사진이 찍히던 며칠간의 이야기를 통해 제임스 딘과 인생을 담으려하는 영화의 방식은, 셔터가 눌리는 순간에 모든 것을 혹은 단 하나의 진실을 담으려 하는 사진의 방식을 그대로 따라가고 있습니다. 문득문득 스쳐갔던 제임스 딘의 미소와 표정은 모든 것을 말해주지 않지만, 수많은 시간이 응축되고 깊이 숨겨진 본질이 슬쩍 튀어나오는 순간이기도 하죠. 그렇게 건진 제임스 딘의 사진을 올려놓으면 데니스 스톡이 던진 “Life?”란 질문은 라이프 잡지에 통과하기에 충분하냐는 질문이 다가 아닐 겁니다. 우리가 잃어버리는 진실들, 잃어버린 줄 알았던 진실을 꽁꽁 감쳐두고 걷는 순간들, 그 모든 것이 우리의 삶이 아니겠냐는 질문으로도 읽혀요. 그리고 데니스 스톡처럼 쫓아다니던 우리가 스크린 너머로 보는 제임스 딘의 마지막은 과거로 돌아가지 못한 한 남자가 과거 속으로 영영 떠나버리는 모습입니다. @ 데인 드한의 싱크로율에 대해 말할 수 있겠지만, 영화를 보고 나면 제임스 딘은 데인 드한밖에 할 수 없다는 걸 이해하게 됩니다. 혼란을 이겨내는 연기를 할 수 있는 배우는 많지만, 혼란을 불안하게 버텨내는 연기를 이렇게 할 수 있는 배우는 데인 드한 말고는 없을 겁니다. @ 영화와 달리, 제임스 딘은 피어 안젤리의 약혼 사실은 알고 있었다고 합니다. 다만 그 상대가 누구인지 몰랐다고 하네요. @ 사진 작가의 감독 작품티가 매 프레임에서 납니다. @ 호밀밭의 파수꾼을 좋아하시는 분이라면, 이 영화를 좋아할 확률이 높습니다.
