 "미드타운에 있는 아주 잘 꾸며 놓은 엘리트 게이 커플네 집에서 가구 하나 업어오다가 마약 소지자가 운전하는 트럭타고 윌리엄즈버그 브릿지 역주행해서 소방관에게 구출 당하는 그 순간" 이야기를 짧게 마무리하고 일하러 가겠읍니다. https://new.redtea.kr/?b=3&n=8228 과연 이걸 어떻게 써야 현장감이 전달될 지 모르겠어요. 커다란 원목 식탁이나 작업대를 좋아합니다. 그동안은 쭉 이케아 제품을 썼지만 어느새 합판소재에는 만족하지 못하는 몸이 되어버려서 널찍한 테이블을 찾고 있던 와중에 크래이그즈리스트 (온라인 벼룩시장? 중고나라? 느낌) 에서 마음에 드는 매물을 마침내 발견, 들뜬 마음으로 전화 예약을 마친 후, 이삿짐 센터에 문의했지만 당일건을 받아주는 곳이 없었어요. 별 수 없이 개인 트럭기사 연락처를 찾아 간신히 고용했읍니다. 의뢰건은 미드타운 판매자의 집에서 식탁을 받아 우리집으로 배달. 간단하죠? 뭐 걱정 1도 안하고 저는 제 할 일을 하고 있었읍니다. 테이블 맞이를 위한 가구 대이동을 하면서요. '드디어 나도 합판말고 진짜 나무. 것도 속이 꽉찬 호두나무. 호두 엄청 좋아하는데. 호두 마이쪙. 흐헝헝, 감사합니다. 이제 전 이 나무 식탁과 함께 곱게 늙어갈게요. 착하게 살 것입니다. 이 테이블에서 많은 책을 읽고, 많은 생각을 하고, 밤에는 좋은 글을 썼다고 착각했다가 아침에 좌절하고 고치고 또 고치고 하다가, 나중에는 내가 할 수 있는 최고의 맛이가 있는 요리를 풍성하게 차려서 내가 아끼고 좋아하는 사람들 옹기종기 불러 모아 지금까지 받은 것 베풀며 그렇게 하하호호 신나는 먹잔치하면서 살아야지.' 전 꿈에 부풀었어요. 특히 먹잔치 부분에서 입꼬리가 아니 올라갈 수 없었읍니다. 근데 판매자와 합의한 오후 1시가 되어도 트럭기사가 나타나지 않는 것이었읍니다. 판매자는 이미 이사 나간 후였고, 시간 맞춰서 나온 건데 15분이 경과하자 1분 1초가 너무 미안한 나머지 전화기를 들고 고개를 연거푸 숙이며 사과하고 있는 제 자신을 발견했어요. 1시 50분경 겨우 가구 수거했다고 지금 출발한다는 연락을 받았어요. 그와 동시에 판매자로부터 문자도 받았읍니다. "구매자님, 근데 트럭 기사가 좀 이상합니다...." "네? 기사가 이상하다뇨?" 하지만 판매자는 말을 아꼈읍니다. 이 때 알아챘다면 좋았을까요. 그 때는 미처 몰랐읍니다, 그 날 제가 밤 10시까지 집에 돌아오지 못할 줄은, 아니 무사히 돌아왔음에 감사할 줄은 말이죠. 미드타운에서 윌리엄스버그의 우리집까지는 차로 빠르면 30분 막혀도 50분이 걸리는 거리입니다. 그런데 한 시간이 지나도 기사에게 연락이 없어서 전화를 했지요. 길이 많이 막히는지, 어디쯤 오는지 물었읍니다. 이스트빌리지라고 했읍니다. 근데 지금 차가 자꾸 서서 기름만 넣으면 금방 다시 갈 수 있다며 걱정하덜덜덜 말라고 했어요. 그냥 걱정하지 말라고 했으면 모르겠는데, 막 하덜덜덜 말라고 오바하니까 불현듯 걱정이 되기 시작하였읍니다. 그래서 예민해진 저는 물어봤어요. 혹시 문제가 있으면 괜찮으니 솔직히 말해달라. 그랬더니 기다렸다는 듯 실은 기름값이 없어서 그런데 현금을 가지고 차가 정지되어 있는 이스트빌리지로 와 줄 수 있느냐고 그럼 같이 기름을 채우고 트럭으로 집까지 데려다 주겠다고 말하였어요. '하아.....' 뭐 가야죠. 이미 트럭 안에 제 꿈이 있는데. 