Killing Me Softly with His Song의 오리지널 버젼은 Lori Liberman이 불렀는데, 그녀에 의하면 이 곡의 가사는 그녀가 Don McLean의 Empty Chairs라는 곡을 듣고는 쓴 시를 바탕으로 해서 쓰여진 것이라고 합니다. 이 후 Roberta Flack이 불러준 곡이 크게 인기를 얻었습니다. 1945년 생인 Don McLean은 국내에서 고흐에 대한 노래인 Vincent도 크게 인기를 얻었는데, 그의 경력에 있어서 최고의 히트곡이며 그가 만든 곡중에서 최고의 곡으로 꼽는건 American Pie입니다. 그는 이 곡에 대해서, 버디 홀리의 죽음과 관련된 곡이라는 것 이외에 나머지는 감상자의 몫이라며 이 곡의 내용에 대해서 언급하는것을 극히 자제를 했지만, 많은 사람들이 이 곡의 내용이 무엇인가에 대해서 다양한 해석을 내놓은 작품이기도 합니다만, 대체적으로 버디 홀리의 죽음과 더불어 50년대 미국의 순수함이 죽고 이후 60년대의 각종 카운터 컬쳐에 대한 이야기라는 것입니다. 그는 이 곡에 대해서, 당시 약간의 우울증과 음반사와 한장의 음반을 더 만들기로 계약이 된 상태에서 음반을 만들 자신이 없었는데, 갑자기 떠오른 영감으로 금방 이 곡을 만들었고, 덕분에 이후의 삶이 달라진 것에 대해서 이야기를 합니다. 그러면서 자신이 만든 최고의 곡이 이 곡인데, 운좋게 이 곡이 가장 인기가 있어서 자신이 만든 최고의 곡을 가장 많이 부를 기회를 가진걸 다행으로 생각한다고 하더군요. 곡이 길어서 8분이 훌쩍 넘어가다보니, 당시 싱글로 발매를 했는데, 한면에 실을수가 없어서 1부와 2부로 나누어서 양면에 실어야 했습니다. 덕분에 방송국에서는 싱글보다는 앨범으로 이 곡을 방송에서 틀었다고 하고요. 가사도 길고 가사의 각 부분들마다 다양한 레퍼런스가 있는데, 대강 알려진 것들과 제가 생각한것들 약간을 섞어서 정리를 해 봤습니다. 2차대전이 끝나면서 도덕적 승리감과 더불어, 1950년대는 미국에서 부가 일반대중에 퍼져나가던 시기로 풍요와 평화로운 시기로 기억이 되고 있었고, 격동기인 60년대 등장하는 각종 카운터컬쳐와는 굉장히 다른 문화적 결을 유지하고 있던 시기입니다. 곡의 도입부인 1절은 Don Mclean이 곡을 쓸 당시 그에게 가장 아름다운 시절이었으며, 가장 커다란 충격을 안겨준 사건이 일어났던 1950년대로부터 시작을 하면서 이후 곡이 전개되면서 나올 내용의 밑바탕을 다지는 내용으로 이루어져 있습니다. Helter skelter in a summer swelter The birds flew off with a fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast Helter skelter는 비틀즈의 화이트 음반에 실린 곡으로, 비틀즈의 곡중에서 가장 시끄러우면서도 사운드가 거칠고 더러운 곡입니다. 특히 이곡은 60년대 말 연쇄살인마로 유명한 찰리 맨슨과 관련이 깊은데, 비틀즈의 열렬한 팬이었던 찰리 맨슨은 그를 따르는 집단에게 헬터 스켈터라고 하는것이 계시록에 나오는것과 같은 마지막 전쟁이라는 이야기를 하면서, 69년 살인을 하는데, 당시 살해된 인물중에는 로만 폴란스키의 임신한 아내였던 샤론 테이트등도 포함되어 있었어요. summer swelter는 아마도 1967년 소위 summer of love라고 불리운 샌프란시스코의 Haight-Ashbury에 히피들이 몰려들었던 것을 가리키거나 혹은 long hot summer of 1967이라고 불리우는 것을 가리킬 수도 있는데, 시기상으로 2년정도의 차이가 나지만 60년대 말 히피문화의 여러 극단을 보여주는 사건을 가리킵니다. The birds란 그룹 The Byrds를 가리키는데, 이들은 밥 딜런과 더불어 포크록을 정착시킨 그룹으로 꼽힙니다. 첫 앨범의 타이틀곡인 Mr. Tamberineman은 밥 딜런의 곡을 포크록으로 커버한 곡이었고요. fallout shelter란 재활센터를 가리키는 말로 The Byrds의 멤버중 한명이 마리화나 소지 혐의로 체포되고, 나중에 재활센터에서 보내졌습니다. 