 알프스 3연타의 첫 스테이지였던 Stage 18은 전혀 예상하지 못한 흐름으로 경기가 펼쳐지면서 시청자들이나 전문가들이 경기 내내 조금 당황할 법한 경기였습니다. 저의 경우 어제 경기는 좀 이해가 안 되는 부분들이 좀 많았습니다. 아마 좀더 외국쪽 웹이나 언론을 보면 해명이 되겠습니다만 그럴 시간까진 없다는게... 그와중에 GC그룹은 생각외로 답답한 경기를 펼쳤고 그 결과 이번 TDF는 끝났다고 생각했던 한 명이 엄청난 이득을 챙기게 됩니다.  오늘의 코스입니다. 코스 공개 직후부터 퀸 스테이지(승부를 결정지을 가장 중요하고 힘든 코스)라고 뽑혔던 코스입니다. 프랑스쪽 알프스의 가장 유명한 업힐들, 꼴 디조아와 꼴 듀 갈리비에를 지나서 발로와흐까지의 내리막 피니시로 구성되었습니다.  이조아의 코스 구성입니다. 총 14km 중 5km 지점을 지나고 나서부터는 후반부에 살짝 존재하는 내리막을 제외하면 모조리 8.5%를 넘어서는 고된 업힐입니다.  브리앙송에서 2642m의 갈리비에로 올라가는 코스입니다. 거리가 굉장히 긴 데다가 꾸준하게 경사가 올라가기 때문에, 힘이 떨어진 선수들과 남아있는 선수들과의 차이가 확연하게 보일 것입니다. 갈리비에의 정상에는 보너스 타임까지 걸려있는데, 보너스타임의 경우 1등이 8초, 2등이 6초 3등이 4초로 알고 있습니다. 이후 피니시까지는 주욱 내리막인데, 지금 사실상 마이요 존느를 노리는 GC라이더들 간에 내리막에서 시간을 벌어낼 수 있을만한 선수는 없는 것으로 평가되기 때문에, 사실상 여기에서 시간차를 벌려서 정상을 먼저 넘는 선수가 피니시도 먼저 할 확률이 높습니다.  현재 종합선두 순위입니다. 알랑필립이 2주차에 약점을 노출한 만큼, 2~6위까지는 전부 격차가 사실상 없다고 봐야 합니다. 오늘부터 벌어지는 3일간의 알프스 스테이지에 모든 것을 쏟아부을 수 있는 자가 샹젤리제에서 마이요 존느를 입고 달릴 것입니다. 그 밑으로는 란다가 현재 폼이 좋고 발베르데가 받쳐주는 만큼 포디엄에 들 수 있을 것입니다. 나머지 GC들은 좀 어렵지만 어떻게든 순위를 올려보려는 노력을 아끼지 않을 것으로 예상되었던 하루.  경기 시작 전 이탈리아 선수들이 한데 모여 화합의 시간을 가집니다. 다른 경기들과는 달리 사이클은 선수들이 경기 내내 서로 얼굴을 볼 일이 정말 많은 경기입니다. 그래서 사석에서는 친한 선수들이 많죠. 그 어느 스포츠보다 동업자 정신도 요구되고, 때에 따라서는 정치(...)도 해야 하는 스포츠입니다.  경기 시작과 함께 BA를 시도하는 수많은 선수들이 있었습니다만 펠로톤이 경기 초반 적극적으로 막아냅니다. 워낙에 이런 스테이지는 도박적으로 질러야 하는 선수들(주로 리더가 망한 팀들), 미리 산악 트레인을 보내놓으려는 팀들의 도움선수 등 나설 선수들이 많기 때문에, 전략적으로 미리미리 막으려는 움직임이 강합니다. 그린 저지를 입고 있는 피터 사간이 BA로 나서지 못하자 적극적으로 BA들을 차단하면서 40km가 넘게 진행되는 동안 제대로 BA가 형성되지 못하는 모습을 보입니다. 당연히 경기 페이스는 엄청나게 빨라져서 첫 1시간 동안 46.5km나 달립니다... 여기 퀸 스테이지에 초반부라고 평지도 아닌데? 알프스의 멋진 풍경. 스타트에서 46km 정도 떨어진 중간 스프린트 지점은 그래서 스프린터 중에선 차지한 선수가 없이 그냥 지나갑니다. 현재 포인트 1위인 피터 사간과 2위 비비아니와의 격차는 85점. 