 한참 컨져링이 찬사를 받던 때였다. "무서운 장면 없이 무서운 영화" 라는 얼토당토 않은 마케팅에 낚여서 극장을 들어서자마자 후회하기 시작했다. 화면에서는 오만원을 받고서도 가져가기 싫은 더럽게 못생긴 인형이 나오고 있었다. 저 따위로 생긴 인형이라면 퇴마사를 안 불러도 저주가 걸려있을 거란걸 알 수 있지 않나. 도무지 이해할 수 없는 미적감각의 소유자가, 지가 좋다고 가져와놓고는 얼마나 그 인형에 시달렸는지 푸는 썰을 들으며, 나는 방시혁 닮은 못생긴 물고기 표정을 하고 영화에 몰입하려 애썼다. 안 무섭대며. 무서운데? 무서워, 무서워, 크흑, 무서워 신발. 컨져링은 그렇게 나의 체질을 알려준 영화였다. 나는 공포 영화를 정말 못보는 사람이라는 걸 깨닫게 된 것이다.그 때까지 나는 내가 그래도 공포를 잘 보고, 평만 좋다면 세상 모든 영화를 보듯이 공포 영화도 기꺼이 즐길 수 있을 줄 알고 있었다. 아서라, 오만방자한 이여. 나는 두 시간의 러닝타임 중 한 시간 사십분은 실눈을 뜨고, 아바바바 귓구멍을 두드리며 스스로와의 싸움을 벌려야 했다. 드디어 귀신의 정체가 드러나고, 본격적으로 빙의에 성공해 질풍노도의 귀차성징을 겪는 클라이맥스에서야 이 영화를 "액션영화"로 즐길 수 있었다. 레프트 라이트, 훅훅. 가재는 게편, 인간인지라 인간님을 열심히 응원하던 나는 해피엔딩을 만끽하며 미소를 지었다. 힘들었다, 다시는 공포를 안봐야지. 인간의 욕심은 끝이 없고 같은 실수를 반복한다. 깃털펜으로 싸인만 휘갈겨놓는다면 셰익스피어의 말이라 해도 믿을 것 같은 이 만고불변의 인터넷 밈은 나를 예외로 내버려두지 않았다. 좀 더 정확히 적용하자면, 인간의 호기심은 끝이 없고, 정도가 내 경우에 들어맞을 것이다. 나는 보았다. 어떤 영화의 트레일러를. 2000년대 중반 디씨인사이드 스갤을 달구던 싱하형의 포스에 육박하는 그 무언가를 정말 오랜만에 접하고 나는 살짝 들뜨고 말았다. 정말정말 심각하고 진지한 표정인데, 머리로는 이를 이해하는데, 가슴이 이를 거부하며 으잌크킄크크킄크를 날려대는 상황. 이 치열한 자아분열은 내게 화순 보은사 입구의 사천왕 표정으로 표출되었다. 그 충격을 온 미간에 모으고 눈을 부라리며 가슴 속 호기심의 아궁이에 장작을 던져넣었다. 이것은. 이것은! 나는 보러 가야 할 공포영화가 생기고 만 것이다. 아. 정말 창피하지만 고백해야겠다. 나는 이 영화를 보며 살짝 겁을 먹었다. 리얼리티라고는 강남 성모병원에서 라섹 두번 받고 봐도 찾기 힘든 이 영화의 마네킹 귀신님에게 나는 쫄아버렸다. 나는 진짜 공포를 못보나보다.... 이딴 귀신에 겁을 먹다니. 영화를 보면서 자괴감을 느낀 건 정말 오랜만이었다. 보기 싫다던 친구들을 억지로 끌고가 봤다는 죄책감에 조폭 마누라 2의 쌍팔년도 개그를 억지로 웃었을 때보다 더 속상했다. 그래도 그 때는 주변사람을 배려한다는 대의라도 있었는데. 