모텔은 이런 곳이구나. 미지의 공간은 그렇게 정복되었다. 밖은 저렇게 환한데도 이 곳은 어슴푸레하고, 보라빛이고, 자주빛이고, 파랗게 눈부셨다. 30을 넘어서도 아직 두근댈 수 있는 어딘가가 남아있다는 건 좋은 걸까. 루브르 박물관은 언젠가 꼭 가보고 말리라 약속했던 곳이다. 교토의 금각사는 언젠가는 갈 수 있을거라 자신만만해했던 곳이다. 울룰루는 갈 수도 있기를 소망했던 곳이다. 그런데 나는 가능성은 커녕 의식 자체도 하지 못했던 공간에 발자국을 남기고 있다. 그러니까, 이런 게 모텔인거네. 불경했던 마음은 치기 어린 호기심에 야금야금 갉혀나간다. 닥터 존스, 존스, 콜미 닥터 존스. 언젯적 유행가인지도 모를 노래를 속으로 흥얼거리며 쭈뼛쭈뼛 나만 아는 캣워크를 그렇게 시전하고 있을 때 내 손을 덥썩 움켜쥐는 손아귀. 얘는 뭘 이렇게 씩씩거리며 진두지휘를 하려는 걸까. 아까 계산대에서 내 목소리가 살짝 떨리는 걸 눈치챘던건지. 예민한 아이니 그럴 수도 있고 둔감한 아이니 그렇지 않을 수도 있고. - 가요 안 가고 있었던 거 아닌데. 무안해서 내뱉은 소리라는 걸 500% 확신할 수 있다. 벌렁거리는 콧구멍이 그렇고, 하도 부릅떠서 “눈”이 아니라 “눈알”의 상태로 있는 게 그렇다. 꼭 이렇게 되도 않는 폼을 잡으며 뭔가를 어필하려고 하는데, 내가 받는 건 항상 반대의 무언가다. 믿어보라면 믿을 수가 없고, 걱정말라면 불안하고, 달콤하게 굴면 느끼하고 짭쪼름하고 징그럽고. 따뜻한 척은 어느 정도 한다. 감기 때문에 낯을 찌푸리고 다니던 어느날, 가방이 살짝 무거워 지퍼를 열어봤더니 재주도 좋게 사과를 넣어놨었다. 그리고 거기에는 포스트잇이 철썩, 하고 붙어있었다. 안 어울린다. 빨간 색에 노란 색. 입체에 평면. 동그란 거에 네모난 거. 그리고 그 위에 써져있는 “A apple A day”. 이게 이 아이의 한계다. 잘 해볼려고 하면 처음부터 우당탕이던지 중간에 가서 삐그덕이던지. 그러니까 그 마음이 얼마나 갸륵하건 “따뜻하다”라고 인정해 줄 수 없는 거다. 그래도 볼 때마다 슬쩍슬쩍 사과를 건네는 솜씨는 인정해서 “따뜻한 척”으로나마 봐주고는 있다. 몰라준다고 징징대긴 하지만 세상사가 어디 그렇게 쉽니. 어른한테 인정받는 거, 그거 그렇게 만만한 일이 아니야. 이 아이와 함께 하는 모든 것이 기어이 잘 되지 않을 것을 나는 믿을 수 있다. 그게 내가 이 아이를 만날 수 있는 이유다. 방문을 열고 들어간 그 곳은 내가 알던 세상의 연속이다. 방에서도 계속 수족관 같은 분위기가 나는 게 좋았을려나. 침대시트에 손바닥을 대고 양 옆으로 주욱 흝어보았다. 인공적인 향기가 난다. 맨살을 대는 게 그리 신이 나진 않겠지만 그래도 살균은 되어있구나. 오른쪽으로 시선을 돌려 베개를 찔러보는데 왼쪽에서 털썩 소리가 났다. 분식회계하다 체포된 경제범처럼 고개를 떨구고 이 아이가 앉아있었다. 이건 아까의 그 폼의 연장선상인 동시에 어쩔 줄 몰라하는 제스쳐다. 감추려 하면 할 수록 티가 나서 옆에 있는 사람도 괜히 반응하지 않을 수 없는 그런 대기를 형성하는 재주를 가지고 있는 것이다. 다른 사람이라면 거기에 휩쓸리겠지만 나는 다르다. 이런 종류의 사람을 보면 뭔가 안심이 되고 더 의연해지는 게 있다. 함께 당황하고, 함께 초조해하고, 함께 헤매야 할 때, 이 아이의 거대한 혼란은 나를 침착하게 만든다. 너는 허우적대지만 나는 헤엄을 치고 있으니까, 그렇게 유유히 우리는 함께 몸담고 있는 이 망망대해에서 어떤 방향 감각 없이도 어디론가 흘러갈 수 있는 거겠지. 