<이건 제가 제일 좋아하는 BGM, "성 폴리아 학원"입니다. 보통 끝나는 시점에 자주 나와요.> --------------------------- 성적 긴장감은 남녀 주인공 사이에 이끌림이 충족되지 않을 때 발생한다. 여기서 중요한 단어는 ‘충족되지 않는’이다. 그들이 서로 이끌리는 대로 행동할 수 없는 이유는 무엇인가? 그들이 함께하지 못하는 이유는 무엇인가? 그 이유가 강력할수록 감정적으로 더욱 몰입할 수 있는 이야기가 된다. - 리 마이클스 "로맨스로 스타 작가" --------------------------- 제가 탐라에서도 몇번 말씀드렸지만 27년 전 컨텐츠에 꽂히면 답도 없습니다. 할 수 있는게 몇개 없거든요. 기껏해야 텀블벅에 나온 굿즈나 지르고 곧 나온다는 넨도로이드나 지르고 이게 다지요. 역시 정의로운 도둑이시라서 무고한 사람의 지갑을 잘 지켜주시는군요(...). 샐리 누님 현역이시던 시절에 꽂혔다고 해도 "여아용 컨텐츠"라는 한계 때문에 제가 할 수 있는게 별로 없었겠지만, 사실 그땐 그냥 좋아하기만 하고 그렇게 빡세게 꽂히진 않았었어요. 애가 뭘 알았겠습니까, 그냥 예쁘고 사랑스러운 누나에 지나지 않았을테니까요.  <"예쁘고 사랑스러운 누나들"> 이 만화에 꽂힌 다음에, 이 서사가 끝났다는 것이 너무 아쉬워서 유사한 뭘 찾아보려고 순정만화들 여러 편 찾아봤지만 대체재를 찾기가 어렵더라구요. 처음에 강렬하게 꽂혔을때의 그 마음은 좀 가시고 나서, 그리고 완전히 가시기 전에, 제가 왜 27년이나 지나고 진부하기 그지없는 이 로맨스 서사에 꽂혔는가, 대체 이 만화의 매력은 무엇인가, 나를 환장하게 만든 것은 어떤 포인트인가를 한번 정리해보고자 합니다. 말하자면 일종의 덕질 백서라는 것이죠. 아마 글 한편으론 좀 부족하지 싶고, 몇 편 정도 되지 않을까 싶네요. 오늘은 첫째 편으로, "원작 만화처럼 로맨스 즐기기" 가이드가 되겠습니다. 이 글은 아직 본격적으로 무엇을 얘기하고자 하는 건 아닙니다. 말 그대로 원작 만화같은 감성으로 로맨스를 즐기려면 어떻게 보면 좋을까?라고 보시면 될거같아요. 넓게 보면 영업글일 수도 있겠군요 ㅎㅎ 제가 진짜 꽂힌 것은 사실 원작 "괴도 세인트 테일" 만화입니다. 그리고 이것을 화면으로 훌륭하게 투사한 것이 "천사소녀 네티" 애니메이션이라고 할 수 있습니다. 27년이 지난 컨텐츠이니 지금 보면 여러모로 약간 구세대적인 감성이 남아있긴 하지만, 그래도 저는 굉장히 재미있게 볼 수 있었습니다. 여전히 음악도 좋구요. 이 만화는 다른 마법소녀나 괴도물과 약간 다릅니다. 예를들어 같은 잡지 선후배작인 세일러문이나 카드캡터 체리의 경우 "마법소녀"라는 것이 우선입니다. 로맨스는 양념이죠. 직접적인 모티브로 거론되는 "캣츠 아이"는 "괴도"라는 것이 우선이구요. 하지만 이 만화는, "로맨스"가 우선입니다. 네티라는 페르소나, 샐리의 캐릭터성, 셜록스와의 라이벌 구도 등등이 모두 샐리-셜록스 커플의 로맨스를 위한 서사적 도구로 활용되니 말이죠. 이 만화에서 정말 진하게 나타나는 내용, 로맨스 서사의 핵심 소재는 "짝사랑에 빠진 소녀"입니다. 외전까지 27편 중 프롤로그 한 편, 외전 두 편을 제외한 24편은 전부 이걸 묘사하는 데에 아낌없는 투자를 했습니다. "이 만화가 무슨 짝사랑?"이라고 생각하시는 분들 많을 텐데, 이 만화에서 샐리라는 캐릭터를 구성하는 가장 큰 부분이 바로 이 짝사랑입니다. 이거 커플 만화 아니야? 생각하시는 분들 많으시겠지만, 실제로 샐리가 셜록스와 맺어지는 것은 최후반부입니다. 하지만 샐리가 셜록스를 좋아하게 되는 것은 극초반부죠. 이 기간 내내 샐리는 최소 자신의 인지 상으로는 짝사랑을 합니다. 그리고 여기서 발생하는 불안감을 어떻게 표현하고 해소하는가, 이것이 "천사소녀 네티"에서 나타나는 로맨스 서사의 핵심이죠.  <극중 가장 많이 이용되는 표현, 눈물과 동공지진> 물론 당시 초중교 학생들의 국민 첫사랑이 괜히 된게 아니듯이 샐리라는 캐릭터 자체도 매우 사랑스러운 캐릭터죠. 