1. 들어가며 오랜만입니다. 미루고 미루다가 이제야 카메라에 대한 이야기를 살짝 해볼까 합니다. 사실 카메라에 대한 이야기는 취미사진에 있어서 매우 민감할 수도 있는 주제라서 제가 쓰기 싫었던 까닭도 있습니다만, 요 근래 카메라 추천 질문도 많이 받고 해서, 특정 기종을 추천하기 보다는 카메라에 대한 제품 정보들이 의미하는 것이 무엇인지를 아주 간단하게 살펴볼까 싶습니다. 2. 카메라 구분 : DSLR/미러리스 요즘 흔히들 알고 있는 시스템카메라의 종류는 DSLR과 미러리스 정도의 구분일 것입니다. 막연하게 DSLR은 전문가용, 미러리스는 아마츄어용으로 알고 있는 경우도 많구요. 하지만 본질적으로 셔터를 눌러 사진을 찍는다는 점에서 DSLR과 미러리스의 차이는 없습니다. 기본적으로 렌즈로 빛을 받아서 이를 센서에서 감광한다는 원리 자체는 동일한 거죠. 다만 미러리스의 경우 DSLR에서 광학식 뷰파인더(눈으로 보는 부분) 구동을 위한 미러박스를 제거했기 때문에 더 가벼워진 대신 광학식 뷰파인더를 가질 수 없게 되었죠. 그래서 일반적으로 미러리스의 경우 후면 디스플레이를 보고 사진을 찍는 구조를 가지고 있습니다. 일부 기종에 따라서는 전자식 뷰파인더를 채용하여 눈으로 보는 부분에 작은 LCD를 집어넣어 눈을 대고 화면을 확인할 수 있게 만든 것들도 있습니다. 그래서 DSLR이냐 미러리스냐만을 가지고 어떤 카메라가 더 나은 성능을 가지고 있냐고 판단하기는 어렵습니다. 물론 두 카메라의 구조상 달라질 수 밖에 없는 부분들 - 예컨대 자동초점시스템(AF)의 차이라던가-이 있지만 그것이 이미지 퀄리티에 차이를 가져오는 것은 아닙니다. 즉 DSLR이냐 미러리스냐 하는 것은 카메라의 구조에 대한 차이일 뿐, 어떤 성능적인 차이를 가져오는 것은 아니란 것이죠. 다만 기존 DSLR 시스템이 구축해놓은 수많은 렌즈시스템 및 관련장비들 + 익숙한 시스템이라는 이점으로 인하여 DSLR이 프로페셔널 마켓에서 선호받긴 합니다. 상업사진용으로 쓰이는 풀프레임 판형의 기종들도 DSLR이 훨씬 다양하구요. 미러리스의 경우엔 A7시리즈 이외엔 풀프레임의 대안이 거의 없다시피 합니다. 그런 점에서는 DSLR이 앞선다고 할 수 있겠네요. 다만 A7도 워낙 잘나왔고, 점점 미러리스도 다양해지고 있고, 미러리스의 가장 강점인 휴대하기 편리하다는 점도 있어서 이 역시도 어떤 것이 더 나은 형식이라고 말씀드리기는 어려울 것 같습니다. 3. 이미지 센서 : 센서크기 판형을 의미합니다. 풀프레임, APS-C. 마이크로포서드 등으로 표시되며 괄호 안에 풀프레임 대비 몇배 더 작은지가 나타나 있는 경우가 많습니다. (1:1.5)라면 APS-C의 크롭판형을, (1:2)라면 마이크로포서드 판형을 의미하며 ( )안의 숫자를 "크롭팩터"라고 부릅니다. 이는 초점거리를 통한 환산화각을 계산하는 데 의미가 있는데, 이에 대해서는 지난번에 썼던 "판형에 대해 알아봅시다"를 참조해주시면 감사하겠습니다.( https://new.redtea.kr/?b=12&n=367 ) 4. 이미지 화소 디지털 카메라 초창기에는 화소=성능이라는 인식이 꽤 많았는데 1300만화소가 넘는 고화소가 일반화된 지금에 있어서는(1300만을 고화소로 보아야 하느냐에 대해서도 의문이 들 정도입니다), 이런 인식은 많이 없어진 것 같습니다. 화소는 이미지를 얼마나 크게 인화할 수 있느냐를 의미합니다. 즉 화소수가 클수록 더 큰 사이즈로 이미지를 출력할 수 있습니다. 총 화소수는 센서의 전체 픽셀을 나타내고 유효화소수는 총 화소수의 실제 촬영시 센서에 이미지화 되는 픽셀수를 말하며 보통 실제 해상도를 나타냅니다. 즉 실제적으로 의미있는 화소수는 유효화소수라고 할 수 있습니다. 