5년 전에 썼던 서평인데.. 약간 표현만 다듬어서 올려봅니다. 두 번 읽기는 애매한 책인데, 한 번 읽을 때 나름 제 인생의 변곡점을 만든 책입니다. ----------------- 0. 스무살 지방에서 통학하던 시절이었다. 강변역과 동서울터미널 사이의 건널목에는 항상 하얀색 박스를 목에 건 중년이 신호등 근처에서 서성이고 있었다. 그는 초췌한 몰골과 꺼뭇한 피부색을 통하여 자신이 고난한 삶을 살고 있다는 것을 온몸으로 주장하고 있었다. 하얀색 박스에는 ‘모금함’이라는 큼지막한 궁서체와 함께 어딘지 모를 단체 이름이 쓰여 있었다. 밀레니엄과 Y2K 물결이 흘러가던 그 때의 천 원은 지금의 천 원과는 조금 다른 가치를 가지고 있었는데, 나는 자주 그 중년이 메고 있는 하얀색 박스에 그 적지 않은 돈을 밀어넣고는 했다. 막 사회생활을 시작한 성년이 사회에 공헌한다는 자기만족이었을 것이다. 아무도 나에게 강요하지 않았지만, 나는 선의를 행한다는 자기만족으로, 담배를 하루 반 갑쯤 더 핀다는 느낌으로 그 모금함에 천 원을 넣었다. 최근 그 노인을 다시 보았다. 놀랍게도 17년 전 그 몰골 그대로, 그는 여전히 그 모금함을 들고 건널목에서 행인들에게 아이컨택을 하고 있었다. 그의 몰골이 그대로여서 놀랐거나, 또는 그가 더욱 적극적으로 아이컨택을 하며 모금함을 내밀어서 놀랐거나 하지는 않았다. 나는 그를 서울시 성동구 강변역이 아닌 경기도 안양시 롯데백화점 평촌점 앞에서 보았다는 것에 놀랐다. 그가 이 곳으로 이사를 온 것일까? 강변역에 유동인구가 줄어들어 원정이라도 온 것일까? 문득 근본을 파고드는 질문이 생겼다. 그는 과연 누구를 위하여 모금을 받고 있는 것일까? 그는 누구인가? 1. 로또45는 한국에서 가장 보편적인 복권이다. 나는 흔히 ‘전국민이 하는 부동산 계’ 라고 표현하고는 하는데, 주단위로 돈을 모아 수수료를 떼고 몇몇 사람에게 몰아주는 형태가 정말 계와 닮았다고 생각한다. 로또를 정기적으로 사는 사람들 중 상당수도 이런 생각들을 가지고 있을 것이다. 그들은 다음에 몰아받는 사람은 자기가 될 것이라는 꿈에 부풀어 일주일을 살아간다. 나는 오만하게도 그 꿈을 우습게 여겨왔던 시절이 있다. 노동의 가치는 신성한 것이고, 자본주의 하에서 사람은 누구나 그 노동의 가치를 나름의 비율 계산을 거친 재화로 환산하여 살아가야 한다고 생각했기 때문이다. 내게 로또에 절절대며 사는 사람들은 ‘감나무 아래서 감 떨어지기만을 기다리며 누워 있는 사람’일 뿐이었다. 하지만 나는 이제는 그 생각이 잘못된 생각이라고 본다. ‘멍청한 모금함’에 넣었던 돈으로 복권을 사는 것이 훨씬 가치 있는 일이다. (당시에는 로또가 없었지만, 주택복권은 있었다.) 2018년 현재 복권 수익금의 약 40 % -주단위로 돈을 모을 때 떼가는 그 수수료 말이다.- 는 정부 주도 하에 저소득층 지원 등 공익사업으로 투명하게 사용되고 있다. 물론 일부 금액은 ‘전국민 계’라는 이름으로 다른 사람에게 무상증여하는 꼴이 된다고도 할 수 있지만, 공익사업 아이템으로서의 유인책으로 여긴다면 ‘사촌이 땅 샀다고 배아픈’ 느낌은 조금 덜하다고 볼 수도 있을 것이다. 물론 로또가 효과적인 기부책이라고 생각하는 것에는 이견이 있을 것이다. 어떻게 보면 매우 비효율적인 기부일 수도 있다. 하지만 ‘일주일을 기댈 수 있는’ 심리적 안정감은 사람마다 그 가치가 다르다. 사람에 따라서, 그 심리적 안정감 덕분에 로또가 사회적 효용의 총량 측면에서 가장 효율적인 기부책이 될 수도 있을 것이다. 최소한, 20여년간 변하지 않는 건널목의 이름모를 모금함에 들어가는 것보다는 효율적이라고 확신한다. 