하지만 이 캐릭터의 매력과 로맨스 서사에 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 것이 이 "짝사랑에 빠진 소녀"의 모습입니다. 이 짝사랑이 극중에서 어떤 양상으로 나타나는지는 다음 글에서 좀 더 자세히 설명하도록 하겠습니다. 오늘은 "원작 만화처럼" 보기 위한 가이드니까요. --------------------------- 사실 천사소녀 네티의 원작 만화와 애니메이션 사이에는 큰 괴리가 없는 편입니다. 원작 만화에 있는 내용들을 상당히 충실하게 재현했죠. 다만 우리가 애니메이션 "천사소녀 네티"를 원작 만화 "괴도 세인트 테일"의 감성으로 즐기는 데에 두 가지의 소소한 걸림돌이 있습니다. 1. 애니메이션 오리지널 에피소드 원작 "괴도 세인트 테일"은 4화짜리 단편 만화였습니다. 그러다가 인기를 끌어서 24편짜리 중편이 됐습니다. 나중에 추가로 외전 3화가 더해져서 총 27화의 에피소드로 이루어져 있습니다. 외전은 애니화가 되지 않았죠. 아마 애니메이션화와 중편화가 비슷하게 결정이 되지 않았을까 싶은데요, 많은 일본 애니메이션이 그렇듯이 이 만화도 연재 중간에 애니메이션이 본작의 연재속도를 따라잡았습니다. 그래서 애니메이션 오리지널 에피소드가 19편 있습니다. 이 오리지널 에피소드들은 거의 다 우리가 아는 천사소녀 네티의 패턴(성 폴리아 학교 에피소드 → 피해자의 구원요청 → 예고장 → 네티의 사건해결 → 다음엔 잡고 말겠다! → 학교에서 모르는 척 셜록스에게 말걸기)에서 크게 벗어나지 않아요. 다만, 이 오리지널 에피소드 중 요즘 말로 "캐붕"이 있다는 게 로맨스 서사에 조금 방해가 됩니다. 위에서 설명드렸듯이, 샐리는 "짝사랑에 빠진 소녀"의 모습을 항상 나타냅니다. 이것을 유지하기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 셜록스가 "마음을 드러내지 말아야 할 것"이 중요하죠. 설령 드러냈다고 하더라도 그냥 샐리가 두근거릴 정도로만, 엄청나게 미묘하게 드러냅니다. 그래서 샐리 입장에서 그게 아니었다는 사실을 지레짐작을 하든 해서 "짝사랑"을 유지합니다. 이거 심지어 고백받아 사귀고 나서도 이 "짝사랑 포지션"이 계속 유지됩니다. 샐리가 둔감하다고 하는 분들도 계신데, 저는 동의를 못하겠습니다. 반대로 셜록스는 진짜 둔한 놈이 맞구요. 꼭 네티 모습이 아니라도 그렇게 갖은 방법으로 호감을 드러내는데 이놈이...본인 말고는 다들 아는구만... 근데 애니메이션 오리지널 에피소드 중 26화(샐리가 약혼을 한다구?)에서 이 포지션이 정통으로 깨집니다. 너무 대놓고 마음을 드러내요. 그래서 저는 이 에피소드를 개인적으로 싫어합니다. 그리고 다른 에피소드들 중에서는 둘 간의 로맨스를 아예 다루지 않는 것들도 있고 해서, 진짜 "로맨스"에 집중하려면 애니 오리지널 에피소드들은 제외하는 것도 괜찮다고 생각합니다. 약간 시간을 질질 끄는 느낌이 있거든요. 매번 셜록스는 어떨까? → 여전히 네티 일편단심이구나 어쩌지...(?)아니면 다행이야(?) 정도의 느낌이라서요. 다만, 저 에피소드, 26화는 보지 마세요! 으악! 2. 로컬라이징 과정에 있어서의 검열 주요 캐릭터들만 봤을 때, KBS의 더빙 자체는 정말로 훌륭합니다. 거의 30년이 지금까지도 성우의 대표작으로 회자되는 안경진 성우의 샐리는 저한테는 샐리를 이것보다 더 잘할 수 있을까? 재더빙을 한다면, 다른 분의 샐리를 받아들일 수 있을까? 싶을 정도이고, 제가 네티를 다시 보게 만든 원동력이기도 하죠. 하지만 검열은 얘기가 좀 다릅니다. 천사소녀 네티는 96년도라는, 아직 검열이 숨쉬던 시기에 무려 KBS에서 방영된 작품입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 만화 자체에 선정적이거나 불량하거나 폭력적인 내용은 거의 없기 때문에, 비교적 낮은 수준의 검열로 넘어갔습니다. KBS의 천사소녀 네티는 핵심적인 캐릭터나 서사 자체를 뒤틀 정도로 검열당하진 않았어요. 