 누가 봐도 폼 나는 CIA 현장 요원 브래들리 파인. 정장을 빼입은 이 남자의 귓가에는 항상 따라다니는 목소리가 있습니다. 적들이 어디서 얼마나 나타나는지, 탈출구는 어디인지 제깍제깍 알려주는 목소리의 주인공은 파인과 한 팀을 이루고 있는 내근 요원 수잔 쿠퍼입니다. 능력 있고, 매력 있고, 다정다감한 파인에게 수잔은 속으로 호감을 품고 있습니다. 그러나 적의 집에 무리하게 투입한 파인은 적에게 발각되고, 수잔은 실시간으로 그가 죽는 현장을 보게 됩니다. 기존의 현장 요원들이 죄다 노출된 상황, 복수심을 불태우던 수잔은 새로운 요원 자리를 꿰차게 됩니다. 그러나 수잔에게 발급된 건 스파이라기에는 모양 빠지는 아줌마 신분증과 지저분해 보이는 아이템뿐입니다. 임무 수행하기도 바빠죽겠는 판에 허풍쟁이 요원 포드가 불쑥불쑥 튀어나오는 탓에 수잔은 바쁘기 그지 없습니다. 기본적으로 이 영화는 기존 스파이 영화들의 클리셰들을 따와서 비틀고 있는 패러디 영화입니다. 웃기는 걸 최우선으로 삼고 있기 때문에 상황이 그렇게 철두철미하게 돌아가지는 않지요. 보다보면 플롯들의 황당한 구석들이 여기저기서 튀어나옵니다만 딱히 그걸 꼬집으며 볼 필요는 없습니다. 이 영화는 캐릭터 중심으로 돌아가는 이야기니까요. 가장 눈에 먼저 들어오는 건 수잔의 동료 요원들입니다. 수잔의 첫번째 동료인 파인은 007의 전형성을 짜집기 한 캐릭터에요. 연미복을 차려입고, 바쁜 작전 와중에도 여자에게 농을 치며, 젠틀함을 잃지 않죠.(이름부터가 Fine입니다) 동료 아닌 동료 같은 포드 역시도 스파이 영화 특유의 허세를 과장시켜 놓은 캐릭터입니다. 온갖 역경을 이겨내며 불가능한 임무들을 성사시키는 비현실성과 남성다움을 캐릭터 자신의 입으로 떠벌리며 셀프 디스를 하게 만드는 거죠. 마지막 동료인 알도 역시도 007의 껄떡쇠 기질을 비꼬는 캐릭터입니다. 007에 내재된 남성 중심의 섹슈얼한 판타지를 임무 수행 중에도 오로지 여자, 그리고 섹스밖에 생각 안하는 변태 캐릭터로 바꿔놓고 놀리는 겁니다. 중요한 건, 이 요소들을 단순히 스파이 영화 바깥에 서있는 사람의 시선이 아니라 스파이 영화의 최면에 걸리지 않는 “여자”들의 시선으로 까발리고 있다는 겁니다. 감독은 주인공인 수잔 쿠퍼의 눈을 통해 이 요원들을 바라보고 경험하게 만들면서 놀립니다. 야 너네 스파이 영화들이 여자들 눈으로 볼 때는 얼마나 우스꽝스러운지 아니? 너네들은 무슨 네가 무슨 섹시가이인줄 알지만 자뻑에 뻥에 성희롱하는 게 볼만하구나! 단순히 주인공이 여자라서 이 영화가 여성의 시선을 띄고 있는 건 아닙니다. 조금만 살펴보면 이 영화에서 이야기를 주도하고 활약하는 건 모두 여성들이라는 걸 알 수 있습니다. 주인공인 수잔 쿠퍼, 수잔의 친구인 낸시, 수잔의 직장 상사이자 수잔의 세계 속 최고 권력자인 일레인, 그리고 핵무기 거래 사건의 중심인 보야노프까지 이 영화는 여자들이 서로 부딪히고 핵심인 세계를 그리고 있습니다. 이 또한 007 영화의 안티테제입니다. 