최근의 아프간 관련 이슈나 광복절을 전후한 소소한 논쟁들을 보고 생각나는 것을 조금 적어봤습니다. 21세기를 사는 한국인인 저는 한복에 대해 아는 것이 거의 없습니다. 입어본 적도 몇 번 없어요. 아마 한국의 전통문화에 관심이 있는 외국인이 저보다 한복에 대해 더 자세히 알 겁니다. 저는 사물놀이나 가야금의 음색도 즐길 줄 모르고, 한옥의 처마와 추녀의 곡선을 보며 감탄할 줄도 모릅니다. 먹는 음식들도 거의 다 연원이 20세기 이전으로는 내려가지 않는 것들이고요. 제가 이렇듯 과거와 전통에 대해 무지한 사람이 된 이유는, 아주 평범한 한국인이기 때문입니다. 우리가 일상에서 접하는 것들 중에서 우리의 과거와 뿌리가 닿아 있는 것은 정말 정말 드뭅니다. 예컨대, 한국은 민주주의 공화국이고 그 뿌리와 줄기는 고대 그리스, 영국의 의회정치, 프랑스 혁명, 독일의 바이마르 공화국입니다. 한국의 법체계는 독일과 프랑스를 부모로 삼은 대륙법이고요. 제가 즐겨보는 만화책을 찍어내는 인쇄기의 직계 조상은 구텐베르크이고, 만신창이 병자인 제 몸을 지켜주는 건강보험의 아버지는 비스마르크입니다. 누군가는 '우리의 것'에 대한 저의 무지를 두고 어려서 그렇다고 말할 지도 모르겠지만, 광복의 해에 태어나셨던 어르신들이 올해로 76세이십니다. 그 분들 또한 젊은 시절 목격했던 과거의 잔영에 대해 증언하실 수는 있어도, 과거 그 자체를 증거하시지는 못 합니다. 몇몇 분야에서 전통에 대한 지식과 경험을 이어나가고 있는 분들이 계시긴 하나 극소수이고요. 물론 이건 한국만의 문제가 아니라 21세를 사는 국가들 중 유럽, 미국을 제외한 대다수의 국가들이 겪는 현상입니다. 하지만 한국은 그 중에서도 유난히 '역사'를 느끼기 어려운 나라죠. 우리의 역사는 대체로 잘 보존되어 있긴 하지만 절대 다수가 박물관과 학자들의 연구실에만 존재합니다. 여기서 제가 예전에 썼던 글(https://new.redtea.kr/pb/pb.php?id=recommended&no=1098)의 일부를 다시 가져와 보자면, "E.H.카는 역사를 가리켜 '생물학에서 부정하는 획득형질의 축적' 이라고 했습니다. 평생을 불 앞에서 살아온 조리사의 손에 박인 굳은살과 숙련된 칼솜씨는 그의 생물학적 자손에게 유전되지 않겠지만 그가 만들고 사용한 조리법, 맛의 기억 등은 동업자, 가게의 손님 등에게 전해지며 계속 발전해나갑니다.(중략)이런 관점에서 본다면, 한국 문화계가 그토록 간절하게 한국적인 무언가를 찾으려 한다는 것은 너무나도 견고한 생물학적 유대감과 반비례하는 희박한 획득형질의 계승을 가진 나라, 과거를 도려낸 나라의 주민이 겪는 정체성의 혼란일 것입니다." 엄밀히 말하면 우리가 잘 모를 뿐이지 우리의 획득형질은 여전히 우리 곁에 남아있고, 무엇보다도 한국어와 한글이라는 가장 중요한 정신적 유산이 이어져 오긴 합니다. 그러나 과거의 유산을 활용해 돈을 벌어들이는 중국, 일본 같은 옆나라들에 비하면 뭔가 가슴이 뻥 뚫린 듯한 공허함이 느껴집니다. 한국에서 과거의 지혜를 활용해 돈을 버는 사람이라고 하면 끽해야 간장게장 식당 주인 정도일테니까요. 그리고 이렇게 된 이유는 한국이 잘 사는 나라가 되었기 때문입니다. 일제강점기와 6.25 이후의 한국은 국가를 건설하는 과정에서 대대적인 과거 지우기에 돌입했습니다. '초가집을 슬레이트로' 라는 구호가 그 시절을 대변하지요. 박정희는 국가재건최고회의 의장 시절에 책까지 써가면서 조선의 붕당정치를 비판하고 '악의 유산을 청산해야 한다' 라고 주장했습니다. 아, 그런데 미리 말해두면 이게 다 박정희 때문이다 같은 소리는 아니에요. 그 당시엔 그게 국민적 감정이었을 겁니다. 이승만부터가 조선왕조에 대해 '옛 왕족들 귀국이라고?! 어림도 없다! 암!' 이라고 외쳤었고요. 그 이전인 일제강점기 시절부터 이미 과거에 대한 반발과 회의적 인식은 강했죠. 심지어 조선 후기 실학자들조차 '이 나라는 이래서 글렀다!' 같은 말들을 달고 살았으니까요. 당시 우리가 잘 살기 위해서 필요했던 것은, 이미 한 번 나라를 식민지로 이끌었던 실패한 과거의 유산이 아니라 현재를 지배하는 유럽, 미국의 기술과 지적 자산이었습니다. 그리고 무엇보다도 이미 우리와 같은 길을 통해 강대국의 반열에 올랐던 일본의 경험과 지식을 절실히 필요로 했지요. 