"약함"과 "예고장" 잘 알려지지 않았지만, 천사소녀 네티(괴도 세인트 테일)에는 나름 "공식"딱지가 붙은 후속작이 있습니다. 코단샤에서 직접 그림 업로드 사이트인 픽시브를 통해 응모전을 열어서 작가를 모집했습니다.  이게 응모전 당시의 배너입니다. 2017년에 열린 응모전에서 대상을 받은 야모리 시키(やもり四季)라는 작가를 통해 연재가 되었죠. 응모전 당시 조건은 세가지인데 1. 주인공은 불쌍한 사람을 돕는 괴도이고, 사욕을 위해 도둑질을 해서는 안된다 2. 주인공의 능력은 타고난 신체능력과 물려받은 마술 3. 세인트 테일이니까, "테일(꼬리)"이 있어야 함 이게 가장 중요한 조건이었습니다. 그렇게 2018년 9월부터 연재가 시작되었구요, 제목은 "괴도 세인트 테일 girls!" 였습니다. 약 4화 분량(보니까 한 350페이지 정도 됩니다.)으로 연재가 마무리된 상태입니다. 2019년 10월경에 전자책으로 출판되어서 지금도 이런저런 일본의 전자책 사이트를 통해 구매할 수 있습니다.  음, 근데 원작이 상당한 인기작이었음에도 불구하고 후속작은 별달리 알려진 게 없죠? 그다지 성공하지 못했습니다. 원작 팬층에게 외면받았고 새로운 독자층을 확보하는 데에도 실패했죠. 이번엔 바로 이 "원작 팬층"의 한 사람으로서 이 "괴도 세인트 테일 girls!"를 직접 읽어보고, 이 작품이 왜 원작 팬층에게 어필하지 못했는지 한번 살펴보고자 합니다. 한국인 중에 이 작품을 읽어본 사람이 몇명이나 될지 모르겠군요(...). 아주 철저하게 원작 팬층의 시각이라, 작품에 대한 온당한 평가는 아닐 것 같습니다. 이 리뷰에서는 제가 굳이 "천사소녀 네티"가 아니라 "세인트 테일"이라고 지칭을 하겠습니다. 그래야 마음이 좀 덜 아플거 같아서...ㅠㅠ - 등장인물 소개 레귤러라고 할 만한 등장인물은 4명입니다.  먼저 주인공이라고 할 수 있는 하자키 히지리(羽崎 聖)입니다. 성 폴리아 학교(원작의 그 학교입니다.) 고등부 1학년입니다. 활기찬 성격의 여자아이고, 뛰어난 신체능력을 갖추고 있습니다. 어려서부터 세인트 테일을 동경해서 그런 영웅(작품에 히어로 라고 지칭됩니다.)이 되고 싶은 마음을 갖고 있습니다. 어느날 지각해서 지름길을 찾다가 조용한 성당을 보게 되고, 거기서 수녀님(세인트 아님)을 만나 세인트 테일의 역할을 부여받습니다.  다음으로 부 주인공이라고 할 수 있는 쿠로사와 노아(黑澤 のあ)입니다. 세인트 테일로서 의뢰를 받은 히지리가 처음 현장에 당도했을 때, 이미 세인트 테일로서 먼저 와서 활동하고 있었습니다. 알고보니 세인트 테일로 의뢰를 받은건 두 사람이었고, 둘은 세인트 테일 후보생이었던 거죠. 교내에 성격 안좋기로 명성이 자자한 쿠로사와 재벌의 외동딸입니다.  라이벌 캐릭터인 학생회장 나나오 타이가(七緖 大雅)입니다. 경찰 고위직의 아들이고, 꽃미남으로 유명하고, 학생 탐정단을 이끌고 있습니다. 주인공을 새끼원숭이(子ザル) 라고 부릅니다.  이름이 나오지 않는 수녀님(세인트 아님)입니다. 의뢰를 받아서(?) 