게임에서 서사의 상충, 혹은 루도내러티브라는 부분을 최근 문제삼고 있다고 합니다. 하루이틀 일은 아닌데, 그냥 최근에 좋은 RPG들이 연달아 나오다 보니 마니아 사이에서 이런 논란이 다시금 나오는 것 같네요. 원래 RPG 플레이어가 좀 그렇습니다. 꼭 하지 말라는 거 하면서 왜 게임보고 상호작용 안되냐고 따짐 ㅋㅋㅋ 루도내러티브란 쉽게 말하면 게임에서 주장하는 주제와 정작 게이머가 하는(느끼는) 부분이 다를 때 몰입을 저해받는 것을 말하는데요. 가장 극단적인 예시를 두 개 들라면 아마 인간과 동물의 교감을 추구하지만 정작 게임에선 다양한 동물학대와 밀렵 및 학살ㅋ을 일삼는 포켓몬스터, 그리고 반전과 자성을 요구하지만 정작 플레이는 x새끼가 되어서 무고한 사람들을 신나게 "뜯어"버리는 스펙 옵스 더 라인이 있겠습니다. 이런 게임들을 보고 플레이어들은 이렇게 말하곤 하죠. 강제로 이런 플레이를 시켜놓고 왜 딴 소리를 하느냐? 이건 허수아비 치는 거고 따라서 게임이 잘못한 것이며 따라서 이 게임은 쓰레기다! 근데 이런 "불쾌함"은 특히 게임에서 의도된 서사가 콕 집어서 "플레이어를" 겨낭하고 있을 때 유독 심하게 나타납니다. 당장 위에 적었지만 포켓몬스터야말로 이 서사 상충 현상의 가장 극단적인 예시이지만, 이 부분이 불쾌하단 "이유"로 똥겜 취급하는 사람은 한 명도 없습니다. 더구나 대화 시스템이 멋으로만 존재하고 의미 있는 선택지가 존재하지 않아 RPG장르 사상 최악의 쓰레기 게임 중 하나로 기록되는 폴아웃 3 역시, "선택지를 주지 않았다"는 데서 객관적 비판 이상의 정서적 불쾌함을 느낀 사람은 거의 없죠. 당장 저조차 객관적인 차원에서 폴아웃 3를 쓰레기로 평가하는 거지, (RPG의 완성도라는 기준이면 누구라도 그렇게 하는 거고요) 오히려 제 개인으로서는 이 게임을 대단히 사랑하고 즐겁게 플레이하거든요. 핵전쟁 이후 버려진 소년소녀 일대기가 재미없을 리가. 혹은 반대로 세기의 걸작으로 평가된 내러티브 및 퍼즐 게임의 역작 [리븐] 그리고 거론할 필요조차 없는 그 게임 [둠]에서조차 상충됨을 느끼는 플레이어가 정말로 없느냐 하면 그렇지만도 않습니다. 리븐의 악당은 물론 천하의 개상민이지만, 파고들면 그에게도 공감할 만한 면이 있고 따라서 경우에 따라 그에게 도와주는 선택지가 있을 법도 하거든요. 근데 게임이 그걸 안 시켜주면 간혹 가다 나온다는 그런 변태 플레이어는 리븐을 두고 뭐라고 생각하겠습니까. 둠이 과거에 "악마와 대화가 불가능하므로 똥겜!"이라는 평가를 받은 적이 있다는 역사적 사실 또한 생각해봅시다. 근데 스펙옵스 더 라인을 또 다른 정점으로 해서 그 밑으로 포진한 논란의 게임들, 그러니까 바이오쇼크, 라오어, [파크라이, 디스 워 오브 마인,] 그리고 구조는 좀 다르지만 역시 루도내러티브 논란에 꼭 끼어들어가는 [DOA 익스트림 비너스] 같은 게임들을 쭉 뜯어보면 결국 논란의 진짜 핵심은 서사가 어쩌고 하는 고풍스러운 얘기가 아니에요. [예끼 게임 네 이놈, 왜 나한테 시비거느냐? 감히 킹반인 소비자님을 게임 따위가 불쾌하게 해?] 이쪽이 진짜 논란이 생기는 이유인 겁니다. 서사의 상충 현상이 생기는 이유에 대해 나무위키나 IGN 같은 데서는 이렇게 분석하곤 합니다. 