 멕시코 시티에서는 죽은 자들의 날 축제가 한창입니다. 정장 차림의 한 사내는 건물 위에서 몰래 한 인물을 추격하고, 이내 축제는 총격전에 휩쌓이죠. 쫓고 쫓기는 싸움은 헬기까지 번지고, 야수 같은 발길질로 기어이 목표물을 제거한 사내는 떨어질 뻔한 헬기를 간신히 착륙시킵니다. 그러나 이 사건은 대서특필되고, 그의 상관은 이를 추궁하지 않을 수가 없습니다. 그저 휴가 중 벌어진 사고였다며 미소로 입을 다무는 사내. 그는 어머니와도 같던 전임 상사가 죽기 전에 남긴 메시지를 따라갈 뿐입니다. 그렇게 나홀로 추격을 펼치던 중, 남자는 어떤 비밀 조직에 관한 정보를 입수하고 진실의 실마리가 어떤 실타래에서 나왔는지를 어렴풋이 확인합니다. 아직은 음영에 가려 얼굴이 보이지 않던 비밀조직의 수장이 회의를 멈추고 갑자기 인사를 건넵니다. “오랜만이네, 제임스 본드.” 007 <스펙터>는 다니엘 크레이그의 007 시리즈의 특징대로 전작인 <스카이폴>에서 그 내용이 이어집니다. 말로리가 새로운 M의 자리를 차지하고, Q와 머니페니도 이전처럼 본드의 곁을 지키고 있습니다. 그리고 여기에 새로운 드라마를 쓰기 위한 몇가지 설정이 더 붙었습니다. 어렸을 적 자신을 키워준 양아버지와 양형의 죽음이라는 본드의 개인사가 있고, 비밀요원 대신 드론과 정보 공유를 통해 혁신을 꾀하는 MI6의 조직적 갈등이 있죠. 퀀텀 오브 솔라스 초반부에서 도망쳤던 미스터 화이트는 본드가 쫓고 싶어하는 거대 조직의 정보원으로 다시 등장하고, 이 남자의 딸은 또 다른 정보원이자 자신이 지켜줘야 하는 존재가 됩니다. M이라는 정신적 지주를 잃었지만, 이에 대한 본드의 유대와 상실감은 그리 크게 나타나지 않는 편입니다. 출현이 예정된 캐릭터들을 가지고 연속되는 이야기를 시도하지만 <스펙터>는 아무래도 사족의 느낌이 강합니다. 이는 전작인 <스카이폴>이 007 시리즈를 전체적으로 종결지은 느낌이 강하기 때문이죠. 한번 죽었고, 간신히 돌아오지만 퇴물 취급을 받는 스파이, 인간에 기대는 고루한 시스템, 시스템 자체가 양산한 내부의 적, 늘 현재만이 드러나던 주인공의 과거, 007을 상징하던 한 캐릭터의 죽음, 이 속에서 007의 거대한 적은 또 다른 007이었고, 과거와 미래를 이야기하며 그 사이에 끼어있는 과도기적 존재인 자신을 돌아보는 이야기가 펼쳐집니다. 때문에 <스카이폴>을 보고나면 시리즈 전체의 커다란 변혁과 반성을 꾀한다는 느낌을 받게 됩니다. 가장 내밀한 곳의 이야기를 정리했고 그 속에서 죽음, 부활, 변화라는 거대한 흐름을 지나오기 때문에 이제는 완벽하게 새로운 이야기를 해야 하는 시점인거죠. 그런데 <스펙터>는 다시 과거로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 전편에서 했던 이야기를 다시 반복해요. M을 유사 어미로, 실바를 유사 형제로 해서 <스카이폴>은 혈통과 계승의 이야기를 끝마쳤습니다. 이는 제임스 본드라는 캐릭터의 개인사인 동시에, 그가 속한 조직이 어떤 방향을 추구해야 할지를 거시적으로도 그려내고 있었죠. 그럼에도 <스펙터>가 그리는 것은 또 다시 혈통과 계승의 이야기입니다. 전작에서 본드가 <스카이폴>이라는 자신의 원점으로 돌아갔고, 그 곳에서 과거의 연인, 과거의 둥지, 과거의 과오 그 모든 것으로부터 독립했는데도 말이죠. 