 끄집어내고 취사선택해서 분노를 촉발시키죠. 그리고 주사파 특유의 품성론으로 인해 사실 술마시면서 이런 얘기를 하는 친구들이 참 인간적으로 또 괜찮은 사람들이기도 합니다. 그렇게 어울리는 과정에서 '나는 한국사회 분단의 구조적 모순을 깨달은 자'라는 생각을 하게 됩니다. 순식간에 자신의 의견에 동의하지 않는 사람들은 '계몽의 대상'이 되죠. 다른류의 진정한 좌파가 되기 위해서는 엄청난 양의 학습과 고민을 필요로하는데, 주사파가 되는 건 '애국애족 의식'이면 거의 충분하니까 그 파급력도 세지요. 논리도 단순하고요. 그렇게 빠져들다가 보면, 분명 문제가 있다는 걸 어느 정도 아는 시점이 돼도 빠져나오지 못하고 자기합리화를 하게 됩니다. 그리고 마지막에 김일성 교시 등을 읽으며 일종의 '신앙고백'의 형태로 완전한 주사파로 거듭납니다. 이 과정이 보통 3~5년 정도 걸리죠. 그리고 계속 그렇게 살다가 이석기 같은 BB탄총 혁명론자까지 되는 거지요. 어쨌든 저는 메갈리아가 거의 같은 메커니즘을 갖고 있다고 봅니다. 여성주의를 잘 몰랐지만, 어느 정도 그걸 메갈리아에서 학습하고 나니 막연하게 갖고 있던 여러가지 차별이나 문제점(실제 그 차별이 성별에 기인하지 않은 것일 경우에도)에 대한 모든 원인은 결국 '남녀문제'로 치환되고 '성차별 및 여성억압구조'의 문제로 환원됩니다. 놀라운 경험입니다. 세상을 분석하는 툴을 갖게 되고, 자신이 매우 깨인자가 되는 기분. 그 이후의 로직도 비슷하고, 제가 주사파 되는 과정이 종교적 속성이 강하다고 지적했는데, 마찬가지로 '고백', '탈치' 등의 단어가 사용되는 맥락을 보면 정말 비슷해 보입니다. 그리고 이렇게 형성된 집단의식으로 실제 '여혐혐'의 명분아래에 다양한 공격을 감행하게 되는데, 원래 인간은 이런걸 매우 좋아하거든요. 사실 그래서 엄청 즐거운 겁니다. 깨인 자가 돼, 명분까지 갖고 다른 집단을 공격하고 있는데, 일부 좌파지식인들은 '기특하다'고 까지 하거든요. 뭐 이렇습니다. 2. 그래서 어떻게 될 것인가?: 최악의 미래 본인들이 그렇게 즐기는 사이에, 초기에 일부 동조하던 사람들조차 등을 돌리게 되면서 상황은 묘하게 흘러갑니다. '주사파'가 '진보'라는 단어를 선점하면서 처음에 이득을 꽤나 누렸는데, 결국 그 '진보'라는 단어를 선점했기 때문에, 다른 진보진영에게 X물을 끼얹고 사라지게 됩니다. 마찬가지로, 극도로 강한 공격성과 자기만족적 행태는 그나마 한국사회에서 지금까지 수많은 페미니스트들이 쌓아왔던 노력에 타격을 주는 상황을 만들어낼 수도 있습니다. '여성주의? 그거 막 남자 욕하고 그러는 거 아니냐?'라는 논리가 퍼져나가면, 그리고 그들의 행태에 피로감을 느끼는 '중립지대 사람들'이나 '리버럴'들이 등을 돌리기 시작하면 '여성주의'의 이름으로 제기되는 매우 다양하고 적절한 담론과 문제의식이 '가장 강력하게 눈에 보이는 특정 집단이 그 이념을 표방했기 때문에' 제대로 사회에서 담론형성을 하지 못하고 일베 등에 의해 공격받거나 주류 리버럴에게 외면받을 수 있다는 겁니다. 그러면 지금까지 쌓아온 여성주의의 성과도(쉽게 사라지지는 않겠지만) 흔들릴 수 있습니다. 주사파가 진보를 표방하고 다니면서 진보에 타격을 준 것과 같은 효과가 나타날 수 있다는 겁니다. -------------------------- 이렇게 두 개의 분석을 저 혼자 써놓고 보니, 제 자아가 마치 분열된 것 같습니다만, 최대한의 긍정 해석과, 최대한의 부정 해석으로 놓고 보면, 왜 이 문제가 자꾸 파이어되는지 알 수 있을 듯 합니다. 이 글의 결론은? 둘 다 완전하게 현상을 설명하지 못하지만, 진실은 저 중간 어디쯤 있을 것 같다는 겁니다. 