게임이 의도하는 타겟층이 원래 있는데, 그들의 수가 적으므로 다수 게이머가 요구하는 말초적 요소를 포함하게 되므로 두 의도가 상충하는 것이다. 이 논리대로라면 서사의 상충은 주로 스케일이 작은 선형 게임, 그러면서도 인기 제작사가 주도해서 만드는 소위 AAA게임에서 자주 일어나는 현상이겠죠. 하지만 앞서 언급된 게임 중에 대규모 오픈월드를 지향하는 파 크라이 시리즈, 그리고 상대적으로 중소 제작사에 속하는 11비트의 게임 역시 서사의 상충 논란이 이어지고 있다는 점은 이런 분석에 대한 설득력을 떨어지게 만듭니다. 더구나 이 분석대로 루도내러티브를 바라보았을 때 나오는 논리적인 결론이 뭐냐면..... 그렇잖습니까? 루도내러티브를 피해야 한다면, 세상의 모든 게임은 게이머를 가르치려고 들어서는 안 됩니다. 그들의 턱과 배를 긁어주며 어이구 이쁘다 어이구 잘한다 해줘야 됩니다. 혹은 말초적인 요소가 들어가선 안 됩니다. 모죄리 포인트 앤 클릭을 베이스 컨트롤로 삼은 인터랙션과 그에 맞는 그래픽으로 퇴화해야 한단 얘깁니다. 폭력적인 사람도 나오면 안 되고 곱상한 남캐가 나와도 안 되고 수영복 입은 미녀가 바닷가에 있어도 안 되며 반대로 현실적인 외모와 현실적인 복장을 갖춘 든-든하고 용감한 여전사가 주인공으로 나와도 안 되는 세상이라니. 총조차도 안 쏘는 레벨어썰트가 되고 버추얼캅이 됩시다 이소리임. 그마저도 아니면 그냥 루도내러티브는 게임의 숙명이다! 하고 쿨하게 쌩까거나 말이에요. 게임은 그럼 여기서 발전을 멈추어도 괜찮은 겁니까? 저는 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 대신 갠적으론 게임의 루도내러티브가 생기는 이유, 그리고 극복해야 할 관점으로서 레딧 겜창들이나 몇몇 겜잘알들이 거론하는 "틀의 한계(패러다임 리미테이션)"라는 이론을 더 지지하고 있습니다. 애초에 말이죠. 게임에서 플레이어가 할 수 있는 일은 어떤 게 있습니까? 총을 쏘거나 이웃과 인사를 나누거나 지나가는 강아지 배 쓰다듬어 주는 그런 거 말고요, "플레이어"가 하는 거는 어떤 게 있습니까? 그렇죠. 패드 잡는 겁니다. 혹은 키보드 키 누르고 마우스 클릭하는 거죠. 키마가 패드보다는 다양한 조작을 지원할 수 있지만, 결국 조합할 수 있는 키조작의 수는 어디까지나 이론상 500여가지 남짓. 이래선 반짝거리기, 흩어지기, 흐르기, 녹기, 줄어들기, 쪼개지기, 납작해지기, 끓기는커녕 이 모든 걸 제외한 인간의 현실 행동조차 100% 반영하는 게 불가능합니다. 그나마도 이론상 그렇다는 거고 보통의 게임은 용량상 기획상 혹은 플레이하는 게이머의 편의상 조작키를 500가지는 고사하고 50가지도 나눠 배치하는 경우가 흔친 않죠. 단지 게임에 꼭 필요한 행동을 그룹화하고, 해당 그룹을 휴리스틱하게 처리해줄 한 가지 키 컨트롤을 부여할 뿐. 사실 그걸 잘 하는 게임이 좋은 게임이기도 하고요 ㅋㅋㅋ 게임이 이러니 게임 속 캐릭터가 할 수 있는 일 또한 많아봤자 얼마나 많겠습니까? 문장력이 부족해서 늘여썼지만 결국 게임 속 캐릭터가 할 수 있는 행동의 가짓수란 건 컨트롤러 버튼 개수에 달렸단 소립니다. 