 Stage 8은 코스로 보나 구성으로 보나 BA에게 유리한 코스라 여겨졌습니다. 주요 GC라이더들 간에 시간차가 많이 나지 않고, 현재 옐로우를 입고 있는 선수가 GC컨텐더가 아닌 데다가 전날 옐로우를 빼앗긴 알랑필립이 다시 옐로우를 되찾아 오길 원했기 때문에 이날 알랑필립의 후반부 어택이 예상되었고, 그와 별개로 종합우승을 노리는 팀들보다는 스테이지 승리를 노리는 팀들의 전략이 궁금해지는 하루였습니다.  마콩을 지나 생테티엔으로 향하는, 프랑스 동부의 구불구불한 낙타등을 지나는 코스입니다. 중산악 코스로 분류되고, BA를 형성시키면 GC들은 좀 쉬고 스테이지 우승을 노리는 팀들의 대결이 예상되었는데, 보기좋게 예상이 빗나갑니다. 경기가 벌어졌던 7월 13일 토요일은 프랑스의 주요 국경일인 혁명기념일 전날이었습니다. 그래서 그런지 이날과 다음 날은 이런 행사를 벌이더군요. 프랑스 공군이 삼색기 연기를 내뿜으며 선수들을 맞이합니다.  경기 시작 직후 수 km는 중립 구간을 지정합니다. 보통 갤러리들이 선수들을 많이 보게 하기 위해, 첫 스타트는 해당 도시의 중심 광장에서 출발하여 시가지를 쭉 지나 나가는 경우가 많습니다. 이런 경우 속도가 너무 빠르면 도로가 좁아 사고위험도 높고 선수들 모습보기가 쉽지 않기 때문에, 중립 구간에서는 느린 속도로 선두 차가 지나가고 선수들이 그 뒤를 따르게 됩니다. 선수들도 몸도 좀 풀고 하구요. 경기가 시작되자마자 재빠르게 3명의 선수가 BA를 시도합니다. 자막으로는 EF Education First 팀의 주요 도메스티크인 티제이 반가르덴이 투르를 떠났다는 소식이 나갑니다. 전날 크게 다쳤는데 회복이 안 된 모양입니다. TDF는 완주도 쉽지 않습니다...  CCC의 알렉산드로 데마르키 선수가 뒤늦게 BA를 시도하여 앞선 3명을 추격합니다.  영상 캡처를 다 해두었는데 초반 몇 장면이 날아갔네요. 시간이 오래 걸리는 작업이라 다시 하기는 좀 그렇고 해서 초반부는 최대한 사진자료로 설명을 대체합니다. 이렇게 해서 4명의 BA가 형성이 됩니다. 사진 왼쪽부터 순서대로 디멘션 데이터의 벤자민 킹, CCC의 알렉산드로 데마르키, 수달-로토의 토마스 데 헨트, 마지막으로 토탈-디렉트 에너지의 니키 테릅스트라 이렇게 4명. 문제는 이 4명이 보통 선수들이 아니라는 거죠. 펠로톤은 바짝 긴장합니다. 네명 다 독주에 일가견이 있고, BA로 유능한 선수들입니다. 특히나 문제는 토마스 데 헨트와 알렉산드로 데마르키. 이 2명은 유명한 BA장인입니다. 그중에서도 토마스 데 헨트는 BA Specialist로 아주 명성이 높은 선수죠. 그전부터 BA장인으로 명성이 높았으며, 2017년도에는 TDF와 부엘타에 연속으로 나가 4000km가 넘는 거리를 BA로 달린 괴인입니다. 이게 어느 정도냐면 올해 TDF가 3500km 좀 못 넘습니다 -_-;;; 거의 투어의 2/3을 BA로 나간 선수에요. 화면에 잡힌 시간으로만 따지면 옐로우 저지보다 오래 TV에서 볼 수 있었던 선수라는 거죠. 거의 BA중독... 그렇다고 마냥 BA로 나가기만 하는 건 아닙니다. 방심하다간 그대로 BA 스테이지 우승으로 끝내버릴 수 있는 선수입니다. 실제로 지로, 부엘타, 투르 모두에서 스테이지 우승 경력이 있으며, 각종 1주일짜리 투어 경기에서도 BA로 나가 스테이지를 차지한 경력이 있습니다. BA에 있어서는 그야말로 만렙에 도달한 장인이죠. 사실 저기에서 데 헨트 빠지고 데마르키와 테릅스트라 킹만 해도 상당히 강한 BA인데, 데 헨트까지 더해져 BA 내에서 상당히 우승가능성이 높은 조합이 나왔습니다. 시작하자마자 최대 5분까지 간격이 벌어진 펠로톤은 이에 맞서 스피드를 올리게 되고, 중산악 구간에서 페이스가 초반부터 빠르게 올라가기 시작하니 선수들이 고통받기 시작합니다. 특히 이런 날 스프린터들은 지옥을 보게 됩니다. 