| Subject | 동시에 대부 비판적으로 바라보기 |
 대부는 단순하게 보면 깡패의 이야기입니다. 그리고 이 깡패라는 소재를 이용해 남성의 욕망을 자극하는 권력 포르노로 볼 수도 있습니다. 명배우들의 연기와 Nino Rota의 사운드트랙이 영화를 수놓고 있지만 그럼에도 이 작품의 최면효과를 다 설명해주지는 못합니다. 마이클이라는 사내의 권력 투쟁기를 통해 남성 관객들이 보고 싶은 것만을 보여주는 트릭을 이용하고 있음을 부정하기 어렵습니다. 첫째, 이 영화의 두 프로타고니스트인 비토와 마이클에게서 욕망이 거세되었습니다. 이들이 콜리오네 패밀리를 운영하는 것은 어떤 식으로든 이익이 연관되어 있겠죠. 그럼에도 영화는 이들의 욕망을 보여주는 대신 내내 초탈해있는 모습만을 보여줍니다. 비토 콜리오네에게서는 권력의 순기능만이 목격됩니다. 비토 콜리오네는 가족을 강조하는 대사로 부성애와 책임감을 보이며 든든한 가장으로서의 모습을 어필하고 있습니다. 또한 주변 사람들의 청을 들어주는 형식으로 힘을 행사하기에 남들에게 어떤 식으로든 도움이 되고 필요한 사람이라는 이미지를 보여주고 있습니다. 마약은 다루지 않는다는 최소한의 원칙을 내세우는 모습에서는 비록 폭력조직의 두목이지만 일종의 윤리의식이 있다는 느낌도 들게 하지요. 마이클 역시도 이런 점은 비슷합니다. 그에게는 애초에 조직원으로 활동하려던 게 아니라 아버지를 지키고 싶었을 뿐이라는 도덕적 알리바이가 있습니다. 프레도가 카지노에 차려놓은 술판을 질색하는 모습에서는 다소 금욕적인 면을 보이며 마이클이 품은 야망이 한층 더 고차원적인 것처럼 보이게 하지요. 마이클이 폭력을 행사하는 것은 일종의 단죄와 복수의 형식입니다. 용서할 수 없는 이들을 향해 폭력을 휘두르기에 그것이 일견 정당한 심판처럼 착각을 일으키기도 하지요. 둘째, 이 영화에서 나오는 폭력은 죄다 우아하고 근사하게 그려집니다. 일단 누군가가 위협하는 장면에서 야만적인 묘사는 그렇게 많지 않습니다. 이를테면 마이클이 매형인 카를로를 위협하는 장면을 보십시오. 영화는 마이클의 무시무시함을 그리기 위해 협박당하는 대상인 카를로의 반응을 극대화시켜 이를 표현하고 있습니다. 마이클의 딱딱한 말 몇마디에 다 큰 남자가 질질 짜며 애원하는 장면을 보며 사람들은 지극히 효과적이고 군더더기 없는 폭력을 감상할 수 있는 거죠. 누군가가 누구를 죽이는 장면들은 단순한 움직임이지만 실수가 없고 단 한번의 시도로 깔끔하게 끝납니다. 거기에는 총알이 빗나가는 법도 없고, 엉뚱한데 총을 맞아서 낑낑대는 인간도 없으며 죽기 살기로 아둥바둥하는 인간도 없습니다. 대부는 죽음의 과정을 죄다 생략해놓았습니다. 사람을 죽이는 순간의 처참하고 더러운 감정은 단말마에 의해 금새 끝나고 모든 것이 끝난 상황에서 흐르는 피와 움직이지 않는 시체를 통해 죽음이라는 상태만을 보여줍니다. 가장 처참하게 죽는 소니가 관객이 불쌍하다고 감정을 이입할 만한 이른바 “우리편”이라는 것을 생각해본다면, 사실 대부는 폭력 자체가 거의 들어가 있지 않은 갱스터 영화라고 볼 수 있겠지요. 콜리오네 패밀리의 폭력과 살인을 죄악으로 인식할 틈이 거의 주어지지 않습니다. 셋째. 대부는 일종의 노블레스들간의 결투를 그리고 있습니다. 우리가 대부를 통해 보는 것은 이른바 그 세계를 주물러대는 거물들입니다. 잔챙이들은 거의 보이지도 않으며 부하들 역시도 속해있는 조직의 의지에 충성하는 일종의 꼭두각시입니다. 때문에 대부는 권력층이 벌이는 하나의 체스게임처럼 그려집니다. (뉴욕의 5대 패밀리가 회동하는 장면이 보여주는 격식 또한 이런 효과를 일으킵니다.) 전쟁을 그릴 때 병사들이 죽어나가는 장면을 그리면 영화는 끔찍하고 생명에 관한 이야기가 됩니다. 하지만 결정권자 몇몇과 이들의 대화, 기싸움, 나름의 상식과 예의를 차린 회동 장면들을 통해 사람들은 이것이 갱스터 영화며 사람들이 죽어나간다는 인식을 잘 하지 못합니다. 조직간의 전쟁은 대사 몇마디를 통해 암시될 뿐이죠. 주먹 세계 속 잘 나간다는 인물들의 이야기이기 때문에 사람들은 인물들 개인의 운명에 더더욱 집중하게 됩니다. 셀레브리티들의 삶을 구경하는 것처럼요. 결과적으로 영화는 권력적인 측면을 부각시키고 영화의 배경을 채우는 갱스터들의 비도덕적인 면들은 은폐합니다. 왜 영화를 재미있게 봐놓고서 굳이 이런 딴지를 거느냐구요? 미성년자 딱지는 오래 전에 뗀 저도 좀 정신 못차릴 정도로 근사한 이야기라면, 이 영화가 미화된 이야기라는 걸 재고해 볼 필요가 있지 않을까요. 과거에는 이 영화 때문에 몇명이나 갱의 길로 빠졌고 그 때문에 몇이나 인생을 망쳤을지, 혹은 자기들의 악독한 짓을 변명했을지 생각하면 좀 끔찍하지 않습니까. 이런 영화를 보면 죽거나 혹은 나쁘거나 정도는 봐줘야 좀 중화를 시킬 수 있을 것 같기도 하네요. @ 듀나는 이 영화의 감상문을 쓰지 않았더군요(안 봤을 리가 없지요) 개인적으로는, 영화 속에서 여자들이 공기 취급받는 게 굉장히 불쾌해서가 아니었을까 합니다. 대부는 이를 당연한 것처럼, 혹은 남자들만의 세계인 것처럼 가족 내 여성에게 배타적으로 구는 것을 정당화하는 구석이 있으니까요. @ 너무 길기도 하고, 주제도 하나로 합쳐지지 않아서 글을 나눠 올립니다.