나는 재해구난의 가치, 빈곤구제의 가치, 환경보호의 가치들 중 어느 것을 가장 중요시할까? 이런 질문을 던지기 전에 먼저 가장 근본적인 질문을 던져야 한다고 생각한다. 어떤 마음으로 나는 기부를 하는가? "왜" 나는 기부를 하는가? ‘멍청한 모금함’에 돈을 넣는 일조차 선의에 의한 것만은 분명하다. 선의를 가지고 있음은 분명하다. 윌리엄 맥어스킬의 저서 “냉정한 이타주의자”는 ‘멍청했던 나의 기부행각’을 준엄히 꾸짖는다. 선의만으로 나의 나태함과 교만함을 용서받을 수는 없는 것이다.  2. 이 책은 저자가 기부, 나아가 인류에 공헌하는 가장 효율적인 방법을 찾아가는 여정을 그리고 있다. 그리고 이 책을 읽기를 기대하는 독자를 이미 기부를 하고 있는 사람이거나 기부를 할 생각으로 가득찬 사람으로 한정하고, 그 사람들만이 이 책을 읽기를 기대하고 있다. 이 지점에서 저자의 영리함을 엿볼 수 있다. 저자는 초반부터 도표와 수치들로 인류 전체의 행복 효율에 대하여 이야기하고 있는데, 사실 맥락상으로는 기부를 마음먹은 사람들에게는 여태까지 아는 내용들을 부연하는 것에 불과하다. 그런데 이것에 동의하지 않는 사람들이라면? 중후반부의 논지는 기부행위 자체를 불만스럽게 여기는 속칭 ‘일부 자유주의자’ 들의 공격거리가 되기 십상인 내용들로 가득차 있다. ‘기부’에 대한 컨센서스가 형성되어 있지 않은 상태에서 이 책을 읽는 것은 그래서 위험하다. 내 경우에는? 컨센서스고 뭐고 그저 그 방법이 궁금하였다. 기부에 대한 의식보다 호기심이 앞서버렸다. 3. PART 1에서는 5개의 장에서 효율적으로 기부하는 판단 준거를 소개하고 있다. 사실, 제목만 보자면 비즈니스 자기계발서 등에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 경구 같이 보인다. 기부하자는 책에서 비즈니스 경구가 나오는 것이 신기하기도 하다. 나중 가면 신기한 것이 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 이 책은 인간으로서 가장 숭고한 행위인 ‘남을 돕는’ 것을 하고자, QALY 등 각종 사회과학, 경제학 이론 등을 동원하여 가장 효율적인 방법을 찾고 있기 때문이다. 놀랍게도, 비즈니스 이론과 크게 달라 보이지 않는 이 경구들로, 나는 이 책이 단순한 기부에 대한 내용은 아니라는 것을 알게 되었다. 이 책은 기부라는 ‘목표’를 위해 어떻게 할 것인가에 대해 소개하고 있는데, 기부를 다른 단어로 바꾸어보면 어떨까? 예를 들어, 신사업을 탐색할 때, 얼마나 많은 사람들에게 얼마나 효과적인지를 따진다거나, 남들이 아직 뛰어들지 않은 사업인지 살펴본다거나, 지금 신사업을 일으키지 않았을 때 어떻게 될 것인지 예측해본다거나 하는 일 말이다. PART 1에 소개된 다섯 개의 챕터는 기부 뿐만 아니라 세상 만사에 훌륭한 판단 준거가 되어줄 수 있다고 본다. PART 2는 기부를 위한 실제적인 준비론이다. 가장 놀라웠던 지점은 남을 돕는 방법을 소개한 것이다. 저자는 아프리카로 날아가 직접 남을 돕는 것이 대부분의 사람들에게는 비효율적이라는 것을 지적한다. 가장 아름다울 수는 있어도, 가장 효율적인 방법은 아니라는 것이다. 차라리 돈을 많이 벌어, 그 돈을 기부하는 것이 좋다고 저자는 ‘논리적’으로 설명한다. 행위로서 그 숭고함을 찾는 기부의 일반론에서, 충격적인 내용이었다. 아마 많은 사람들이 비슷하게 느낄 것이다. 금본주의 사회에서 이타주의를 실현하고자 하는 가장 효과적인 수단 역시 ‘돈으로 해결하려는’ 것인데, 그 묘한 거부감에 대하여 저자는 충분히 이해하지만 지적한다. 하지만 저자의 생각은 타당하다. 아니, 가장 합리적인 선택이다. 