제아무리 많아봤자 현실에서 플레이어가 게임에 요구할 법한 행동을 60억 가지의 시나리오에서 100% 반영해줄 수 있는 정도는 못 된단 소리고요. 그리고 이 조작의 메커니즘이 갖는 현실적인 제약은 곧 게임의 디자인의 제약에도 일정한 영향을 끼칩니다. 그게 틀이 한계를 가지는 메커니즘입니다. 패러다임이 물론 컨트롤 하나만 가지고 만들어지진 않지만, 그래픽 또한 그래픽 나름대로, 용량의 문제도 나름대로, 과거 작품의 행적 또한 나름대로 틀의 한계를 형성하는 데에 기여하죠. 넵. 과거에 어떤 게임이 있었고 없었고 하는 것조차 틀의 한계가 됩니다. 최근 들어 3D 게임 치고 키마에서 ASDW 키 안 써도 괜찮은 게임 있었습니까? 이건 컨트롤의 한계인 동시에 하프라이프의 벽이기도 한 겁니다. 그러니 게임이 디자인된단 건 바로 이런 틀의 한계 속에서도 그나마 게이머가 혹은 제작자 본인이 가장 재미있겠다 싶은 것들을 엮어서 만들어내는 과정을 뜻하기도 합니다. 그리고 그 범위가 무엇인지는 대부분 검증되어 있죠. 인풋-아웃풋이 즉각적이면서 도식화가 간단한 것들. 시뮬레이션이면 UI 입력. 액션이면 싸움박질, 혹은 달리기, 뛰기, 날기 뭐 그런 것들 말입니다. 다시 말해, 게임에 독특한 이야기가 있는데도 플레이는 진부하게 만들었다는 게 아닙니다. 거꾸로 게임이라는 매체에, 우리가 알게 모르게 적용했거나 압박받아 온 패러다임이 애당초 있고 그로 인해 생긴 한계 속에서 당대의 게임들이 개발되고 있었기 때문에, 게임들이 파보면 다 거기서 거기라는 게 현실이라는 겁니다. 현세대 게임 중 가장 진보한 작품인 야숨과 세키로조차 링크가 말을 하거나 늑대가 후시기리로 평타 쓰게 만들진 못한다 이거죠. 다만 이야기만큼은 (가능하면 게임하고 유기적으로 연결되어야 하지만, 그 정도의 일체화를 추구하지 않거나 못하는 제작자도 있는 만큼) 게임의 플레잉 메커니즘과 달리 일방적으로 게이머한테 때려박을 수 있다 보니 그만큼 자유로워질 수도 있었던 겁니다. 그 덕분에 플레이는 똑같이 진부한데 (혹은 더 구려터지기도 하는데) 유독 스토리가 혼자 좋은 의미로 튀어서 게임을 캐리해내는 쾌거를 이루기도 하는 거고, 어떤 때는 반대로 게이머를 엿먹여서 돌아버리게 만들기도 하는 거고요. 다시 정리하면 게임에서 서사가 상충되는 근본적인 이유는, 일방적으로 게이머에게 강요할 수 있기에 거꾸로 작가가 원하는 무엇이든 시도해볼 수 있는 이야기의 서사가 갖는 자유로움을, 게이머의 행동을 전제하여 상호작용을 이루어야 하는, 그리고 상호작용 안에서 정형화되고 도식화된 행동의 구현, 그로 인한 성공과 실패, 그 끝에 생기는 감동과 쾌감까지도 구현해야 하는 행동의 서사가 따라잡지 못해서 생기는 겁니다. 더 나아가면 이는 "플레이어가 바라는 행동을 게임이 미처 성숙된 플레잉 메커니즘의 형태로 준비하지 못했다(혹은 [제작자가 그냥 그럴 생각조차 할 능력이 없었다])"는 데서 발생하는 문제이자, 게임이 가진 막강한 힘인 "체험"이 한편으로는 여전히 개선하고 나아져야 할 부분이 많은, 어려운 성장 과정을 거치고 있다는 증거이기도 합니다. 물론 이 말을 뒤집으면, 앞으로도 게임은 게이머들의 사랑 여부에 따라 더욱 발전할 수 있는 가능성이 있다는 소리도 됩니다. 