아이들에게 미션을 내립니다. - 메인 스토리  작품의 첫 시작은 이렇게 주인공의 "세인트 테일"에 대한 동경을 보여주며 시작합니다. 주인공인 하자키 히지리는 늦잠꾸러기로 지각횟수 부동의 1위입니다. 어느날 지각 위기에 처하자 빠르게 가기 위해 지름길을 찾는데, 거기서 옛 교회(모양새를 보니 아마 세인트가 있던 그 성당인듯 합니다)를 찾아냅니다. 방과후에 신기해서 찾아가본 그곳에서 수녀님(세인트 아님)을 만나게 됩니다. 수녀님은 세인트 테일이 되어 사기당해 넘어갈 위기에 처해 있는 학교의 마리아상을 훔쳐달라는 의뢰를 합니다. 세인트 테일을 평소 서민들의 영웅으로서 동경하던 히지리는 의뢰를 받아들여 세인트 테일로서 예고장을 날리고, 예고한대로 저녁에 마리아상을 훔치러 갑니다. 여기엔 학교탐정단의 수장인 학생회장 타이가가 이미 진을 치고 있었죠. 그런데, 이미 한명의 세인트 테일이 와 있습니다? 이 다른 세인트 테일이 마리아상을 성공적으로 훔쳐 달아나는데, 이 마리아상은 타이가가 설치한 트랩이었습니다. 이 트랩이 터져서 다른 세인트 테일이 잡히려는 찰나에 히지리가 달려들어 구하게 됩니다. 이렇게 마리아상을 훔치는 것은 실패하고, 교회로 돌아간 두 사람은 서로 티격거리고, "둘은 후보생이고, 마리아상을 훔치는 데 성공한 사람이 진짜 세인트 테일이 된다"는 얘기를 듣게 되죠. 다음날 알고보니 다른 세인트 테일은 성격 더럽기로 유명한 재벌집 따님인 쿠로사와 노아였습니다. 반갑게 말을 걸어 보지만 우린 경쟁중이라는 차가운 대답만 돌아오죠. 어떻게 이길까 고민하던 히지리는 의뢰인인 마리아상의 기부자가 마리아상을 가로채려는 사람에게 무시당하는 것을 목격하고, 분노를 참지 못하고 킥을 날립니다. 이 일로 인해 경찰서까지 가지만, 타이가에게 "덕분에 시원했다"는 평을 듣게 되죠. 기부자에게 관련된 사연을 들은 히지리는 노아에게 달려가 고개를 숙이며 "내가 진 것으로 해도 좋으니 협력해서 마리아상을 꼭 찾자"고 읍소합니다. 노아 역시 의뢰인이 우선이라는 것에 동의하고, 둘은 한 팀으로서 협력하게 됩니다. 변신 후 머리를 맞대고 "우리들에게 신의 가호가 있기를(=저희들이 불쌍한 사람들을 도울 수 있게 힘을 주세요)"이라고 기도한 두 사람은 함께 사건을 해결합니다. 이후 둘은 두건 정도의 사건을 더 해결하게 되고, 만화는 마무리가 됩니다. - 장점 두 여자주인공은 꽤 예쁘고 귀엽습니다. 원작자 타치카와 메구미의 그림체는 제가 개인적으로 너무도 사랑하지만 요즘 먹힐만한 그림체인지는 잘 모르겠는데, 이 작품은 꽤 깔끔한 요즘 화풍으로 그려져 있지요. 그런 점에서는 확실히 현대화된 느낌이 듭니다. - 이건 "세인트 테일"이 아니야 먼저 밑밥을 좀 깔고 들어가겠습니다. 저의 이 평가는 2023년에 작성된 것이고 만화가 발매됐던 2018년도 기준으로 생각하면 부당한 평가일 수 있습니다. 양지해 주시길 부탁드립니다. 음, 제가 참 이런 말 하기 뭐하지만 저는 근자의 오타쿠 문화에 그다지 익숙한 사람이 아닙니다. 괴도 세인트 테일이 처음 연재를 시작한 94년엔 지금과 같은 인터넷 세대의 오타쿠 문법이 등장하지 않은 상태였고요. 