 여성 인권 영화제에 다녀왔습니다. 시사회에 당첨되었을 뿐인데 그게 여성 인권 영화제였네요. 여성 영화인 축제도 하던데, 이정현씨나 박소담씨가 궁금하긴 했지만 구경만 하는 건 좀 시간낭비일 것 같았네요. 필름 상태도 온전하지 않았으니 좀 헐렁하게 이야기해보죠. <여판사>의 홍은원 감독은 우리나라의 "두번째" 여자 감독입니다. 최초의 여자 감독은 박남옥 감독이구요. 임순례 감독이 여섯번째 여자 감독인가? 그 이후로는 딱히 여자 감독들에게 넘버링을 하지 않는다고 합니다. 현역으로 활동하시는 여자 감독님들이 꽤 있으니까요. 올해 작품 중에서 떠오르는 건 <특종>의 노덕 감독님이 있네요. 변영주 감독, 이정향 감독, 이경미 감독, 박찬옥 감독... 적지 않은 여성 감독들이 작품을 남기고, 활동 중이시죠. 배우나 감독으로서, 남녀가 동등한 대우를 받는다고는 할 수 없지만 그런 상황 속에서도 여러 감독들이 약진 중입니다. 이 감독님들이 이렇게 작품을 내놓을 수 있는 건 홍은원 감독 같은 선구자들이 있었기 때문일 겁니다. <여판사>는 1962년에 제작된 작품입니다. 옛날 영화하면 바로 떠올릴, 후시 녹음과 그 시대 고유의 어투가 고스란히 묻어나 있는 그런 작품이죠. 영화의 줄거리는 대충 이렇습니다. 판사를 꿈꾸는 당찬 여주인공 허진숙이 마침내 꿈을 이룹니다. 진숙의 성실함과 능력을 높이 산 채사장은 자신의 아들 규식을 진숙과 결혼시킵니다. 결혼한 후 진숙은 가문의 중심이 되어 사람들의 주목을 받고, 시아버지를 제외한 식구들은 이게 영 못마땅하죠. 가정살림과 판사일을 다 잘해보려던 진숙은 시집 식구들의 핍박과 남편의 냉대에 조금씩 지쳐갑니다. 규식은 바깥으로 나돌다가 아버지의 비서인 화영과 바람이 나고, 시어머니는 몰래 낳은 아들에게 협박을 당하고 있었습니다. 그러던 중 규식의 할머니가 독살되는 사건이 일어나고, 범인으로 지목된 시어머니를 구하기 위해 진숙은 판사직을 버리고 변호사로서 법정에 들어섭니다. 영화는 크게 세 부분으로 나누어져 있습니다. 진숙이 판사가 되기 전, 진숙이 판사가 되고 난 후, 진숙이 변호사로서 시어머니를 변호하는 부분들로 이야기가 이루어져 있어요. 옛날 영화다 보니 영화 속 대사들은 매우 직설적입니다. 대놓고 계몽적이라서 어떤 장면에서는 웃음을 참을 수가 없더군요. 진숙이 절간에서 공부할 때 구 남친인 동훈과 이런 대화를 나눕니다. "여성은 평범한 주부가 되는 길이 제일 행복하지 않을까?" (다찌마와 리 톤으로 읽어야 합니다) 뭐 이 시대에는 이런 가치관이 당연했겠죠. 살아 생전의 저희 외할아버지도 "여자가 뭐하러 대학을 가 껄껄껄" 이러셨으니까. "여성이 직업을 가졌다구 해서 가정파괴의 위험성이 백퍼센트 부수된다고는 할 수 없잖아요. 주부의 노력여하에 달렸다구 생각해요. 동훈씨야말로 좀더 시야를 넓혀 생각해보실 순 없어요?" 동훈의 대답 역시 걸작입니다. "민도가 높은 선진국에서도 어려운 일이야." 여자친구가 판사님이 되려고 하시는데 어딜 감히..... 지금 같으면 꿈도 못꿀 일이죠. -_- 동훈도 나름 엘리트이긴 해요. 의사니까. (동훈씨!!! 아직도 대한민국은 민도가 여전히 땅바닥을 헤엄치고 있답니다!!!) 남자들이 못마땅해하는 데는 딱히 이유가 없어요. 그냥 어쩐지 싫다, 암탉이 울면 집안이 망한다 이런 소리 뿐입니다. 옛날 영화라서 더 꼰대스럽게 나와요. 짜증나는데 웃기긴 웃깁니다. 말도 안되는 소리를 굉장히 진지하게 하니까요. 영화는 사회적 지위의 향상을 여성인권 신장의 수단으로 보여줍니다. 여자도 판사가 될 수 있다!! 연일 대서특필이 되죠. 국내 유일의 여판사가 된 진숙은 유명인사가 되고 결혼까지 하지만 막상 일이 잘 풀리지는 않아요. "어디 여자가~" 라는 식으로 늘 아내로서의 도리를 강요당하고 사소한 행동들도 잘난 척이라고 오해를 받죠. 이는 영화가 제시하는 해답에 대한 자기부정인 동시에, 여성 인권이 나갈 길이 정말 멀다는 현실적 증명이기도 합니다. 