지하철 타고 급히 나가서 대로변에 정차해 놓은 트럭(x) 밴(o)을 발견하였읍니다. 가서 문을 두드렸지만 기사는 없고 문은 닫혀 있었어요. 전화를 걸어봤더니 지금 기름을 사서 가는 중이니 차에서 기다리라는 겁니다. "아, 네 알겠읍니다. 천천히 오세요." .........????? 잠시만요. 기름을 사온다고요? 차 여기 있는데.......? 순간 머리를 맞은 듯 띵하였고, 그 때부터 전 판매자에게 이 상황을 사진과 함께 문자로 생중계하기 시작했어요. 누가 되던지 지금 이 상황을 이해하고 같이 판단해 줄 사람이 필요했거든요. 아아, 들립니까. 문제의 밴 발견, 이 밴이 그 밴입니까? 기사는 사라지고 없읍니다. 정확한 상황 판단을 위해 협조 부탁드립니다. 오바. (밴 사진) -----전송------ 그 밴이 맞읍니다. 구매자님, 조심하십시오. 이제와 말씀드리지만 기사가 트럭에 사는 사람 같았읍니다. ----읽음------- 그 때 나타났어요. 마리화나 내음 짙게 풍기며 그가 한 손에 무엇을 들고 다가왔어요. 자세히 보니 2리터 들이 물통이었읍니다. 거기에 기름을 채워 왔어요. 제게 반갑게 인사하더니, 다행히 방금 열심히 구걸해서 5딸라 생겨서 5딸라 어치 기름 사왔다고 했어요. 이거면 우린 할 수 있다고 했어요. Aㅏ................... 그리고서 기름을 채우고 너무 자연스럽게 옆자리를 탁탁 치며 이제 노 프라블럼이라면서 어서 출발하자고 하였어요. 그래요, 출발해야죠. 근데 왜 이렇게 이 차 타기가 싫을까요. 단순히 그 사람에게서 악취가 나고 차가 더럽기 때문이라면 조금만 참자는 생각으로 올라 탄 후 차 시동을 부릉부릉...부르르릉. 쉬위위윙. 뚝. 부...부릉! 차가 움직이기 시작했고 저는 황급히 안전벨트를 맸어요. 다행히도 순조롭게 로워이스트, 차이나타운을 거쳐, 윌리엄스버그 브릿지에 진입을 하였어요. 이제 다리만 건너면 우리집이에요. 이렇게 우리집에 빨리 가고 싶었던 적을 손에 꼽을 정도로 애타게 집이 그리웠어요. 으앙, 집아 보고 싶어. 너는 이런 내 마음 아는지. 가끔 내 생각이나 하는지......... (정신 차림) 그래 이제 곧이야. 우린 할 수 있다. 이 식탁 옮길 수 있다. 하지만 다리에 진입한 후부터 차가 부르릥 쉬익쉬익 자꾸 헛기침 하듯 차체를 몇 번 떨더니 이내 멈추었어요. 뒤에서는 끼익! 뛰뛰빵빵! 얼른 다시 시동을 걸어 몇 미터 가다가 또 헛기침하면서 뚝. 끼이이익! 뛰뛰빵빵! 욕욕! 기사도 당황한 듯 보였읍니다. 그렇게 3-4번은 멈춘 후, 다시 시동이 걸리자 저는 선언했어요. 119를 부르겠다. 그냥 차를 최대한 가에 일단 정차시켜라. 그러자 갑자기 악취의 남자가, 운전대를 잡더니 엑셀레이트를 연거푸 밟으며 후진하기 시작했어요. 으ㅇ으으으아ㅇㅏㅏㅏㅏ. 사람 살려어어어어어엉엉ㅠㅠ. 아무 생각도 안 들고 그냥 손잡이 꽉 움켜잡고 대롱대롱 매달려 있었읍니다. 주위에서는 갑자기 차가 뒤로 오니까 아주 난리가 났읍니다. 흐으으으으으으윽. 지금 내 몸을 꿰뚫고 지나가는 이 것은 아드레날린인가. 암튼 뭔가 이상한 호르몬이 분비되고 있는 거 같았읍니다. 모든 움직임이 느려지는 느낌. 시간이 늘어지는 느낌. 슬로로로오오오우 모오오우우우쉬어어연. 소리도 느리이이이이게 들렸읍니다. 분명 욕 같은 것도 많이 섞여 있었던 것 같읍니다. 근데 잘 기억은 안 나요. ........그 때를 떠올리는 것만으로도 약간 지치네요. 