일부는 정말 깨인 여성주의자들이고 그들이 메갈리아의 담론형성에 기여했을 겁니다. 그런데 그에 휩쓸려 움직이고 있는 또한 일부의 여성은 진짜 여성주의 관점에서 제대로 사고하고 있는지 의심되기도 합니다. 그리고 메갈리아가 취약한 건 바로 '반인권성'입니다. 즉 남성성기 비하의 손모양과 한국남성 전체(그리고 자유주의의 품 안에 서식하는 그들이 보기에 전혀 깨이지 않은 여성들)를 집단적으로 공격하는 양태는 일베와 일베 아닌 집단을 구분하는 최소한의 기준선 '인간에 대한 최소한의 예의'라는 측면에서 매우 불리하게 작용할 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그녀들의 행태는, 그리고 그 폭발성에는 분명히 지난 10여년간 인터넷 담론의 상당부분을 차지했던 '김치녀', '여성혐오'담론에 대한 반작용인 부분도 큽니다. 그래서 다시 한 번 결론은....이제 저를 공격하세요.(응?) 저게 \'자유주의\'를 공격하는건지, 아니면 남성 중심적 사고관을 공격하는건지는 구별해야한다고 봅니다. 자유로운 선택이라고 믿었던 것들이 거짓이다 라는 것은 자유주의를 공격하는게 아니라 자유주의 속에서 내재된 다른 세부 이데올로기를 공격한다고 생각해요. 메갈리아는 그 점에서 남성 중심적 사고관(정확히 말하자면 1인간=1남성 으로 기준이 잡힌 사회 전반, 가령 남성이 기준이기 때문에 생리는 \'휴가\'의 사유가 된다거나, 남성이 기준이기 때문에 여성의 임금은 언제나 남성 임금수준에 비교해서 기준지어진다거나 하는 것들)을 공격하는 거지 \'자유주의\'자체를 공격하는건 아닌 것 같아요. 왜냐면 메갈리아가 주장하는 포지션은 명백한 자유주의거든요. 자유주의 내에 존재하는 가려진 부자유를 공격하는데, 그들이 주장하는 것 역시 자유주의 이념하의 평등이니까요. 저는 그런면에서 메갈리아의 정치적 효과는 그냥 \'더욱 더 자유주의적인\' 이라는 부분이 있는 것 같고.. 이게 자유주의의 단점을 극복해낼 대안사회 이념같은게 있지는 않다고 생각해요. 그래서 저 곳을 저는 극우 보수주의자들의 일베처럼 스트레스 풀이 공간 이상의 역할을 하지 않는다고 생각하고요.. 그리고 이건 상당히 애매한 지점이기도 한데, \'적응된 선호\'와 \'억압된 사회화\'는 성과 상관없이 이뤄지거든요. 여성은 여성이기에 이뤄지지만 남성은 동시에 남성이기에 이뤄집니다. 여타 사회적 억압들(성에 의해 발생하는)을 벗겨내고 개별적 관계내에서만 보더라도 양성/동성간의 호감이나 관계의 역할들은 이미 사회적으로 구성되어져 버렸죠. 마치 \'인간\'이 사회적으로 이미 \'시민\'으로 구성되어 버렸듯이. 물론 그 안에 차별이 존재하는 만큼 그 억압들을 없애야 하는 것은 맞는데, 이건 메갈리아가 하는 방식으로는 지적하지 못하는 부분이라고 생각해요. 페미니즘이 \'여성해방\' 과 동시에 \'인간해방\'임을 주장한것도 꽤 된걸로 기억하고, 그걸 위해서는 경제-정치체제 투쟁과 원인분석에 있어서 맞물리는 부분이 있었기에 연대했던것도 오래된 고루한 이야기일텐데(오히려 그 연대과정에서의 반작용으로 아예 페미니즘의 독자노선을 구축하고 그랬지만 경제-정치적 운동과의 연대 없이 존재하는 페미니즘은 결국 반쪽짜리 투쟁이 되어버렸다고 생각합니다) 그런 부분들 없이 다시 \'할 말 신나게 할 수 있음\'이 과연 그런 모순들을 정말 지적하고 있는지에 대해서 저는 그렇지 못하다고 생각하고 있습니다. 특히 미러링?같은 전법을 통해 상대에게 정곡을 찔러봐야 혐오감만 증가시킬 뿐이고.. 게다가 그 정곡이 알려주는 지점은 젠더로서 규정지어지는 사회에 대한 해방이 아니라 한 쪽 젠더의 일방적인 해방으로 받아들여지게 하는 부분도 있어서 오히려 어려운 부분이 있는거 같습니다
