봄 극장가에서 이 영화를 거르려고 했으나 우연히 홍차넷에서 '이 영화를 욕하지 말아줬음 좋겠다.'는 리틀미님의 글을 읽고 조금의 기대를 품고 관람하였습니다. 그리고 너무나 실망스러워 굳이 이런 글을 쓰게 되었습니다. 창작물을 감상하는 방법의 다양성을 존중하는 건 현대 시민들의 상식이기 때문에 이 영화에 대한 모든 옹호가 무용하다고 하지는 않을 것입니다. 그러나, 이 영화가 '우리나라 관객'들에게 나쁘게 보이는 이유가 기독교에 대한 서구의 오래된 신학적 논쟁이나 메타포에 대한 이해가 없으며, DC유니버스에 대한 팬보이적 이해가 없다는 뉘앙스의 해석에는 도저히 동의할 수가 없기 때문에 이 영화의 나쁜점을 지적하는 글을 쓰게 되었습니다. 먼저 가장 거슬렸던 것은 영화가 지니고 있는 신성과 인성을 논쟁하는 수준의 얄팍함입니다. 영화속 신성에 대한 논쟁은 오랜 기독교의 역사속에서 지속되어온 단성론과 합성론은 커녕, 그리스 신화속 반신(이방인)의 고민에 예수를 억지로 구겨넣은 결과물입니다. 물론 어떤 사람이 성경을 모티브로하는 은유를 사용한다해서, 그 해석이 반드시 성경적이어야 한다는 법은 없습니다. 그러나 영화가 예수의 신성성에 대한 어떤 이해도 없이 그저 그 이미지만을 가져다 쓰는 것은 그 하나로 이미 신성모독적입니다. 만약 영화의 주제가 우상화된 예수를 반어법적인 영상문법으로 비꼬는 것이라면 쌍수를 들고 환영할만한 장면들이 많았습니다. 그러나 영화는 자기가 창조한 이미지에 도취되어 희생과 사랑, 성인이자 종교인으로서의 예수에 대해 무지한 채로 노골적인 장면들을 내보내고 있습니다. 저는 그런 장면들에서 제작자의 만족스러움을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 그런데 왜 수치심은 제 몫인 걸까요? 남미에서 일어난 화재에서 어린 아이를 꺼내는 슈퍼맨에게 많은 사람들이 달려 들어 그 구원의 권능과 은총을 나누어 받고자 하는 장면은, 여러 성화에서 묘사되는 예수의 모습입니다. 수 많은 성화들이 지니고 있는 숨막힐듯한 알레고리들을 찾아본 사람이라면, 그런 예수의 은총을 받고자하는 사람들의 이면에 숨겨진 피억압자으로서의 정체성이나 물리적 거리와 상관없이 괴리되어있는 예수와 은총을 받고자 하는 사람들의 종교적 거리에 대해 알 수 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 영화가 사용한 것은 그저 구세주에게 달려드는 사람들의 이미지일 뿐이었습니다. 둠스데이와의 최종결전에서 피에타를 찍으면서 순식간에 슈퍼맨의 연인에서 성모 마리아로 탈바꿈한 로이스 레인의 경우도 마찬가지입니다. 예수의 순교와 구원, 그리고 그를 바라보는 성모에 대한 이해가 이 영화에 있습니까? 필요에 따라 성모적 지위를 가진 여인을 만들어내서 순교자만을 비추는 것이 예수의 사랑에 대해 어떤 이해가 있는 것입니까? 성모의 사랑에 대한 몰지각함은 말할 것도 없습니다. 많은 고전 미술작품들이 수 많은 알레고리로 해석의 방향을 제한해두었다 한들, 현대인에게 피에타는 다양한 방식으로 해석되고 있고 그 중 하나만이라도 영화에서 선택하고 보여줬다면 아무 말도 안했을 것입니다. 그러나 영화는 그런 종류의 노력을 전혀 하지 않았습니다. 신성과 고전 예술의 이미지를 이런 방식으로 빌려오는 것은 제작자의 뻔뻔함을 반증합니다. 비슷한 맥락에서 렉스 루터는 몇 번 눈에 띄는 문학작품의 구절들을 인용하긴 했지만 그것들이 큰 의미가 있으리라고는 상상하기 어렵습니다. 특히 롤리타의 첫 문단을 따온 등의 행위가 단순히 그 캐릭터의 신비로움을 더하기 위해서 외의 무슨 의미를 찾을 수 있을지 의문입니다. 그는 수 많은 생각과 있어보이는 문장들을 맥락없이 늘어놓는데 어느 것도 후에 생명력을 가지지 못합니다. 이것은 연출과 내러티브, 각본 세 개가 모두 거기에 협조하지 않기 때문이죠. 결과적으로 슈퍼맨과 배트맨이 가지고 있는 논쟁과 이미지들은 모두 겉치레에 불과하다는 것입니다. 영화는 어떤 대단한 생각을 품고있는 '척'을 끊임없이 하고 있지만 드러난 알맹이는 부실하기 짝이 없습니다. 이는 대놓고 내 알맹이가 부실함을 보여주는 영화들보다 훨씬 못한 결과를 낳을 뿐입니다. 그것 말고도 등장인물의 조형이나 개연성은 처참한 수준입니다. 배트맨은 인간에 대한 희망을 잃고 냉소적인 존재로 탈바꿈했음이 여실히 드러납니다. 