모든 사람들이 아프리카로 날아갈 준비가 되어 있는 것은 아니다. 모든 사람들이 아프리카로 날아간다면 당연히 상대적 가치는 하락할 뿐만 아니라, 개인의 역량 상 다른 일을 하는 것이 훨씬 효율적일 수 있는 것이다. 이 책의 가장 중요한 맥락은 ‘내가 할 수 있는 가장 최선’ 의 것을 찾는 것이다. 길바닥에 떨어진 지폐를 줍는 것도 ‘기회비용’ 측면에서 손해인 빌 게이츠는 아프리카에서 아이에게 밥을 떠먹여주는 것보다 당연히 돈을 벌어서 재단을 세우는 것이 낫다. 선진국의 대다수의 국민들 역시 빌 게이츠만큼 극적이지는 않지만, 자신의 능력을 극대화해 그 소득을 기부하는 것이 보다 효율적이다. 이제 돈을 버는 것 –나아가 인류 사회에 공헌하는 것- 에 대한 초점을 맞추기 위하여, 저자는 직업 선택에까지 그 팔을 뻗는다. 챕터 9는 불투명한 미래를 걱정하는 청년들을 위한 자기계발서 그 자체이다. 이 지점까지 오게 되자 나는 독자는 이 책이 단순 기부에 대한 내용이 아니라는 것을 다시 한 번 느끼게 되었다. 아마 억지로 책을 읽고 있을 몇몇 독자들은 이 쯤에서 책을 덮게 될 것이다. ‘아니 기부하려고 직업까지 끌려가야 한단 말인가?’ 4. 이 책을 미리 읽은 동료, 지인들이 생각보다 많았다. 그리고 놀랍게도 이 책에 대한 다양한 반응들을 접하게 되었다. 기부에 대한 창의적인 발상 등의 긍정적 평가부터, 강요당하는 느낌, “그렇게까지 기부를 해야돼?” 라는 부정적 반응까지. 나는 이 책을 어떻게 대하였는가? 어느 순간부터 나는 이 책에서 ‘기부’라는 단어가 보이지 않게 되었다. 이 책을 마지막까지 읽고 덮으면서 영화 ‘곡성’ 이 생각났다. ‘곡성’은 그 미장셴, 배우의 연기력 등에서도 칭찬받을 만한 영화이다. 하지만 ‘곡성’이 찬양받아야 하는 핵심 지점은 바로 영화의 메타적 테마, 즉 ‘보고 싶은대로 보인다.’ 라는 것을 감독이 내러티브에 완벽히 녹아내었고, 관객들까지도 ‘홀리게’ 만든다는 점이다. 개봉 당일에 보고 나온 나는 각종 커뮤니티 게시판에 올라온 수많은 각자의 해석들을 보고 놀랐다. 그들은 완벽히 영화에 홀린 것이다. 이렇게 관객을 홀린 영화는 아마 한국 영화에서 두 번 다시 찾기 어려울지도 모른다. 아쉽게도 ‘이렇게 열심히 살아서 기부해야지!’ 까지는 미치지 못하였다. 내가 아직 ‘인류에 공헌한다’ 라는 세계에서 가장 광대한 목표를 설정할 만한 그릇이 되지 못한 탓이다. 아직까지는 내 가족, 내 주변인의 행복을 빌어주는 정도 뿐이다. 만약 ‘인류에 공헌한다’ 라는 목표가 있었다면 ‘멍청한 모금함’에 돈을 넣는 일은 하지 않았을 것이다. 대신 나에게 이 책은 ‘어떻게 살 것인가’ 에 대한 책이 되었다. ‘곡성’의 메타적 테마에 주목하듯이 말이다. 효율적 이타주의의 5가지 사고법은 단지 효율적 이타주의를 실현하기 위한 준거가 아니다. 약간의 변형을 거치면 모든 삶의 판단 준거로 적용할 수 있다. 효율적 이타주의의 실천적 해법은 단순히 ‘효율적인 기부법’을 소개하는 것이 아니다. 어떻게 합리적으로 생각하고 실천하며, 실행을 위한 준비 과정의 시야를 넓혀주는 훌륭한 예시들이다. 저자는 기부를 위해서 어떻게 전공을 선택하고, 선택된 전공의 성공 가능성 예측법까지 알려주고 있다. 이 방법론을 적용하지 못할 곳이 현실 어디에 있는가? 이 정도로 쉽고 합리적으로 설명해주는 책은 찾기 쉽지 않다. 다행히 이 책의 결론은 저자가 의도한 원 테마로 돌아온다. 당장 기부해라! 아쉽지만 아직 어디에 기부할지는 결정하지 못했다. 다만, 당장 책을 덮은 후부터 사고방식에 변화를 줄 것이다. 기부보다 나를 바꾸려고 노력하는 것이 아직은 내게 더 쉬운 일인가 보다.
