 [<조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>은 츠네오의 회상과 독백을 통해 전개되는, 츠네오 자신의 성장 서사다. 아니, 그것을 의도한 영화라 하자. 내가 본 것은, 성장이 없는 성장 서사의 기만이다....] http://ppss.kr/archives/58687 에 동의하지 않는 이유 (이걸 먼저 읽으시길 바랍니다) <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>에서 츠네오의 성장을 읽을 수도 있다. 거의 모든 서사에서 인물들은 어떤 중요한 경험을 하고 거기서 뭔가를 깨우치거나 변화를 겪는다. 그러나 우리가 무언가를 성장 서사라고 할 때 그 중심에는 “변화”가 있다. 그 변화 자체가 중심이고 그 목적을 위해 인과관계를 기승전결로 구성되며, 인물은 변화의 과정과 결과를 체감한다. <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>의 흐름 속에서 츠네오는 유의미한 변모를 보이지 않는다. 조제를 만나기 전의 츠네오와, 조제를 만나는 동안의 츠네오, 조제를 만나고 난 후의 츠네오가 그리 변하지 않았다는 뜻이다. 조제를 만나기 전의 츠네오를 보자. 도박장에서 알바를 하며 적당히 돈을 벌고, 섹스 파트너인 노리코와 적당히 애욕을 채우고, 이런 사실은 숨긴 채 카나네와 적당히 연애를 즐긴다. 조제와 우연히 만났고 흥미에서 시작한 호의는 연민으로, 그리고 (확신할 수 없는)연애감정으로 발전한다. 어쩌다보니 자신의 아리송한 구애가 “좋은 사람”이라는 사회적 포장지로 덧씌워지지만 츠네오는 이 오해를 적당히 받아들이며 플러스 점수로 구직에 활용한다. 조제와 만날 무렵 츠네오는 동생에게 힘들지 않냐며 걱정섞인 소리를 듣고 헤어질 무렵에는 그럴 줄 알았다는 뉘앙스의 통화를 나눈다. 이별 직후에는 전에 만났던 카나에에게 다시 돌아간다. 이쁘고, 사지 멀쩡하고, 자신이 줄 수 없는 만큼의 도움을 원하지 않는, 조금 더 쉽고 안전하게 무언가를 베풀 수 있는 상대방을 찾은 셈이다. 츠네오는 처음부터 끝까지 흐리멍텅하고 비겁한 인간이다. 그리고 주변의 모두가 예측한 대로 행동한다. 위대해 질 수 없는 우리 모두가 그러하듯, 적당히 타협하고, 지쳐나가 떨어지는만큼의 인간으로 남을 뿐이다. 츠네오는 성장하지 않는다. 그저 누군가를 통해 다시 오지 않을 어떤 격정적이고 영롱한 순간을 지나쳐간다. <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>을 성장 서사로 읽는다면 츠네오가 아닌 조제를 바라봐야 한다. 그 성장의 방향이 평생토록 견뎌야 할 고독의 심해를 향하고 있더라도, 두번 다시 오지 않을 순간을 수면 위로 떠올려 보내고 바닥에서 머물러야 할지라도, 한층 더 부드럽게, 씩씩하게 버텨야 한다는 깨달음의 무게와 변화의 폭은 조제가 훨씬 더 클 것이기에. 토마스 만은 “더 사랑하는 사람이 약자일 수 밖에 없다”고 말했다. 장애의 유무를 떠나, 어떤 순수한 연애라도 정치적 논리가 개입한다. 아쉬운 자는 애걸하고, 덜 아쉬운 자가 칼자루를 쥔다. <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>은 개개인의 변화보다는, 그 어떤 관계에서도 이겨낼 수 없는 역학 구도의 절대적 진리를 조망한다. 