- 악셀 호네트의 「인정투쟁」 중 일부를 정리한 내용입니다. 제가 심리분석은 많이 몰라서 잘못 이해한 점이 있을 수 있습니다. 지적해주시면 감사하겠습니다 :) - 아래에도 달아두었지만, 대상관계 이론은 당시의 관계 장애를 임상적으로 분석하여 귀납적으로 구성한 이론입니다. 즉, 당시 서구 사회에 존재하는 맥락과 분리하여 생각할 수 없습니다. 1980년대 중, 후반의 저작들을 중심으로 내용이 전개되고 있지만, 제가 느끼기에는 지나치게 모성 신화에 매여있는 느낌이 듭니다. 이 점을 감안하되, 인간의 심리발달이 출발하는 원초적인 상태를 타인과의 정서적 결합으로 보았다는 점에 주목해 주시면 될 듯합니다. 1. 대상관계이론이란? 대상관계이론(Object Relations Theory)은 한 개인이 타인과의 정서적 결합 과정에서 [공생을 위한 자기 포기]와 [개인적 자기주장] 사이의 균형을 어떻게 상호주관적으로 유지하느냐에 따라 관계의 성패가 달렸다1)는 관점을 취하는 연구 전통입니다. 그리고 한 개인이 타인과의 정서적 관계에서 유지하는 구속성과 자립성 사이의 균형은 유아기 때 부모와 겪은 상호작용, 특히 어머니2)와의 상호작용에서 기인한다고 보지요. 대상관계이론이 등장하기 이전 심리분석은 프로이트와 그 계승자들을 중심으로 하여 아동의 성적욕구발달에 초점을 맞추었다고 합니다. 성적 충동인 리비도를 중심으로 심리 발달을 설명하는 전통적인 관점에서는, 아동의 상호작용 상대자는 그들이 리비도의 충족 대상으로 등장할 때만 의미가 있다고 보았지요. 그러나 경험적 연구가 누적되면서 어린아이와 타인의 관계를 리비도적 충동이 실현되는 과정에서 수행되는 단순한 기능으로 바라보는 이론은 힘을 잃습니다. 경험적 연구들이 공통되게 지적한 바는 정서적 결합이 유아의 성장에서 독립적인 중요성을 지닌다는 것입니다. 르네 스피츠(Réne A. Spritz)의 관찰에 따르면 모든 신체적 욕구가 확실하게 충족될 때에도 어머니의 관심이 사라지면 유아는 심각한 행동 장애를 일으킵니다. 할로(H. F. Harlow)의 원숭이 애착 실험 또한 생명 유지를 위한 본능 충족 외에 정서적 접촉의 중요성을 보여줍니다3). 존 볼비(John Bowlby)는 유아는 이미 생후 첫 달부터 타인과 친밀하게 관계할 수 있는 적극적인 자세를 발전시키며, 이를 통해 이후의 모든 정서적 애착관계의 토대를 쌓는다고 합니다. 다니엘 스턴(Daniel Stern)은 어머니와 아이의 상호행위는 양자가 서로 감정이나 느낌을 함께 체험할 수 있는 능력을 연습하는 고도로 복잡한 과정 속에서 이루어진다고 합니다. 상기한 경험적 보고들은 유아의 사회화 과정을 타인과의 정서적 관계, 그리고 사회적 상호작용 차원에서 해석해야 할 필요성을 제시합니다. 프로이트 중심의 전통적 관점에서는 심리 발달을 리비도적 충동과 자기 지배능력 사이의 관계로 보았습니다. 즉, '독백적'인 관계로만 바라보았던 것이지요. 심리분석적 대상관계 이론은 프로이트 이론이 리비도적 충동의 조직화라는 테제에만 초점을 두었다는 점을 비판하면서, 타인과 맺는 정서적 관계를 성숙화 과정의 또 하나의 구성요소로 끌고 옵니다. 아래에서는 그 중 영국의 심리분석가인 도널드 위니캇(Donald W. Winnicott)의 논의를 중심으로 정리하고자 합니다4). 2. 도널드 위니캇의 대상관계 이론 위니캇의 화두는 ['어머니와 아이를 미분화 된 단일체의 단계에서 벗어날 수 있게 함으로써 결국에는 양자가 서로를 독립된 개인으로 수용하고 사랑할 줄 알게 하는 상호행위과정이란 어떤 특성을 지니는가']였습니다. 