단지 부계의 혈통을 새로 등장시키고 그 적에게 더 큰 권위를 줬을 뿐 <스펙터>는 전작과 큰 차별점이 없습니다. 전작에서 실바가 하던 역할을 프란츠(블로펠드)가, Q가 하던 역할을 댄비가, M이 하던 역할을 말로리가 하는 식으로 인물만 바뀔 뿐 전작을 자가복제한 형태로 갈등이 그려지죠. 이미 이야기가 끝난 시간축을 다시 한번 돌리는 바람에 <스펙터>의 이야기는 좀 구차해집니다. 모든 이야기가 다 끝난 줄 알았지만 사실은 다른 비밀이 따로 있었다! 그리고 본드는 아직도 갈등에 휩쌓여있다! 이미 한번 우려냈던 소재를 가지고 재탕을 하니 아무래도 보는 맛이 텁텁할 수 밖에 없죠. 때문에 촌극이 벌어집니다. 사실은 그랬던 것이다, 라는 대사가 본인의 입에서 직접 해명되는 것만큼 좀스러운 게 없는데도요. 전작과의 연계점을 만들기 위해 캐릭터가 구구절절 전작들을 들춰내는 수고를 하는 거죠. “그건 사실 내가 다 그랬던 거야”, “이들은 나의 부하들이었어”. 전작에 없는 복선을 만들기 위해 블로펠드는 직접 전작의 사건들을 나열하고 대사로 일일히 증명시킵니다. 여기에 반응하는 본드 역시도 뭔가 새삼스러워 보이죠. 이미 극복한 문제를 가지고 과민반응하기도 그렇고, 아무렇지 않은 척 하기에도 너무 초탈해보입니다. <카지노 로얄>에서 본드가 베스퍼를 잃은 아픔은 <퀀텀 오브 솔라스>(에필로그)에서 마무리가 되었습니다. 그리고 <스카이폴>에서는 본드가 자신의 정체성과 과거의 트라우마를 극복하는 이야기를 그렸죠. 전작과 연결된다는 부분은 시간적으로 이어지지만 그 갈등까지고 계속 품고 간다는 이야기는 아닙니다. 동일한 인물이 하나의 시간축에서 이어진다 할 지라도 이미 완료된 갈등은 접고, 새로운 문제를 이야기해야죠. 샘 멘데스가 왜 이렇게 “과거”라는 시점을 기준으로 리부트된 이야기를 출발시켰는지 이해하기 어렵습니다. 본드의 곁에는 새로운 사람들이 자리잡았고, 스펙터라는 새로운 적이 출현하고 있으니 “현재”와 “미래”를 시점으로 이야기 자체가 새로워질 수 있는 조건들을 다 갖춘 셈인데도요. 과거에 대한 강박은 엉뚱한 곳에서 표출됩니다. 전작부터 쌓아올린 현실성을 걷어차고, 기껏해야 선대 제임스 본드들처럼 멍청한 숫캐 노릇에 여념인 크레이그의 본드가 나타나죠. 이 전까지 제임스 본드의 바람둥이 기질은 스파이로서의 작전 수행이라는 최소한의 명목이 있었습니다. 여자를 유혹하는 과정은 제임스 본드라는 인물의 매력으로 납득이 되고, 하룻밤 염문보다는 작전이 주가 되는 진중함도 잃지 않았죠. <카지노 로얄>에서 솔레지와 밤을 보내는 건 정보를 얻기 위한 수단이었고, 두 사람 이를 모두 정확하게 인지하고 있었습니다. 베스퍼와의 연애는 처음으로 죽음의 위기를 경험한 그녀와, 그런 그녀를 지켜주고 희생한 본드의 활약이 일종의 기사도 공식으로 로맨스에 녹아났습니다. (이는 제임스 본드라는 인물의 상처로서, 한 인물을 이해하기 위한 중요한 재료이기도 합니다.) <퀀텀 오브 솔라스>에서 본드가 필즈 요원을 유혹했던 것은 감시자를 자기 편으로 회유하고, 상부의 압박으로부터 벗어나기 위한 외교적 수단이기도 했습니다. <스카이폴>에서 세버린에게 본드가 접근하는 것은 실바를 만나기 위한 접점이자, 인간적 교감으로의 과정으로 이해할 여지가 있었습니다. 그러나 <스펙터>는 변명의 여지가 거의 없어요. 