이제 가라앉지 않도록 내가 뒤에서 안고 끌어줄 차례다. 갑자기 생긴 이 부력에 온 몸을 내맡기지 않도록, 조심스럽게, 차분히 제압하고 안심시켜야 한다. 자칫하면 나도 그 허둥거리는 물장구에 침몰할 수도 있다. 괜찮으니까, 너를 구해줄 사람이 여기 있으니까 일단 그 심각한 반응을 잠시 덜어내자고 나는 몸짓한다. 한없이 명랑한 나의 미소에 이 아이는 다시 구조되었다. 장난끼로 한껏 끌어올린 내 입가에 보조개가 파이면, 거기서 아이는 몸을 추스린다. 이제 괜찮아 라고 나는 말하지 않고 이제 괜찮아요 라고 이 아이도 대답하지 않는다. 그럴 필요는 없다. - 있잖아요 도대체가 애매모호한 호칭이다. 이 아이는 나의 이름을 감히 부르지 못한다. 나도 허락한 적은 없다. 그렇다고 누나라고 부르는 건 어쩐지 더 참을 수 없다. 키스하는 여자한테 누나라니, 용납할 수 없는 언사다. 그런다고 나이차가 좁혀지지도 않을 것이고. 어리숙해도 내가 동경하는 “싸내다움”은 좀 지켜줬으면. 나는 키스했던 남자들에게 “오빠” 따위의 단어를 쓴 적은 없다. 나를 탐하는 남자라면 나이불문 내 이름을 제대로 부르게 했다. 이 아이가 나의 원칙에 곧이 곧대로 부합하는 사람이었다면 나는 지금 여기서 눈 앞의 너와 이러고 있진 않았겠지만. 인생은 예외를 허락해야 할 필요도 있는 법이다. 어디 한번 놔둬보자 어디까지 가는지, 이랬던게 지금 고등학교 때까지 씨름부였다던 이 남자가 모텔 방에서 나한테 나즈막한 목소리로 말을 걸고 있는 이 상황까지 온 거다. 어쩌겠는가. 처음 인사를 할 때부터 지금까지 계속 이랬는데. 아무도 가리키지 않는 저 어리숙한 단어에 기대 이렇게 가까이 떠내려올 줄은 나도 몰랐다. 여하튼, 오늘이 지나면 이 문제에 대해 좀 진지하게 이야기를 해봐야 할 것 같다. 설마 둘 다 나체 상태에서 갑자기 누나란 단어로 나를 급습하지는 않겠지. 나를 쳐다본다. 또 대책없이 진지해질려고 하는 저 눈. 웃음이 나온다. 하고 싶은 말이 있냐고 묻자 다시 고개를 돌린다. 이 아이의 짧은 구레나룻을 손가락으로 집고 슬쩍 쓸어내렸다. 이러니까 내가 마치 이런 곳을 한 두번 와본 게 아닌 것 같다. 왜그래 하고 물으니까 어물거리다가 나를 다시 응시한다. - 원래 이런 데 오면 아무 말도 안하나요 그러니까 무슨 말이라도 좀 하라는 거구나. 내가 언제는 그렇게 말을 많이 했니. 핀잔을 주는 대신 오해하게 놔두라고 적당한 대답을 하나 흘린다. 뭐 그럴 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있고, 난 잘 모르겠는데. 들어온지 몇분이나 됐다고 이야기 타령인건지. 갑자기 도화선이 확 불붙는 것 같다. 말 없이 우리의 목적을 바로 수행해버릴까. 깨물기 좋게 생긴 귓볼을 한참 바라보다가 어른다워야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 고등학교 때 친구들이랑 같이 에로영화를 보면서 그렇게 웃어놓고는, 별로 다를 것도 없는 그림이 나올 뻔 했잖아. 시선은 목젖으로 옮긴 채, 우리가 있는 이 곳이 모텔이 아닌 것처럼 말한다. 그럼 무슨 이야기를 할까. 좀 놀리고 싶어진다. 만지는 건 좀 뒤로 미루고, 말로만 간지럽혀도 어쩔 줄 몰라하는 아이니까. 야한 이야기를 해야지. 그러면 조금 더 편안해질지도 모르고. 뭐가 됐든 지금보다는 낫겠다 싶어 물어본다. 혹시 야동 보고 연습한 건 아니지. - 보긴 봤어요..... 그랬구나. 웃으면 실례인데. 