 명나라 후기, 도요토미 히데요시의 패권 추구에 내몰린 일본인들은 중국 남쪽 해안가에 자리를 잡고 명예회복을 꿈꾸며 세력을 키우고 있었습니다. 신식 무기로 무장한 외부 세력이 자리를 잡아가자 불안한 명 조정은 관리를 파견해 이들을 회유하려 하죠. 그러나 사무라이는 준엄한 관리의 몸을 두 쪽으로 가르며 가차없는 검기로 답하고, 성내는 수라장이 됩니다. 이에 분노한 명의 관리는 네덜란드에서 수입한 군함으로 이들을 꺾으려 하죠. 이 때, 성벽 위에서 또 다른 신호가 떨어지고, 거대한 포격에 군함은 무력화됩니다. 지붕 위에서 붉은 옷의 사내가 홀연히 나타나고, 이름을 물었던 관리는 대답을 곱씹을 틈도 없이 머리와 몸이 나눠집니다. 무서운 실력으로 단번에 명의 군세와 무공을 꺾은 사내를 바라보며 일본군의 우두머리는 그 사내의 이름을 중얼거립니다. 동.방.불.패. 흔히들 이 작품을 임청하의 출세작으로만 기억합니다. 한 작품의 광채를 내뿜는 지점은 다른 장점들 위로 그림자를 드리우죠. 아직도 샤말란의 식스 센스는 반전이라는 서술 트릭의 극적 효과에 다른 모든 부분이 가려지고 있지 않습니까. 그러나 동방불패가 괜히 무협물의 르네상스라 불리는 게 아닙니다. 작품 속에서 화려하고 호쾌한 액션들이 장르적 미학을 마음껏 뽐내죠. 재빠르게 넘어가는 수많은 컷들 속에서도 각양각색의 무공이 선보입니다. 짧은 컷에도 커다란 동선들이 그려지고, 수많은 합을 교차해요. 이런 씬들은 요즘 액션과 달리 오락적 요소가 충만합니다. 발전해간다고 하지만, 지금의 액션은 점점 메마른 스턴트로 변해가고 있죠. 타격감 위주의 액션은 이 전보다 낭비가 없고 몰입감이 높습니다. 그러나 그만큼 피로감이 높고 시각적 흥이 덜해요. 그에 비하면 상상력을 마음껏 구현하는 동방불패의 연출은 담대하고 재기발랄합니다. 하늘을 누비고 물을 가르고 뛰노는 액션들은 비현실적인 만큼 시각적 쾌감이 가득하죠. 영화는 상상력의 스케일로 보편적 재미를 담보하고, 유혈낭자한 씬들로는 일부 팬들의 고어적 쾌감 또한 만족시키고 있습니다. 기본 줄거리는 한 인물의 야심에 점화됩니다. 그러나 그 흐름의 바탕이 되는 것은 인물간의 유대입니다. 이들의 정치적 갈등은 일일히 설명되기 때문에 큰 무게를 갖지 못해요. 일본인 캐릭터들은 무공을 뽐내는 기능적 활용이 두드러지고, 나머지 인물들은 임아행의 복수심과 애매한 의협심에 휘둘리는 인상이 더 강합니다. 그러나 이들이 얽힌 감정 역시 뚜렷하지는 않습니다. 사지가 쪼개지고 인물들은 서로를 노려보지만 적극적으로 미워하지는 못하죠. 사건의 원흉인 동방불패 역시 몇번이나 살기를 되돌리며 자신의 명분을 흐릿하게 만듭니다. 강호를 무대로 이들은 꼭두각시 노릇을 하는 것처럼 보입니다. 이 애매한 감정선은 격렬한 전투와 대조되어 이야기에 운치를 더합니다. 삶과 죽음이 치열하게 오고가지만 정작 이를 다루는 인물들의 방황이 세계 전체를 덧없는 공간으로 바꿔놓습니다. 이야기 중간중간을 채우는 활기도 종국에는 허무의 멋을 완성하는 조각이 됩니다. 아무리 다른 장점을 조명해도 이 영화는 동방불패라는 캐릭터로 결론을 내게 됩니다. 일단 성전환이라는 젠더 개념을 이야기하지 않을 수 없겠지요. 남성에서 여성으로 바뀌는 이 급진적 젠더 개념은 남녀 모두에게 보편적인 신비감을 제공하면서도 퀴어의 매력 역시 함축하고 있습니다. 악사매와 영영 사이에서 벌어지는 전통적 삼각관계는 별로 눈에 들어오지 않아요. 영호충과 동방불패, 동방불패와 씨씨의 관계는 동성애와 트렌스젠더의 함의가 묻어나옵니다. 다양한 해석이 가능한 이 이질적 로맨스는 헤테로 로맨스가 주지 못하는 묘한 긴장감을 부여하죠. 성전환이 이뤄지기 전 동방불패가 목소리를 감추고 행동하는 부분에서 영화의 로맨스는 극대화됩니다. 비밀을 감춘 채 줄다리기를 하는 길티 플레져가 가장 크고, 이들 사이의 기류가 오묘해지는 순간이기도 해요. 성전환이 끝난 후에도, 동방불패를 비웃는 임아행과 혼란스러워하는 영호충 때문에 퀴어 로맨스의 긴장감은 계속됩니다. 동방불패는 최후까지도 영호충에게 하룻밤 진실을 밝히지 않기 때문에 이 여운은 쭉 이어집니다. 