비가 엄청 오네요. 날 궂으니 뻘소리를 해볼까 합니다. 영상을 촬영할 때 프레임 레이트 설정은, 영화는 24fps, 드라마나 다큐는 30fps라는 인식이 있습니다. 왜 이렇게 굳어졌는지는 기술적, 상업적 등 다양한 이유가 있고, 이는 구글에서 너무도 쉽게 상세한 히스토리를 알 수 있으니 생략하겠습니다. 아무튼 상기의 두 가지가 룰처럼 자리잡고 있습니다. (25fps도 있는데 TV 표준 프레임과 관련있는 부분이라 이 역시 생략...) # 60fps 영상 - 저는 주로 60fps로 영상을 찍습니다. 이유는 단순해요. 부드러워서 보기 좋으니까. 움직임이 좀 더 잘 보일 수 있게끔 셔터 스피드(이하 셔속)를 좀 더 높여도 되고 (60fps 기준 초당 125프레임) 주간에 야외에서 촬영할 때도 필요에 따라 셔속을 더 높일 수 있습니다. 24fps나 30fps보다 어색함이 덜하고, 아무래도 보다 선명한 영상이 나옵니다. - 그런데 선명하다는 점이 반드시 장점인 건 아닙니다. 1) 야간 촬영 시 셔속이 높을수록 광량 확보에 불리하고, 2) 시네마 캠코더 대비 (미러리스 등) 디카는 메이커에서 결과물에 의도적으로 샤프닝을 걸기 때문에 쨍해 보여서 영화처럼 은은하게 뭉개주는 느낌은 바로 낼 수 없기 때문입니다. - 한데 밤에 촬영할 때의 저조도 광량 확보 부분은 바디의 성능이 올라가면서 상당 부분 극복이 되고 있고, 영화같은 색감, 느낌은 시간은 좀 더 걸려도 편집 과정에서 대부분 해결 가능하니 큰 문제는 아니죠. - 그보다는 우리가 흔히 보는 영상들이 24fps이나 30fps이라 60fps 영상을 접하면 위화감이 생긴다는 점을 더 꼽을 만합니다. 눈에 적응할 만큼 익숙하지 않은 거죠. 덧붙여 의도적으로 다소 거칠거나 투박한, 박력있는 연출을 내야 할 때는 60fps이 살짝 어색해 보이는 면도 없지 않습니다. - 24fps나 30fps 대비 하드웨어적인 퍼포먼스를 더 요구한다는 부분도 있는데 이건 60fps를 선택하지 않을 중요한 이유는 아닌 것 같아서 패스. # 24fps, 30fps 영상 - 실은 24fps냐 30fps냐도 프레임 레이트에서 25% 차이가 나기 때문에 이 역시 구분해서 얘기해야 합니다. 특히 영화를 TV로 옮겨갈 때 프레임 레이트가 일치하지 않아서 문제가 발생하기도 하고요. 그래서 유럽에서는 영화든 TV든 25fps로 고정해서 촬영하기도 하는데 이 글에선 넘어가겠습니다. (사실상 24fps+30fps vs 60fps라) - 영화나 다큐 같은 데서 좌우나 상하로 카메라를 패닝할 때 자연스럽게 스크롤되지 않고 조금씩 끊겨 보이는 현상을 아실 거예요. 이걸 저더(judder; 모션끊김) 현상이라고 합니다. 영화는 특히 24fps이라 좀 자주 발견되죠. https://youtu.be/5SSU-s0AUH0 위의 영상에서 화면은 계속 우로 패닝되고 있습니다. 뚝뚝 끊기는 저더 현상이 확인되지요? 프레임 레이트가 낮을수록, 셔속이 과하게 높을수록, 패닝 속도가 불균일할수록 저더는 쉽게 보일 수 있습니다. - 고프레임 레이트라고 저더 현상이 없는 건 아니지만 저프레임 레이트에 비하면 확실히 눈에 덜 띄어요. 저더를 방지하려면 의도적으로 셔터 스피드를 낮게 맞추거나 (보통 프레임 레이트x2로 계산합니다. 사람의 착시를 이용한 것인데 24fps면 셔터스피드를 1/50s로, 30fps면 1/60s로, 60fps면 1/125s로 밎추는 거죠) 방향성에 맞춰 프레임을 뭉개는 모션블러 효과를 넣는데요. 