-- 이 글은 제 주관이 아주아주 많이 들어가있습니다. -- 이 글은 반말체입니다. 양해바랍니다. <더 지니어스 시리즈> <소사이어티 게임>을 통해 수많은 마니아층을 만들어낸 정종연PD의 오랜 염원은 아이러니 하게도 '대중성'이었다. 정종연PD는 대탈출을 만들기 전, 한 매체와의 인터뷰에서 '점점 매니아틱한 방송'이 되어가는 것에 회의감을 느꼈다고 말했다. 이는 대탈출을 가벼운 예능, 대중적인 예능으로 만들겠다는 각오가 아니었을까? 결론부터 말하자면 정종연은 대중성 확보에 실패했다. 당신은 역시 마니아 피디야. 먼저 성적부터 살펴보자. 대탈출 시즌 1(2018.7.1~2018.9.23 / 13부작)의 최고시청률은 2.2%. 그리고 야심차게 준비한 대탈출 시즌2의 최고 시청률은 1회였던 2.5%(현재는 1.7%). 과연 그는 대중성을 잡았다고 할 수 있는가? '마니아'프로그램이라고 자평했던 <더 지니어스 그랜드 파이널>의 최고 시청률은 3.2%였다. <대탈출>은 대중성을 잡아내지 못했다.  (참고: 대탈출의 화제성은 시즌2 내내 10위권에 들지 못하다 최근 7화에서 4위에 처음 랭크됨. 그러나 순위에 비해 점유율은 '2.49%'로 1위인 프로듀서 X(35%)에 비하면 거의 없는 수준. 참고로 10위인 라디오스타가 1.55%다.) ■ 대탈출은 무슨 프로그램인가? 프로그램에 대해 말하기 전에 정종연PD에 대해 생각해보자. 내가 생각하는 정종연 PD의 프로그램이 갖고 있는, 예능의 아이덴티티는 다음과 같다. 하나, 관찰을 통해 다양한 인간군상을 보여준다. 둘, 추리와 예능의 결합. 지금까지 그가 만들었던 프로그램에는 이 두 가지가 녹아 있었다. <지니어스>는 추리가, <소사이어티>는 인간군상에 좀 더 방점이 찍혀 있었다는 차이가 있을 뿐이다. 그러면 <대탈출>은 어떨까? 정종연PD는 대중성을 이야기하며 대탈출의 멤버를 '멍청한' 6인조로 구성했다. (여기서 멍청하다는 말은 예능적 캐릭터를 의미한다) 강호동, 피오, 김종민... 여기까지만 들어도 벌써 이들이 어떻게 '탈출'할지 그려지지 않는다. 그러니 필연적으로 문제의 난이도를 낮추도록 조절해야 했다. (안그러면 이들이 탈출을 못할 테니까) 그래서 발생하는 첫번째 문제점. 탈출 난이도 하락으로 인한 '추리'의 맛 삭제. 사실 대탈출에서 <지니어스>나 <크라임씬>에서 느낀 '짜릿함'은 거의 느끼기 힘들다. 사실, 짜릿함은 시청자보다 출연자들이 훨씬 더 잘 느끼는 것으로 보인다. 다이어리에 적힌 생일로 사물함의 비밀번호를 풀어내서 기뻐하는 강호동을 보면서 시청자는 어떤 쾌감을 느끼기 어렵다.(그러나 본인은 그 행위가 뿌듯한지 몇 번이고 반복한다) 즉, 대탈출은 애초부터 이런 쾌감을 주려는 목적의 프로그램이 아니다. . . . 다시 출연진을 불러보자. 강호동, 피오, 김종민, 유병재, 신동, 김동현... 혹시 이들 중에 신선한 멤버가 있는가? 다들 한 번씩 예능에서 소모 되었던, 들으면 딱 캐릭터가 떠오르는 사람들 아닌가? 여기서 두번째 문제점, 뻔한 캐스팅과 뻔한 활용. 단순히 캐스팅을 저렇게 했다는 것만으로 프로그램 내용이 식상해 진다는 건 비약이다. 당장 지니어스만 해도 그 전까지 예능에서 엄청나게 소비되던 '장동민'이라는 캐릭터가 '갓'이 되지 않았던가. 오히려 이런 단점은 캐릭터를 연기한 멤버들의 문제가 아니라 이들을 1차원적으로 활용한 연출의 문제가 크다. 정리하면, 정종연 PD는 대탈출의 '대중성'을 위해 자신의 장기인 '추리'와 '인간군상 관찰' 두 가지를 거세해버렸다. 는 게 내 생각이다. 아마, 이 시도들은 '대중성'을 위한 희생이었을 것이다. 그렇다면 이 두 가지를 희생하고 <대탈출>이 얻은 건 무엇인가? 정종연 PD는 '버라이어티 쇼'를 만들고 싶었던 것 같다. ■ 대탈출을 재밌게 볼 수 있는 사람은 누구일까? 1. 대탈출은 추리 예능이라기보다는 '리얼 버라이어티 쇼'에 가깝다. 