이런 페이스의 경기는 마치 100m 달리기 선수가 10000m 장거리 달리기를 하는 격인 거죠. 사진에서 알렉산더 크리스토프와 딜런 흐로네베겐이라는 두 스프린터가 경기 초반부터 고통받으며 펠로톤 뒤에서 죽어라 달리는 모습입니다. 수달-로토의 165cm 최단신 스프린터인 캐일럽 이완도 지옥을 보고 있습니다. 이 선수는 키가 작지만 근육 자체는 스프린터의 체질이기 때문에 키가 작은게 아무 이점이 없습니다. 이완 역시 경기 내내 고생하게 됩니다. 아케아-삼식의 '고릴라' 안드레 그라이펠도 뒤쳐집니다. 스프린터 중 최고 거구이면서 83년생인 이 노장도 엄청나게 힘들어합니다. 사실 그라이펠은 10년 넘게 3대 그랜드 투어에서 이 고생을 해가면서 30번이 넘는 스프린트 우승을 차지한 선수입니다... 비록 이제 나이가 들어 작년부터는 별다른 활약이 없어 프로 콘티넨탈 팀으로 이적했지만 여전히 팀 프렌들리한 백전노장으로 많은 사랑을 받는 선수죠.  중간 스프린트의 1~4위 점수는 BA 4명이 나눠 가집니다. 포인트 저지에는 관심이 없는 넷이다 보니 그냥 휙 지나갑니다. 펠로톤에서는 스프린터들이 뛰쳐나와 나머지 포인트를 가져갑니다. 비비아니, 사간, 매튜스, 콜브레이 순.  경기 중후반부까지 BA의 추격은 스테이지 승리+높은 포인트로 포인트 저지를 노리는 마이클 매튜스가 소속한 팀 선웹, 마찬가지로 후반 스프린터로 끌고가기를 원하는 보라 한스그로헤+옐로우를 치코네에게서 뺏어오길 원하는 데커닝크-퀵스텝, 현 옐로우 저지가 있는 트렉-세가프레도 등이 담당합니다. ...문제는 이 BA가 130km를 달리고도 시간 차이가 3분 30초를 계속 유지한 채로 달리고 있다는 것이었죠. 보통 펠로톤은 BA와의 시간을 컨트롤할 수 있을 정도로 강력합니다. 문제는 이런 날이 가끔 있습니다. BA의 페이스가 미쳐서 그냥 보통 전략으로는 펠로톤이 잡아내기가 힘들다는 거죠. 게다가 후술하겠지만 오늘은 굉장한 하이-페이스 경기였습니다. 이런 페이스에도 BA가 별로 지치지 않고 달렸다는 겁니다. 133km를 달렸을 때쯤 BA에서 변화가 일어납니다. 계속되는 하이페이스에 천하의 니키 테릅스트라도 버티지 못하고 녹아내리기 시작. 테릅스트라는 클래식에서는 최강의 선수 중 한 명으로 뽑힐 정도로 강력한 독주가 특기인데, 그런 노장도 이 날 강한 페이스는 버거웠나 봅니다. 디멘션 데이타의 벤자민 킹도 느려지기 시작. 그러거나 말거나 BA장인 2명은 페이스를 유지하면서 계속 달립니다. 이날 토마스 데 헨트는 산악 포인트 1위를 모조리 독식하여 팀 동료 벨렌스의 산악포인트 방어를 돕습니다. 여차하면 자기가 산악왕 저지를 노릴 수 있을 정도 선까지 먹었죠. 동료들의 도움을 받으며 간신히 펠로톤 뒤에 붙어가는 이완. 짠합니다... 이날 경기 페이스. 이런 중산악 낙타등 코스에서 시속 40km/h를 넘게 유지하며 달립니다. 정말 엄청난 페이스... 고통받는 흐로네베겐. 내리막을 타는 도중 데마르키가 길을 잘못 읽어 펜스에 부딪히고 맙니다. 다행히 무리 없이 데 헨트에게 붙는데 성공한 데마르키. 세계 최고의 올라운더인 피터 사간이라고 이런 페이스에서는 별 방법이 없습니다. 올라운더라 해도 기본적으로는 스프린터인데다가 체구가 크고 파워 때문에 무게가 꽤 나가는 선수라 이런 코스에서는 방법이 없죠. 사간 역시 이날 내내 고생하게 됩니다. 벤 킹을 잡아내는 펠로톤. 테릅스트라는 여기에는 나오지 않았는데, 이미 BA에게 잡힌 상태고 나중에는 완전히 엥꼬가 나서 펠로톤에도 따라붙지 못하고 완전히 쳐지게 됩니다. 정말 가혹한 경기. 업힐 정상에서 녹아내리기 직전의 사간. 다행히 일단 한 고개 넘었기 때문에 당분간은 내리막이고, 펠로톤 뒤에 붙어갈 수는 있습니다. 아직도 펠로톤과 BA간의 격차는 3분 30초. 펠로톤 입장에서는 상당히 위험한 시간차입니다. 