일단 모니카 벨루치가 분한 루시아와 본드의 하룻밤은 눈요기 이상의 어떤 의미나 필요도 갖지 못합니다. 자신이 죽인 남자의 미망인과, 남편을 죽인 살인자 사이에 왜 저런 끈적끈적한 기류가 흐르는지, 그녀가 전해준 정보가 얼만큼 중요한지 납득이 되지 않죠. 그래서 모니카 벨루치라는 무게감 있는 배우는 본드의 원나잇 상대로 소모되고 맙니다. 레아 세이두가 맡은 메들린 스완 역시도 본드와 자연스럽게 교감하지 못합니다. 아버지를 죽인 사람과 사랑에 빠지게 되는 과정이 변덕스러워보이죠. 싸늘한 표정으로 거리감을 유지하다가 무슨 마음이 바뀌어서 기차 안에서는 그렇게 드레스를 빼입고 나타나서 다정한 대화를 나누는지, 암살자의 위협을 비켜나가자마자 왜 잠자리에 대한 충동이 폭발하는지, 왜 위험한 임무에 따라가겠다고 고집을 피우는지, 본드가 간접적으로나마 아버지의 죽음에 연루되어있다는 사실을 알면서도 아버지가 자살하는 영상에는 왜 그렇게 충격을 받는지, 기껏 살인자의 숙명을 뒤집어 쓴 본드를 피하려다가도 함께하게 되는지, 이 모든 것에 대한 설명이 부족합니다. 이렇게 여성 캐릭터를 어색하게 활용하는 것은 페미니즘에 입각한 정치적 올바름의 문제만은 아닙니다. 한 여자를 사랑했다가 잃었고, 그 과정에서 다른 사람도 희생시켰던 자신의 과오를 뉘우칠 줄 알았던 한 남자의 캐릭터가 붕괴되는 현상이 발생하기 때문이죠. 이제까지와는 다른 캐릭터의 모습 때문에 관객은 괴리감을 느끼게 됩니다. 이는 관객이 극에 몰입하기 위해 한결같아야 하는 캐릭터의 설득력 문제입니다. <스펙터>의 또 다른 문제점은 블로펠드가 본드를 괴롭히는 과정이 번거롭다는 데 있습니다. 물론 모든 관계가 자본주의 욕망과 효율성으로만 흘러가지는 않죠. 전작 <스카이폴>에서도 실바는 몇번이나 M을 죽일 수 있었지만 결국 실패했으니까요. 그러나 실바는 “한풀이”라는 자신의 목적이 있었고, 본드를 죽이는 것은 목적이 아니라 하나의 과정이었습니다. 본드가 궁지에 몰리자 너무 일찍 승리에 도취될만도 했어요. 그러나 블로펠드는 무엇 때문에 본드에게 그리 집착하는지 이해하기가 어렵습니다. 자신의 작전을 방해하는 숙적의 제거라면 계속해서 암살자를 보내든, 댄비를 통해 MI6를 점거하고 몰아내면 됩니다. 해후를 풀고 싶다면 요원 자리에서 박탈당한 뒤 무력해진 제임스 본드를 만나서 죽이면 되죠. 물리적으로나 정치적으로 블로펠드는 본드와는 비교할 수 없는 힘이 있고 이 적대적 관계에서 선택권은 블로펠드에게 있습니다. 그런데 왜 적이 그렇게 찾고자 하는 은거지를 일부러 알려주고, 거기로 초대를 해서, 자신의 정체와 목적을 낱낱히 설명한 후, 외과수술로 본드를 죽여야 하는지 명확한 이유가 없습니다. 본드에게 품은 원한의 종류도 모호하고 이를 실행하는 과정은 비효율적이며 과시적이에요. 결국 이야기가 진행될 수록 모든 음모의 근원이자 비밀 세력의 리더였던 블로펠드는 극 초반의 카리스마가 많이 깎여나갑니다. 정체가 밝혀진 후 자신의 입으로 주절거리며 이해를 돕는 장면이나, 허술한 계획, 실패를 거듭하는 복수와 어딘지 미묘한 스케일의 방해 공작들이 인물 자체를 허술하게 보이게 만들죠. 특히 마지막 장면에서 마델린을 인질로 벌이는 쇼는 작위적입니다. 과거의 인물 사진들을 일일히 프린팅 해 벽에 붙여놓는 것은 지나치게 정성스럽고 마델린의 위치가 그렇게 들통나게 놔둔 것은 너무 허술합니다. 