 짜잔! 제목만 보고 뭔가 설렘설렘한 글을 예상하신 분들도 있으시겠지만, 이 글은 탄소발자국(Carbon Footprint)에 대한 내용입니다 :) 요즘 제 주력 분야가 정확히 이쪽은 아니라 최신 트렌드를 반영하고 있지도 않고 조금 다르다고 생각하시는 부분도 있을 수 있지만 그냥 이런 것도 있구나 하고 봐 주시면 감사하겠습니당! 탄소발자국은 2006년 영국에서 처음 만들어진 용어에요. 우선 정의를 살펴본다면 "개인 또는 단체 / 물품이 직접·간접적으로 발생시키는 온실 기체의 총량"을 말합니다. 탄소발자국을 알기 위해서는 먼저 전과정평가(LCA, Life Cycle Assessment) 라는 개념이 먼저 우선되어야 하는데요, 전과정평가는 제품의 원재료 생산, 제품 생산, 제품 사용, 폐기까지의 전과정에 걸친 제품의 환경적 영향을 평가하는 것 입니다. 이 부분에 대해서 가장 유명한 예시가 "천 기저귀와 종이 기저귀 중에 어떤 기저귀를 사용했을 때 환경적으로 영향이 적은가" 라는 부분이에요. 그냥 보면 당연히 종이 기저귀가 환경에 큰 피해를 끼칠것 같긴 하지만, 사용 빈도나 세척 등에 필요한 물, 세제 등에 따라서 천 기저귀도 종이기저귀 만큼 환경에 큰 영향을 끼칠 수 있다! 라는 부분이었죠. 물론 그런 부분을 고려한다고 해도 종이 기저귀가 더 환경에 큰 영향을 끼친다는 결론이 도출되긴 했지만요. 다시 돌아와서 - 실질적으로 통용되는 탄소 발자국의 개념은 "제품의 생산·유통·사용·폐기에 이르는 전 과정에서 발생하는 온실가스 배출량" 이에요. 그리고 제품마다 온실가스 배출량을 측정해서 '이 제품의 탄소 배출량은 00g이다!' 라고 인증하는 라벨링 제도가 존재하죠. 국내에도 탄소성적표지 라는 이름으로 라벨링 제도가 있어요. 음주가무를 즐기시는 홍차클러분들이라면 이미 알고 계실 수도 있겠지만. 참O슬 시리즈에 주류업계에서 유일하게 제품 별로 탄소성적표지 인증을 받았죠. 그래서 한때 업계 사람이라면 참O슬 마셔야지!!! 라고 하던 때도 있었... (아.. 흑역사 팡팡.. ) 지금 EU에서는 이런 탄소 발자국 뿐만아니라 물 발자국(Water Footprint)이나 자원 발자국(Material Footprint) 등을 모으고 국가 별로 다른 탄소발자국 인증 제도를 하나로 모아서 EU의 통일된 인증 제도로 만들기 위한 논의가 계속되고 있다고 해요. 자발적인 인증이긴 하지만 C마크 처럼 유럽에 수출하기 위해서는 필수적인 인증이 될 가능성도 존재하구요. 어쩌면 멀지 않은 미래에 국내에서도 탄소 발자국 인증 제품이 많아져서 제품 구매의 지표로 활용 가능성도 있지 않을까 생각하네요.