게임의 전성기는 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. ㅋㅋㅋ 지금은 좀 뜸하지만 과거 시대에 게임기가 만들어지면, 꼭 같이 만들어진 하드웨어가 하나 있습니다. 컨트롤러를 가리키는 거야 당연한 소리고 ㅋ 그 중에서도 좀 더 구체적으로 말해서, [총]을 반드시 같이 만들었어요. 총을 쏘는 행위는 누가 뭐래도 패드로는 대체할 수 없었기 때문입니다. 그건 지금도 마찬가지죠. 그냥 다양한 디스플레이 환경에 99% 대응가능한 광학입력장치를 만드는 게 귀찮거나 힘드니까 이전보다 덜 만들 뿐. 그리고 지금 게이머들은 생소한 이야길지도 모르지만, 80년대와 90년대초 서양에서 만든 게임은 거의 대부분이 텍스트 기반의 입력을 받았습니다. 그러니까 왼쪽으로 가려면 왼쪽 화살표를 누르는 게 아니라 명령어 창에 "left"를 쳐야 했단 소립니다. 지금 생각하면 귀찮고 힘들 것 같은데, 그 때는... 당연히 똑같이 귀찮고 힘들다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 감수할 만한 가치는 있었어요. 언제 어디서든 "left"를 시도해볼 수 있고, "examine"을 실행해서 반환되는 정보를 검토할 수 있었거든요. 타이핑을 일일이 쳐야 하니 게임의 장르 역시 액션보단 워 게임과 (이후 RPG로 불리게 될)모험물, 그리고 소규모 전술 게임이 주류를 이뤘습니다만, 지금과는 다른 비직관적이되 풍부한 조작 체계 속에서 과거의 게임은 수많은, 지금과 비교해도 뒤지지 않을 만큼 수많은 상호작용을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 거듭되는 상호작용의 성공과 실패가, 바로 [게임]이 아닌 [게이머]의 서사가 되곤 했죠. 플스 1 말기였나, 아니면 플스 2부터 본격적으로 그랬나는 모르겠습니다만, 십자키와 ○□△× 그리고 트리거뿐이던 플스 패드에 아날로그 레버가 하나도 아니고 무려 두 개가 달린 순간도 있었습니다. 그 날 이후부터 콘솔 3D 게임들은 시점의 한계를 벗어던질 수 있었습니다. ....아니 뭐 시점 조작을 레버로 한단 개념 자체야 마리오64와 시오가 최초로 제시한 건 맞는데, 이쪽은 패드가 조금 꼴통이었어야죠;; 최근에는 데스 스트랜딩과 레드 데드 리뎀션 2가, 부족한 버튼을 이렇게 저렇게 조합하면 손가락은 좀 불편할지언정 어디까지 행동의 범위를 늘려나갈 수 있는지에 대한 좋은 시사점을 던져주기도 했습니다. 물론 두 게임 모두 취향만 맞으면 돈 주고 사도 아깝지 않을 만큼의 완성도를 갖춘 갓겜이기도 하죠. 이때는 이렇게 저때는 저렇게 변화를 거듭했습니다만, 게임은 계속 달라지고 발전하고 있었다는 얘깁니다. 앞으로도 게임은 자기가 할 수 없는 것을 하나씩, 할 수 있는 걸로 바꿔나가겠죠. 물론 과거 컨트롤의 대세였던 단어 타이핑이 지금은 도태된 것처럼 발전 과정에서 실패하고 잃어버리는 것도 많겠지만요 ㅋㅋ 그래도 게임은 계속 달라지고, 조금씩은 발전하고 있습니다. 그래서 게임이 발전을 거듭하면, 미래의 게임은 루도내러티브, "게임은 나한테 A를 시키는데 나는 정작 B를 하고 있네? 이뭐엿?"의 굴레를 벗어날 수 있을까요?