조제와 츠네오는 서로에게 끌린다. 그리고 서로를 원한다. 츠네오에게 조제는 슬슬 무거워진다. 두 사람의 변화는 예정되어 있는 수순을 밟는다. 그럴 줄 몰랐던 것은 츠네오뿐이다. 조제는 처음부터 알고 있었다. 그가 읽는 프랑수아 사강의 희곡은 다음과 같다. “언젠가 너는 그 남자를 사랑하지 않게 되겠지, 라고 베르나르가 조용히 말했다. 그리고 언젠가 나도 너를 사랑하지 않게 되겠지. 우리들은 또 다시 고독해질 거고, 그래도 달라지는 건 없어. 거기에는 또 흘러간 1년의 세월이 있을 뿐이야. 응, 알고 있어, 라고 조제가 말했다.” 츠네오의 시선도 허락하지 않는 조제와, 츠네오에게 매달리는 조제는 이분되지 않는다. 우리는 다락에서 주워온 책을 읽으며 조제를 강하다고 보지 않는다. 루미놀이 어쩌고를 중얼거리는 조제의 허장성세에서 싸구려 동정을 허락하지 않으려는 연약한 내피를 엿본다. 갈 테면 가버리라고 솔직하게 우는 조제에게서 내피의 틈으로 삐져나오는 연약한 속살을 엿본다. 러브호텔에서 골아떨어진 츠네오에게 독백처럼 웅얼거리는 조제에게서는 투명한 살덩이 속 가지런하지만 하늘거리는 뼈대를 엿본다. 조제는 츠네오를 간신히 허락했고, 당연한 척 부려댔으며, 아무렇지 않게 보내준다. 그러나 조제는 자신을 바꾸지 않는다. 조제의 모든 순간은 강인함의 그라데이션 끝에 있는 순백의 지점으로 수렴한다. 신입생의 장기자랑을 보며 츠네오가 광분하고, 짐을 챙겨 떠나오는 길에서 오열했던 것은, 이 그라데이션의 끄트머리를 두고 조제가 자신을 속이지 못했음을, 자신이 속아주지 못했음을 알기 때문이다. 희미한 경계선 위에서 의존과 독립을 오고 가지만 조제는 “약한 인간”으로 일관되게 존재한다. 그래서 조제는 츠네오와의 관계를 주도하지 못한다. 이들의 관계는 처음부터 능동적인 쌍방의 소통으로 시작하지 않았다. 츠네오의 꾸준한 침범을 조제가 양보하고, 차단하다가, 수락하고, 종국에는 흘려보냈어야 했다. (이들의 이별여행이 얼마나 츠네오 마음대로 굴러갔는지, 조제의 뜻과 상관없이 굴러갔는지를 생각해보자) 단 한번도 누군가를 사랑해보지 못했고 사랑받아본 적이 없는 이가, 얄팍한 자존심의 껍질 속에 틀어박혀 살더만 이가, 어떻게 주체적이며 온전한 인간으로 관계 속에서 자리할 수 있을까. 이것은 장애와 상관없이 모든 연애 관계에서 벌어지는 비극이다. 그리고 이 관계의 종말은 장애를 가진 인간의 일생을 외면하지 못하기에 더욱 더 비극적이다. <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>은 이별이 가지는 보편적인 죄책감을 이야기하면서도, 조제와 츠네오의 관계가 가지는 특수성을 침묵하지 않는다. 츠네오가 터트리는 울음이 과거에 대한 회한뿐이라면, 이는 연속된 자기기만을 감정의 고조로, 성장의 순간처럼 속이려는 비판을 피하지 못할 것이다. 그러나 이는 성장통이라기보다는 노력에도 불구하고 계속 그렇게 머무를 수 밖에 없는 인간의 한계다. 그리고 서로를 필요로 하던 둘의 관계가 다시 현실과 욕망으로 진해질 무렵, 남아있던 최후의 순수함이 회광반조처럼 격렬하게 빛나는 순간이다. 해당 장면에서 일상의 소음은 차단되고 사운드트랙과 츠네오의 나레이션이 지배한다. 함께 걷는 카네에와, 지나다니는 자동차의 소음마저도 파고 들 수 없을 만큼 츠네오의 고백이 영화를 채운다. 여기서 주목할 것은 츠네오가 우는 장면은 장애랑은 아무 상관없는, 필연적 비극”이었다”는 자기 변호의 종점이 아니라는 점이다. 