주섬주섬 살짝 처진 자존심을 털고서, 나는 무서운 집에 집중하기 시작했다. 덤벼라 이 쌈마이야! 부작용이 생겼다. 겁먹지 않겠다며 긴장을 끌어올렸던 탓인지 이 영화의 자비없는 롱테이크에 몸이 늘어지기 시작했다. 상상속 콘트라스트 조명을 얼굴에 쏘고서 마이클 콜리오네의 위엄을 장착했지만 영화는 아무 공격도 하지 않았다. 잠깐만~ 하고 영화는 끊임없이 준비운동만을 했다. 나의 모든 사고와 이해와 감각을 받아쳐내는 장면들이 이어졌다. 의미가 있겠지!! 아니거든? 이어지는 화면 속 영상미가 있겟지!! 아닌데? 의미없음으로 의미없음을 알리는 부조리한 센스가 있겠지!! 아~~니거든?? 아아아아아아아아아아 여긴 어디? 나는 누구? 아!! 난 무서운 집을 보기 위해 귀찮은 몸을 끌고 종로구 미로스페이스까지 왔다가 밑도, 끝도 없는 낭떠러지에서 의식의 추락을 경험하고 있다아아아아아아. 소극장 치고는 은근히 편했던 좌석에서 내 허리 각도는 수평에 가까워졌고, 몸은 파묻혔고, 입은 벌어지고, 머리는 오른쪽 어깨로 기울었다. 빨리....빨리 귀신 내놔라. 예? 뭐라고요? 못들은척 양병간 감독의 롱테이크가 이어졌다. 먹을 걸 준비하는 장면인데 심지어 식욕도 자극하지 않았다. 대한민국 중년여성이 요리를 잘 할거라는 편견에 대한 저항인지, 맛대가리 없는 음식준비 장면만 이어졌다. 도대체 왜 구윤희 여사는 토스트 따위를 한답시고 앞치마를 두르고, 두건을 메는 정성을 보이는가. 그리고서는 한식대첩 심영순 아주머니를 고문할 것 같은 토스트가 나왔다. 암만 배가 고픈 상태에서 봐도 진짜 안땡기게 생긴 토스트였다.사람이 먹는 걸 영화가 보여주고 있는데 이렇게 뭘 먹고 싶지 않은 느낌을 받을 수가 있다니. 왜 슬라이스 햄 대신 프랑크 소세지를 토스트에 끼울까. 왜 또 양파는 안끼우고 따로 먹는가. 가슴아 진정해. 머리로 이 화면을 받아들이자. 음 그래 이 장면은 영화 속 등장인물이 무언가를 먹는 화면을 통해 보여주는 일상의 묘사로구나. 알겠어. 이제 넘어가자. 그런데 양병간 감독은 예? 뭐라고요? 라며 구윤희씨의 한 입 한입 음식물을 씹는 장면을 정성스레 보여주었다. 그만, 그마아아아아안. 진짜 할 수만 있다면 별풍선 천개쯤 쏘고 이 먹방을 끝내고 싶었다. 냐암냐암 구윤희씨가 토스트를 씹고 있었다. 이때, 이 영화는 용서할 수 없는 짓을 저질렀다. 한입을 베어물고 컷. 다시 한 입을 베어물고 컷. 한 입을 베어물고 컷. 한 입을 베어물고 컷. 영화 속 시간의 흐름은 그대로, 내용도 그대로. 그런데 샷들이 이어지며 구윤희씨의 식사에 엄청난 리듬감만 부여했다. 야이씨 쓰잘데기 없는 데서 필름 쪼개지 말고 씬을 넘기라고! 영화는 다시 딴청을 피우더니 진짜 집요하게 구윤희씨의 식사장면을 다 보여주었다. 양병간 이 잔인한 인간....... 겁나게 클리셰적인 표현을 써야겠다. 