물론 동방불패를 분한 임청하의 성별이 여자라는 것을 인지하고 보기 때문에 관객 입장에서 퀴어 개념이 많이 희석되었다는 것은 부정할 수 없습니다. 무협이라는 장르 안에서 여성은 결국 조력자 아니면 전리품 취급을 받기 쉽습니다. 그러나 이 영화는 여성성을 중요한 화두로 다루고 있습니다. 이를 가장 잘 드러내는 캐릭터가 영호충의 파트너인 악사매입니다. 자신이 속한 사회로부터 젠더, 여성성을 인정받지 못한다는 점에서 악사매는 동방불패의 거울입니다. 여자가 되고 싶어 화장을 하거나, 화장을 하고 난 뒤 주변 사람들의 지지를 구하는 데 실패하는 장면에서 이 둘은 닮아있죠. 그러나 스스로를 인식하는 부분에서 이 둘은 대칭을 이룹니다. 악사매는 원래 여자였지만 유사 남성으로 살아왔고, 그 벽을 부수는 데 실패합니다. 마지막까지 영호충의 애정을 얻지도 못하고, 여성보다는 무성의 존재로 남죠. 동방불패는 원래 남자였으나 변화의 결과인 여성성을 능동적으로 받아들입니다. 그리고 자신의 애정을 영호충에게 관철하죠. 자신의 여성성이 공격당할 때도 이를 부끄럽게 여기지 않으며 여성으로서의 욕망을 적극적으로 드러냅니다. 악사매가 현실적인 여성의 노력과 한계를 대변한다면, 동방불패는 보다 초월적인 여성으로서 어떤 이상을 제시하고 있는 셈입니다. 특히 여성이 되어 절정의 무공을 획득한다는 설정, 이를 하찮게 취급하는 임아행과의 역학 관계, 바늘과 실을 이용한 정적이면서도 우아한 무공의 연출 등 이 캐릭터는 여성성의 표현에서 나름의 의미가 있다 할 수 있습니다. 사회적 의미를 걷어내더라도, 이 캐릭터의 매력이 바래지는 않습니다. 사랑과 반란 모두 실패한 여성이라는 점에서 동방불패가 주는 비극적 카타르시스는 상당합니다. 이는 동방불패가 여성으로서, 퀴어로서, 묘족이라는 민족적 소수자로서 약자의 위치에 놓여있는 점이 어필하기 때문입니다. 더불어 기존 세력에 저항하는 모습이 동방불패를 타도의 대상 대신 도전자로 나타냅니다. 그래서 동방불패의 패배는 악의 타도보다는 일장춘몽의 성격이 더 짙습니다. 구원을 마다하고 스스로 파멸을 선택하는 마지막 장면은 이 캐릭터의 독보적인 매력이 뿜어나옵니다. 자기 운명을 주도하면서도, 피할 수 없는 변화는 순응하고, 종국에는 고고하게 떠나는 모습이 아름답죠. 이후 영영과 영호충의 이별은 사족처럼 느껴질 정도입니다. 인생사를 모조리 함축하는 인물의 비극 속에서 연애사 따위는 크게 와닿지 않죠. 동방불패가 그토록 사람들을 홀렸던 이유는 캐릭터의 구축이 좋았기 때문입니다. 동시에, 임청하라는 배우의 존재감이 스크린 속에서 이 캐릭터를 완성하고 있습니다. 어떤 영화는 특정 요소가 절대적으로 큰 비중을 차지하기도 하죠. 그것은 시나리오, 촬영, 음악, 연기가 될 수도 있습니다. 그리고 이 영화는 배우의 아우라가 이를 담당합니다. 영화 속에서 임청하보다 젊고 이쁜 배우들이 등장합니다. 냉정히 말해서 임청하가 관지림보다 젊고 이쁘다고 말 하긴 어렵죠. 그렇지만 이 영화는 이제 임청하를 빼놓고서 성립할 수 없는 작품이 되었습니다. 동방불패는 이제 아이콘에 더 가깝습니다. 이것이 배우의 발목을 붙잡는 족쇄가 되기도 했습니다만 일종의 최면적 매력을 많은 이들에게 각인시킨 것은 사실입니다. 이런 영화는 리메이크가 거의 불가능하죠. 발전한 기술과 각색에 힘입어 옛날 이야기들이 재등장하곤 합니다. 그럼에도, 이 정도로 감성과 오락이 조화롭게 녹아나는 작품은 쉽게 나오지 않을 겁니다. 패기 넘치는 연출, 장르 특유의 멋, 배우의 아우라를 다 갖춘 작품은 흔치 않지요. 그리고 이를 두루 갖춘 동방불패는 유일무이한 원형으로 남아있습니다. 한 영화가 이토록 오랜 시간을 견딜 수 있는 이유는 무엇일까요. 그 작품이 모든 시대를 관통해서일까요? 어떤 작품은 시간 속에 멈춰서 특정 시간을 늘 떠올리게 만듭니다. 칼을 물리치며 임청하가 수놓는 낭만은 아버지 삼촌 세대의 전유물이 아닙니다. 다음 세대들에게도 꾸준히 유효할 고전이자 20세기 말의 강렬한 증거입니다. @ 동방불패를 보면서 울 줄은 전혀 예상하지 못했습니다. 잘 읽었습니다. 어릴 때 컴퓨터 첨 살때 동방불패 영화 CD를 부록으로 줘서 유일하게 소장했던 영화 CD였는데... 수십번도 넘게 봤던 기억이 나네요.