피터 사간의 7번째 그린 저지는 사실상 결정됐다고 보면 됩니다.  물론 펠로톤도 계속 이렇게 정신나간 페이스로 달릴 수는 없으므로, 앞서 가던 34명을 놔주게 됩니다. 앗 하는 사이 4분 45초차까지 시간을 벌려낸 대형 BA가 형성되어 먼저 달리게 됩니다. 주요 선수로는 팀 이네오스의 도움선수 딜런 반 바를, AG2R의 스테이지 우승을 노리는 호망 바흐데, 역시 스테이지 우승을 노리는 바레인-메리다의 다미아노 카루소, 모비스타의 나이로 퀸타나와 안드레이 아마도르, 아스타나의 스테이지 우승을 노리는 알렉세이 루첸코와 욘 이쟈가레, EF의 강력한 선수들인 마이클 우즈와 알베르토 베티올, 미첼튼 스캇의 아담 예이츠와 다닐 임피, CCC의 클래식 리더 그렉 반 아버맛과 독주를 노리는 시몬 게쉬크, 팀 선웹의 니콜라스 아른트, 수달-로토의 티쉬 베눗과 산악왕 팀 벨렌스... 평소면 정말 강력한 조합입니다. 하지만 오늘은 GC들의 날이고, 이 모두가 싹 다 잡힐수도 있습니다. 보통 퀸 스테이지에서는 격차를 이정도까지 허용하더라도 후반부 페이스가 빨라지면서 마지막 업힐 즈음에서 선두를 잡아내는 경우가 많았거든요. 1등급령인 꼴 데 바흐의 정상에는 산악 포인트가 10점이 걸려있습니다. 현 산악왕인 팀 벨렌스와 GC로는 완전히 망해서 산악왕과 스테이지 우승을 노려야 하는 호망 바흐데간의 대결이 펼쳐지는데, 전초전에서는 벨렌스가 앞섰네요. 2위인 바흐데는 8점을 얻습니다. 하지만 이조아와 갈리비에 같은 HC급 업힐에는 1등급령 '따위'와는 차원이 다른 점수가 걸려 있습니다. 1위 40점 2위 30점 3위 24점 4위 20점 5위 16점... 해서 8위 4점까지. 벨렌스는 산악왕 저지를 지키고 싶다면 오늘 내내 분노에 찬 바흐데의 맹공을 견뎌내야 할 것입니다. 바흐데는 GC도 완전히 망하고 스테이지 승리도 협조해 주는 사람이 없어서 놓친 전례가 있어 지금 펠로톤에서 가장 열받은 선수일 겁니다...  뒤이어 꼴 데 바흐를 넘는 펠로톤. BA와의 격차는 7분 40초.  BA에서는 34명이 한 마음 한 뜻이 아니므로, 산발적인 어택이 지속적으로 이어집니다. 팀 선웹의 니콜라스 아른트가 스테이지 우승을 위해 BA에서 한 명이라도 솎아내 보려고 어택을 치는 모습. 하지만 10km 지나서 잡히더군요.  이번엔 CCC의 그렉 반 아버맛이 카운터 어택을 날립니다. 사실 반 아버맛은 오늘이 자기가 우승하기 좋은 스테이지는 아닙니다. 기본적으로는 클래식 라이더라 전문 클라이머들을 이길 수는 없어요. 하지만 CCC 팀이 워낙에 소득이 없고, 투르에서 뭐라도 해볼 여지가 있는 선수가 자신밖에 없는 상황에서는 0.001% 확률이라도 승부를 걸어야 하는 건 어쩔 수 없습니다.  이와중에 카츄사-알페신 소속의 닐슨 폴릿은 내리막에서 101.5km/h를 찍습니다 ㅎㄷㄷ... 이번 TDF 최고속도 기록이라고 합니다.  꼴 디조아의 모습입니다. HC급 업힐은 다 이따굽니다... 한라산보다 하나같이 높은 곳들이구요;  반 아버맛과 그를 쫓아온 트렉-세가프레도의 줄리엥 베르나르드가 이조아의 고된 업힐에서 BA와의 격차를 2분까지 벌려내고 있습니다. 하지만 이조아는 너무나 고된 업힐이고, 이 둘은 금방 추격조에 잡히고 맙니다. 그런데 펠로톤과의 격차가 8분 43초? 펠로톤은 뭐 하는거지...  그동안 정말 신기할 정도로 아무 움직임이 없던 펠로톤은 이제서야 모비스타가 움직임을 보이기 시작합니다. 