 최규석 작가는 이미 아는 사람들은 다 알고 있는, <습지생태보고서>와 <공룡 둘리>의 작가입니다. 사실 두 작품은 비슷한 방법론과 작중 환경을 가지고 있음에도, 그 시선이 극명하게 대비되는 작품인데요. 그의 실력은 이미 만인이 인정하고 있지만, 그의 시각에는 호오가 생기는 이유라고 생각합니다. 또 한편으로 개인적으로는 강풀 등의 흔히 회자되는 '진보계 만화가' 와는 약간의 경계를 두고 있다고 생각하는데, 작품들을 관통하는 작가의 세계관을 분명히 가지고 있고, 그에 대한 작가의 철학도 분명 일관되어 있다고 생각하지만, 최규석 작가는 절대 자신의 철학을 독자의 턱 밑으로 들이밀지 않습니다. 어떻게 보면 또 아주 직설적인 사건들이지만, 그 사건에 대한 시각의 층위를 차곡차곡 쌓아 제시하면서, 독자들로 하여금 이수인 과장 같이 방황하게 만듭니다. 우화적 방법론을 선택한 주호민 작가, 극단적인 은유로 독자들을 자극하는 꼬마비 작가와는 또다른 영역이지요. 저는 그런 최규석 작가를 정말 좋아합니다. 단순히 제시된 사실과 주장을 받아들이는 것보다는, 숙고를 통해 받아들이는 것을 좋아하거든요. 그리고 그런 최규석 작가의 모든 것이 포텐을 터뜨린 최신작 <송곳>이 드라마로, 살아 움직이는 캐릭터로 우리 앞에 서게 되었습니다. 개인적으로 구 소장의 캐릭터가 좀 이상해지지 않았나 하는 우려가 살짝 있습니다만, (원작에서는 평소 생활에서도 그렇게 어리버리하지는 않았던거 같은데 엉엉) 전체적인 맥락은 원작을 거의 100% 얹어왔다는 점에서 아주 만족에 대만족으로 눈물을 흘리며 보고 있습니다. 아마 안내상 씨가 맡은 캐릭터는 확실한 선으로서 이야기를 끌고 나가는 역할을 해서 균형을 맞추려는 것 같더군요. 이건 약간 고전적인 균형이긴 하지만 그만큼 안정적이긴 하겠어요.
노조 가입하면서 본격적으로 갈등이 발생하는 것 같은데 내러티브보다도 인물 묘사가 정말 마음에 들더라고요.
입체적 인물, 그러니까 선악으로 묘사할 수 없고 풍부하게 해석할 수 있는 능동적인 인물들은 다 똑똑하고 잘나고 멋있는 사람들이에요. 예를 들면, 최근 정도전에 나온 정도전이나 이방원.