재미있는건 밥 딜런의 Mr. Tamberineman이 실린 Bringing It All Back Home의 음반 쟈켓을 보면 fallout shelter라는 표지판이 보입니다. Eight miles high도 역시 The Byrds가 1966년 발표한 곡으로 싸이키델릭의 원조로 꼽히는 음악으로 그들은 부인합니다만 대체적으로 마약에 대한 노래로 이야기 됩니다. It landed foul on the grass The players tried for a forward pass With the jester on the sidelines in a cast 첫줄은 야구의 은유로 foul on the grass라는건 공이 파울이 되었다는건데요. 그러니까 당시 사회변혁을 위한 노력들이 정부등에 의해서여기서 the players들이란 60년대 시위를 주도했던 혹은 사회 변혁을 꿈꾸던 사람들을 가리키는 표현입니다. 그리고 이 줄에서는 미식축구의 메타포로 그들은 앞으로 나아가려고 했다는 표현을 사용하고요. 그리고 the jester는 밥 딜런을 가리킵니다. 그리고 캐스트에서 그가 사이드라인으로 섰다는건 그의 음악이 바뀐걸 가리킵니다. 2절에서 이야기를 했는데, 밥 딜런은 1966는 모터사이클 사고로 뉴욕주의 우드스탁에 들어가서 9개월을 치료를 하고 재활하는데 시간을 보냅니다. 그렇게 시간을 보내고난 후 다시 활동을 개시한 그의 음악은 달라졌는데, 특히가 가사에 있어서 이전에 보여주었던 사회비판적인 내용은 감소하고, 재활하면서 읽었던 성경을 레퍼런스로 한 곡이 증가하는등 가사가 많이 바뀌었고, 그의 음악은 당시 시위를 하던 사람들에게는 적당한 음악이 아닌음악이 되어버렸다는것입니다. Now the half-time air was sweet perfume While sergeants played a marching tune We all got up to dance Oh, but we never got the chance 60년대 후반 Don McLean은 sweet perfume이 공기 혹은 대중매체의 절반이라고 했는데, sweet perfume이란 당시 시위대를 비롯해서 활동가들, 히피등 이상주의자들을 가리킵니다. 그가 향수라고 칭한건 아마도 본질이 바뀐것은 아니라는 생각, 그래서 그 운동이 곧 사그라 들 것이라는 생각에 그렇게 했을지도 모릅니다. 다음 줄에 나오는 sergants는 비틀즈입니다. 비틀즈가 투어를 포기하고 스튜디오 음반 제작에만 몰두하면서 낸 첫 음반이 그들이 만든 음반중에서 가장 위대한 음반으로 꼽히는 Sgt. Peppe's Lonely Hearts Club Band였는데, 이 음반 쟈켓을 보면 비틀즈는 마치 마칭 밴드처럼 옷을입고 앨번 사진을 찍은 것이 있어요. 그 다음부분은, 히피문화와 이상주의 그리고 대중문화와 더불어 모두들 새로운 희망으로 춤을 추고 즐거워 했지만, 그 이상은 결국 실현되지 못했다는걸 가리킵니다. Don McLean에게는 마치 악마가 모습을 드러낸것과 같이 느끼는 상황에 대한 이야기들입니다. Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space With no time left to start again all in one place란 우드스탁 페스티발을 가리키는 것입니다. 1969년은 인간의 달 착륙이 있었고요. 1960년대 어윈 알렌의 티비 시리즈 Lost in Space가 있었는데, 이것과 더불어 lost in space란 마약과 관련된 이야기이기도 합니다. 마약에 취한 상태를 당시 space out이라고 표현을 하기도 했는데, Don McLean에게 60년대란 마약에 취해서 잃어버린 세대였고, 새로 시작하기에는 이제 시간이 남아있지 않았다고 생각을 한 듯 합니다.So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick 'Cause fire is the devil's only friend 이 부분은 nursery rhyme중에서 가져온 것인데, 롤링 스톤즈의 노래중에는 Jumpin' Jack Flash라는 곡이 있습니다. 