며칠 전 미켈 란다로 재미를 많이 봤던 전술이죠. 선두에 아마도르와 퀸타나 보내놓고 낚으면서, 하이페이스로 죽죽 끌고 처지는 사이 란다로 이조아에서 초장거리 어택.  추격 그룹에서는 아담 예이츠와 호망 바흐데가 스테이지 우승을 위해 도망쳐 나갑니다. BA가 분열되기 시작. 루첸코와 퀸타나 등이 반응하지 못하는 모습.  GC그룹은 모비스타의 맹공격에 단 20명 가량만 남을 정도로 줄어듭니다. 생각 외로 힘을 못 쓰는 메인그룹. 이러면 BA가 성공할 가능성이 굉장히 높아집니다. 사견인데, 올해 펠로톤은 사실 예년의 투르에 비하면 끄는 힘이 약한 게 사실입니다. 지난 몇 년간 투르는 2주차 지나가기 시작하면 팀 스카이가 그냥 주야장천 경기 내내 끌어버려서, 이쯤 되면 TV에는 BA 선수 몇 명이랑 팀 스카이 선수들만 비춰지게 되는 게 일상 다반사였거든요. 제가 TDF는 별로 재미가 없다고 말하던 이유가 이것입니다. 올해는 팀 스카이의 트레인이 강력합니다만 경기 내내 끌어댈 정도로 예전같지는 않고, 현재 마이요 존느를 입고 있는 알랑필립의 퀵스텝은 산악 전문선수가 엔릭 마스 하나라 이런 경기에서는 펠로톤을 내내 끌 힘이 없습니다. 마스조차 컨디션 저하로 고생하고 있구요. 윰보 비스마 팀도 그렇게 트레인을 적극적으로 끌 의사가 없는 이 상황에서 뭔가를 해보는 팀은 모비스타와 그나마 팀 이네오스인데, 그간의 피로누적과 오늘 엄청난 더위+고된 스테이지의 조합으로 인해 생각보다 일찍 녹아내린 것 같습니다.  선두의 베르나르드는 GVA를 빡점놓고 혼자 도망치기 시작합니다. GVA는 곧 추격그룹에게도 따라잡혀서, 완전히 녹아 내립니다. 하지만 이조아의 정상에서 강한 선수들로만 추려진 추격그룹이 베르나르드를 따내고, 바레인-메리다의 다미아노 카루소와 산악왕 저지를 노리는 호망 바흐데가 정상에서 스프린트를 펼칩니다. 카루소의 승리. 하지만 바흐데도 귀중한 30점을 차지하여, 단숨에 벨렌스와의 격차를 좁힙니다. 자막에도 나가고 있습니다만 벨렌스가 뒤쳐져 있기 때문에, 갈리비에까지 이 페이스대로 가면 오늘 산악왕 저지의 주인이 바뀌어 버리게 됩니다. 바흐데는 명예회복할 방법이 이제 알프스의 스테이지 우승과 산악왕 저지 이거밖에 없습니다. GC로는 정말 답이 없을 정도로 망했기 때문에...  GC그룹은 모비스타가 끌어댄 덕분에 이조아에서 BA와의 시간격차를 3분 정도 줄여냅니다. 하지만 이조아의 내리막과 갈리비에를 앞두고 인원수가 너무 적어, 하이페이스를 유지하기가 어려워 보입니다.  이조아의 내리막에서 GC그룹은 결국 떨어진 인원을 조금 기다려 보충받는 길을 택한 듯합니다. 선두와의 격차가 다시 6분대로 벌어집니다. 선두그룹은 이제 단 9명만이 남아있고, 여기에는 모비스타의 리더'였던' 나이로 퀸타나가 포함되어 있습니다. 오늘 5분 정도의 시간을 벌어내 버린다면, 최소한 포디엄 경쟁선까지는 한 번에 복귀할 수 있을 절호의 찬스. 오늘은 중간에 녹아내리지 않을 수 있을까요. 퀸타나는 그간 이런 어택을 잘 가다가도 중간에 힘없이 페이스가 다운되는 모습을 많이 보여줬기 때문에, 이 날도 반신반의하면서 경기를 보게 되었습니다.  갈리비에를 앞둔 GC그룹의 모습입니다. 브리앙송을 막 지나는 거 같은데, 여기에서부터 팀 이네오스가 후반부까지 이 그룹을 끌게 됩니다. 2주차까지 힘없이 떨어져 나가던 이네오스의 트레인이 휴식기에 회복이 좀 되었는지 오늘 꽤 강력한 모습을 보이네요. 