(이번 글에는 책 내용과 '저자와의 대화'를 통해 알게된 내용이 뒤섞여 있음) 대부분 사람들은 정해진 일을 정해진 방식으로 한다. 반복되는 업무들에 치여서 아 새로운 일을 하고 싶다라고 생각하지만서도 창의성은 소수의 천재들에게 주어지는 재능이고 나하고는 거리가 먼 일이다라는 그런 생각. 나 역시 그런 생각을 하고 있고, 흔히 말하는 창조적인 작업에 대한 동경을 하고 있다. 내가 살아온 세월을 통해서 나 스스로 별로 창조적인 사람은 아니라는 사실을 확인할 수 있었기도 하고. 그래서 항상 새로운 것을 만들어내는 사람들의 이야기를 찾아보곤 했다. 그런데 이번엔 제목부터 '기획자의 습관'이네? 저자는 언어학을 전공하고 기호학과 철학을 공부한 기획자이다. 그는 기획을 삶으로 정의한다. 인간이 살아가는 동안에 할 수 밖에 없는 고민들, 지금 무엇을 선택할 것인가가 기획의 근간이라는 뜻을 가장 밑에 깔고 있다. 따라서 모든 인간은 '기획자'인 것이다. 자신의 삶을 디자인 하는 기획자. 스스로 지능이 뛰어나지 않다는 사실 (평범한 IQ임을 고등학교 지능검사에서 확인했다고 한다.)을 일찍부터 알고 있었지만 지금 기획자로 살고 있다는 것을 보여주며 누구라도 기획과 크리에이티브한 삶을 살 수 있다고 주장한다. 그러면서 기획에 정석은 없다는 것(누군가를 향한 디스 같긴 하지만 넘어가기로 하자)과 보다 창조적이기 위해 노력하고 공부했던 자신의 방법을 소개하면서 이 책을 읽는 이도 자신이 알지 못했던 기획력이 늘어날 수 있게 되기를 바라면서 책을 시작하고 있다 하늘 아래 새로운 것은 없다라고 한다. 때문에 최근에는 창조적 모방이라는 표현까지 등장하였다. 기존의 훌륭한 것들 답습한 뒤 재해석하여 새롭게 받아들이게끔 하는 것이 창조적인 결과물들을 만드는 가장 보편적인 방법이다. 저자는 이를 주장하기 위해 '동일한 것의 영원한 반복' 이라는 격언으로 이야기를 시작하고 있다. 기획의 출발은 관찰이다. 그리고 관찰은 외부로 향하는 것 뿐 아니라 자기 자신을 향한 관찰도 필요하다. 외부의 현상을 자신의 방식으로 이해하고 다시 외부로 표현할 때 참신한 결과물이 등장하게 되기 때문이다. 마치 원운동을 하는 물체는 원심력과 구심력이 균형을 이루는 것과 같다는 비유를 하지만 적절한 비유는 아니다. 구심력은 원운동 하는 물체에게 실제로 작용하는 힘이나 원심력은 관성에 의해 발생하는 것처럼 보이는 힘이기 때문이다. 과학적 의미를 바탕으로 해석하자면 자기 자신을 향한 관찰은 유의미하지만 외부에 대한 관찰은 구심력적 관찰에 의해 발생하는 부차적인 것처럼 해석될 수 있다. 다시 말해 책에서 표현하듯 구심력적 관찰과 원심력적 관찰 사이에 순서나 우열이 가려지며, 동등하게 작용해서 균형을 이루어야 안정적인 기획이 가능하다는 것과는 다소 차이가 있는 비유라고 할 수 있다. 자연 현상을 관념과 연결하여 설명하는 것은 사람들에게 쉽게 이해시키거나 새로운 해석을 보여주기 위한 두 가지 목적을 갖고 있는데 그 과정에서 때로는 비약이 발생하기도 한다. 이번 사례는 잘못된 비유를 한 것 같다. 기획은 단순하게 참신한 것, 외부에 새롭게 보이는 것이 아니라는 것을 보여주는 점에서는 의미있는 시작이었지만 고개를 갸웃하게 하는 비유를 보니 다소 맥이 빠지기도 하였다. 오늘날에는 '사진에 잘 나오게끔 만드는 디자인'이 중요하다. 흔히 말하는 '힙한 장소', '핫 플레이스'는 사진으로 복사되고 sns를 통해 보여질 만한 곳이어야 한다. 그렇기 때문에 기획자에게 sns와 해시태그는 좋은 힌트가 된다. 어떤 기획을 새로 시작할 때 해시태그를 통해 게시물들을 검색하고 그와 함께하는 해시태그를 취합하여 한 문장으로 정리할 수 있다면 성공이다. 