 작년 초부터 얼라이벌이라는 영화를 매우 기다렸습니다. 테드 창의 소설을 원작, 그리고 드니빌뇌브가 감독을 맡았기에 더욱 기대했었죠. 하지만 이렇게까지 실망스러운 영화가 나올 줄 몰랐습니다. 너무나 아쉬웠던 점들 몇 가지를 이야기해보고 싶습니다. 1. 3천년 후에 도움을 받기 위해 지구에 온 외계인들. 12개의 외계 비행 물체가 미국, 중국, 러시아 등 세계 각지의 상공에 등장합니다. 인간들은 두려워합니다. 그들이 지구에 온 이유가 무엇인지 궁금해하죠. 그러자 우리의 주인공 루이스가 그들의 언어를 습득하고 소통을 합니다. 하지만 지구는 미지의 존재 때문에 난리가 나죠. 심지어 "Offer weapon" 이라는 말을 통해 지구인들이 분열되고 혼란에 빠지게 만듭니다. 이에 중국은 쉘을 공격하는 움직임까지 보여주게 됩니다. 근데 이들의 목적은 3천 년 후에 도움을 받기 위해 온 겁니다. 그런데 왜 이렇게 불친절하게 온 건지 모르겠습니다. 전 세계를 혼란에 빠뜨리고, 전쟁 위기까지 퍼트리면서 올 이유가 뭔가요? 3천 년 후의 미래를 볼 줄 아는 생명체가 이렇게까지 불필요한 소란을 피우며 올 필요가 있는지 의아합니다. 또한 인간들이 설치한 폭발물에 의해 '에봇' 이 죽음의 과정에 있게 됩니다. 3천 년 후의 미래는 볼 수 있는 외계인이 바로 코앞에 일어날 폭발을 모르고 죽어간다? 혹여, 그 폭발을 몰랐다 치더라도 루이스 일행은 안전하게 살도록 조치를 취하는 장면은 어떻게 되는 건가요? 이건 미래를 보는 외계인이 아니라 그냥 '영구와 맹구' 아닐까 싶습니다. 2. 루이스가 무기를 얻게 된 시점은 언제인가? 외계인들의 무기는 '미래를 볼 수 있는 능력'입니다. 그런데 영화는 시작하자마자 '암'으로 사망한 루이스의 딸을 보여주죠. 마치 플래시백처럼 보여주기 때문에 과거에 그러한 아픔이 있는 사람으로 보입니다. 외계인을 처음 마주치고, 소통하는 동안에도 계속해서 플래시백이 계속됩니다. 마치 관객에게는 '과거에 새로운 생명과 소통하는 느낌이 외계인과의 소통에 영향' 을 주는 것처럼 보입니다. 미지의 생명체인 외계인과, 새로운 생명인 딸과 소통하는 장면이 맞닿는 것처럼 보여주죠. 근데 루이스는 갑자기 자신에게 보이는 이 아이가 누구냐고 외계인에게 묻자, 우리의 능력을 네가 습득 한 것이라고 합니다. 아니 그럼 이 능력이 도대체 어느 시점에 얻게 되는 건가요? 영화는 시작하자마자 플래시 백 처럼 보여주었는데, 알고보니 플래시 포워드 였던거죠. 반전잼! 분명 외계인의 언어를 해석하고 소통하는 과정에서 능력을 얻은 것인데, 그렇다면 영화 시작하자마자 펼쳐진 플래시포워드는 누구의 시점인가요? 분명 전지적 시점일 것입니다. 그런데 영화는 마치 루이스의 시점으로 회상을 하는 것 처럼 연출을 해줍니다. 그냥 이런 연출은 낚시 그 이상이 되지 않는다는 생각이 듭니다. 3. 줏대 없는 샹 장군 "Offer weapon"이라는 대답을 얻은 이후 각국은 분열을 일으킵니다. 루이스는 끊임없는 고민 끝에 12개의 국가들이 협력해야 한다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 하지만 우리의 트롤러 중국. '샹 장군' 은 동맹국들과 셸을 공격할 준비를 하게 됩니다. 중국의 단독적인 행동이 아니라 동맹국들의 공격입니다. 그런데도 불구하고 "전쟁에 승자는 없다. 다만 과부만이 있을 뿐이다" 라는 말 한마디 듣고 이 모든 공격을 멈추게 된다? 이거 너무 샹 장군이 줏대 없는 것 아닌가 싶습니다. 심사숙고해서 여론을 반영해 중국을 비롯한 동맹국들의 움직임인데 이렇게 쉽게 공격을 명령하고 멈춘다니? 이건 그냥 미국에서 중국을 미개한 나라 취급하는 시선으로 대충 설정했다는 느낌이 들 수밖에 없습니다. 이 영화가 운명론적 세계관을 바탕으로해서 미래의 일은 이미 정해져 개인이 어떻게 할 수 있는 것은 없다라는게 맞나요? 저는 그래서 왜 그걸 순순히 받아들이는지 여주인공의 그 과정이 쉽사리 공감이 안되었어요. 단순히 외계인 둘 중 하나가 미래를 아는데도 불구하고 죽음을 받아들이는 것을 보여주는 것만으로는 부족해보였달까요. 주인공의 감정에 내가 설득당하지않으니 영화가 끝나서도 찝찝함이 더 크게 남았고 3번에 적으신 단점도 더 크게 다가오더군요.