여자는 미인계로 적을 교란시키거나 주인공의 보조요원 아니면 잠자리 상대로 역할이 고정되어있는 007 영화 그리고 많은 액션 영화의 남성중심적 세계관을 부정하고 있지요. 이런 점을 본다면 이 영화에서 핵심이 되는 것은 스파이 물의 패러디라는 것보다도, 오히려 남성 중심의 가치관을 거부하는 여성성이라 할 수 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 멜리사 맥카시가 분한 수잔 쿠퍼의 웃음 코드 역시도 단순히 못난이 개그라고 할 수 없습니다. 뚱뚱하고, 이쁘지 않은 여자가 액션 영화에서 활개치고 다니는 것은 의외성을 넘어서 정치적으로 중요한 메시지를 담고 있는 거죠. 꼭 이뻐야 하느냐, 라고 말입니다. 진보적이고, 남성과 대등한 여성을 표현할 때 사람들은 관습적으로 묘사하고 기대하는 것이 있습니다. 일도 잘 하고 이쁘고 자신감 넘치는 일종의 알파걸 말이죠. 그렇다면 여기서 생각해 볼 것이 있습니다. 남성과 대등한 여성을 그리는 데 그 주인공이 이쁘거나 매력적일 필요가 꼭 있나요? 사랑스러우려면, 멋있으려면 세상의 평균적 기대를 웃도는 외모가 필수적인 조건일까요? 여성은 남성과 동등하다라는 메시지를 표현하기 위해 미모를 설정해놓는 것은 외모중심적인 남성의 편파적 기준에 여성이 스스로를 맞춰 끼우는 것이 아니냐 하는 것이죠. 스파이에서 웃음을 터트리는 포인트들은 다른 영화 속 뚱땡이에 대한 묘사와 같지 않습니다. 이 영화 속에서 우리가 웃는 이유는 어떤 여자가 안 예쁘고, 뚱뚱해서, 그런데 설치기까지 해서가 아니에요. 어떤 여자가 안 예쁘고, 뚱뚱하다고 해서 뭐만 하면 설친다고 차별하는 현실 자체를 풍자하는게 웃긴 거죠. 수잔 쿠퍼는 뚱뚱하니까 바보 같을 거야, 잘 할 수 없을 거야, 멋질 리가 없어 라고 미리 단정짓는 사람들과 이를 당연시하는 현실 자체를 우스꽝스럽게 표현합니다. 같은 손님이어도 수잔을 손님 취급해주지도 않는 바텐더나, 기껏 스파이가 됐지만 치질약이니 무좀약이니 하는 아이템만 골라서 주는 남자 요원이나, 지적이고 부유한 여자 역할 대신 얘엄마, 평생 솔로 같은 신분만 부여받는 상황을 통해서요. 내근 요원으로 일하고 있는 수잔 쿠퍼의 실체가 사실은 현장 작전을 소화할만큼 충분하고도 남는다는 것이 과거 훈련 영상을 통해 드러날 때는 얼마나 놀라운가요. 이는 단순히 웃기기 위한 반전이 아닙니다. 오히려 누군가의 가능성을 뚱뚱한 여성이라는 특성 때문에 그냥 지나쳐 가는 현실을 이야기하는 것이죠. 극 속에서 수잔은 자기비하를 하지도, 차별하는 현실을 당연히 여기지도 않습니다. 수잔은 절대로 “뚱뚱한 내가 죄지” 같은 소리를 하며 기죽지 않아요. 영화 속에서 단 한번도 뚱뚱하고 안 이쁜 여자라고 자신을 향해 쏟아지는 차별을 감내하지도 않습니다. 씁쓸한 현실에 맞닥트릴 때마다 수잔은 세상 잘 돌아가네, 기 한번 잘 살려주시네 하며 투덜거리고 항의할 줄 압니다. 수잔은 푸념하는 데서 그치지 않고 편견 덩어리인 세상을 향해 거칠게 퍼붓습니다. 