심리분석적 소아과 의사였던 도널드 위니캇은 유아들의 '충분히 좋은' 사회화 조건에 대한 설명을 찾는 데에 일생 동안 몰두했지요. 질문에서 드러나듯이, 위니캇은 유아와 어머니 각각 보다는 그들의 관계에 초점을 맞췄습니다. 심리분석을 할 때 유아를 독립적이고 개별된 탐구 대상으로 간주하는 것을 잘못된 추상화라 보았지요. 왜냐하면 실질적으로 유아는 생후 오랜 기간을 어머니의 보호를 통해 자신의 행동을 실천적으로 보완할 수 밖에 없기 때문입니다. 즉, 인간의 삶의 초기에 미분화된 상호주관성 단계인 공생기를 가정할 수 있으리라 보았던 것이지요. 물론, 프로이트 중심의 전통적인 관점에서도 '어머니'는 리비도의 충족 대상인 타자들과는 다른 특별함을 지니는 것으로 간주합니다. 그러나 위니캇의 입장에서 독특한 것은 유아가 어머니를 바라보는 관점 뿐만 아니라, 어머니가 유아를 바라보는 관점까지도 포함했다는 점입니다. 어머니는 임신 기간 동안 아이를 자신과 적극적으로 동일시하는 경향이 있으며, 출산 후에도 이러한 경향은 이어진다고 하지요5). 위니캇은 이를 '원초적 상호주관성'이라는 개념으로 포섭합니다. 위니캇은 대상관계이론가들 중에서도 인간의 성숙 과정을 관계를 통해 해명하려는 면이 강합니다. 원초적 상호주관성 개념에서도 드러나듯이, 위니캇은 처음부터 아이의 성숙 과정을 어머니와 아이 사이의 공통적 상호주관적 행위를 통해서만 해명할 수 있는 과제로 바라보지요. 처음에 편입되어 있던 공생적 단일체의 상태로부터 각자 독자적인 존재로 차별화 되어가는 과정이 심리적인 발달인 것입니다. 프로이트 이론에서는 개인적인 잠재적 충동이 조직화 되는 과정 속에서 건강한 인격체로 성장하게 된다고 하지만, 위니캇은 타인과의(여기서는 어머니) 상호작용 구조상의 변화를 주된 요인으로 간주합니다. 초창기에 어머니와 아이는 자신의 욕구를 충족시키기 위해 서로에게 완전히 의존합니다. 상대방에 대한 개인적 경계는 존재하지 않습니다. 위니캇이 가정하기로는, 임신 기간 동안 일어난 어머니의 자녀에 대한 심리적 동일시가 유아가 지닌 종속적인 의존 상황과 맞물려서 이러한 절대적 의존 상태가 지속됩니다. 유아는 자신과 환경을 인지적으로 구분할 수 없습니다. 상호행위 상대자의 보완적 도움이 없다면 연속성이 보장된 체험지평이 주어지지 않지요. 이러한 미분화된 경험세계에서는 생존을 위한 욕구 충족 뿐만 아니라, 신체적 접촉쾌감을 유지하는 것까지도 삶의 필수적인 성질에 속합니다. 이 시기에 어머니는 유아를 '지탱'합니다. 어머니에 의해 '지탱된' 신체적 보호공간 안에서만 유아는 자신의 운동 및 감각 경험을 단일한 체험 중심으로 병렬시킬 줄 알게 되고, 이를 통해 신체를 움직이는 방식을 발전시킨다고 하지요. 각자가 공생적 통일체의 단계에서 벗어나 일부분이나마 새로운 독립성을 획득하게 되면 이전 단계가 끝납니다. 어머니는 유아와 맺고 있던 최초의 신체적 동일시를 영원히 지니고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 시간이 지나면서 일상생활로 복귀하게 되거나, 친밀한 다른 상대와의 접촉을 재개하게 되지요. 점차 유아는 많은 시간 동안 혼자 있게 됩니다. 이러한 어머니의 '탈적응 단계'에 상응하여, 유아 역시 기존에는 제한되어 있었던 반성 공간을 확장하게 됩니다. 