여기에서나, 포탈이나 여타 많은 축구 커뮤니티에서 지속적인 문제가 되고 있는 히딩크 이야기를 한번 써 보려고 합니다. 원래 어제 쓰려고 했는데 갑자기 술 약속이 잡혔었어서...ㅎㅎ 1. 히딩크를 이야기 하려면, 앞서서 현재 축협의 상황을 알아볼 필요가 있습니다 현대 일가, 그 중에서도 정몽준씨의 소유물이라는 느낌이 강한 대한민국 축구협회. 물론 그에 대항하는 소수의 반대 세력이 존재합니다만, 그 비율이나 자금력. 힘은 현대가의 파워에 비할게 아니죠. 정몽준씨가 16년의 장기 집권을 마치고 축구협회장 자리를 물러난 뒤에도 지속적으로 그 입김이 닿은 인물 - 조중연과 정몽규 - 들이 계속 협회장 투표에서 당선되는걸 보면 그 파워가 어느 정도인지를 익히 짐작할 수 있습니다. 2. 그렇다고 해서 현대가를 비난만 할 건 아닙니다. 왜냐하면, 당연히 폐해가 있지만 대우가 망한 이후에 현대만큼 적극적으로 국내 축구에 투자하고 있는 집단이 없거든요. 기본적으로 소유주야 다르지만 현대가에서 운영하고 있는 K리그 클래식 (1부리그) 구단이 두개에 내셔널리그 (실업리그) 팀이 하나입니다. 그리고 단순히 팀을 운영하기만 하는 정도가 아니라, 그 세 팀들. 전북, 울산, 울산 현대 미포조선은 모기업의 적극적인 투자로 계속 리그 상위권, 우승권의 순위를 유지하고 있지요. 심지어 오래된 국축 팬들 사이에 공공의 적으로 일컬어지는 정몽준의 심복 조중연씨 - 바쁜 정몽준씨 대신에 한때 거의 협회장 대행 수준의 권력을 휘두르며 파벌 만들고 전횡을 일삼은 - 도 잘못만 있는건 아닙니다. 엄청난 공로도 있지요. 바로 한국 축구인들의 숙원 사업이었던 유스 시스템을 정착시킨 것. 현재 1부리그인 K리그 클래식 팀들은 연고지의 몇몇 중학교와 고등학교를 유스팀으로 지정해서 전폭적인 지원을 하고 있습니다. 아무리 운동선수라도 고등학교는 나와야 하지 않느냐는 선수 학부모들의 의견과, 어려서부터 체계적인 훈련을 시키고 싶어하는 프로구단의 이해관계를 절묘하게 일치시킨 해법이죠. 이 시스템이 정착된 이후로도 협회는 매년 300억에 달하는 돈을 유소년에 투자하고 있는데, 이건 야구를 비롯한 다른 어떤 종목과도 비교를 불허하는 규모의 금액입니다. 3. 그런데 왜 이번 히딩크 일과 같은 문제가 생겼는가? (1) 크게 두가지 문제로 볼수 있습니다만, 일단은 돈입니다. 보통 히딩크 정도 되는 급의 감독은 혼자만 움직이지 않지요. 수석코치, 코치, 피지컬 훈련 담당, 비디오 분석관, (필수는 아니지만) 언론 담당관, 트레이너까지 소위 말하는 자기 사단을 데리고 다닙니다. 02년 월드컵을 봤던 분들은 아마 기억하실 겁니다. 수석코치 핌 비어벡과 피지컬 코치 레이몬드 베르헤이옌, 비디오 분석관 압신 고트비, 거기에 몇몇 다른 네덜란드인들의 이름들을요. 이럴 경우에, 아무리 한물 갔다고야 하지만 기본적으로 최소 수십억은 될 히딩크 연봉에 이동해 올 스태프들에게 들어갈 돈까지 생각하면 액수가 상당하죠. 솔직히 한국 축협이 가지고 있는 예산의 규모로는 부담이 엄창나게 클겁니다. 02년 월드컵 이전보다야 예산 규모도 커지고 사정도 많이 나아졌지만, 일본이나 중국에 비하면 1/2 정도의 수준이고 이건 중동의 산유국들이나 유럽의 축구 강국들과 비교해도 마찬가지입니다. 