내 짐작으로는 기억은 무엇이 되었든 그 기억을 갖고 사는 사람이 계속 살아가도록 돕는 데 가장 유용한 것을 우선시하는 듯하다. 따라서 행복한 축에 속하는 기억이 표면에 떠오르게 하는. 예를 들어 어느 날 침대에 누워 있다가 흔히 일어나는 발기 때문에 잠을 이루지 못하던 일이 기억난다. 그런데 그때의 발기는 어떤 사람이나 공상과 연결되지 않은 발기였다. 그냥 기쁘도록 젊었기 때문에 일어난 일이었다. 뇌, 심장, 영혼, 그리고 '그것'이 다 젊었기 때문에 - 하지만 나는 젊은 사람을 부러워하지 않는다. 사춘기 때 나는 자문하곤 했다. 젊은 사람들을 부러워하지 않는다면 늙은 사람들이 무슨 소용이란 말인가?