이러면 자연스러워 보일지는 몰라도 움직이는 영상이 선명해 보이지 않는 단점도 함께 생깁니다. 영화의 한 장면을 멈추면 이게 사람인지 유령인지 알 수 없는 거죠. - 확실한 장점도 있습니다. 대표적인 게 생산성. 특수 효과를 넣거나 프레임마다 마스킹 등 노가다(...)를 해야 할 때, 60fps 영상이 5프레임을 손봐야 한다면, 24fps는 2프레임만 손보면 되니까 편집의 용이성은 60fps에 비할 바가 아니죠. 화면 전환이 빠른 뮤비 같은 데서 마스킹할 때 생산성이 높다는 의미입니다. https://youtu.be/IxCb-GnpM_A?t=18 일례로 조유리양의 '러브 쉿' 뮤비입니다. Warning 대화상자가 빠바박 뜨는 부분은 전부 한 프레임씩 마스킹해서 노가다를 해준 것인데, 본 영상은 25fps예요. 그렇게 34프레임 작업을 해줬어요. 60fps 기준이면 85프레임 작업을 해줘야 하네요. -_-; - 슬로우 모션 촬영에 탁월하게 유리합니다. 슬로우 모션은, 남발하지만 않는다면 영상을 근사하게, 분위기있게 만들어주는 마법 같은 기법인데요. 예를 들어 바닷가에서 흩날리는 머리칼을 정속으로 촬영하면 헝클어지는 모습에 눈뜨고 봐주지 못할 정도겠지만, 4~5배 느리게 찍으면 아아주 우아하게 흔들리는 모습으로 탈바꿈합니다. 영상을 120fps로 촬영할 경우 24fps에서 5배 느리게, 30fps에서 4배 느리게 재생할 수 있습니다. 60fps으로는 2배밖에 안 느려집니다. https://youtu.be/XEOCbFJjRw0?t=77 이달의소녀 'Butterfly' 뮤비입니다. 근사하게 흔들리는 머리칼을 볼 수 있습니다. # 마무리 스테레오 타입이란 게 무섭단 생각이 들어요. 24fps든 30fps든 그 나름의 장점은 분명히 있습니다. 관성적이든 경제적이든 여러 이유 때문에 앞으로도 계속 애용될 거고요. 그렇지만 그게 60fps를 쓰지 않아야 할 이유가 되느냐? 하면 그건 아니라고 생각합니다. 우리는 영화든 드라마든 다큐든 뉴스든 영상을 24fps나 30fps로 많이 접해왔고, 상업 콘텐츠에서도 이런 프레임 레이트로 콘텐츠를 제작하니까 거기에 익숙해진 것일 뿐이라고 보는 거죠. 일례로 직캠은 보는 사람들이 60fps 영상을 훨씬 선호하죠. 왜냐, 직캠이라는 새로운 영상 콘텐츠를 60fps로 많이 접했으니까. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiNxfFkymTk 스튜디오 춤의 르 세라핌 'FEARLESS' 커버 댄스입니다. 부드러움 측면에선 비교가 안 되죠? 특히 유튜브라는 새로운 영상 매체에 콘텐츠를 업로드할 때면 30fps이나 24fps를 고집할 이유는 전혀 없다고 생각합니다. 때문에, 저 역시 가끔 30fps로 영상을 촬영하긴 하는데 60fps을 계속 사랑할 것 같아요. 저는 아직 4K 영상을 편집하기엔 컴터 속도가 충분치 않다고 느끼는 면이 있어서 좀 더 작업하는데 무거운 60fps 보다는 30을 선호합니다.
사실 제가 하는 작업중에 60이 필요한 작업이 거의 없기도 하고...
있다면 60으로 찍으면 느리게 재생해서 슬로우 모션을 만들어도 부드러울 수 있다 정도인데...
찍을 땐 60으로 찍어도 결과물은 30으로 다운시켜 낼 것 같기도 합니다.
왠지... 60을 잘 다룰 자신이 없어요 ㅎㅎ
과연 60이 기본인 시대도 올 것인가