어찌됐건 예습을 하려는 이 자세는 기특하지 않은가. 그런데 멍청한 짓을 하는 건 아니겠지. 괜히 노력한다고 쓸데없는 곳을 쓸데없이 만지는 건 곤란한데. 그랬어? 라고 아무렇지 않게 대답하며 새어나오는 웃음을 앙다문 입에 가뒀다. 뭘 봤을까. 물어봐도 될려나. 대답을 들으면 뭔가 김이 샐 것 같다. 대화는 커피숍에서도 할 수 있다. 그리고 앞으로 더 재미있는 이야기들, 이 전까지는 못 하던 이야기들을 커피숍에서 낮은 목소리로 할 수 있을 것이다. 일단 여기는 이야깃거리를 만드는 곳이다. 그러니까 바보 같은 이야기는 그만 하는 게 좋다. 나 지금 너무 미소짓고 있는 것 같다. 이 아이는 뭔가 침울해보인다. 안되겠다. 먼저 씻을 거냐고 물었더니 의외의 대답이 돌아온다. - 먼저 씻으세요. 싸가지 없다. 이럴 때 질문하는 건 권유라는 걸 모르나보다. 언제 다 가르칠까. 먼저 씻으라고 직역해주었다. 부드럽고, 온화하게, 아프로디테의 허리띠를 차고 있는 것처럼. - 저....여자를 기다리게 하는 건 매너가 아니라서... 저는 금방 씻으니까요. 그러니. 참으로 신사로구나. 그래서 그 때는 내 시스루 옷을 그렇게 힐끔거렸었니. 그런데 여기서 자존심 싸움을 벌이면 내가 이상한 오해를 받을 가능성이 크다. 누가 먼저 샤워를 해야하는 건지 나도 아는 바가 없다. 여기서 내 주장을 굽혀야 할까. 그런데 내가 시키기 전에 먼저 씻어도 되냐고 이 아이가 나한테 물었으면 아마 허락을 했을까. 그래도 고민은 했을 것 같다. 아무튼 둘 다 샤워는 해야 한다. 나도 어떤 열기가 좀 올라오고 있어서 땀을 흘리는지 안 흘리는지 잘 모르겠으니까. 십중십십 이 아이는 땀을 흘리고 있을테고. 이왕에 껴안을거면 샤워한 뒤 기다리면서 다시 땀에 젖은 육체보다는, 갓 씻고 나온 뽀송뽀송한 육체가 낫겠지. 그래, 그럼 내가 먼저 씻지 뭐. 나는 다정하고 어른스럽게 대답하며 이 아이의 요청을 승인했다. 화장실의 노란 전등빛이 요사스럽게 쏟아진다. 어차피 화장은 거의 안했지만, 그래도 아예 쌩얼은 말도 안되고. 분홍색 욕조가 아주 커다랗다. 목욕탕 분위기가 난다. 수도꼭지가 큰 소리로 물을 뱉어내는 틈을 타서 앞뒤로 몸을 거울에 비춰본다. 쓸만한가? 어차피 "합"이라고 결제할 거면서 질문은 무슨. 아직 욕조 밑바닥을 맴도는 물에 손을 담가 온도를 확인해본다. 미적지근하다. 조금 더 뜨거워야한다. 밖의 저 아이를 너무 기다리게 하는 건 아닐까. 그렇지만 나 역시 마음의 준비가 필요해. 때를 불릴 때만 물 속에서 시간을 보내야 하는 건 아니다. 우리 모두는 어떤 순간을 위해, 살과 살이 부딪히고 때로는 아픔이 수반되는 그런 격렬한 경험을 하기 위해 한적하고 고요한 준비를 해야 한다. 입욕제를 풀었다. 발을 담그고 미끄러져 내려간다. 입수 완료. 미안, 조금만 있어봐. 이렇게 소리치는 내가 너무 천연덕스럽게 들리는 건 좀 싫다. 얼마나 시간이 지났나. - 저 들어가요~~~~~~~!!! 벌컥 문이 열렸다. 엄청난 거구의 나신이 샤워실을 덮쳤다. 아아악!! 왼손으로는 상체를, 오른손으로는 눈을 가리고 턱 언저리까지 몸을 거품 속으로 숨기며 소리를 질렀다. 갑자기 화장실이 어두침침한 보라빛으로 뒤덮였다. 녹색의 물고기들이 보라빛 벽위를 천천히 헤엄친다. 나가라고 계속 소리를 치면서 손가락 틈으로 상황파악을 시도한다. 화장실 조명도 바뀌는 거였구나. 스위치 근처에서 뒤로 돌아서 쩔쩔 매고 있는 그 얘가 보인다. 다행히 수건으로 밑을 가리고 있어주니 내 시선이 편안하다. 나가!! 나가!! 안나가?