그래, 나 뚱뚱한 여자인데 그렇다고 나한테 이렇게 해도 되냐 이 빌어처먹을 세상아!! 그렇다고 오해해선 곤란합니다. 스트레스에 시달린 여성이 분노로 인해 본래의 자신을 잃어버린 건 아니에요. 훈련 영상에서 봤듯이 수잔 쿠퍼는 원래 격정적이고 한 성격 하는 면이 있던 사람이란 말이죠. 딱히 착하지도, 순종적이지도, 얌전하지도 않은 여자한테 너 갑자기 왜 그래? 하고 되물어서는 안됩니다. 그 반대로 세상이 요구하는 차별적 조건에 수잔은 자신을 끼워맞추고 있었던 거니까요. 마치 도시락에 “꿈 깨” 라는 메시지를 넣곤 했던 수잔의 어머니처럼 우리들도 이를 당연시 여기고 있었던 거죠. 스파이로서의 정체성을 깨달아가며 수잔은 더 매섭게 편견에 맞서기 시작합니다. 이 편견을 조장하는 축은 영화 속의 남성들입니다. 스파이 영화의 클리셰였던 남자 캐릭터들은 남녀평등에 대한 블랙코메디로 작동합니다. 포드는 멘스플레인의 화신입니다. 여자가 내가 하는 일을 어떻게 하지? 내가 이렇게 저렇게 위대한 일들을 해치워왔는데 그걸 너가 감히 어떻게? 라고 무능력한 여성성에 대한 편견을 허풍 속에 깔고 가는 마초 캐릭터에요. 알도는 여자를 단지 남자의 성욕 대상으로만 바라보고 이를 낭만이라 착각하는 남성들을 풍자하는 게 확연히 드러납니다. 무엇보다도 가장 눈여겨 봐야 할 캐릭터는 바로 파인입니다. 가시적으로 수잔을 해코지하거나 무시하진 않지만, 좋은 남자라는 가면을 쓰고 가장 교묘하게 여성을 남성에 종속시키고 있기 때문이죠. 현장의 능력이 절대 떨어지지 않는 수잔을 내근 요원으로 앉혀놓았던 건 파인입니다. 임무 도중 수잔이 주는 정보에 감사 대신 칭찬을 하며 은근슬쩍 아랫사람을 대하듯 귀여워하거나 이뻐하는 태도가 파인에게서 엿보이죠. 자상하고 괜찮은 사람이지만 동시에 수잔이 자신을 과소평가하고 로맨스에 매달리게 하는 가장 일상적인 함정이라고 할 수 있습니다. 냉정하게 보면 수잔은 파인을 내내 돕지만 파인이 수잔을 돕는 장면은 거의 없다는 걸 알 수 있습니다. (카렌 워커에게서 수잔을 구해줬다는 고백도 크게 와닿지가 않죠) 후에 가면 수잔은 거의 탈바꿈 하는 수준으로 남자들에게 강력하게 맞부딪힙니다. 보야노프의 부하는 거친 말로 울리고, 민폐를 끼치는 와중에도 자신을 향해 욕하는 인부들에게 너희도 못생겼다며 되받아칩니다. 수잔은 남자에게 지지 않는 여자, 그리고 남자도 충분히 이겨먹는 여자가 되는 겁니다. 한편 스파이는 뚱뚱한 여자가 부딪혀야 할 장애물은 다름 아닌 같은 여자들이라는 것 역시도 이야기합니다. 프로타고니스트인 수잔은 이쁘고 인기 많은 안타고니스트 여성들과 대결합니다. 이들은 CIA에 적대하는 포지션에서 수잔과 부딪히지만 사실 그 자체로 이쁘고 인기많은 여자들을 뚱뚱하고 안 이쁜 여자가 극복하는 과정이기도 해요. 수잔을 이들을 때려눕히고 말빨로 눌러버립니다. 뚱뚱한 여자가 이쁘고 날씬하고 똑똑한 여자들에게 승리하는 우화인 셈입니다. 이 중에서도 가장 주적인 보야노프의 헐렁함은 외모중심주의를 충분히 극복할 수 있다는 정치적 메시지의 가장 큰 상징입니다. 