시장 자체의 규모가 다르다보니 쓸수 있는 돈도 다른거죠. 02년 월드컵 전에 히딩크 데려올때도 협회 예산으로는 감당이 안되서 정몽준씨가 쌈짓돈 수십억 풀었다는게 정설이기도 하고...사실 한번 더 그랬었는데 세번하긴 싫겠죠. ㅎㅎ 한국 대표팀에 히딩크 이후 그만한 이름값을 지닌 감독이 왜 4년뒤, 딱 월드컵을 대비하던 때의 딕 아드보카트 밖에 없었는가라는 의문에 대한 대답도 돈이면 설명이 될겁니다. 돈이 없지야 않지만, 클라스 있는 해외 감독들 연봉 맞춰주기엔 모자르다는거. 그게 한국 축구의 현실입니다만 이걸 언론에 얘기했다간 욕만 먹기 십상이겠죠. 그리고, 이쯤에서 히딩크의 최근 성적을 봅시다. 09년 : 러시아 대표팀 감독. 10년 남아공 월드컵 본선 진출 실패. 10~11년 : 터키 대표팀 감독. 유로 2012 본선 진출 실패. 유럽 최약체 중의 하나인 아제르바이잔에 충격패. 12~13년 : 러시아 프리미어 리그 FC 안지 감독. 리그 5위, 리그 3위 기록. 무관. 14~15년 : 네덜란드 대표팀 감독. 아이슬란드에 밀리고 패하며 유로 2016 조별 예선 3위 기록 중 경질. 네덜란드 유로 2016 본선 진출 최종 실패. 15~16년 : 무링요 경질 이후 첼시 임시 감독 취임. 무승부가 많았으나 강등권까지 떨어졌던 팀을 중위권으로 끌어올림. 이후 콩테에게 감독직 인계. 딱히 매력적으로는 볼 수 없는 캐리어죠. 네덜란드에서는 나이가 들면서 선수 기용의 유연성이나 경기 중간에 임기응변으로 전술을 변화시키는 역량이 떨어졌다. 즉 이제 한물 갔다...는 평가가 나왔었습니다. 뭐 그래도 아시아권 내에 히딩크보다 높은 클라스의 감독은 현 중국 국대 감독인 마르셀로 리피 제외하면 없을 겁니다만, 만약 제가 협회 관계자고 히딩크 데려올만한 예산이 있다고 가정했을 때, 저 같으면 이번 월드컵은 신태용으로 가고 결과 봐서 신태용과 재계약 하거나 다른 외국인 감독을 찾아보겠습니다. 마찬가지로, 협회도 아마 큰돈 들여가면서 히딩크 다시 데려올 마음은 없을겁니다. 몸값 확 낮추면 모를까... (2) 다른 한가지 문제는, 복잡하게 얽혀있는 축협의 내부 사정과 시스템을 들 수 있습니다. 바로 대표팀에 영향을 행사하고 싶어하는 사람들의 존재와 주류 비주류의 문제. 일단 신태용은 주류와는 거리가 먼 사랍입니다. 대구에서 고등학교와 대학교를 나왔고, 프로팀도 한때는 막강한 머니파워를 자랑했었지만 문선명씨 사망 이후 축구에서 아예 손을 떼버린 일화 출신. 리그 득점왕과 MVP를 모두 수상한 몇 안되는 선수중에 하나이지만, 플레이 스타일의 문제로 국대에 선발된 횟수가 적어 대중적인 인지도는 높지 않음. 한마디로, 이 사람 흔들어 보려는 세력이 축협 내부에 없을 수가 없습니다. 만만하잖아요? 히딩크 재단 역시 신태용의 위상이 높았다면 과연 지금처럼 처신할 수 있었을까 하는 궁금증도 듭니다. 탈락위기에 처했던 국대를, 내용이야 안좋았지만 일단 월드컵 본선에 진출시킨 감독이 황선홍이나 14월드컵 이전의 홍명보였다면? 아마 현재 히딩크 데려오자고 난리가 나있는 포탈들 댓글이 약간은 달랐을 것이고, 히딩크 재단도 이런 방식의 언플은 못했겠죠. 그리고 축협의 뿌리 깊은 병폐 - 자신의 영향력을 대표팀 선수 선발이나 운영에 행사하려는 인물들이 많다는 것. 