스스로가 내딛는 비겁한 발걸음의 앞을, 그리고 과거와 절연한 채로 해저에 남겨질 조제의 미래를 츠네오가 인식하는 또다른 출발점이다. 그래서 자기 기만에서 가장 멀어지는 순간 츠네오의 나레이션은 과거 대신 미래를 이야기한다. “헤어져도 친구로 남는 여자도 있지만, 조제는 아니다. 조제를 만날 일은 다시는 없을 것이다.” 만약 이야기가 츠네오의 통곡에서 끝났다면 편리한 이별과 성장통이라는 혐의가 더 진해졌을 것이다. 그러나 에필로그 형식에서 우리는 츠네오와의 이별 뒤에도 담담하게 살아가는 조제의 일상을 본다. 그리고 별 탈 없이 돌아가는 조제의 하루에서 우리가 일찍이 예견했던 진짜 비극으로 끌려들어간다. 이를 츠네오의 자기 반성을 곁들이는 편리한 장면이라고 할 수 있을까. 여기서 조제의 행복한 미래를 읽는 것은 츠네오의 형량을 부풀리기 위한 넘겨짚기일지도 모른다. 깊은 해저 아래에서, 한순간 찾아온 빛이 다시 수면 위로 줄행랑을 쳤다면, 외로운 심해어가 다시 그것을 어떻게 쫓으리라 기대할 수 있을까. 어렸을 때부터 온갖 심장 질환과 알콜 중독 증세를 호소하던 한국의 느린 가요들에 질렸던 내가 윤미래의 “시간이 흐른 뒤”를 들으며 울었던 이유는 그 담담함이, 과장하지 않는 슬픔의 진실을 오롯이 안겨주었기 때문이다. 마지못해 살아가겠지, 너 없이도- 츠네오가 꺼이꺼이 소리내어 우는 장면에서 우리는 슬픔의 최고점에 다다른다. 동시에 그 동안 쌓아온 슬픔을 풀어낸다. 운다는 행위는 해소의 과정이고, 여운이 남을 지언정 눈물로 흘려내며 맛보는 카타르시스를 이끌어낸다. 츠네오는 울며 기억과 추억을 연소시켰다. 우리가 보는 츠네오는 거기서 끝이다. 어찌됐건, 츠네오는 재를 밟고서 새로운 미래를 향해 나아갈 것이다. 그러나 조제가 우는 모습은 나오지 않는다. 조제에게는 해소의 순간이 주어지지 않는다. 조제의 비극은 풀리지 않은 채로 보는 이를 고요히 가라앉힌다. 성대가 갈라지도록 울부짖는 과정이 없이도, 늘 그렇게 곧바로 적막과 우울과 자괴감 속에서 떠돌 것이다. 영화가 이 부분을 굳이 그리지 않는 것은, 그럴 필요가 없기 때문이다. 더 잔인하고 음습하며, 츠네오의 죄책감으로는 절대 보상할 수 없는 조제의 고독한 삶이 곧바로 이어진다. 조제는 늘 외로웠지만 그게 외로운 줄도 잘 몰랐다. 츠네오는 머물렀다가 이제 떠나고 없다. 결론적으로 츠네오는 조제에게 홀로 사는 고통을 가르치고 말았다. 츠네오의 존재는 역설적으로 조제의 외로움을 진화시켰다. 이 마지막 장면에서 조제는 모든 프레임에 홀로 존재한다. 전동의자를 타고 바깥을 달리지만 주변의 인간들은 오로지 자신을 스쳐갈 뿐이다. 방 안을 비추는 카메라는 이것저것 놓아져있고 뭔가가 붙어있지만 그 장식품들고 무늬가 메꾸지 못하는 여백을 강조한다. 단 하나의 베개, 단 하나의 이불, 불판 위에서 구워지는 단 하나의 고등어 조각. 요리가 끝나자 조제는 우리의 시선이 보이지 않는 저 아래로 떨어져버린다. 심해 속으로 잠수하는 조제의 낙하운동을 그리며 끝나는 마지막 장면에서 조제의 행복한 일상을 상상하는 것은 부자연스럽다. 이는 츠네오와 조제 두 사람의 이별을 비교해봐도 충분히 유추가 가능하다. 두 사람 모두 이별 전의 과거로 회귀한다. 카네에의 곁에서, 머무를 수 있는 츠네오의 미래와, 할머니의 곁에 머무를 수 없는 조제의 미래 중 누가 더 막막하고 암담하게 느껴지는가. 