예를들어 놀이공원(amusement park)를 검색하면 그와 함께 exciting, laughing, shouting, sharing moments, happy, fantasy, moving 등의 해시태그들이 등장하게 된다. 이를 정리해 한 단어로 표현하면 lively 라고 할 수 있을것이다. 그렇게 해서 놀이공원을 새로 정의해보면 '놀이기구를 타는 경험을 기본으로 하여 일상에 생기를 불어넣는 공간'이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 또 다른 사례로 온라인 티켓 판매 회사의 웰컴킷 기획이 등장한다. 사은품이라고 해서 처음에는 다이어리를 생각하고 있다는 말에 저자는 '회사명이 들어간 다이어리를 누가 좋아하겠냐고.' 생각한다. 바로 인스타그램에 들어가 티켓으로 검색해보자 한가지 공통점을 찾게 되는데 바로 티켓을 찍은 사진에는 대부분 티켓 뿐만 아니라 다른사람에게 보여주고 싶은 것 같은 책이나 상품들 그리고 잘 다듬어진 손톱과 네일아트들이 등장한다는 것이었다. 다시 말해 티켓을 구매하는 이들은 자신이 해당 상품을 구매할만한 능력이 있는 사람이고 스스로를 잘 관리하고 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶은 사람이고 할 수 있다. 이 사실을 바탕으로 저자는 네일아트 1회 이용권을 포함한 웰컴킷을 기획하고 클라이언트의 여성 직원들로부터 그야말로 폭발적인 지지를 얻을 수 있었다고 한다. 그리고 이 사실에 고무되어 최종 결재를 시도하나 최종 결정권자는 50대의 아저씨였으며 특정 연령과 성별에 대한 고정관념을 떠올리게 하고 싶지는 않지만 결과는 예상할 수 있는 그 결과가 되었다. 소비자 차원에서 최종적인 결정은 주로 여성에게 있다. 따라서 여성에게 어필하는 것은 구체적인 수치라기 보다는 공감할 수 있는 상황을 형성하는 것이 중요하다. 저자는 SUV를 구매하려는 한 가족의 일화를 통해 이 사실을 깨닫게 되었다고 한다. 새로나온 SUV가 좋다는 사실을 열정적으로 설명하는 남편의 모습에서 기획자의 모습을 찾을 수 있었다고 한다. "우리 이 차 사면 주말마다 여행갈 수 있다." "아이들과 함께 지내는 시간이 늘어난다." ... 책의 표현을 그대로 옮기자면, SUV 한 대가 '가족 여행'이었다가 '아이의 행복한 성장' 이기도 했다. '미래의 추억'이었다가, '움직이는 거실'이기도 했으며, 주말마다 늦잠 자고 TV만 보지 않겠다는 선언'이기도 했으며, 종국엔 '집안의 행복'으로 포지셔닝 되었다. 이후 몇 년이 지나 저자는 신형 SUV의 홍보 기획을 맡게 되었다. 운 좋게도 그는 SUV에 대한 소비자들의 관점을 경험했었고 누가 구매를 결정하는지도 이미 알고 있었다. 해당 SUV의 특징으로는 넓어진 적재공간이었다고 한다. 대부분의 사람들은 이를 스펙적으로 표현한다. 하지만 앞서 말했듯 대부분의 결정은 여성의 동의 혹은 결재를 통해 이루어진다. 아무리 수치적으로 자료를 제시하며 설득한다고 해도 뭔가 선뜻 선택하지 못하는 어려운 상황을 어떻게 타개할 것인가. 저자는 스토케(Stoke)라는 유모차를 등장시켰다. 유모차 계에 BMW란다. 근데 문제는 잘 접히지 않아서 차에 싣고 다니기 어려운 유모차이다. 저자는 이를 접목시켰다. '이 차에는 스토케가 들어갑니다.' 이 것으로 출시 4개월 만에 1년 목표치의 두 배를 판매할 수 있었다고 한다. (그리고 저자는 이를 바탕으로 다음 차량의 홍보 기획도 맡게 되었는데 그 차는 아슬란이며, 이 부분에서 대부분의 사람들이 웃음을 터트렸고 그 이후로 저자는 신차 홍보는 아직 하고 있지 못하고 있다고 하였다.) 