경험적으로 대형인화를 할 일이 없다면, 굳이 고화소의 카메라가 필요한가 싶습니다만, 고화소의 카메라가 가지는 이점은 개인적인 경험상 '보정관용도'입니다. 아무래도 같은 사진이라면 화소가 높은 쪽이 정보량이 많아 극한의 보정값에도 화질이 열화되지 않고 잘 견디는 특성을 가지고 있습니다. 다만 고화소바디의 경우, 이미지 파일하나의 크기가 매우 크고, 고화소바디에 맞는 정보량을 줄 수 있는 잘 깎은 렌즈 - '고화소바디에 대응한다'고 표현하는 경우가 많습니다 -인 최신렌즈가 필요한 경우도 있으며, 이를 후보정하기 위한 컴퓨터의 성능도 요구되는 바, 자신의 용도에 맞는 화소의 카메라를 잘 고를 필요성이 있습니다. 추가적으로 고화소바디의 경우 사진의 일부를 잘라내도 쓸만한 이미지를 건질 수 있어, 크롭망원의 효과를 도모할 수도 있습니다만, 이를 금기시하는 분들도 있고 해서 이 부분 판단은 각자 알아서 해주시기 바랍니다^^ 5. 감도설정 얼마나 감도를 예민하게 설정할 수 있느냐 입니다. 높은 ISO를 사용하면 어두운 장소에서도 흔들림 없는 사진을 찍을 수 있습니다. ISO는 최대값 안에서 원하는 대로 바꿔가면서 찍을 수 있습니다. (ex: 플래시 없이 어두운 곳에서 사진을 찍을 경우 ISO를 높임) ISO를 높이면 흔들림은 잡을 수 있지만, 노이즈가 증가해서 사진이 거칠어 집니다 예전에는 ISO 1600만 되어도 고감도 성능이 참 좋다고 했는데 요샌 25600은 기본이고, 니콘의 D5같은 경우는 ISO 102400까지 지원하며 확장으로 328만까지도 지원하는 바, 어두운 상황에서 촬영이 예전보다는 많이 편해졌습니다. 다만 감도를 올릴 경우 앞서 살펴보았다시피 노이즈가 많아져서, 실제적으로 얼마만큼의 감도까지 내가 허용할 수 있는지, 카메라의 리뷰들을 통해 이를 확인할 필요성이 있습니다. 제가 쓰는 카메라같은 경우에는 꽤 오래된 모델이라 ISO 800도 노이즈가 부담스러운 경우가 종종 있습니다. 6. 촬영모드 PSAM모드의 지원 여부와 기타 카메라에 내장된 각종 촬영 효과들을 의미합니다. 7. 셔터 스피드 1/4000 ~ 30초 이런 식으로 표시되는데, 얼마만큼 빠르게 찍을 수 있는지를 의미합니다. 예컨대 밝은 대낮에 조리개값이 F1.4인 렌즈를 최대개방해서 아웃포커싱 상황을 촬영한다고 생각해봅시다. 이 경우에 적정노출로 찍기 위해서는 최대개방값인 F1.4에서 (감도는 최저감도 설정)1/8000초만큼 노출을 시켜야 하는데, 카메라가 1/8000초를 지원하지 못하고 1/4000초까지만 지원한다면 이 사진은 지나치게 길게 노출되서 사진이 밝게 나올것입니다. 노출 오버가 되는 것이죠. 이 경우에는 감도를 더 낮출 수 없기 때문에 카메라 자체의 조작으로 해결하기 위해서는 하는 수 없이 조리개를 더 조여줘야 합니다. 1/8000초를 지원했다면 F1.4로 찍을 수 있었을텐데 말이죠. 하지만1/4000초 정도면 찍을 수 있는 경우가 대부분이라, 특수한 상황을 상정해서 굳이 1/8000초라는 스펙을 고집할 필요는 없다고 생각합니다. 8. 연사성능 연사 모드에서 1초에 찍을 수 있는 최대 사진 매수입니다. 드라이브 모드로 부르기도 합니다. 초당 연사 장수가 높을수록 스포츠 경기 등 빠른 장면의 순간 포착에 유리합니다. 9. 초점영역 초점을 맞출 수 있는 영역의 개수입니다. 많을수록 빠르고 정확하게 초점을 잡습니다. 많은 초점영역은 아이들이나 동물들처럼 움직임을 따라가면서 초점을 잡아야 하는 촬영에 유리합니다. 필요에 따라 특정 초점영역만 선택해서 사진을 촬영 할수도 있습니다. 10. 이미지처리 엔진 디지털카메라의 센서가 외부의 빛에 노출되면 외부의 정보량을 데이터로 만드는데 이를 RAW파일 이라고 합니다. RAW파일에는 가공되지 않는, 입력장치로서의 카메라가 인식한 데이터파일입니다. 