판사가 되어도 여전히 누군가의 집사람이자 며느리로서 항상 질책을 당해야 한다면 이를 어떻게 해야 할까요? 진숙은 갈등합니다. 일찍 퇴근하고서는 저녁상도 차리고, 가족의 일원으로 섞여보려고 하지만 딱히 실효를 거두진 못해요. 이 영화에서 재미있는 건, 시아버지 채사장이라는 캐릭터가 차지하는 위치입니다. 여성의 독립을 다루고 있는 영화는 흔히 여성들끼리 연대하기 마련이죠. 그런데 이 영화 속에서는 특이하게도 남자, 그것도 집의 실질적 최고위자인 시아버지가 주인공을 지지합니다. 그것도 아주 전폭적으로요. 진숙을 못살게 구는 자기 딸의 뺨을 때리기도 하고(요즘 영화처럼 철썩 때리는 것도 아닙니다. 뺨 빨리 떄리기 챔피언처럼 냅다 갈겨요) 진숙을 두고 바람피우는 규식을 꾸짖고 집으로 데리고 오기도 합니다. 시집살이를 못시켜서 안달인 시어머니를 달래기도 하고, 나이 상으로는 최연장자인 어머니 - 진숙에게는 시조부모 - 를 극진히 모시기도 하죠. 시아버지의 존재는 그 자체로 여성을 보호하고 인정하는 형태로 이야기를 끌고 나갑니다. 이 때문에 이 영화는 여성의 독립과 사회적 성장을 이야기하는 것 같으면서도 실질적으로는 남성의 비호 아래 머물러있는 여자의 이야기처럼도 보이죠. 시집살이 때문에 못살겟다면 스스로 이에 맞서고 깨부숴야 여성으로서의 자유를 쟁취했다고 할 수 있을 거에요. 그런데 여판사로서, 며느리로서 시아버지에게 인정받는 구도가 되기 때문에 여성의 인권 신장이 남성이라는 실권자의 힘을 빌리는 구도가 되고 말죠. 만약 판사라는 최고의 사회적 지위가 없었다면 과연 진숙은 온당한 대접을 받을 수 있었을까, 혹은 다른 평범한 여성들은 어떻게 되는 걸까 하는 여러 질문들이 떠올라요. 물론 20세기 중반 여성이 아직 밥이나 하고 마누라 아니면 얘기 엄마가 인생의 종착지였던 시절에 완벽한 독립을 이야기할 수는 없었을 겁니다. 개인적으로는 <여판사>가 만들어지기 2년전에 나온 김기영 감독의 <하녀>가 저절로 떠오르더군요. 개인으로 여성들이 부딪히고, 양 극단의 여성은 사회 구조 속에서 부정할 수 밖에 없다는 파격을 선보였던 것에 비하면 <여판사>는 좀 얌전하고 그 보폭이 좁게 느껴져요. 물론 김기영 감독도 여성들이여 혁명하라 이런 캠페인성으로 영화를 만들었던 건 아니니 영화 속 여성주의를 단순비교하는 건 무리가 있습니다. 그럼에도, 여성 감독이 직접 시나리오를 쓰고 찍은 영화가 이렇게 안전노선으로만 흘러가는 건 살짝 아쉽기도 해요. 영화 속 시아버지의 캐릭터는 여성의 사회적 자립이라는 주제를 좀 흐리는 게 사실입니다. 반대로, 시아버지의 캐릭터가 당시의 남성 관객들에게 모범적인 남성상을 제시하고 있다 - 는 이야기도 있었어요. 영화 속 찌질한 남자들과 달리, 시아버지 채사장(영화 속에서 부까지 갖춘)은 가장 진보적이고 멋진 인물로 나오니까요. 여성들은 진숙처럼 당당하게 일을 하시오!! 남성들은 저기 올바르고 존경받는 채사장을 본받으시오!! (다른 찌질이들은 반면교사로 삼으시오!) 라는 이야기일 겁니다. 안타까운 건, 남성들의 편견을 영화 속에 그대로 가져왔다는 점입니다. 여자의 적은 여자 - 라는 구도로 진숙은 시어머니와 시누이에게 가장 크게 시달리거든요. 시누이는 우리의 여판사님에게 누가 갖다바치는 뇌물을 빼돌리기도 하구요. 저 시대 판사까지 하는 여성을 저렇게 당당히 괴롭힐 수 있을까 하는 어떤 리얼리즘에 기반한 불만도 살짝 생기긴 합니다. 이 또한 여성들은 자기보다 잘 나가는 여성 동지들을 시기하거나 헐뜯지 말고 다 같은 여성으로 서로 존중합시다!! 라는 감독의 메시지인거겠지요. 남성중심주의를 공고히 하는 부분에서 여성이라는 성별이 절대적인 면죄부가 될 수는 없을 테니까요. 남성들의 외도가 훨씬 더 공공연하던 시절에 시어머니의 숨긴 자식이 영화 속 결정적인 전환점이 되는 것도 그렇게 공정하지는 않아 보였어요. 