물론 당시에도 오타쿠와 오타쿠 문법은 있었죠. 하지만 세인트 테일의 연재지였던 나카요시는 "소녀 만화"의 본진이었고 당시 남성 위주의 오타쿠들과는 거리가 있는 상태였습니다. 현대에는 오타쿠 문법이 상당히 자리가 잡혀 있고, 오타쿠식 클리셰도 꽤 정착을 한 상태입니다. 제가 왜 이런 얘기를 하느냐 하면, 이 오타쿠 테이스트가 바로 "괴도 세인트 테일"과 "괴도 세인트 테일 girls!"의 결정적인 차이점이기 때문입니다. 먼저 위의 주요 등장인물을 보면, 이것은 국밥과도 같은 설정이죠. 고등학교 배경의, 활발하고 조금 평범한 느낌의 정의감이 강한 주인공과, 재벌집 고명딸인 조금 싸가지 없는 부 주인공, 그리고 잘생기고 엄친아인 학생회장 남자 캐릭터(주인공이라고 하기엔 좀 부족한 느낌입니다.). 이 설정만 봐도 우리는 스토리를 짤 수 있습니다. 처음에 틱틱거리던 부 주인공은 정의감 넘치고 활발한 주인공에게 감화되어 츤츤거리면서 우정과 신뢰를 쌓을 것이고, 우리의 엄친아 학생회장은 주인공과 이상하게 친근해지면서, 주인공을 이상한 칭호로 부르면서 신경쓰게 될 겁니다. 주인공은 넘치는 혈기를 주체 못해서 사고를 치고, 이것을 통해 학생회장의 관심을 끌게 될 것이구요. 부 주인공은 이상하게 적극적인 주인공을 이상하게 생각하지만, 나도 모르게 얼굴을 붉히면서 가까워지는 모습도 보여주겠죠. 어쩌면 부 주인공도 학생회장을 좋아할 수 있지만, 어쩔 수 없이 인정하고 넘어가는 장면이 있을지도 몰라요. 또 우리가 쉽게 떠올릴 수 있는 장면들, 주인공이 억울한 일을 당할때 부 주인공이 본인을 "아가씨"라고 부르는 집사(이런 캐릭터도 물론 있습니다.)를 불러서 돈의 힘으로 해결하는 장면이 나올지도? 부 주인공이 학생회장을 신경쓰는 설정이나 돈과 권력을 발라서 사건 해결하는 장면은 없지만, 이건 만화가 대충 네권 정도만에 종료되어서가 아닐까 싶기도 합니다. 앞에 말씀드린 것들이 그대로 나와요. 두 사람은 팀업을 하게 되고, 부 주인공은 츤츤거리지만 우정과 신뢰를 쌓고, 학생회장은 주인공을 "새끼원숭이"라고 부르고, 주인공이 혈기를 주체 못해서 사고를 치지만 학생회장이 그 점을 마음에 들어합니다. 주변 반 친구들은 "너 저 선배랑 친해?! 세상에!!" 같은 반응을 보입니다. 주연들은 저 설정 들었을 때 우리가 상상할 수 있는 성격에서 눈꼽만큼도 벗어나지 않습니다. 여기에 "괴도 세인트 테일"이 들어갈 자리가 없습니다. 굳이, 세인트 테일이 아니라도 될 것 같아요. - 쪼금 더 개인의 팬심으로 징징대는 이야기 사실 원작의 주인공 세 명은 그리 "이 점이 대단하다!"는 강렬한 얘기가 명시되지는 않았어요. 물론 각자 능력은 대단하죠, 근데 그게 은연중에 스토리와 함께 나타나지 처음 등장부터 "모두의 주목을 받는 엄친아!"라든가 "재벌가문의 유일한 후손!" 뭐 그런 명시적인 설정으로 나타나는건 아니거든요. 최소 겉보기엔 그냥 동네 사는 애들이죠. 근데 이 작품에서는 그냥 나올때부터 "얘는 이런 점이 대단하다!" 를 그냥 박고 시작해요. 