사실 이네오스가 강력한 것도 있긴 한데 오늘따라 다른 팀들의 그간 강력한 모습이 전혀 보이질 않았습니다... 피노도 오늘은 쉬어가는 모습이었고 란다도 적극적이질 않네요.  선두그룹은 그대로 갈리비에로 진입합니다. 반 아버맛과 마이클 우즈 등은 전문 클라이머들을 갈리비에 진입 전에 어떻게든 먼저 떼내려고 노력하는 듯한데, 마음대로 되질 않는 듯한 모습.  캠핑카들이 빼곡한 갈리비에의 모습. 피기님이 중계 중에 하신 말씀에 의하면, 이 캠핑카들은 '1주일 전(!!!!!)'부터 여기서 진을 치고 기다리고 있다고 합니다... 피기님이 2011년에 프랑스를 일주하신 여행기가 블로그에도 있는데, 일행이 캠핑카를 빌려 경기 4일 전에 갈리비에에 도착했는데 주차할 곳을 못 찾아서 엄청 고생하셨다고 합니다... 유럽의 투르 인기는 거의 미친 수준이죠. 갈리비에의 초입부에서 루첸코가 지속적인 어택을 시도합니다. 현재 선두는 이조아의 내리막에서 열댓명까지 늘었다가 9명까지 다시 줄어든 상황.  이후 5명까지 줄어듭니다. 정상까지 8km 남은 이 지점부터가 갈리비에에서 가장 어려운 구간입니다. GC그룹과의 시간차는 4분 35초. 이 5명중에 오늘의 영광스러운 승리를 차지하는 자가 나올 것입니다. 그리고 놀랍게도 지금까지 잘 붙어가던 모비스타의 나이로 퀸타나가 선공을 날립니다. 퀸타나 특유의 댄싱과 무지막지한 가속력으로 미친듯이 달아나기 시작합니다. 저 특유의 댄싱이 퀸타나의 장기로, 산악 코스에서 장거리 어택까지 가능했던 선수입니다. 2017년 지로 디탈리아 Stage 9에서의 어택 이후로 정말 오랜만에 보는 모습.  호망 바흐데가 어떻게든 따라가려고 애를 씁니다만, 퀸타나의 진격을 막을 수가 없습니다. 오히려 퀸타나는 시간이 지날수록 바흐데와, 그리고 무려 GC그룹과도 시간차를 벌리면서 달아납니다. 정말 무서운 퀸타나... 2017년 지로 디탈리아 2위를 이후로 전혀 활약을 보여주지 못했고, 작년에는 그야말로 추태를 보이면서 평판이 떨어질 대로 떨어진 퀸타나인데, 그럼에도 많은 사람들이 퀸타나라면... 이라는 기대를 하는 이유가 바로 이런 모습에 있습니다. 지로와 부엘타 우승은 아무나 하는 게 아니죠. 정상 컨디션의 퀸타나는 클라이머 중에서 가장 강력한 선수라는 평을 받는 선수입니다. 현재 알프 듀에즈의 업힐 기록도 약물 복용 전과가 있는 선수들을 전부 제외하면 퀸타나가 갖고 있습니다. 2015년도 TDF Stage 20에서 알프 듀에즈를 바람과 같이 올라 스테이지 우승과 종합 2위를 차지했는데, 그 때의 기록이 바로 그것.  힘의 차이가 느껴지십니까? ㄷㄷ  갈리비에 정상의 수많은 갤러리들의 열광적인 응원을 받으며 폭주하는 나이로 퀸타나. 최종적으로는 바흐데-루첸코와의 간격을 1분 45초까지 벌려내는 데 성공합니다.  퀸타나는 그대로 갈리비에 정상을 가장 먼저 넘은 다음 내리막을 향해 달립니다. 호망 바흐데가 1분 44초 차이로 퀸타나를 추격합니다만, 너무 늦었습니다. 다만 현 산악왕 저지 보유자인 팀 벨렌스가 갈리비에에서 녹았기 때문에, 산악왕 저지는 바흐데에게 넘어가긴 하겠군요.  오늘 리뷰에서 유독 GC그룹에 대한 이야기를 별로 하지 않고 있는데요, 사실 못 하는 겁니다. 갈리비에의 정상 거의 다 와서까지 GC그룹은 별로 한 게 없습니다. 여기까지 오면서 다시 20명도 안 되게 단촐해지긴 했는데, 다들 많이 지쳤는지 전혀 움직임 자체를 보여주질 못했습니다. 