오랜만에 다시 찾아뵙네요. 오늘도 제 현실도피에 참여해주셔서 감사합니다. 지난 시간에는 홍차넷 월도들의 우상, 알버트 아인슈타인이 1905년 발표한 광자효과 이야기를 해보았습니다. (https://new.redtea.kr/?b=12&n=269) 당대 물리학자들 탈모의 주범이였던 광자효과를 설명하기 위해서 아인슈타인은 "이건 빛과 빛의 에너지가 순수한 파동처럼 연속성을 띄는게 아니라, 광자 단위의 유한한 개념이라면 해결이 된다"라고 주장합니다. 빛이 양자로서 이해되야한다는 이 주장은, "에너지는 연속적이지 않다"라는 양자역학 기본명제의 성립의 시작이라고 볼수있을것 같습니다. 근데 이 글들의 제목은 양자광학이 아니라 양자역학이자나요? 이 말은 빛과 빛의 에너지 뿐만 아니라, 다른 물질과 물질의 에너지 또한 양자로 이해해야한다는거죠. 그리고 이 이야기를 위해서 우리는 시간을 다시 좀 건너뛰어야합니다. 1905년 아인슈타인이 물리학계를 뒤흔들때 겨우 13살이였던 이 어린소년은 1910년 소르본느 대학에서 역사학을 전공하고있었습니다. 뭔가 범상치 않았던 오늘의 주인공은 역사학 학위를 받고 1913년 수학과 물리학을 공부하기 위해서 다시 소르본느로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 입대를 피했던 전 주인공 아인슈타인과는 다르게 1914년 세계 제1차대전에 참전하기도합니다. 실제로 공작가 출신의 귀족이였고 본인도 1960년 공작이 되었던 것을 생각해보면... 이것이 바로 노블레스 오블리주?! [금수저 스웨그] 어찌어찌 전쟁에서 돌아온 이후 우리의 주인공은 폴 랑주뱅의 지도하에 거침없이 물리학 박사학위를 따기 위해 전진합니다. 랑주뱅에 대해서 잠시 이야기를 해보자면, 랑주뱅은 과학계에서 거의 유일하게 부인에게 명성이 뒤지는 피에르 큐리의 학생이였고, 후에는 마리 큐리의 애인이였으며, 프랑스 공화당원이자, 인권회의 회장도 역임했던 화려한 스펙의 과학자였습니다. 과학계로 온다면 본인의 이름을 딴 공식들이있는것으로 게임셋이죠.  1924년 우리의 공작님은 박사졸업논문을 제출하시고, 바로 1929년에 박사졸업논문의 내용을 토대로 노벨 물리학상을 받습니다. 박사졸업논문으로 노벨 물리학상이라니! [금수저 스웨그2] 논문발표 5년만에 노벨상이라니!! [금수저 스웨그3] 그렇다면 도대체 논문이 무슨 내용이였길래 알아봐야겠죠? 지난 글을 기억해보신다면 아인슈타인이 본인의 논문에서 우리가 첫글에서 돌이켜보았던 플랑크의 1900년 설명을 직접적으로 언급하며 본인의 이론을 형성했었습니다. 우리의 금수저는 그 아인슈타인의 논문을 직접적으로 언급하며 새로운 이론을 주장합니다. 이론을 간소화하자면... "1905년 아인슈타인이 빛에 대해서 했던 설명을, 모든 물질에게 적용시켜보자" "질량 m과 속도 v가있는 모든 입자의 운동량은(p) 요 수식으로 설명이 된다: λ= h⁄p=h⁄mν √(1-ν²⁄c²)" 입니다. 뭐 수식도 중요하지만, 더 중요한건 빛의 파동입자 이중설을 실존질량이있는 모든 물체에 광범위하게 적용해야한다는 그 주장인거죠. [아니 어디서, 무슨 근거로... 아니 이게 뭔소리야???]라고 생각하신다면 괜찮습니다. 이 박사논문을 받은 랑주뱅을 비롯한 지도교수들도 도저히 이해를 못하겠어서 이 논문의 리뷰를 다른 사람에게 부탁합니다 (내가 이러려고 교수를했나 괴롭고 자괴감이...). 이 논문을 받은 사람은 다름아닌 아인슈타인이였죠. 아인슈타인은 본인의 논문을 훌륭하게 인용한 이 박사논문을 매우 좋아하였고, 우리의 공작님은 박사학위도 일사천리로 받아버리십니다. [금수저 스웨그 오버파워]  만40세 이전에 다른 사람들은 평생을 기다려도 커리어를 완성한 스웨그가 넘쳐흐르는 금수저 공작님은 바로 루이 빅토르 데 브로글리입니다.  브로글리가 상당히 빠르게 노벨상을 받을수있었던 이유는, 이론의 실험적 증명이 불과 3년후인 1927년에 되었던 영향이 클겁니다. 