자신과 환경을 인지적으로 구분할 수 있는 지적 발전이 일어나지요. 평균적으로 유아는 생후 6개월 이후부터 청각적, 시각적 신호를 장차 자신의 욕구가 충족될 것이라는 지시로 이해하기 시작한다고 합니다. 짧은 기간 동안은 어머니의 부재를 참을 수 있게 됩니다. 그러면서 어머니라는 개인을 자신의 통제 밖에 있는 어떤 세계 속의 객관적인 존재로 체험합니다. 반대로 자신의 종속성을 맹아적으로 지각하게 되지요. 오히려 이전에는 '절대적 의존성'이기에 미분화되어 지각되지 않던 종속성이 지각되기 시작합니다. 위니캇은 이를 '상대적 지각성'이라 개념 붙입니다. 바로 이 시기가, 한 개인의 타인에 대한 결합능력이 결정적 발전을 이루는 지점입니다. 성숙한 사랑의 기초적 모형인 '타자 속에서 자기 자신으로 존재함'이 형성되기 시작하는 것이지요. 어머니의 독립성이 증가하면서 유아는 새로운 도전에 직면합니다. 어머니를 '고유한 권리를 가지고 있는 존재로 인정'하기 시작해야 하는 것이지요. 위니캇은 유아를 둘러싼 사회적 환경이 두 가지 심리적 매커니즘의 적용을 허용해야만 이 과제를 해결할 수 있다고 합니다. 하나는 '파괴'이고, 다른 하나는 '이행기 현상'입니다. 3. '파괴'와 '이행기 현상' '파괴'는 어머니의 독립성 증대에 대한 유아의 반응입니다. 유아는 자기 마음대로 처리하기 어려운 현상을 지각하면서 공격적 행위 태세를 발전시킵니다. 이 공격은 어머니를 향하지요. 어머니의 신체를 때리고, 물고, 찌르고 하는 것입니다. 위니캇은 이를 일종의 목적에 찬 행위로 봅니다. 유아가 자신에게 정서적으로 충만한 대상이 실제로 영향을 미칠 수 없는, 이른바 '객관적' 현실에 속하는지 여부를 시험한다는 것이지요. 그리고 여기에서 어머니가 유아의 파괴적 공격을 보복하지 않고 견디어 낸다면, 유아는 비로소 자신만이 아니라 다른 주체들도 존재하는 세계로 진입하게 된다고 봅니다. 어머니가 유아의 파괴적 행위를 저항능력을 갖춘 개인으로서 견디어낸다면, 유아는 자신의 파괴적 충동들을 통합함으로써 프로이트 이론에서 흔히 지적하는 '나르시스적인 절대권력에 대한 착각' 없이 어머니를 사랑할 수 있게 된다고 합니다6). '파괴' 경험을 통해 유아는 공생적으로 부여된 어머니에 대한 애착과 어머니의 자립성에 대한 경험을 화해시킬 수 있게 됩니다. '이행기 현상'은 자립성과 공생 사이의 초기 형태의 균형에서 이어지는 단계입니다. 생후 몇 개월이 지난 아이는 자신을 둘러싼 물질적 환경의 대상들과 고도의 정서적 관계를 맺으려는 강한 경향을 보입니다. 인형, 담요 등의 이행 대상(transitional object)에 대한 집착이 그것이지요. 아이들은 이행 대상들을 배타적 소유물로 취급하며, 때로는 부드럽게 사랑하다가도 떄로는 격렬하게 '파괴'합니다. 쉽게 짐작할 수 있듯이, 이 대상들은 외부세계로 사라져버린 어머니에 대한 대체물로 볼 수 있습니다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 아이는 분리의 체험을 넘어서, 초창기에 어머니가 자신의 요구에 절대적으로 귀기울여주던 당시 지니던 '자신의 전능함에 대한 근원적 환상'(위에서는 '나르시스적인 절대권력에 대한 착각'이라고 칭했던)을 계속 유지하려는 것으로 보입니다. 하지만 그러한 관점으로만 이행기 현상을 바라볼 수는 없습니다. 직관적으로는 잘 이해가 되지 않지만, 위니캇은 아이에게 이행 대상이 가상이냐 실재냐 하는 물음이 중요하지 않다고 정리합니다.