권총 몇발에 타고 있던 헬기가 추락해 잡히는 장면은 이야기의 마무리로서 어떤 카타르시스도 제공하지 못합니다. 등장씬을 제외하면 새로운 적으로서 블로펠드는 그 위엄이 많이 떨어집니다. 제임스 본드 주변의 인물들은 나름의 역할을 하고 있습니다. 그러나 제임스 본드가 스펙터라는 거대 조직과 홀로 분투를 벌이는 이야기에 중심이 잡혀있기 때문에 아무래도 다른 인물들은 극에서 소외된 것처럼 보입니다. 바로 전편에서 강력한 정적으로 나오던 것을 보면 <스펙터>의 말로리는 너무나 무기력하고 머니페니와 Q 역시 주변에서 기능적으로만 활용되고 있죠. 예상을 벗어나지 않는 범주 내에서 묘사가 맴돌기 때문에 조미료 역할로서도 캐릭터들이 좀 싱거운 편입니다. 새로운 실권자로 등장한 댄비가 뻔한 악역으로 전락하면서 다른 인물들의 싸움 역시도 일종의 별책부록의 느낌이 더 강해지구요. 007 시리즈답게 눈호강은 시켜줍니다. 이국적인 풍경들과 인물을 채우는 공간은 그 자체로 아름답습니다. 그러나 이야기는 헐렁하고 제임스 본드라는 아이콘은 이전만큼 깊은 매력을 보여주지 못합니다. 액션 역시 치밀하지도 치열하지도 않네요. 이게 원래 007의 본질이자 한계라고 해도, <카지노 로얄>과 <스카이폴>이 거둔 성취는 돌연변이 취급을 당해야 하는 걸까요. 배우, 감독, 그리고 전작이 쌓아올린 주춧돌 위에서 이렇게 비틀대는 후속작을 보는 것은 안타까운 일입니다. <퀀텀 오브 솔러스>처럼, 이 역시 또 다른 명작을 위한 징검다리로 이해하는 것이 최선일 듯 합니다. @ 블로펠드를 너무 열심히 고증해서 좀 우습기까지 했네요. 그렇게 흉터까지 열심히 재현할거라면 왜 머리는 안 밀었는지. 아무튼 휠체어에 탄 블로펠드가 후속작에서도 본드를 괴롭힐 것은 유력해보입니다. @ 개인적으로 오프닝 크레디트만큼은 역대 최고라고 느꼈습니다. @ 블로펠드가 스펙터의 정보통제를 보여주는 장면은 CG 티가 너무 많이 나서 민망했습니다. @ 냉전 시대에 공공의 적을 만들기 위한 캐릭터였던 블로펠드를 이제 와서 재활용하는 건 시대적으로 좀 어폐가 있을 수 밖에요. 설마 후속작에서 우주선을 납치하는 건 아니겠죠. @ 이번 작품이 크레이그의 마지막 본드 출연작일수도 있다면, 다음에는 정식으로 007 후임자가 주인공의 위치를 물려받는 설정이 나왔으면 좋겠네요. 007 시리즈는 스카이풀이 처음이였는데 그 영상이며 스토리의 간결함에 극찬을 했고 당연히 이번 작품도 보게 되었습니다. 전작과 많이 다르다는 이야기를 들었지만 보고 싶은데 안 볼수가 없었죠.
보고 나니 영화가 어떻게 이렇게 방향이 확 바뀌어버린건지 실망스럽습니다. 인물의 행동에서 어떤 개연성도 느낄수가 없었어요. 오프닝부터 막장이더군요. 수 많은 축제 참가자들이 광장에 모여있는데 헬리콥터에서 그 위험한 장면을 만들고. 그러다 그 광장에 추락하기라도 한다면 피해가 엄청날탠데 그런 생각 전혀 없어보이더군요. 스카이풀에서는 사람 느낌이... 더 보기

심지어 스카이풀에서 숨을 멎게 만들었던 오프닝 곡이 나오는 화려한 영상 부분에서도 뭔 똥폼잡는 모습만 나오나싶고.. 전체적으로 실망이였습니다. 실망스럽다는 말을 몇번째 하는지 모르겠네요.
레아 세아두가 나온다고 해서 더 기대했는데 각본에 개연성이 없으니 배우들도 배역을 소화시키지 못하고 이렇게 레아 세아두의 진면목을 여러 관객들이 모르고 넘어가게 만들어서 정말 실망스럽습니다.