그리고 사실 이 실험은 전혀 의도치 않은 실수가 결정적인 영향을 끼쳤었습니다. 실험자들이였던 데이비슨과 거머 (Davisson and Germer)은 이미 1921년부터 전혀 다른 실험을 시도하고있었습니다. 금속 니켈에 전자를 쏘면 무슨일이 일어나는지 보려고했던거죠. 다만 이 실험을 위해서는 순도 높은 진공상태를 유지해야했는데, 이게 굉장히 힘들었기에 실험에 번번히 실패하고 말았었죠. 그 와중에 무려 진공 상태가 깨지면서 니켈이 산화 되는 실수까지 하게됩니다. 산화된 니켈을 되돌리기 위해서 둘은 니켈을 가열했고, 이는 의도치 않은 결과를 낳게됩니다. 기존의 다결정 형태의 (polycrystalline) 니켈이 산화되면서 단결정체로 (single crystalline) 변하게된거죠. 단순하게 말해서 굉장히 순도 높은 니켈 샘플을 보유하게 된겁니다. 그리고 이 높은 순도의 니켈에 전자를 쬐자 마치 파동이 겹치는 듯한 모양으로 2차 전자들이 형성되는 것을 보게됩니다 (1925년). 왜 이런 결과가 나왔는지 이해하지 못하여 머리를 감싸매고있던 데이비슨은 1926년 우연히 간 미팅에서 막스 본 (Max Born)이 자신의 데이터를 근거로 브로글리의 이론을 설명하는 강의를 듣게됩니다. 그리고 그 미팅에서 다른 많은 실험자들이 비슷한 실험을 시도했지만 충분한 진공상태를 만들지 못하거나, 너무나도 적은수의 2차 전자들을 감지하지 못해서 울고있었다는 얘기도 듣게되죠. 여기서 힘을 얻었는지 데이비슨과 거머는 1927년, 브로글리의 수식에 정확한 수치들을 대입하여 예측된 결과를 관측하며 브로글리의 이론을 증명합니다. 금수저 브로글리의 이야기를 끝내기 전에, 1926년에 일어났던 다른 중요한 일을 언급해야만 할것 같습니다. 브로글리의 이론은 양자역학계에 큰 반향을 일으켰고 많은 학자들 사이에서 회자되고있었다고 합니다 (데이비슨은 실험실에 갇혀있는 히키코모리였을수도..? 눈에 갑자기 땀이 흐르네요, 여긴 이제 눈도 펑펑오는데 왜 이러지...). 어찌되었든 1926년 즈음 한 세미나에서 브로글리의 물질의 입자파동 이중설에 대한 강의가있었고, 청중에 있던 다른 저명한 학자 데바이가(Debye), "야 근데 파동은 다 파동식이 있어야하자나?"하고 한마디를 툭 던집니다. 하지만 이 한마디는 싸늘한 비수 처럼 강의자의 가슴에 꼳혔습니다. 그리고 이 강의자는 바로 동작중지를하고 내연녀와 함께(예림이?) 알프스로 스키여행을 떠나버립니다. 휴가를 마치고 돌아온 강의자는 논문발표를 하는데, 논문을 요약해보자면... ["제 지난 강의에서 데바이가 브로글리 이론을 설명하는 과정에서 파동식의 부재를 언급하였습니다. 그래서 제가 그 파동식을 구했습니다"]   네 바로 어윈 슈뢰딩거의(Schrödinger) 슈뢰딩거 방정식이죠 (콧수염 법칙을 깨버리는군요... 하지만 다른 법칙은? ㅠㅠ) 이 슈뢰딩거 방정식이 갖는 의미에는 양자역학에서 말하는 '파동'이 무엇인가를 정확하게 정의하고 이해하는데에 있다고 봅니다. 1. 브로글리는 처음에는 물질이 파동이 실존한다고 믿었습니다. 2. 슈뢰딩거는 1926년 발표당시 이 파동은 '전하 밀도'를 표현한다고 생각했습니다만 (전자가 요기 많이있나~ 없나~), 이 접근법으로는 이야기를 풀어내지 못하고있었습니다. 3. 데이비슨에게 영감을 주었던 막스 본은, 바로 언급된 슈뢰딩거의 설명 시도 몇일 후, [파동(Ψ)은 확률 진폭]으로 이해해야하고, 고로 [Ψ²은 확률 밀도]가 된다는 사실을 증명합니다. (전자가 중요한게 아니야 바보야!) 4. 그리고 이를 기반으로 양자역학의 다양한 해석법들이 속속히 나타나기 시작합니다. 하지만 슈뢰딩거는 아인슈타인과 마찬가지로 양자역학의 확률적인 해석과 이해에 대한 불신을 떨쳐내지 못했다고합니다. 그리고 이 불신은 물리학 역사상 가장 많이 회자되는 고양이를 탄생시키고, 슈뢰딩거를 불멸의 집사로 만들어버립니다. 오늘도 장문의 글을 읽어주셔서 감사합니다.