이 엔딩을 서술자의 곡해로 바라보는 것은 온당치 않다. 이 영화가 츠네오의 시선과 회상에서 벗어나 전지적 시점으로 조제의 내면을 비추는 부분은 결코 츠네오의 편의를 위한 것도, 조제의 아픔을 은폐하기 위한 것도 아니다. 츠네오의 시선 바깥에서, 카네에와 조제가 서로 따귀를 교환하는 장면을 보자. 츠네오를 빼았겼다며 카네에는 조제의 뺨을 때리고 츠네오의 애정을 동정이라고 경멸한다. 조제는 카네에에게 뺨을 내밀어주라고 요구한 후 자신도 똑같이 뺨을 때린다. 카네에는 다시 한번 조제의 뺨을 때린다. 조제는 카네에의 뺨을 되치려고 하지만 이번에는 카네에가 뺨을 내밀어주지 않는다. 조제는 자신의 고고함으로는 극복할 수 없는 육체적 한계를 맛본다. 그리고 이는 츠네오의 비겁함 때문에 벌어진 일이다. 그렇지만 츠네오는 이 사실을 모른다. 오로지 이야기 바깥의 우리만이 목격자로 존재하는 조제의 진실이다. 우리는 조제가 현실 속에서 얼마나 무력한지, 조제가 처한 세계가 얼마나 치사스럽고 비루한 공간인지를 실감한다. (츠네오가 알 수 없었던 조제의 쓰레기봉지 처리 방법과, 이를 듣고 난 후 츠네오의 반응을 생각해보자) 수용자의 전지적 시점을 제외한다면, 이야기 속에서 가장 절대적인 진실은 이야기를 비추는 내부의 전지적 시점일 것이다. 그리고 이는 츠네오의 시선에서 잠깐 벗어나 보다 온전한 진실에 가까운 순간을 엿볼 수 있는, 이야기 바깥의 수용자만의 특혜다. 따라서 엔딩을 포함한 전지적 시점의 이야기는 츠네오의 시선의 초월적 확장이라고 볼 수 없다. 오히려, 츠네오의 시선의 연장선상을 벗어나, 그래도 행복하게 잘 살고 있겠지라는 싸구려 연민의 빛이 닿지 않는 해저 속 조제만의 심연이다. 일관된 시선이 객과적 진실을 담보하지는 못한다. 엇갈리는 독백들로 비로소 만들수 있는 진실도 있다. 서술자가 이야기 안에서 거의 반칙에 가깝게 친절하게 조제의 진실을 가리켜주는데도 굳이 츠네오의 시선과 이를 결부하고 의심하며 진실을 외면할 필요는 없다. 이를 불순한 곡해로 바라보는 것은 오히려 동등한 고통의 동일한 나열을 통한 기계적 중립의 강박과 가깝다. <조제, 호랑이, 그리고 물고기들>은 인물들이 처한 현실을 묘사하는 것이 아니라, 이들의 내면을 균형있게 보여주는 것에 더 주안점을 두고 있다. 츠네오의 시선을 벗어나 조제의 내면을 그대로 드러내는 영화의 시선 이동은 관계의 시작과 끝에서 두 사람을 고루 보여주려는 균형잡기의 의도로 봐야 할 것이다. 그 결과 영화가 완성하는 것은 츠네오가 아닌 “조제”다. 이 영화를 볼 때마다 나는 차마 울지 못한다. 츠네오의 시선에서, 츠네오가 터트리는 울음을 공유하려다가도, 이내 츠네오를 바라보는 한 명의 관객이 되어 자기연민을 경계하려 애쓴다. 그리고 영화 끝 홀로 된 조제가 일으키는 심해 속 물결에 함께 부유하며 억눌렀던 울음이 쑥 들어가버리는 현상을 체험한다. 고등어를 굽는 조제의 얼굴 위에 일상으로 내려앉은 외로움의 흔적을 보며 나는 감정의 사치를 억누른다. 울기에는 새삼스러운 고독의 연속에서, 한번 울면 앞으로의 나날이 영영 절망일 것만 같아 조제는 감히 슬픔도 허락하지 못한다. 그렇게 새파랗던 위에서 어느새 시커매지는 바닷속 밑바닥으로 오늘도 조제는 점프한다. 그 바닥이 원래 자신이 속해있는 곳이기에, 그리고 빛 속에서 세차게 자신을 이끌어줄 누군가를 감히 또 꿈꿀 수 없기에.
