최근 ChatGPT(https://chat.openai.com/chat)의 놀라운 능력에 대해서 커뮤니티 상에서 간간히 언급이 되고 있는 것 같습니다. 이전에도 텍스트 생성 인공지능에 대한 얘기는 있었지만, ChatGPT는 사실상 누구나 직접 테스트할 수 있게 되면서 체감하는 바가 더 크게 느껴집니다. 제가 ChatGPT를 테스트해보면서 직접 확인해 본 인공지능의 수준과 이전에 지식으로 알고 있던 최신 기술 수준을 종합해서 머릿 속에서 맴돌고 있는 생각들이 있는데, 이걸 글로 정리를 해 볼까 합니다. 지극히 제 관점에서 분석했기에 일반적으로 생각할 수 있는 관점과 다를 수 있습니다. 예를 들면, 현재 시점에서 저는 사람과 거의 구별이 가지 않을 정도로 유창하게 대화를 하는 케이스는 더 이상 놀라울 게 없다고 생각합니다. 최근에 “구독자 1600만 유튜버가 말하는 AI가 인간을 대체 못하는 이유“ (https://www.dogdrip.net/450487029) 가 화제가 되기도 했었는데, 저에게는 딱히 인상적이지 않았습니다. 이미 저 정도의 텍스트 생성 능력은 더 이상 새로울 게 없기 때문입니다. 사실상 세상의 거의 모든 텍스트를 습득한 GPT3급 이상의 언어 모델에서 기존 인간의 지식을 활용해서 유창하게 말하는 정도는 이제는 기본 능력으로 보는 게 맞습니다. ChatGPT에서 테스트해 본 아래 예를 보면 좀 더 이해가 쉬울 것 같습니다. 위의 유튜버 스크립트 생성을 유도하는 질문과 유사하게 아래와 같이 질문해 봤습니다.   텍스트 생성 인공지능 특성상 그때그때 글의 형식이 달라질 수 있기에, 그런 부분을 과도하게 의미부여하는 건 큰 의미가 없습니다. 하지만 그 내용에서는 중요한 포인트가 있는데요, 일단 말투가 굉장히 전형적이고 내용 또한 누가 해도 이상하지 않을 만한 내용들입니다. 저는 침착맨 유튜브 스크립트를 요청했는데, 이런 부분이 전혀 반영되어 있지가 않습니다(저런 식으로 말을 할 리가 없습니다). 결국 현재 글쓰기 인공지능은 세상의 지식을 종합해서 가장 평균적인 형태로 생성해 낸다고 봐도 크게 무리가 없을 겁니다. 알파고가 처음 공개되었을 때와 같이 초창기에는 이것만으로도 충분히 놀라웠지만, 현재 시점에서는 더 이상 특별할 게 없죠. 역시 엄청난 이슈가 되었던 Stable Diffusion 기반의 이미지 생성 인공지능에서도 충격을 받았던 부분은 그림 자체를 굉장한 고퀄리티로 그려낸다는 것 자체로 충분히 대단합니다만, 더 놀라웠던 건 사용자의 주문에 맞춰 상상하기 힘든 (힘들다고 여겨지는) 이미지를 창조해 냈다는 것입니다.  [canva.com] 기존의 지식을 그대로 출력하는 걸 넘어서, 조합해 냈다는 부분이 현재 AI의 감탄할 만한 능력이 아닌가라고 생각하는데, 그와 비슷한 관점에서 ChatGPT에서도 개인적으로 인상깊었던 테스트 케이스들이 있어서 몇 가지 공유해 보겠습니다(편의상 파파고 번역의 도움을 받았습니다). 제가 워낙 글쓰기와 거리가 먼 사람이라 쓸데없이 앞부분이 길어졌군요… 1) 일론 머스크로 랩 쓰기 Write a rap in which Elon Musk is praised. 뛰어난 정리 감사드려요. 말씀 주신 내용이, 몇 년 전까지 AI가 인간을 대체한다고 난리치던 이들을 제가 경멸하는 이유이기도 합니다. 기술에 대한 이해 없이 “이거 봐, 대단한 거 만들지 않았니?”라면서 난리치는 인간들 너무 싫어요. 미술이든 텍스트든 창작에서 현 AI가 할 수 있는 영역이 명확한데도 말이죠. 보여주신 것처럼, 일반화 또는 혼합? 을 통한 ’새로운‘ 결과물을 도출하는 것임에도, 가본 적 없는 새로운 곳에 간다고 말하다니(쓰다보니 uncertainty quantification이 떠오르네요). 누군가 말했던 것처럼, 현재 AI는 집단지성이 무엇인지를 기술적으로 구현한 것이라고 보아야 하지 않나, 하는 게 제 생각이에요. 종합적인 결과물에선 때로 놀랍지만, 그게 진정 새로운 건 아닌데 말이죠.