전환점을 찾고자 할 때마다 우리가 찾는 그 도시. 바로 그 도시. 이제 좀 이야기가 나아가나 싶었는데 경기도 오산이었다. 설거지도 보여주었다. 구윤희씨의 스토커가 된 기분이었다. 왜 영화 속에서 씨씨티비를 보는 경비원들이 늘상 처 자빠져 있는지 알았다. 아무 일도 없고 누가 맛탱이 없는 토스트 먹는 장면이나 내내 봐야하는데 그걸 어떻게 버틸까. 이야기가 움직이지 않으니 내 몸이 움직이기 시작했다. 허리를 비틀고, 머리를 왼쪽 어깨로 이동시켰다. 신음소리도 나왔다. 그리고 의식했다. 나는 오늘 새벽 네시에 일어났었다는 것을. 육체적 피로가 눈꺼풀을 건드리기 시작했다. 안돼......구윤희씨는 이를 닦고 있었다. 진짜 말 그대로 먹고 싸고 한 인간의 사생활 중 가장 시시하고 내밀한 부분은 다 보게 되었다. 그런데 재미가 없어. 에어컨 바람은 너무 차가웠고 나는 안간힘을 쓰며 영화를 보고 있었다. 오후 한시반 예비군 정신교육 도중에 이걸 틀어놓으면 과연 몇놈이나 안 자고 버틸 수 있을까. 이 때부터는 뜨문뜨문 장면들이 이어졌다. 내 육체와 의식이 영화를 자체편집하기 시작했으니까. 눈을 떴다 감으니 구윤희씨가 김장을 하고 있었다. 혼자서 김장을 왜 하는거야? 대체 왜? 김치에 설탕만 수북히 뿌리면 백종원 버금가는 상세하고도 상세한 요리 장면이 이어졌다. 마늘을 다진다. 무를 슬라이스 칼로 얇게 썬다. 다라이에 썬 무와 다진 마늘을 넣고 하얀 게 뭔지는 모르겠는데 아무튼 끌여놓았던 국물을 붓는다. 고춧가루를 뿌린다(두 종류의 고춧가루던데 하나는 뭔지 모르겠다) 새우젓을 얹는다.까나리 액젓을 한바퀴 휭 둘러친다. 양은 넉넉히, 콸콸콸~.버무린다. 옆에 한잎 한잎 따놓았던 배춧잎을 한장씩 양념에 무친다. 하나 싸먹어도 본다. 이게 뭐라고 이렇게 쓰고 있는건가. 화가 난다. 그런데 어제 나는 이걸 계속 보고 있어야 했다고. 나중에는 뭐가 탔다고 호들갑을 떨더니 구윤희씨가 짜장면 비스무레한 걸 만들어서 먹고 있었다. 짜장라면은 그래도 나름 맛있게 보였다. 뭔가 근사한 요리처럼 보였다. 나 말고도 사람들이 오오- 하며 감탄사를 내뱉었다. 하도 말같지도 않은 요리들이 이어지니 짜장라면이 미슐랭 별 두개짜리 레스토랑 필살기 같이 보였다. 의식의 자체편집 두번째. 드디어 고든 윤희 렘지씨가 요리와 시식을 멈추고 잠에 들려고 했다. 아 오늘도 고단했다~ 라고 말할 때 나는 진심으로 고개를 끄덕였다. 당신은 정말 보는 사람을 고단하게 하는 하루를 보낸 게 맞습니다. 텅텅 비고, 휑해보이는 그 공간에서, "왜 이렇게 무섭지?" "음식이 다 탔네" "빨래를 널어야겠어" 같은 혼잣말을 계속 중얼거리며 먹기만 할 뿐 다른 걸 안하면 한 게 없어도 피곤할 것이다. 이 영화의 거실은 진짜 보는 사람을 미치게 만드는 미쟝센을 갖추고 있었다. 넓은데, 가구라고는 하나도 없다. 