오늘은 밖에 안 나가야겠읍니다. 이불 밖은 위험합니다. 여러분도 조심하세욥! 허억허억. 빨개진 손. 퍼래진 낮빛으로 기사와 저는 숨을 몰아쉬고 있었어요. 다리 밖으로 무사히 빠져 나온 것이었읍니다. 일단 갓길에 차를 대고 한동안 둘 다 말이 없었어요. 그러다가 먼저 정신을 차린 제가 나와 가구를 이곳에 내려 달라. 더 이상의 책임은 묻지 않겠다고 하였읍니다. 근데 대답이 없는 것이 아니겠어요. 그래서 인상 팍 쓰고 살펴 보니 기사란 놈이 자고 있었읍니다. 않이.....뭐 별, 아놔, 징짜. 그래서 일단 내리려고 하는데, 눈을 희번뜩 떴다가 다시 취한 사람처럼 게슴츠레해진 악취남이 팔을 붙들며, 약속한 이사비용을 요구했어요. 시간당 40불인가 그랬는데 이미 세 시간 정도 초과됐으니 120불을 달라고 하는 겁니다. 제가 임무를 완수하지도 않았는데 말도 안된다고 하면서, 지금 너때문에 죽을 위험 감수했다는 거 모르냐고 했더니 눈빛이 무서워지는 것이에요. 갑자기 겁이 확 나면서, 120불의 현금은 없고 수중에 있는 40불을 줄테니 기다려 달라, 인출해오겠다고 설득하여 하차한 저는 근처 소방서에 들어가 상황을 설명하고 도움을 요청했어요. 그랬더니 근육형의 소방관 아조씨(아마 나보다 훨씬 어릴)들이 나와서, 당장 테이블 내려주고 꺼지지 않으면 친절히 경찰에 신고해 주겠다고 협박해 주셨읍니다. 그랬더니 그 쭈구리가 금방 쫄아서 길가에 테이블을 끙끙거리며 내렸읍니다. 소방관 아조씨들이 그걸 받아서 소방서 안으로 일단 옮겨 주셨고요. 도망가려는 기사한테 그 40불도 마저 내놓으라고 해서 뺐으려는 걸, 제가 거지같으니 적선한 셈치겠다고 저 사람 기름이라도 넣고 밥이라도 먹어야 여기서 움직이지 않겠냐고 그냥 두라고 부탁드렸읍니다. 저는 소방서에서 이곳저곳에 전화를 걸며 다시금 이동수단을 알아봤으나, 여의치가 않았고 결국에는 소방관 아저씨 중 한 명의 승합차를 타고 안전하고 훈훈하게 집까지 올 수 있었읍니다, 이제는 다소 사연 어린 제 호두나무 식탁과 함께 말이죠. 그 기사는 마약에 취했는지 계속 거기서 몇 시간동안 자다가 다음 날 오전에 보니 사라졌다고 합니다. 집에 도착하여 판매자에게 구구절절 사연을 풀어 놓으며, 요로코롬 긴 하루를 보내느라 입금이 많이 늦었다, 지금 할테니 계좌를 알려달라고 했더니, 너 그런 일 겪고 무사히 돌아온 거 축하하는 마음으로 테이블은 선물하겠다고 저를 감동시키는 게 아니겠어요. 몇 번을 물어도 사양하길래, 그럼 작은 선물이라도 하고 싶다고 주소를 청한 뒤, 제가 만든 수제 비누 및 천연 화장품을 보내줬더니 엄청 좋아하더군요. 나중에 혹시 크래이그리스트 어글리스트 경험의 명예의 전당에 오른다면 자기네들도 꼭 썰 풀 때 언급해 달라며, 그리고 부탁이 있는데 다시는 거기 있는 개인트럭 쓰지 말라며, 덕분에 진귀한 이야기 잘 들었다고, 앞으로 좋은 일만 있길 바란다고 저의 제 호두나무 식탁의 미래를 축복해 주었읍니다. 이렇게 따스한 마음을 지닌 게이커플의 신혼집 식탁 제가 물려받아 사용하고 있으니, 저에게도 이 식탁을 매개체로 하여 따스함을 베풀 수 있을, 생각만 해도 배가 부르고 입꼬리 올라가는 그 날을 다시 한 번 꿈 꿔 봅니다. 긴 글, 읽어 주셔서 감사합니다. 이야기로 풀면 금방인데 글은 역시 제 글쓰기 능력이 미천하여 심히 오래 걸리는 군요. 그래도 논문보다는 빠르다는. 흑흑.