자신의 상징과도 같은 동물인 박쥐와 함께 승천하는 꿈을 꾼 것이 아름다운 거짓말이라 하는 장면에서, 영웅적 행동을 통한 승천은 실패했고 자신의 세상에는 꿈속의 빛이 도래하지 않았음을 보여줍니다. 그 연출이 노골적인 것은 참아줄 수 있습니다. 어머니의 무덤에서 괴물이 튀어나와 브루스를 깨무는 장면에서 암시된 그의 가치관적 타락(인간에 대한 신뢰를 잃어버림.)도 마찬가지고요. 관객들이 제대로 이해하지 못했을 까봐 사실상 같은 의미의 장면을 꿈이라는 똑같은 장치를 통해 다른 구도로 보여주는 친절함에 어안이 벙벙해진 사람은 저 뿐만이 아닐 것입니다. 물론 그런 꿈들도 부족했는 지, 그의 타락은 설득력없이 클락 켄트의 입을 통해 반복적으로 나오고 있습니다. 슈퍼맨으로서 자신이 벌인 일은 안중에도 없는 무치함을 겸비한 켄트는 배트맨으로 인해 시민이 공포에 떨고 있음을 강조하고, 또 범죄자에게 낙인을 찍음으로서 사실상 사형집행까지 하는 그의 모습에 비판적인 발언을 할 때 쯤이면, 영화가 자신이 만들어낸 영웅의 정신병에 도취된 수준이 도리어 병적이지 않은가 의심할 정도입니다. 또 로이스 레인의 이야기는 모든 면에서 실망스러운데, 여성 캐릭터를 이런 식으로 사용하는 할리우드 기성영화가 또 하나 탄생했다는 사실이 놀라운 일은 아닙니다. 유능한 기자로서 그의 직업적 아이덴티티를 되살리기 위해서인지, 아니면 그만이 유일한 슈퍼맨의 이해자라는 것을 강조하기 위해서인지는 모르겠지만, 로이스는 한 시간이 넘는 런닝타임동안 홀로 진실을 쫓습니다. 저 영화 속의 사람들이 메트로폴리스에서 최소한 수 만 단위의 사람들이 죽었을 사건보다 아프리카 반군들 사이에 벌어진 내전에 경악하며 슈퍼맨을 추궁한다는 사실의 저질스러운 설득력이 거슬리는 것은 어쩔 수 없습니다. 그래도 진실을 찾으려하는 한 사람으로서 그려진 로이스는 나름의 이야기를 부여받는 듯 했으나 정작 장군과의 접선에서 음모의 배후가 렉스 루터라는 것을 알게 되고도 그 사실이 영화속 이야기에 아무런 영향을 끼치지 못하는 부분에서는 화가날 정도입니다. 로이스는 애초에 슈퍼맨을 불신하는 인물이 아니었기에 그 혼자 진실을 알게 된 것은 영화의 맥락에서 아무 의미가 없습니다. 이토록 중심 서사와 멀리 떨어진 이야기를 로이스에게 줘 놓고서는, 아무런 설명도 없이 크립토나이트 창이 둠스데이를 죽일 무기라는 것을 깨닫고(사실 이 영화는 전작에도 이랬습니다. 고공에서 수 천 km를 오가며 싸운 조드와 슈퍼맨의 최종결전지에 뜬금없이 나타난다거나 등의) 스스로 위험에 빠져서 슈퍼맨에 구해진 다음, dc버전 피에타의 도구로 사용되는 등 끔찍한 일들은 로이스를 주위로 반복됩니다. 이 영화의 개연성은 앞선 이야기와의 유기적 연결이 아니라 자기가 설정해놓은 이미지를 위한 도구들입니다. 단적으로 예를 들면 최후의 결전에서 왜 슈퍼맨은 원더우먼에게 창을 넘기고 마지막 일격을 양보하지 않았을까요? 원더우먼이 나타난지 얼마되지 않은 동료이기 때문에 신뢰하지 못해서? 혹은 진실의 올가미가 둠스데이를 잡아두기 위해 꼭 필요한 메즈기술이라? 어느것도 영화속에서는 설명되지 않지요. 하지만 사실 정답은 정해져 있습니다. 그것은 슈퍼맨이 렉스 루터라는 인간의 죄로 창조된 둠스데이에게 죽은 후 부활해야 할 운명이기 때문입니다. 아 이 얼마나 그리스 비극적 발상입니까? 그러나 저는 감히 잭 스나이더를 에우리피데스에 비교하는 우를 범할 생각은 없습니다. 왜냐면 대부분의 그리스 비극들은 이 영화보단 더 나은 서사와 철학을 가지고 있기 때문이죠. 기독교적 메타포를 그리스 비극으로 풀어내려는 이 대담한 시도는 결국 가증함(Abomination)으로 끝났습니다. 저는 이 영화가 욕을 먹었으면 좋겠습니다. 이 영화가 평론가들에게 욕 먹는 이유는 노골적인 메타포의 사용과 세련되지 못함인데 우리나라 관객들이 욕하는 이유는 본문에 쓰신 이유라고 느껴져서 쓴 내용이었습니다. 뻔뻔함이냐 불친절함이냐에서 뻔뻔함 쪽인데 우리나라 관객들은 불친절함만 이야기하고 있는 것 같아서요.
배트맨이랑 슈퍼맨은 싸우기로 했는데 이미 만화책에서 싸운 방법대로 싸워야 하고 슈퍼맨은 언제 어디서나 로이스 레인을 구하고 로이스 레인도 슈퍼맨을 도와줘야 하고 슈퍼맨은 둠스데이한테 죽었다가 살아나야 합니다. 그냥 그런 건 이미 정해진 거니까 넘어가려고 한 거죠. ... 더 보기

ㅋㅋ 사실 예의상 뭔가 둘러대는 식으로 얘기했는데 당황스러워서 뭐라고 해야될 지 모르겠네요 ㅋㅋ