물론 정말 아쉬운 것도 많아요. 하지만 "작품 전체의 생명"은 여전히 남아있습니다. 다만, KBS는 최종화를 제외하고 "두 중학생의 연애"를 최대한 배제하기 위해 많은 노력을 했습니다. 그런 뉘앙스가 있는 단어들을 적극적으로 배제했어요. 심지어 이것때문에 최후반 중요 에피소드 한개가 통째로 날아가기도 했습니다. 이것이 굉장히 아쉬운 부분입니다. 그 에피소드가 살아있다면 정말 좋았을텐데 말이죠... 대표적으로, 리나가 중간에 셜록스에게 건 내기의 진짜 내용은 "샐리가 네티가 맞다면, 너랑 나랑 사귀자"였는데, 이걸 조금 틀어서 "샐리가 네티가 맞다면, (네티를) 내가 잡겠다." 정도로 바뀌었죠. 물론 "네티를 잡는다"라는 행위의 진짜 의미를 따지자면 비슷한 일이겠지만 KBS의 검열 방향을 알 수 있는 대사중 하나입니다. 이것 말고도 미묘하게 틀어놓은게 많습니다. 이것만 따로 정리할 수 있을 정도로 말이죠? 물론 이것을 감안해도 더빙판으로 이 로맨스의 핵심을 즐기는 것이 불가능하진 않습니다. 짝사랑에 빠진 소녀가 워낙 잘 표현되어 있어서요. 그래도 아쉬운 부분이 많습니다. 아니 중학생들은 연애하면 안된다니 그게 말이 됩니까. 물론 저는 그 나이때에 못했지만.  <"누구한테 잡혀야 한다면 셜록스 너한테 잡히고 싶어"> --------------------------- 그렇다면, 원작과 매칭되는 에피소드는 어떤 게 있는지 확인해 보겠습니다. 1화(천사소녀 네티 등장!) - 1화(귀여운 도둑) 2화(예고장과 도전장!) - 2화(시계탑의 비밀) 3화(여자의 마음) - 국내 미방영. 여기서 샐리가 셜록스한테 홀랑 넘어가 있다는 걸 알 수 있습니다만, 크게 아쉽진 않습니다. 그거는 그 뒤로도 매 편 알 수 있거든요. 4화(약속) - 4화(화이트 크리스마스) : 일본 기준으로는 12화인데, 우리나라는 크리스마스에 맞춰 4화로 방영했습니다. 다행히 원작 순서라서 큰 문제는 없었습니다. 원작은 원래 여기까지인 단편이었고, 인기를 끌어서 연재가 연장됩니다. 5화(네티의 첫 데이트) - 5화(인형도둑) 6화(체리 블로섬) - 6화(새로운 라이벌) : 리나가 여기서부터 등장합니다. 7화(눈물의 보물 전시회) - 7화(네티의 위기) 8화(정말 좋아해!) - 8화(아더의 글러브) 9화(웨딩 리허설) - 9화(유리와 드레스) 10화(셜록스의 아주아주 길었던 하루) - 10화(천사소녀의 고백) : 개인적 최애 장면이 있는 에피소드 11화(다이아몬드와 밤하늘과 고슴도치) - 3화(고슴도치 루비) : 포동포동 고슴도치 귀여운 루비는 원작에선 중반 쯤부터 나옵니다. 애니메이션에선 극초반부터 나오죠. 12화(체인징 파트너) - 11화(축제 대소동) : 마리오가 여기서부터 등장합니다. 13화(거울 속의 샐리) - 12화(신비한 거울) 14화(크리스마스 선물) - 18화(혜성 대소동) 15화(스노 드롭스의 마법) - 23화(향수의 비밀) 16화(비밀의 발렌타인) - 30화(루비가 인형이라구) 17화(스타는 누구?!) - 27화(샴푸 모델 경연대회) 18화(두 사람의 소야곡-전편) - 28화(시장의 음모 - 상) 19화(두 사람의 소야곡-후편) - 29화(시장의 음모 - 하) 20화(바다로 돌아간 진주) - 37화(돌고래를 구하라) 21화(보물은 바로 곁에) - 38화(엄마의 비밀) 22화(판도라의 소녀) - 국내 미방영 : 안돼 망할 ㅠㅜ 23화(거울 속의 진실) - 39화(로즈마리의 음모) 24화(라스트 매직) - 40화(셜록스를 구하라) 아래 외전은 애니화되지 않았습니다. 번외1 - 천사소녀 네티 탄생 : "천사소녀 네티의 복장은 샐리의 마술 무대 의상"이라는 설정이 나옵니다. 번외2 - 크리스마스 선물 : 여기서 본편에 없던 두 사람의 키스(뽀뽀?)신이 나옵니다. 만화에서 제 최애 에피소드입니다. 번외3 - 세인트와 마리오 : 마리오가 이미지 세탁하는 편이라고 해야할까요 ㅎㅎ 세인트가 엄청 예쁘게 나오죠. 이 에피소드들만 찾아보셔도, 핵심적인 전개는 빠지지 않고 보실 수 있습니다.