거실에 소파도 없고, 티비도 없고, 책장도 없고, 선반도 없고, 그냥 바닥이랑 공간이랑 그 공간을 채우는 산소나 이산화탄소 같은 기체만 있다. 영화 큐브가 대한민국 가정집으로 구현된 인상이었다. 아 컨센트도 보이긴 했네. 보고 있으면 절대 사람이 살았다는 흔적은 찾을 수가 없는 그런 공간이었다. 진짜 너무너무 이상한 거다. 평범한 아줌마가 소파도 티비도 책장도 선반도 없는 거실에서 창문을 바라보고 넋두리를 내뱉다가 밥을 열심히 먹고 요리도 하고 청소도 하고. 이건 병맛도 아니었다. 그냥 이 세상이 아닌 것 같은 그런 초현실적인 감각이었다. 로만 폴란스키의 피아니스트에 나오는 폐허 장면에 비견될만한 그런 느낌이었다. 한 쪽은 너무 장엄하고 압도적이어서 생기는 초월적인 미가 오히려 현실을 상기시키며 싸하게 만든다면, 다른 한 쪽은 너무 평범하고 시시한데 평범함조차도 메꾸지 못할 만큼 생긴 여백들이 현실을 현실같지 않게 만든다고 할까. 구윤희씨가 창문을 통해 달을 바라볼때 하도 편집이 개판으로 되서 달에 처맞은 느낌이 들었다. 쓰러지려는 내 의식을 붙들고 양병간 감독은 다시 롱테이크의 지옥으로 나를 끌고 갔다. 지루하고 피곤한데, 너무 지루하면 잠도 깬다는 걸 아는 사람이 있을 것이다. 아까까지 오던 잠이 안오니까 좀 환장할 것 같았다. 영화에서는 구윤희씨가 불을 끄고 잠을 자려 누웠다. 여기서 영화는 네오 리얼리얼리즘을 과시했다. 잠이 안오면 시계 초침소리가 계속해서 들린다. 그래, 그걸 알려주면 됐는데, 이 영화는 굳이 실시간으로 그걸 계속 보여주었다. 째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍째깍. 내가 좀 길게 쓴 것 같다고? 해당 샷은 진짜 이거의 한 여섯배는 길게 이어졌다. 이 느낌을 쓰려면 한 열단락은 더 째깍 소리로 채워야 한다. 심지어 극장에서 사람들이 눈치를 보다가 웃기 시작했다. 왜 이렇게 길어 핥핥핥핥 하고. 그런데 그 웃음이 끝나고도 초침소리가 이어졌다. 잠을 못이루는 구윤희씨보다 내가 더 미칠 것 같았다. 꼭 이렇게 리얼했어야 했을까. 구윤희씨. 이해합니다. 저도 진짜 잠이 자고 싶었습니다. 단지 다른 점이라면 구윤희씨는 스탠드 등을 켜고 책을 읽기 시작했다. 내가 진짜 궁금했던 건, 그 책이 전화번호부처럼 보였기 때문이었다. 절대 소설처럼은 안생겼었다. 사이즈가 어떤 안내 책자만큼 크고 두꺼웠는데, 도대체 저걸 침대맡에 두는 건 뭔지, 저런 걸 잠이 안온다고 읽기 시작하는 건 뭔지 궁금해졌다. 이 때부터는 영화 내용을 온전하게 곱씹을 수가 없다. 깨보니 구윤희씨가 어 무서워 하면서 방을 왔다리 갔다리 하고, 나가보니 부엌 식탁에 남편 같은 형체가 앉아있다 뿅 사라지고. 마네킹이 여기저기 출몰하고. 그렇게 자다 깨면 구윤희씨가 막 귀신욕을 하고 있고 다시 눈을 떠보면 구윤희씨가 무섭다며 계속 혼잣말을 하고 있고 시끄러워서 눈꺼풀을 다시 열어보면 구윤희씨가 막 계단을 오르내리며 뭘 쫓고 있었다. 