진숙이 판사를 그만두고, 외도를 한 남편을 이해하며 용서할 때 (.............-_-) 영화 속에서 할머니가 죽는 사건이 일어납니다. 할머니가 쥬스를 마시다 그 안에 들어간 독 때문에 죽은 것이 드러나고, 이야기는 갑자기 추리물로 장르를 선회합니다. 인물들의 증언을 통해 그 시점부터 차근차근 역순으로 시간을 배열하며 사건들을 짚어보는 정통 추리 코스를 밟아요. 어머니가 쥬스에 독을 탔다는 것이 유력해지고, 진숙은 이 사건에 대한 변론을 맡기로 합니다. 여기서는 법정 공방이 길게 펼쳐지기도 하는데, 검찰 측의 허술한 추측을 논리정연하게 반박하는 진숙의 모습은 꽤 멋있습니다. 시어머니가 (반억지)로 자백을 했음에도, 독약의 구입처와 그 방법, 흐릿한 동기, 우연성이 짙은 사건의 경과 등 여러가지 헛점을 진숙은 들춰냅니다. 결국 사건의 진실은 시어머니의 숨겨진 자식이라는 데서 밝혀집니다. 아편쟁이인 이 자는 자기 존재가 부잣집에서 멀쩡히 사는 어미에게 민폐가 된다는 자괴감과 울분에 못이겨 눈앞에서 음독자살을 하려고 했던 거죠. 독을 탄 쥬스를 어찌어찌 시어머니가 다른 사람에게 건네고 건네고 하다가 그걸 재수없게 마신 할머니가 죽게 된 겁니다. -_-;; 검사측에서 진숙의 변론이 나올 때마다 당황스런 표정을 짓는 게 귀엽긴 했어요. 여기서도 영화는 반보만 더 나갔더라면 하는 아쉬움이 있습니다. 헤로인으로서 진숙이 시어머니를 구하고 가정을 다시 복원시키는 혁혁한 공을 세운 건 분명해요. 그러나 가정의 압박 때문에 판사직을 그만둬야 했던 건 영화의 제목을 배신하는 것처럼 보이기도 하죠. 여판사라는 제목을 달고 있는데 주인공이 판사를 그만두는 건 아무리 봐도 가부장제라는 억압에 여성의 성장 자체를 헌납하고, 타협하는 느낌이 들거든요. 이런 불만은 현대에 살고 있는 사람이 과거의 작품에 미래적으로 하는 투정이겠지요. 진숙은 자신의 능력을 잘 살려서 위기를 넘기고 가족으로나 사회적으로 인정받게 되니까요. 결국 사건이 무사히 종결되고, 이제 가족들끼리 화기애애한 장면이 나오나 싶었는데 엔딩 부분이 소실된 바람에 영화는 정말 갑자기 - 끝 -. 객석이 약간 웅성거려서 전 재빨리 박수를 쳤습니다. 크크크 다들 따라치시더군요. 아무튼....좋은 영화였어!! 하고 박수로 얼머부렸죠. 지금의 정서나 사상으로는 좀 고루하고 답답해보이는 부분들이 분명히 있습니다. 그러나 이 영화가 비판하는 지점들은 현재에도 여전히 유효해요. 반세기가 지났고 더빙 목소리는 이제 코메디처럼 느껴지는데도 영화 속 메시지는 낡지 않았다면 이건 좀 반성해 볼 문제입니다. 이런 점 때문에라도 여성 감독들의 활약을 더 기대하게 됩니다. 문소리 같은 배우도 한국 영화계에서 여성들이 제대로 대접을 못받는 이야기를 영화로 직접 찍고 있죠. 굳이 부조리를 고발하는 이야기가 아니더라도, 한국 영화계에서 여성들이 여성의 이야기를 더 많이 다뤄줬으면 하는 소망이 있습니다. 뭐 이런 거 저런 거 떠나서 한국 고전 영화에 대한 흥미가 더 커졌습니다. 성대모사의 재료로만 존재하는 영화들을 좀 더 챙겨봐야겠어요. 복고 감성을 참 싫어하는데, 영화에 관해서는 왜 이렇게 옛스러움이 끌리는 건지.... @ 영화에서 "사과나무에 배 열리기를 바라는, 시간 보낼 일이 답답한 인간들의 취미일 뿐이야" 라는 대사가 나옵니다. 전 저 비슷한 말을 무려 2015년 실제로 누군가에게 충고조로 들은 적이 있어서 웃음 참는 게 힘들었네요. 저도 복고감성 싫어해요. 지금 사는 시간을 거부하는 제스쳐는 희극 배우의 자학개그 같은 키치일 뿐이죠. 그러니 개그는 개그로 끝내야하는데... 그 제스쳐로 지금을 살아가는 사람을 경멸하며 자신에게 거대한 시대적 사명감이 얹혀있는양 구는 거보먼 절로 코웃음이 난다는... 근데 영화는 복고도 좋죠. 영화엔 그런 제스쳐가 없으니까요. 재미있는 영화평 잘 읽고 갑니다.