출연자들의 케미와 예능적 재미가 훨씬 돋보이며, 이런 것들을 좋아하는 시청자들은 대탈출이 '인생예능'이 될 가능성이 높다. 그리고 나는 이런 사람들을 존중한다. 2. 누가 봐도 돈을 들인 세트장을 비롯, 프로그램의 퀄리티가 절대적으로 높다. 기존의 관찰예능과는 독보적으로 다른 질감 & 퀄리티의 예능이다. 세트의 디테일도 좋지만 탈출 장소의 설정에도 상당히 공을 들였다. 편집도 당연하게도, 퀄리티 있다. 지니어스 짬이 어디 가지 않는다. 하지만 정작 방탈출을 즐겨하는 마니아 입장에서는 대탈출에서 원하는 재미를 기대하기 어렵다. 그들의 입장에서 대탈출을 보면 두 가지 반응이다. 너무 못해서 답답하고, 너무 쉽다는 것. 그럼 대중들은 이 프로그램을 쉽게 접근할 수 있는가? 그건 맞다. 이 지점에서 한가지를 지적하고 싶어진다. 대탈출은 분명 시청자들의 진입장벽을 낮췄다. (PD의 의도대로 먹힌 부분이다.) 정종연 PD의 구상은 이렇다. 멤버들을 친숙하게(예능적 재미도 뽑을 수 있게), 그리고 적당히 멍청하게 만듦으로서 '누구나' 즐길 수 있게 접근성을 높인다. 화려한 세트장과 설정으로 '탈출 장소'자체의 콘텐츠의 질도 높다. 이로서 마니아층도 만족할 것이다. 라고. 그러나 결과는 이렇다. '진입장벽은 낮아졌지만, 정작 그렇게 끌어들인 시청자를 붙잡아둘 요소는 너무나 적었다.' ■ 대탈출이 대중성이 없는 이유 본격적으로 이야기 하기 앞서 이 사람 이야기를 하고 싶다. 대탈출의 마니아 층(대중성을 노려도 정작 마니아 프로그램이 되어버리는 안타까운 종연씨)이 가장 많이 지적하는 멤버는 누굴까? 다름아닌 김종민이다. 이유는 이렇다. '아 김종민 몰입 너무 안해준다.'라고. (가장 최근화까지 이 이야기를 들었다.) 정말 김종민 때문일까? 나는 되레 김종민을 통해 대탈출을 '안'보는 일반 시청자들의 심리를 읽을 수 있다고 생각한다.  * 하나, 예능의 불쾌한 골짜기 효과 대탈출은 분명 '리얼 버라이어티'를 표방했다고 분석했다. 그런데도 대탈출은 꽁트적 요소가 강하다. 강해도 너무 강하다. 특정 에피소드는 대놓고 꽁트의 비중이 높다. 이는 출연자 뿐 아니라 시청자의 몰입도 방해한다. 여기서 나는 <예능의 불쾌한 골짜기 효과>를 주장해 볼 생각이다.  <불쾌한 골짜기> 간단히 말해 불쾌한 골짜기란, 로봇이 인간을 닮을 수록 점점 친근해 지다가, 어느 순간(이 지점이 불쾌한 골짜기다)을 넘어가면 갑자기 너무 닮아서 징그럽다...는 그런 생각에 역으로 호감도가 떨어진다. 뭐 그런 말이다. 예능에서 '꽁트'와 '리얼리티'의 구분이 불명확 할 때, 나는 시청자가 불쾌함을 느낀다고 생각한다. 대표적인 예시는 <두니아>. 여기서는 멤버들이 자기 캐릭터와 연기하는 캐릭터를 왔다갔다 했다. 재밌는 시도였지만, 결과(시청률)는 참패였다. 또 하나의 예시는 <크라임씬>. '어? 크라임씬? 그거 엄청 성공해서 시즌3까지 나온거 아니냐?' 라고 묻겠지만, 크라임씬 3의 최고 시청률은 1.9%다. 이 역시 대중성 확보에는 실패했다. <크라임씬>에서는 출연자들이 추리도 하면서, 한 캐릭터를 연기하기도 한다. 이 부분이 크라임씬의 취약지점이자 장점이다. 나는 몰입이 안되는 시청자 중 한 명이었고, 크라임씬을 '안 본' 시청자들은 대부분 이 부분이 '불쾌'했을거다. 결론은 꽁트를 하려면 꽁트를 하고, 리얼을 하라면 리얼을 하라는 것이다. 이도저도 아닌 프로그램은 '대중성'을 획득 할 수 없다. 중요한 것은, 그렇다고 이렇게 하는게 나쁘다거나 무조건적으로 재미가 없다것이 아니다. 다만 '대중성'과는 거리가 멀어지는 방법이라는 점이다. (쉽게 말해 시청률이 안나온다) <대탈출>의 특정 에피소드 (교도소, 정신병원)은 대놓고 NPC(배우들)과의 꽁트, 상황설정으로 굴러간다. 여기서 출연자들은 소위 '트롤'을 절대 행하지 않는다. 이런 것이 거세된 순간, 나 같은 '리얼리티 추구형 시청자'의 몰입은 끝이다. 만약 간호사를 무력으로 제압하고 탈출 하려고 한다면? 그땐 어떻게 되는 걸까? 