  어제 친구가 가구 산다고 해서 고기대접을 약속받고 하루 종일 알프레드 노릇을 했습니다. 난생 처음 그 소문의 이케아를 가보게 된지라 신기방기하더군요. 진한 파랑과 노랑의 건물 외관이 이뻤습니다. 그런데 사람이 정말정말 많더군요. 어제가 한글날이 아니라 이케아의 날인줄 알았습니다. 이케아 입구 진입하는 곳에서 90년대 성묘길의 교통 정체를 느끼게 될 줄은 몰랐네요. 건물안에 들어가서도 카트를 밀고 다니는게 힘들었습니다. 이케아 내부에 신호등이나 교통순경이 필요한 게 아닌가 하는 생각을... 이것저것 미니멀하면서도 신박한 가구를 보고 다니면서 윈도우 쇼핑을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 물건들이 진열되 있는 곳을 지나쳐 실물을 담는 지하창고 같은 곳으로 들어섰는데 거기서부터는 넓적한 카트를 끌고 다니는 게 편하더군요. 아이들이 카트 위에 대자로 퍼질러져있기도 하고 아예 잠들어있기도 했습니다. 부럽더군요. 하도 오랫동안 끌려다닌지라 혼자서 조금이라도 지루함을 덜려고 킥보드처럼 밀고 타고 다니기 시작했습니다. 사람들이 많았던지라 마음껏 타지는 못했지만요. 그나마 한적한 구석에서 친구가 사이즈를 고려할 동안 혼자 왔다리갔다리를 반복했습니다. 민폐 끼칠까봐 막상 제대로 된 탑승을 한 건 별로 없었지만 그래도 뭔가 신이 났습니다. 쇼핑이 끝날 때는 아쉬웠네요. 그런데 그냥 그런 생각이 들더군요. 안그래도 이케아를 오면서 현재 세상이 디지털화되어가고 있다는 이야기랄 나눴었던지라, 이렇게 제가 셀프 킥보드 하는 것도 자동화가 될 수 있을 거란 데 생각이 미쳤습니다. 부자님들만이 스웨그용으로 타고 다니는 세그웨이가 언젠가는 쇼핑몰의 기본 기구가 될 수 도 있겠죠. 그러면 저처럼 일일히 발로 땅을 박차고 얼마 못가고 다시 발로 밀고 하는 수고로움이 필요없을지도 모릅니다. 훨씬 더 빠르고 능수능란하게 장거리 장시간 운전의 묘미를 즐길 수 있겠죠. 그런데 그렇게 되면 셀프 킥보드만큼 재미있을까?? 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 굳이 아재처럼 낭만을 추억하는게 아니라, 수고로운 노동 자체와 과정 자체가 주는 즐거움이 없어져버린다는 생각이 들었거든요. 자동화 과정이 주는 결과의 만족도가 반드시 어떤 업그레이드는 아닐 수도 있는 거겠죠. 나중에는 제가 카트에 타고 있으면 친구가 이걸 붙잡고 방향전환도 해주고 또 속력이 안떨어지도록 계속 끌어주기도 했습니다. 훨씬 더 편하게 탔죠. 이 도움을 만약 인간이 아닌 기계가 줬다면 과연 제가 그만큼의 즐거움을 얻을 수 있을지 잘 모르겠습니다. 어차피 기계가 끌건 사람이 끌건 움직이는 것 위에 타서 누리는 즐거움의 정도는 비슷할텐데 말이죠. 유튜브에서는 아버지가 자식이 탄 세발 자전거를 끌고 가주는 영상들이 있는데 참 별거 아닌데도 아이들은 즐거워합니다. 자신이 누리는 즐거움이 누군가의 노동에서 나온다는 걸 직관적으로 느끼기 때문에 감사의 마음과 유희로서의 쾌락이 합쳐진 결과일까요? 그런데 그 또래의 아이들은 딱히 고마워할 줄 모릅니다. 그냥 순수하게 즐기는거죠. 놀이공원에 다녀온 이후에도 부모가 태워주는 목마나 어부바는 여전히 좋을 겁니다. 모든 조건이 인간과 동일한 안드로이드가 아이에게 동일한 서비스를 할 때 아이가 똑같은 만족을 느낄 수 있을까요? 전 이 부분에 대해 긍정도 부정도 하기 어렵네요. 왜 인간이 다른 인간에게 봉사를 하는 데서 더 큰 만족감을 느끼는지 궁금해지더군요. 인간미, 유대감 - 이라는 추상적인 단어로 과연 그 즐거움의 정체를 결론지을 수 있을지.... 저는 서비스업에 인간이 불필요하게 혹사당한다고 생각하는데 저 정체불명의 만족감이 인간의 욕구라면 기계문명의 진화에도 서비스업은 멸종하지 않을수 있을지도요. 왜 나는 아버지가 자동차를 태워주는 것보가 훨씨 더 더디고 시시한 세발자전거 끌어주기에 신을 내는지 아리송합니다. 로봇은 일방적으로 희생하거나 베풀도록 프로그램되어 있을 거기 때문에 사람 같이 생긴 로봇이 카트를 끌어 주거나 휠체어를 밀어주고 그러면 철제덩어리에게 애정이 생길 것 같아요.
그리고 로봇은 일체의 편견이 없기 때문에 인간의 악한 본성이 더 부각되어 인간을 더욱 외면하고 로봇이랑 더 가깝게 지내게 될 지도 모를 일이에요.