그런데 눈을 뜨니까 또 똑같은 장면이 나오고 있어서 처음에는 내가 아까 장면을 보고 있는 꿈을 꾸는 줄 알았다. 나는 졸다 깨고, 졸다 깨고, 구윤희씨는 아까 뛰었던 계단에서 또 뛰고 있고, 뭐하나 지켜보고 있으면 식칼을 들고 마네킹이랑 막 싸우고 있고, 거실에서는 베사메 무쵸를 부르며 혼자 땐스를 추고 있고. 살바도르 달리가 붓으로 헤집어놓은 내 뇌를 양병간씨가 필름에 발라놨다는 생각이 들었다. 시간의 방향은 일직선인가? 빛의 속도가 일정하다면, 줄어드는 건 시간이 아닌가요? 나는 어두운 영화관에서 빛이 된다. 아, 아까 봤던 그 장면이 다시 이어지고 있다. 대사가 다르니 다른 장면인가? 아까의 장면이 현실이라고 나는 어떻게 확신할 수 있지? 인간은 인지할 뿐이야. 너 대한민국 아줌마 무시해? 식칼에 몽둥이가 깍둑깍둑 후두두두두두. 아무리 연기라지만 진짜 식칼을 들고 저렇게 연기하는 건 좀 위험해 보이기도 하는데. 마네킹을 찔러 찔러. 구윤희씨 의외로 맷집이 좋군. 아까까지 요리하고 청소하던 아줌마가 귀신이 나오니까 갑자기 내집장만을 자랑하며 식칼로 찔러죽이려고 하고 있다. 무서워. 너 찔러 죽일거야. 무서워. 너 찔러죽일거야. 요 현실. 우리가 느끼는 그것은 사실 누군가의 감독 아래 스크린을 통해 비춰지고 있는 건지도 몰라요. 의식이 눈을 감았다가 다시 뜬다. 베싸메~ 베싸메 무쵸~ 꼬모 씨 푸에라 에스타 라 노체 울띠마 베쓰~ 당연히 한글 가사로 부를 줄 알았는데. 구윤희씨가 귀신과 싸우는 게 부러워. 나는 꿈에서 싸우면 맨날 몸이 안움직여서 낑낑대면서 주먹질하다가 막 혼자 겁먹었기만 했으니까. 원빈도 꿈을 꾸면 별로 날렵하게 움직이지 못하는 거 아닐까. 공중으로 날아랏!! 귀신 너 팔 잘림. 너 아웃. 칼로 배때지를 쑤욱. 고윤희 승! 인 줄 알았지만 뒤에서 마네킹이 목을 조름!! 의식이 흐른다아아아아아아 정말 이 때 극장에서 정신이 뒤엉켜있었다. 생각해보면 이런 영화는 또 반쯤 이렇게 정신줄 놓은 상태에서 보는 게 제대로 보는 게 아닌가 싶다. 왜 옛날에는 스페이스 오뒷세이의 그 장면을 약 빨고 봤다고들 하던데. 그래서 졸면서 영화를 봤던 내가 제일 잘 본게 아닌가 싶기도 하고. 아무튼 영화는 구윤희씨가 마네킹에게 육체를 빼앗긴(건지 뭔지 모름)결말로 끝이 났고, 이 개같지도 않은 토요일밤은 그렇게 얼추 지나갔다. 아, 그래도 엔딩 크레딧이 재미있었다. 나운규와 심형래 못지 않은 만능 엔터테이너 양병간! 하지만 호기심으로 보기에는 지랄맞은 롱테이크와 미쟝센, 인간 고윤희의 자연상태가 캐릭터 고윤희에 빙의된 상태의 발쏘드 연기 때문에 힘들었다. 못만들려고 작정을 하니까 이렇게 해괴한 영화도 나오네. 그래, ....은 경험이었다. @하아앗 제자리 뛰기!! 카메라여 내게 오랏!! 나는 뛰고 있어어어엇!!