뜀뛰기로 창문 등교하는 주인공라든지, 재벌집 고명딸이면서 엄청난 미인인 부 주인공이라든지, 학생회장으로 엄청난 엄친아에 경찰 고위간부의 아들로서 탐정단을 이끄는 남자 캐릭터라든지 말이죠. 이런 캐릭터에서 저같은 옛날 사람은 몰입도를 느끼기 어렵더라구요. 그리고 막상 음, 이 막강한 설정에 비해 세인트 테일로서의 능력은 부족하기 그지 없습니다. 원작의 세인트 테일은 평소엔 운동 좀 잘 하는 아이지만 세인트 테일로서 마술을 부릴땐 사실상 마법에 준하는 능력을 쓰는데, 얘들은 마술 쓰는거 딱 두 컷인가 나오는데, 뭐 그냥 그래요. 그냥 첩보물 같은 느낌이 더 강합니다. 그래도 원작은 마법소녀로 분류되는 작품이었는데...그 원작의 묘한 판타지가 잘 느껴지질 않아요. 개인으로는 한없이 약하지만 "세인트 테일"로서는 강한 마음을 가졌던 원작의 주인공과 굉장히 대비되는 느낌이거든요. 평소엔 초인적인 신체능력이나 재벌집 딸 같은 재력이 있지만 세인트 테일 되긴 좀 멀었다 싶은...? 그리고 일단 "의뢰인"이라는 단어를 작품 내에서 쓰면 안 되지 싶은데, 이런 단어를 쓰다 보니 수녀님(세인트 아님)이 너무 강렬하게 양면적인 느낌이 나요. 일단 처음부터 세인트 테일 후보자 두 명을 동시에 현장으로 보냈다는 것도 그렇고, 나중에 "나는 너희가 우정을 쌓을 줄 알았단다^^"식으로 나오는 것도 그렇고 좀 쎄한 느낌이 들더라구요. 수녀님 좀더 홀리한 느낌으로 좀 만들어주지 싶기도 해요. 또 이건 아주 개취인데, 제가 견디기 힘든건...  이런 분위기를 못 견디겠더라구요. 원작의 설레는 로맨스는 다 클리셰화된 로맨스로 바뀌었고, 백합 냄새까지 은은하게 나는 씬이 있다보니, 이게 저는 제일 견디기가 어려웠습니다. 백합을 싫어해서가 아니라 "괴도 세인트 테일"이라는 이름이 붙었으니까요. "괴도 세인트 테일"은 기본적으로 따뜻한 느낌이 있는 이야기이죠. 마치 크리스마스 이브에 따뜻한 집에서 쿠키와 케이크를 만들어 놓고 함께 나눠먹을 연인을 기다리는 듯한 그런 따뜻하고 설레는 이미지가 제가 가진 작품에 대한 이미지이고, 그런 느낌이 제가 팬이 된 이유입니다. "괴도 세인트 테일 girls!"는 그런 이야기를 만들지 않았습니다. 실패한건지, 아니면 의도적인 건지는 모르지만 원작의 팬들에게 인정받기는 어려워 보입니다. 세인트 테일의 코스프레를 하고 의적활동을 한다고 그게 세인트 테일이라고 생각했다면, 음 그건 굉장히 일부분이죠. 이걸 읽으면서 점점 마음이 아프다는 느낌이었어요. "괴도 세인트 테일"의 다른 얘기는 이제 없는건가, 지금의 서브컬쳐 토양에서는 더이상 나올 수 있는 작품이 아닌건가 라는 의심을 한장 한장 넘기면서 사실로 확인하는 느낌이라고 할까요. 작품 자체가 잘못 나왔다는 얘기가 아닙니다. 이게 주목을 못 받았을 뿐이지, 요즘에는 더 먹히는 좋은 얘기일 수 있어요. 근데 여기서는 제가 찾던 그 느낌을 정말, 깨끗하게 하나도 찾을 수 없다는 것이죠. 저는 그 점이 참으로 아립니다. - 총평 오타쿠 테이스트로 재해석한 세인트 테일은 굳이 "세인트 테일"일 필요가 없었다.