다른 한편으로는 Jack Flash는 헤로인을 가리키는 용어인데, Jack Flash sat on a candle stick이란 헤로인을 준비하는 과정을 설명하는 표현이기도 합니다. Oh and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in Hell Could break that Satan's spell 이 부분은 1969년 12월에 있었던 롤링 스톤즈의 악명높은 Altamont Speedway공연을 가리킵니다. 당시 롤링 스톤즈가 Sympathy for Devil (satan's spell)을 부르고 있는 동안, 스테이지 근처에서 경비를 담당하고 있었던 'Hell's Angel' (angel born in hell)이 Meredith Hunter라는 관객을 폭행하고 칼로 찔러서 살해한 일이 있었습니다. I met a girl who sang the blues And I asked her for some happy news But she just smiled and turned away 블루스를 부르는 소녀란 재니스 조플린을 가리키는 것입니다. 1970년 헤로인 과다복용으로 사망을 했고, 몇 달 전에 지미 핸드릭스와 그리고 몇 달 후에는 짐 모리슨 역시 사망을 했습니다. 그가 그녀에게 'happy news'라고 한것은 아마도 1절에서 maybe they'd be happy for a while라고 한 것을 다시 연상시켜줍니다.I went down to the sacred store Where I'd heard the music years before But the man there said the music wouldn't play Don McLean에게 the sacred store란 레코드가게를 가르킵니다. 그가 예전에 음악을 듣곤 했던 곳으로, 50년대 순수했던 음악을 듣던 곳입니다. 그가 레코드 가게에 가서 음악을 들으려고 했을때, 이제는 상황이 바뀌어서 더 이상 자신이 듣고 싶은 음악은 플레이가 되지 않습니다. 60년대 음악이후 50년대 음악은 더 이상 사람들이 찾지 않는 음악일뿐 아니라, 50년대 레코드 가게에서는 음악을 들어보고 구입을 할 수 있었지만, 이제는 더 이상 그것도 할 수 없는 상황인거죠. 그리고 매체도 달라져서, 버디 홀리의 싱글들은 소위 SP라고 불리우는 78 rpm의 음반으로 발매가 되었지만, 70년대에는 이제 33 1/3 rpm 및 45 rpm이 음반시장을 지배를 하고 있었습니다. 그에게는 더 이상 돌아갈 곳이 없는 것입니다.And in the streets the children screamed The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed But not a word was spoken The church bells all were broken 거리에서 아이들이 지르는 비명이란, 아마도 60년대 특히나 60년대 말 시위대와 그들에게 행해진 폭력을 상징하는 것입니다. 아마도 켄트 스테이트 대학에서 정부군의 총격으로 사망한 Jeffrey Miller를 앞에 두고 울부짓고있는 Mary Ann Vecchio의 모습이 그들의 모습을 가장 잘 보여주는 상징적인 사진이 아닐까 합니다. 그리고 이제 한 시대가 끝나가고 있다는것도. 그리고 60년대가 끝나가는 시점에서 종교는 더 이상 50년대의 종교와 동일하지 않습니다. 그래서 교회의 종은 부셔졌고, 1965년 10월 22일자 타임지에 'Is God Dead'라는 기사는 60년대 정서중에 하나로 자리잡았고, 카톨릭 신도였던 Don McLean에게 이런 상황은 다시 과거에 대한 향수를 불러 일으키는 일이기도 합니다.And the three men I admire most The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died And they were singing 그는 여전히 신을 믿지만, 이제 그 신은 떠나갔습니다. 60년대는 그에게 실패한 세대고, 이제 더이상 시간도 남아있지 않은(with no time left to start again) 상태입니다. 나머지는 다음 세대의 몫이겠죠.