이쁘고 돈도 많고 카리스마가 가득하지만, 사실 얼빵하고 뭐 하나 제대로 하는 게 없는 여성을 우리가 노력이나 다른 재능으로 못 뛰어넘을리가 없잖아!! 라는 거죠. 우리가 추구해야 할 건 저런 외모도 돈도 아니고 겉으로 보여지는 어떤 계급적 구조의 권리는 더더욱 아니라는 것, 자부심을 능력과 노력으로 쟁취한다면 꿀릴 거 하나 없다며 바람직한 여성상을 제시하고 있다 볼 수 있습니다. 이 영화의 엔딩은 이 모든 과정을 거쳐 수잔이 독립적이고 능동적인 여성으로 거듭나는 상징들이 모두 모여있습니다. 그렇게나 육체만 흝어보던 알도에게서 수잔은 스파이로서의 능력을 인정받는 말을 듣게 됩니다. 자신이 짝사랑하던 파인을 구해내지만, 수잔은 파인의 데이트신청을 받아들이는 대신 낸시와 축하파티를 하는 선택을 합니다. 여자는 연애가 전부고 멋진 남자를 만나는데만 신경을 쓴다 - 는 함정을 훌쩍 뛰어넘죠. 그렇기 때문에 수잔의 활극은 연애 없이도 그 자체로 충분히 뛰어나고 멋진 이야기로 남습니다. 꼭 연애를 안하더라도 여자들끼리도 얼마든지 멋진 우정과 연대를 보여줄 수 있다는 것 역시 보여주면서요. 체포된 보야노프를 향해 수잔은 “내가 부러웠지?” 라며 여자로서의 유대감을 서로 나눕니다. 보야노프는 단순히 적이 아니라 아들의 역할을 대신해야 했던, 남성중심의 세계에서 명예남성으로 길들여질 수 밖에 없던 또 다른 피해자라는 걸 수잔은 알고 있으니까요. 낑낑거리며 일어난 아침 수잔은 침대 옆에 발가벗고 있는 포드를 발견하고 소리를 지릅니다. 그리고 포드는 자기도 좋아해놓고 뭘 그러냐며 천연덕스럽게 수잔을 안으려고 하죠. 내내 여자를 무시하던 마초가이가, 뚱뚱하고 안 이쁜 여자와 맺어진 겁니다. 수잔은 단순히 능력있는 여성일뿐만 아니라 마초가이도 굴복할 정도의 여성성과 매력이 있음을 증명하며 영화는 끝이 납니다. 스파이 말고도 스파이 장르 공식을 이용한 패러디물은 많습니다. 유머의 성공률로 보자면 이 영화는 대단한 코메디 영화라고 하긴 어렵겠죠. 그러나 코메디의 지향점에서 이 영화는 적지 않은 무게가 있습니다. 뚱뚱하다고 수많은 영화들이 생각없이 놀려댈 때, 스파이는 참지 않고 받아치는 의로움과, 오히려 선빵을 날릴 줄 아는 통쾌함이 있습니다. 뚱뚱한 여자가 살을 빼지 않고, 짝사랑하던 남자에게 냅다 안기지 않고, 친구와 적 모두 여자끼리 뭉치며 의리를 자랑하는 영화는 흔치 않습니다. 불쾌하지도, 멍청하지도 않으면서 이렇게 시원하게 웃길 줄 아는 영화를 다른 코메디 영화와 007 시리즈가 조금 본받는 게 필요하지 않을까요? @ 사실 멜리사 맥카시는 얼굴은 보편적인 미인에 가깝습니다. @ 개콘 작가들이 제발 좀 봤으면 좋겠습니다. SNL작가들도요. @ 뚱뚱한 여자라도 성희롱 당할 수 있고, 또 불쾌한 게 당연하다는 사실이 이성으로는 알면서도 가슴으로는 단번에 와닿지 않는 걸 반성했습니다. @ 007 시리즈를 다 본 게 아니라 패러디를 다 알지는 못하겠더라구요.
