타임라인에서 어떤 특정한 댓글을 보고 이 비디오가 생각나서 바로 작성해봅니다 ㅎㅎ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbVOTJHA21k (비디오의 내용을 거의 그대로 배낍니다) 영어에는 같은 의미의 단어가 두가지씩 존재하는 경우가 꽤 많은편입니다. 예를 들어서 이런 쌍들이 존재하죠. Begin-Commence Words-Vocabulary Folk-People Want-Desire 이러한 쌍이 존재하는 이유는 영어의 근원에서 찾을수있다고합니다. 영어의 기본은 게르만어라고합니다, 그러하여 영어의 기본적인 단어들과 문법형태는 독어와 유사한 형태를 띄고있죠. 하지만, 12세기경 영어에 새로운 바람이 불기 시작했다고합니다. 바로 노르망디 공국의 형성으로 인한 로망스 언어, 특히 불어의 영향을 받기 시작한겁니다. 그리하여 바로 위의 단어들은 좌측에는 게르만 출신의 단어, 우측에는 로망스 출신의 단어가 배치되어있는 것이죠. 여기에서 좀 재밌는 현상이 나타낫다고합니다. 아래의 단어들도 위와 마찬가지로 왼쪽은 게르만, 오른쪽은 로망스 단어들인데요, 단어들의 뉘앙스를 한번 곰곰히 생각해보시길 바랍니다... Buy-Purchase Belly-Stomach Brotherly-Fraternal Understand-Comprehend Needs-Requirements Laughable-Ridiculous 무언가 느껴지시는게 있나요? 왼쪽의 게르만 단어보다 오른쪽의 로망스 단어들이 조금 더 '고급진' 느낌을 준다는 생각이 혹시 안드나요? 이는 바로 노르망 공국 당시에 평민들은 게르만 계통의 민족으로 게르만 영어를 계속 사용했지만, 귀족과 왕족은 처음에는 프랑스 출신들이 많았고, 차후에도 그 영향 + 라틴어가 유럽 귀족들의 공용어가 되면서 고오오급진 귀족님들은 로망스 영어를 계속 사용했던 영향이 아직까지 남아있는것이라고합니다. 그 예로, 영어에서 평민들이 키우던 가축들의 이름은 게르만 단어들이지만, 귀족이 먹던 고기의 이름은 로망스 단어들이라고하네요. Cow→Beef Calf→Veal Deer→Venison Pig→Pork Sheep→Mutton 처럼요. 물론 모든 게르만-로망스 단어쌍이 로망스 단어가 더 고급진 느낌을 주는건 아닙니다. 아래의 단어들과 같은 경우가 그렇죠: Uncouth-Rude Blossom-Flower Deem-Judge Foretell-Predict Seethe-Boil 이 단어들은 왜 관계가 역전이 되었을까요? 이는 바로 셰익스피어부터 시작해서 빅토리아 시대까지 영국의 문학가들이 '원형의 영어'를 더욱더 발전시키고 좋게 만들기 위한 숱한 문학적 노력의 여파라고합니다. 좀 더 평민들이 쉽게 공감하고, 전통적인 영어단어들로 귀족들까지 향유할수있는 작품들을 만들려고 하다보니 오히려 게르만 단어들이 더 고급져보이게 된거라고 보면 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 그리고 마지막으로 게르만-로망스 쌍이지만, 두 단어 사이에 우위가 거의 존재하지 않는 단어들도 존재합니다. 근데 영어는 참 신기한게 셰익스피어가 몇백년 전에 쓴 극들, 제인 오스틴이 200년 전에 쓴 소설들이 지금 읽어도 명확히 뜻이 전달된다는 것이에요 ㅠㅠ 다른 유럽쪽 언어/문학도 그럴테지만...
비유럽언어권 사람들에겐 불친절한 언어지만 또 여러 언어의 중간지점이 되기도 해서 배워놓고 나면 다른 유럽권 언어 배우기는 수월한 것 같아요. 그래서 유럽권 애들이 몇개국어에 능통한게 가능한 거겠죠 ㅠㅠㅠ