퀸타나가 갈리비에 정상까지 0.6km를 남겨놓은 상황에서 6분까지 벌어진 GC그룹이면 퀸타나랑 거리 차이가 대충 한 2km 조금 넘는 차이니까, 경기 시작부터 갈리비에 정상에서 약 3km 떨어진 지점까지 GC그룹은 쓸 말이 없습니다. 알랑필립은 덕택에 오늘도 마이요 존느를 방어할 수 있을 거 같은 흐름. 란다도 자기가 리더를 퀸타나에게 넘겨줘야 한다는 점만 제외하면 급할 게 없습니다.  이제서야 움직임을 보이는 GC그룹. 게런트 토마스도 업힐 내내 힘들어하는 모습을 보이자, 팀의 허가를 받았는지 이네오스의 공동 리더인 에간 베르날이 어택을 칩니다. 발베르데는 즉시 붙어보지만 곧내 떨어집니다. 여기에 아무도 반응하지 못하면서(게런트 토마스, 미켈 란다는 반응할 필요가 없죠) 베르날이 순식간에 30초를 벌어냅니다. 사견인데요, 원래는 에간 베르날의 어택이 조공이었을 겁니다. 베르날에 반응한 선수들이 힘을 쏟으면 베르날을 잡는 동시에 게런트 토마스가 카운터를 날린다는 전략이 아니었을까 싶습니다. 하지만 모든 선수들이 베르날의 어택에 한동안 반응하지 못하면서 베르날이 35초까지 시간을 벌려내니까, 팀 리더인 게런트 토마스 입장에서는 조금 이상해졌을 겁니다. 여튼 게런트 토마스가 카운터 어택을 날립니다. 웃기게도 여기에는 다들 질 수 없다는듯 전부 반응합니다.  알랑필립이 여기에는 반응하지 못하고 무너집니다. 심지어 포트에게도 추월당하는 알랑필립. 하지만 갈리비에의 정상이 얼마 남지 않았기 때문에, 최소한의 시간만 잃어내면 마이요 존느 사수에는 문제가 없을 듯합니다.  갈리비에의 정상에서 게런트 토마스는 GC그룹에 잡히고, 다같이 내리막을 달리게 됩니다. 알랑필립과의 격차도 15초 차이밖에 안됩니다. GC그룹들의 소극적인 결정 덕에 알랑필립은 오늘도 마이요 존느를 사수합니다. 오히려 알랑필립은 내리막에서 정신 나간 속도로 GC들을 따라잡아 버립니다... 베르날과 퀸타나를 빼면 아무도 알랑필립에게서 시간을 벌어낼 수 없었던 하루. 마지막 km 영상.  나이로 퀸타나에겐 과거의 영광을 되찾아온 하루가 되었습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 최종적으로 5분에 가까운 시간을 벌어내면서 12위까지 떨어졌던 순위가 7위로 껑충 뛰고, 알랑필립과의 시간차는 3분 54초까지 줄여내어 순식간에 포디엄을 사정권에 둔 형국이 되었습니다. 앞으로는 퀸타나의 어택을 아무도 내버려둘 수 없을 것입니다.  호망 바흐데는 특유의 꼬라박 내리막으로 15초를 벌어냈으나 거기까지였습니다. 스테이지 승리를 매번 눈앞에서 놓치고 있습니다. 참 풀리지 않는 투르. 그래도 산악왕 저지를 벨렌스에게서 뺏는데는 성공합니다. 벨렌스가 되찾아오긴 쉽지 않아 보이네요.  에간 베르날은 최종적으로 GC그룹보다 32초 먼저 들어옵니다. 컨디션이 꽤 괜찮아 보였는데 조금 더 일찍 어택했으면 어땠을까 하는 아쉬움.  뒤이어 메인 그룹이 피니시합니다. 소문난 잔치치고는 별로 볼 게 없었던 GC그룹간의 싸움.  새로운 순위. 베르날이 2위로 뛰어올랐습니다. 팀 이네오스의 진짜 리더는 누구일까요? 모비스타는 며칠 사이에 리더가 2번 바뀐 형국입니다. 첨부터 제대로 합을 맞췄으면 어땠을까 싶을 정도로 콩가루 같은 모비스타인데 이 팀은 웃기게도 이게 요즘 팀 컬러같 -_-;;; 해외에서도 조롱을 많이 듣는 팀입니다. 돈도 많이 쓰는 편이고 선수들도 참 좋은데..