이를 카메라에 내장된 이미지처리엔진을 통하여 JPG파일로 변환하게 되는데, 이 엔진에 따라서 소위 말하는 "카메라 회사별 색감"이 나타나게 되는 것입니다. 만약 RAW촬영이 많다면, 이미지처리엔진은 크게 중요치 않을 수도 있으나, 이 글의 대상자가 RAW보다는 JPG촬영이 많을 초심자임을 고려해 볼 때, 카메라의 선택에서 꽤 중요한 요소가 될 수도 있다고 생각합니다. 따라서 카메라를 선택하기 전에 해당 모델로 찍은 사진이 JPG파일을 어떻게 처리하는지 리뷰나 작례등을 보고 확인해 볼 필요가 있습니다. 11. 손떨림방지 손떨림방지가 있으면, 조금 더 긴 셔터스피드에서도 살짝 흔들림을 감수하고 사진을 찍을 수 있게 해줍니다. 렌즈에서 지원하는 경우 뿐만 아니라 미지원렌즈의 경우에도 바디에 손떨림방지기능이 있으면 보정을 받을 수 있습니다. 요즘 나오는 바디들이 가지는 꽤 큰 강점이기도 합니다. 12. 그들의 카메라는 무엇이 다른가 비싼 고급기와 입문기의 차이는 무엇인지에 대해서 가끔 질문받는 경우가 있는데, 앞서 언급했다시피 렌즈를 통하여 받아들이는 광학정보를 센서에 감광시킨다는 작업에서 입문기나 보급형이나 동세대의 기종들이 유의미한 차이를 갖는 것은 아닙니다. 물론 판형에 따른 차이는 있겠지만, 비슷한 세대의 같은 회사의 카메라들은 대개 같은 센서를 사용하는 경우가 많거든요. 어떤 회사는 꽤 오래된 센서를 조금씩 개량만 해서 사용하는 경우도 있구요. 판형을 제외한다면, 고급형일수록, 외부에 조작할 수 있는 버튼이나 다이얼들이 많습니다. 일견 복잡해보이는 외관을 가지고 있는 것은, 그 기능들이 고급기종에서만 가능하다기 보다는, 보급형에서도 가능하지만, 이런저런 셋팅을 위해서 메뉴 버튼을 통해 하위 메뉴로 들어가 설정할 수 있는 부분들을 다 밖으로 꺼내놓았기 때문입니다. 즉 손가락을 셔터에만 올려놓은 상태에서 바로바로 셋팅을 바꿀 수 있게 만들어놓은 것이죠. 그 외에도 방진방적기능이라던가, 기타 촬영에 편의를 주는 많은 현가장치들이 더 비싼 카메라에는 달려있습니다. 즉 이미지퀄리티의 차이는 그다지 크지 않다는 거죠. 실제로 카메라의 센서 역시 생각보다는 크게 발전한 것도 아니기도 하구요. 물론 오래된 카메라들은 고감도에서 노이즈가 많다거나, 스마트폰과 연결이 안된다거나 하는 불편함은 있을 수 있지만요. 이처럼 상위 세그먼트의 카메라가 가지는 장점들으 어떻게 보면 별 차이 안나는 것처럼 보일 수 있는 있는 요소들이지만, 순간을 포착하는 작업이라는 점에서 누군가에게는 기민하게 카메라를 조작할 필요성이 있기 때문에, 혹은 특정 환경에 견뎌야 하기 때문에 꽤 중요한 기능일 수 있습니다. 다만 그 기능이 과연 나에게 필요한 것인가, 내가 그렇게까지 순간순간 대응할 필요성이 있는 사진들을 많이 찍는가에 대해서는 한번쯤 카메라 선택하기 전에 생각해 볼 필요성이 있겠죠. 13. 나가며 결국엔 카메라 기종의 선택은 각자의 취향과 용도에 따라 달라진다는 아주 원론적인 결론을 내릴 수 밖에 없습니다. 다만 카메라라는 장비가 보다보면 눈이 한도끝도없이 높아질 수 있는 분야라 어느정도에서 만족할 필요성도 있다고 생각합니다. 또한 사진을 찍는 건 카메라가 아니라 사진사가 찍는 것이기 때문에, 본인이 가진 장비에 불만족하기보다는, 어떻게 하면 내가 원하는 이미지를 찍을 수 있을지 고민해보는 것이 좀 더 생산적일 것 같다는 생각도 듭니다. 이렇게 말하는 저 역시도 여전히 새로운 장비들이 눈에 들어오는 건 어쩔 수 없는 것 같긴 하지만, 조금 오래되어도, 조금 성능이 떨어지는 것 처럼 보여도, 카메라는 결국 사진사의 셔터누름에 정직하게 응답해주더라구요. 다 써놓고 보니 카메라 선택에 대해서는 별 도움이 안되는 글이었던 것 같네요. 그래도 다들 즐거운 사진생활 하시길 바랍니다.