김동현이 간호사 말 한마디에 얌전히 기다리는 모습은, 리얼리티를 표방한다면 납득하기 힘든 장면이 아닐까? 몰입하지 않으니, 무대가 '상황극'처럼 보인다. 이 상황극은, 마치 장난 같다. 김종민이 몰입을 안하는게 아니라 못할 만한 지점이 분명히 있다는 이야기다. 이 지점에서 나는 김종민이 몰입을 못한다는 걸 '이해'해버렸다. * 둘, 클리셰 대탈출에 나오는 각종 설정들은 어디서 많이 들어본 설정들이다. 왜 일까? 예능의 전설 <무한도전>에서 최대 제작비를 들이고 가장 시원하게 망한 '좀비 특집'을 기억하는가? 당시 제작진이 의도한대로 멤버들은 움직여 주지 않았고, 박명수가 사다리를 치우고 유재석이 백신을 깨트리며 특집은 허무하게 끝났다. 무한도전 제작진은 이 실패를 딛고 '여드름 브레이크 특집'을 성공시키는데, 여기서는 '길성준'이라는 NPC를 투입시켜 출연진들을 보조했다. 이것은, 말하자면 제작진의 직접적인 개입을 의미했다. 이 이야기를 왜 하는가? 대탈출이 바로 이런 공식에 의해 움직이고 있기 때문이다. 대탈출에는 수많은 '연기자'(NPC)들이 등장한다. 이들은 출연자들에게 힌트를 주거나, 중요한 힌트가 되기도 한다. 제작진의 의도로 '딴짓 하지말고 이렇게 하세요~'로 쓰이는 도구다. 그러다보니 이들은 예측 가능해야 한다. 가령, 정신병원편에서 장기두와 장기판의 상황을 생각해보자. NPC는 '장기두'. 그는 장기말(왕)이 없어 큰일이라고 하고 있다. 여기서 유병재는 '왕'을 가지고 있었는데, 그에게는 선택지가 없다. 1. 왕을 줄테니 뭘 해주실래요? -> 반응 없음. 2. 왕을 줘야되는구나. 일단 줘(신동) -> 퍼즐을 풀어야 된다고 말함. '의외성'이 증발한다. '리얼'이 없다는 이야기다. 우습지 않은가? 리얼 버라이어티를 표방하면서, 정작 '리얼'은 좀비떼를 보면서 놀라는 그 순간 뿐이다. 사람들이 가장 많이 웃는 지점도 이 부분이니. 명확하지 않은가? 리얼 버라이어티는 '의외성'에서 재미가 나온다. 이들이 정교하게 설치한 NPC들에게서는 의외성을 전혀 느낄 수 없다. 한마디로 재미가 없다. 클리셰 덩어리인 NPC들이 주는 장점은 하나다. 출연자들이 행동할 수 있는 범위를 좁혀준다. '척하면 척'이라는 말이다. 좀비편에서, 희망이를 데리고 탈출해야 되는구나. 하고 직관적으로 이해할 수 있게 된다. 하지만 이 설정자체가 너무 클리셰다. 설정이 뻔하다보니, 이야기가 재미가 없어진다. 즉, 연기자들을 이끌기 위한 뻔한 설정인 '클리셰'가 되레 시청자들을 이끄는데는 발목을 잡는 것이다. 너무 뻔하니까. 어디서 많이 본 것 같으니까.. ■ 대탈출의 가능성 그럼에도 불구하고. 나는 <대탈출>이 좋은 예능이라고 생각한다. 쿡방, 여행, 관찰...의 홍수속에 이런 프로그램은 시도만으로 칭찬받아 마땅하다. 결론이다. <대탈출>은 분명 수작이다. 결코 '실패작'이라 말 할 수 없는, 좋은 퀄리티의 프로그램이다. 이건 확실하다. 다만, '대중성'과는 거리가 멀어졌다. 그런데, 기존의 정종연에게 열광했던 마니아들의 픽도 받지 못했다. 아쉽다. 그렇다면 대중성 확보에 실패하면 실패한 프로그램일까? 그건 물론 아니다. 화제성도 있고, 좋아해주는 시청층도 있으니까. 그런데 이 프로그램 단가가 높다.(tvn피셜 회당 제작비가 가장 높다) 즉, '가성비가 안나온다.' 대탈출은 처음부터 마니아 프로그램이 되어야 했다. 그것도 철저하게. 애초에 '방탈출' 자체가 대중적 장르가 아니다. 어차피 5060은 보기 어렵다. 아무리 쉽게 만들어도, 송가인이 나와도, 우리 엄마는 볼 수 없는 장르다. 그렇다면 처음부터 이런 장르로 '대중성'을 잡겠다는 것은 모순이 아니었나? 세트 비용을 줄이더라도, 퍼즐과 기믹을 더 철저하게 만들어 냈다면 좋았을 것이다. 눈요기로 쓰이는 세트들이 때로는 주인을 잘못 만나서 아깝게 느껴지기도 한다. 대탈출 시즌1 <1화>에서 강호동이 정종연PD이야기를 하며 첫 만남에서 한 말은 이랬다.