아직도 좁혀지질 않습니다. 저는 올해 들어서 유로스포츠에 왕년의 대스타였던 브래들리 위긴스와 알베르토 콘타도르가 리포터로 합류하면서, 기존에 다방면에서 활약하던 이 아저씨가 안 보이길래 실직한 줄 알았습니다. 그런데 모습을 보이네요. 후안 안토니오 플레챠라는 분인데, 언젠가 한번 다룰 일이 있을 분입니다. Flecha's Recon이라고 해서 그날 스테이지의 중요한 부분을 직접 달리면서 설명해주는 막간 프로를 담당하고, 평소에는 리포터로 선수들을 만나보는 전직 선수인데, 장기는 사실 다른 곳에 있습니다... 펠로톤은 사력을 다해서 추격하기 시작합니다. 기존 스테이지 우승을 노리는 팀들로는 추격이 안 되니까 아예 GC 컨텐더 팀들이 추격에 나섭니다. EF 에듀케이션, 아스타나, 이네오스 같은 팀들은 오늘 스테이지 우승에 관심이 없고 평소 경기라면 1주차에 힘을 아껴야 할 팀들인데, 이들이 나서서 적극적으로 추격을 한다는 것 자체가 그만큼 BA가 엄청나게 해내고 있다는 거죠. 그래도 이 시점에서 격차는 꾸준히 줄기 시작합니다. 사이먼 예이츠는 같은 팀 소속 아담 예이츠의 쌍둥이 형제입니다. 지로를 뛰고왔기 때문에 체력부담이 커서 투르에 출전하지 않을 거 같았는데, 형제를 도와준다는 뜻에서 참가한 모양입니다. 문제는 Stage 2부터 계속 처지기만 한다는 것... 이러면 팀에 짐덩어리만 되지 아무 도움이 되지 않는데 현재로서는 완전히 실패한 모습입니다. 그만큼 그랜드 투어를 2개 연속뛰는 게 쉬운 게 아닙니다. 이날 옐로우를 입고 있던 치코네도 지로 디탈리아 산악왕 따고 투르에 참가한 선수인데 정말 대단한 거에요. 와웃 반 아트도 이런 코스에서는 답이 없습니다. 아예 펠로톤에서 뒤처져서 혼자 달리면서 여유(...)를 부리는 중.  전통적인 시간 차이 안내법. 파워미터와 무전기가 난무하는 시대인데 아직 이런 아날로그적 낭만도 남아있는 사이클 판입니다. View post on imgur.comFDJ의 물땅을 담당하는 선수. 이런 날 페이스 늦춰서 팀카까지 가서 물병 받아온 다음에 저만치 앞에 가 있는, 그것도 점점 페이스가 높아지는 펠로톤에 죽을 힘을 다해 따라가야 하는 물땅은 정말 고달픕니다... 규정상으로 피니시까지 20km 미만 지점에서는 보급을 받을 수 없기 때문에, 여기가 마지막 보급점인 겁니다.  피터 사간의 포인트 저지 자리를 언제나 노리고 있는, 가장 올라운드하다는 평을 받는 선수 중 한명인 마이클 매튜스도 이런 하이페이스 경기에는 장사가 없어 펠로톤 뒤로 밀리기 시작합니다. View post on imgur.com마지막 평지 구간에서 다리를 좀 회복한 스프린터들 중에 그나마 힘이 남아있는 선수들이 우르르 앞으로 나와 나머지 점수라도 먹어보자고 대결을 펼칩니다. 매튜스 4위, 사간 5위. 이날 포인트 2위였던 비비아니는 이 경쟁에 참가도 못했기 때문에 현재 그린 저지를 입고 있는 사간과 2위와의 격차는 더 벌어지게 되었습니다. 보통 1주차는 GC경쟁이 벌어지기 좀 전이기 때문에, 이런 스테이지에서는 전략적으로 BA를 놔주고 펠로톤은 따라가면서 대응하는 양상을 예상하게 됩니다. 하지만 엄청나게 강력한 BA가 판을 완전히 휘저어 버리면서 모든 팀들의 스텝이 꼬이고, 결국 이를 잡아가는 과정에서 굉장히 격렬한 페이스가 되면서 대단한 경기가 나왔습니다. 경기가 벌어진 지 3일 뒤에나 사정상 글을 완성하게 되면서 그때의 기억이 좀 휘발된 점도 있고 해서 경기흐름이 제가 생각한 만큼 독자들에게 잘 전달되었는지는 모르겠는데, 여튼 이런 경기가 바로 사이클을 보게 되는 이유일까 싶을 정도로 멋진 경기였습니다. 가능하면 1주차 총 리뷰도 늦었지만 간단하게 좀 쓸까 생각중입니다. 어제까지는 쓸 생각이 없었는데, 어제 경기결과로 GC순위에서 예상외의 변동이 생겼기 때문입니다.