대표적인 인물로 위에 언급한 조중연을 들수가 있는데 - 며칠 전에 축협 법인카드 막썼다가 기소됐더군요 - , 아마 예전 히딩크 만화에 나왔던 이 선수 이 선수 뽑아라...라고 히딩크에게 말했던 여러 사람들 중에 이 사람은 아마 100% 포함된다고 확신할 수 있습니다. 98년도에 차범근이 국대를 이끌고 프랑스에 월드컵 본선을 치르러 가 있을때, 네덜란드에 5-0 으로 대패하자, 대학 후배이기도 하지만 워낙에 자기 영향력이 안통하다보니 마침 희생양도 필요하겠다...사상 유례없는 월드컵 본선 도중의 감독 경질을 주도하기도 했던지라. 그래서, 그 이후로 차범근과 축협은 아예 척을 지게 되었고, 더해서 언론을 통해 시시때때로 서로를 비판하는 거의 철천지 원수급의 존재가 돼 버렸죠. 이 싸움이 어느 정도였냐하면. 차두리가 예전에 셀틱으로 이적할때 취업비자 발급을 위해 추천서가 필요했었는데. 그건 사실 차두리 정도 되면 자국 축구 협회장이나 그보다는 직위가 낮아도 적당한 고위 직급의 임원이 써주는게 일반적인 경우입니다만, 이걸 써주는 사람이 없었습니다. 당시 축협회장 조중연의 파워가 엿보이는 일이기도 하죠. 뭐, 그래서 차붐은 그 추천서를 베켄바우어 한테 부탁하고 받아내 버리긴 했습니다만...ㅋ (관련 기사 보실 분들은 http://sports.news.naver.com/general/news/read.nhn?oid=139&aid=0001964967) 여하튼, 며칠전에 타임라인에서 간단히 언급하기도 했습니다만 일단 신태용이 자기 자리를 스스로 내던지면 안된다는 이유가 이것이기도 합니다. 히딩크가 들어오면서 사임을 하든, 여론에 밀린 축협에 의해 그냥 짤리든, 아니면 성적이 부진해서 경질되든 그런 방식으로 가야지, 혹시라도 축협에 괘씸죄로 찍히게 되면 앞으로 한국 축구계에서 무슨 일을 당하게 될지 모르니까요. 천하의 차범근도 저 꼴을 당하는데, 비주류에다가 돌아갈 친정격이 될 프로구단도 없는 신태용이 지금 몹쓸 짓 당하고 있다고 자리 내던졌다가 협회에 찍히면 뭐... 결론을 내리자면, 사실 현재 국내에 젊은 감독으로는 신태용만한 사람이 드뭅니다. 수비진을 조직하는 데에 약점이 있다고 하지만, 공격전술 짜는 데에서는 국내 젊은 지도자들 중에서 최고라는 말도 있고요. 또, 어려운 시기에 아무도 가지 않으려는 힘든 자리 맡아서 내용이야 안좋았다고는 해도 일단 결과를 냈는데, 얼마 지켜보지도 않고 큰돈 들여가며 본선에서 결과가 나올지 아닐지 장담할 수 없는 사람을 예전에 성공했었으니까 다시 데려오자... 그건 좀 아니라고 봅니다. 신태용 감독이 비주류인데도 나름 홍명보 이후에 축협이 밀어주는 젊은감독인데에는 기본적인 실력 검증은 되었기 때문에 그런게 아닌가 싶습니다. 이러나 저러나 클럽감독으로서도 연령대별 감독으로서도 높은 성적을 찍어낸 능력은있는 감독이니까요. 수비가 약점이있었어도 공격에 기반한 경기력은 기본적으로 팬들을 만족시킬만했다구 생각하구요. 댓글쓰다가 생각하니 좀 웃긴게, 리누스 미헬스 감독이 히딩크의 98월드컵 그리고 그를 이어받은 레이카르트의 유로00 네덜란드를 회자하기를 진짜 보기좋고 공격적인 팀이기는했는데 아마 우승을 못한게 밸런스가 공격쪽에 치우쳐서 수비가 좀 무너졌던게 아닌가...라고 쓴걸 본적이있습니다. 무대가 다르기는 하지만 신태용 감독이 받는 평가랑 비슷한점이있죠 ㅋㅋㅋ