럭셔리와 매스는 공존가능한 것인가? 라는 질문은 살면서 한 번쯤 들어볼 법한 이야기다. 특히 소비자를 대상으로 하는 사업에서는. 대부분의 소비자들은 낮은 가격으로 상급의 서비스를 제공받고자 한다. 막강한 구매력을 가진 소수만이 대중들과 차별화되는 서비스를 제공받기 위해 기꺼이 대가를 지불한다. 이 지점에서 회사들은 어떤 고객층을 타겟으로 할 것인가 고민한다. 저자는 부산에서 럭셔리한 주상복합 네이밍 기획 입찰에 뛰어들었다. 그러자 클라이언트가 내건 조건이 위와 같은 조건이었다. 럭셔리, 하지만 많은 사람들이 찾을 수 있게 하라. 저자는 속으로 '이게 되나?' 하고 있는데 경쟁자들은 "네 됩니다." "네 됩니다." "네 됩니다." 모두 예스맨이어서 난감해했다고 한다. 시간이 흘러 프레젠테이션 당일이 되었는데도 그 때 까지 준비가 안 되서 골치를 썩히고 있을때 최종적으로 내린 결론은 '럭셔리 온리' 였다. 섞일 수 없는 물과 기름같은 두 개념을 섞어서 이도저도 아니게 하느니 차라리 럭셔리만을 지향해서 차별화를 이루겠다는 전략이었다. (그리고 안 되면 말지 뭐. 따낸다고 하더라도 맘에 들게끔 못할거다라고 생각했다는 것은 저런 대범한 전략을 택할 수 있게 만드는 또 다른 근거가 되었다.) 그리고 그의 승부수는 성공한다. 이후 해당 건물의 브랜드 네이밍을 본격적으로 시작하면서 어떤 이름이 좋을까 고민하던 중에 구글맵으로 단지를 살펴보다가 누군가가 "어 다이아몬드 모양이네." 라고 했다. 조금 찌그러진 모양이긴 했지만, 대략 오각형이니까 다이아몬드라고 하자. 다이아몬드에 관한 모든 것을 조사하다 다이아몬드의 무게를 나타내는 단위가 캐럿이라고 하고 줄여서 ct 라고 한다. 눈치 빠른 분들은 여기까지 하면 어딘지 감을 잡으셨을수도 있다. 럭셔리....씨티.... (이후 저자는 그 이름을 뉴스에서 듣고 어? 했다고 한다.) 저자는 트렌드 리포트를 신뢰하지 않는다고 한다. 이 좁은 땅에서 뭐 그렇게 변화가 심하냐고. 매 년 새롭게 등장하는 트렌드라는게 있을수가 있냐고 비판하며 그런 자료를 찾아볼 바에는 밖으로 나가서 길거리를 돌아다니는게 더 도움된다고 주장한다. (누군가를 향한 디스 같지만 또 넘어가기로 하자.) 길거리를 돌아다니면서 무엇이 존재하는지 사람들은 어떻게 다니는지를 관찰하면 본인 스스로 트렌드를 느낄수 있다. 또 한가지 사례. 인천공항에서 자신들이 왜 업계 1위를 달성했는지 해놓고도 그들 스스로 몰라서 이유를 분석하고 차후 홍보 계획을 수립해달라는 제안을 받게 되었다고 한다. 저자는 인천공항에 두 달간 거의 살다시피 하면서 직원부터 이용객까지 눈에 띠는 사람들과 대화하면서 인천공항의 성공 이유를 찾았다. 그 결과 인천공항의 성공은 아주 간단한 지시사항 하나에서 출발함을 확인할 수 있었다. 노무현 대통령은 인천공항에 서비스 개선 위원회를 설립하라는 지시를 내린다. 왜냐하면 이전까지는 인천공항에 개입하는 정부 부처들이 많았고 이는 서비스 방향이 계속적으로 바뀐다는 것을 의미했다. 이를 일원화하자 서비스의 방향이 일정해졌고 동시에 신속한 수하물 처리 속도와 승객 예고 시스템을 도입하여 출입국에 걸리는 시간은 감소하고 탑승 대기전 쇼핑에 투자할 수 있는 여유가 늘어났으며 서비스의 동선이 분화되자 이용객들이 인천공항의 서비스를 체감할 수 있는 시간이 늘어나게 되었다. 때문에 설문조사 등을 통해 이용객들의 만족도가 늘어남을 확인할 수 있게 된 것이다. 저자는 이러한 사실을 확인하고서 인천공항이 수행하는 업의 본질을 다음과 같이 정리하였다.