미국에서 돈 빌려오고, 일본에서 참 많은 것을 배워다가 공장을 짓는 등의 과정 끝에 한국은 어찌어찌 잘 사는 나라가 되었습니다. 우리는 이것을 한강의 기적이라고 부르면서 '못 사는 나라'들과 구분되는 우월감을 통해 식민지배의 충격을 씻어냈으며 이를 새로운 국가 정체성으로 삼았습니다. 우리가 쌓은 부가 곧 우리가 옳았음을 증명해주는 신성한 증거라고 믿으면서 말이죠. 그러면서 한 편으로 한국이 가진 오래된 역사를 묶어서 '반만년 역사를 가진 한민족의 기적' 이라는 구호가 만들어집니다. 하지만 경제발전과 역사 라는 두 가지 존재는 서로 섞일 수 없는 물과 기름 이었어요. 우리를 잘 살게 해준 것은 어디까지나 외국에서 들여온 기술과 자본과 지식이었지 우리가 물려받은 획득형질이 아니었거든요. 직설적으로 말하면, 초가집을 밀어내고 시멘트를 바르는 것을 국가적 과제로 삼아서 성공한 나라가 이제와서 초가집에 담긴 과학과 지혜를 이야기 해본들 그게 무슨 설득력이 있느냐는 것입니다. 이렇게 획득형질을 잃고 자격지심과 자가당착에 빠진 우리들은 '한국인' 이라는 정체성을 만들기 위해 또다른 징표인 '혈연'에 매달려야 했습니다. 한국 역사상에 나타난 세계 최초의 무엇이나 외국에서 활동하는 한국계 혈통의 유명인에게 한국이 유달리 열광하는 것도 이런 이유입니다. 이븐 할둔의 말을 빌린다면 '혈연이라는 환상에 젖어 연대의식을 상실하고도 자신들을 우월한 존재라고 믿는' 상태라고나 할까요. 이는 마치 '나는 가난한 집에서 태어나 오로지 내 힘만으로 돈 벌어서 성공했어' 라고 자랑하는 사람이, 다른 한 편으로는 '우리 집은 대대로 잘 사는 명문가였어' 라고도 주장해야 하는 모순이었습니다. 이 모순을 돌파하는 가장 편리한 방법은 모든 잘못을 '못난 아버지' 에게 덮어 씌우는 것입니다. 즉, 우리 집은 대대로 잘 나가는 집안이었지만 우리 아버지가 다 말아먹어서 나는 땡전 한 푼 없이 내 능력만으로 성공했다 라고 주장하는 것이죠. 그럼 그 못난 아버지는 누구인가? 누군가에는 흥선대원군이고, 누군가에게는 '정조를 독살한'(그들이 그렇게 믿는) 한국판 프리메이슨 노론세력이고, 누군가에게는 조선시대 그 자체입니다. 물론 이는 모두 옹색한 면피수단이었을 뿐이죠. 현실을 올바르게 설명하지 못 하는 이론의 뒤에는 항상 음모론이나 비틀린 사상이 따라오곤 합니다. 한국이 잘 사는 나라가 된 것이 곧 한국의 우월함의 증거다, 라는 주장은 자연스럽게 '따라서 경제 발전에 이바지 하지 못 한 과거의 획득형질들은 무가치 하지 않은가?' 라는 주장으로 이어집니다. 오늘날 일부 극우 인사들이 한국은 원래 별볼일 없는 나라였고, 20세기 이전 한반도 역사는 현대에 아무런 가치가 없으며, 한국은 미국 덕분에 독립했고 일본 덕에 잘 살게 된 나라이다, 라는 주장을 하는 것처럼 말이죠. 이런 관점 하에 나라 팔아먹은 매국노가 옹호받는 실로 어처구니 없는 일도 일어나고요. 인터넷에서 이른바 '일뽕' 이라 불리는, 한국을 비하하고 일본을 추종하는 무리들이나, 그에 반발하여 '한민족의 우월함'을 까마득한 과거에서 찾으려는 유사역사학의 신도들 또한 이 서글픈 모순이 낳은 사생아들일 겁니다. 요즘들어 '나만 아니면 돼'를 당당히 주장하며 윤리와 도덕을 조롱하는 풍조가 만연한 몇몇 커뮤니티에서 자국을 비하하는 이들이 늘어나는 것 또한 이런 이유겠지요. 따라서 이 모순을 올바르게 해소하려면 '아무 것도 없는 상태에서 일군 기적'과 '그 기적이 증거하는 한국의 우월함' 이라는 두 가지 전제부터 내려놓아야 할 것입니다. 우리는 물려받은 게 없는 나라가 아니었고, 우리가 잘 살게 된 것은 '한민족의 우월함'이 아니라 내재적 형질과 외부의 환경, 그리고 결정적으로 운이 따라준 결과라는 것을 선선히 받아들이는 것입니다. 대한민국 정부 수립 당시, 한국인들의 절대 다수는 역사적으로 한반도에 살던 이들의 자손이었고, 한국어를 썼으며, 자신을 한국인이라고 생각했습니다. 한국 정부는 무엇이 한국인인지 고민할 필요가 없었어요. 이것이 식민 지배에서 벗어난 다른 국가들에 비하면 얼마나 축복 받은 환경이었는지, 이 환경이 어떠한 역사적 배경에서 비롯되었는지는 굳이 말할 필요가 없을 겁니다. 그러니까 이제와서 '우리는 맨땅 맨주먹에서 성공했다' 라고 말하는 것은 '우리 부모님은 나한테 집만 사주고 아무 도움도 안 줬어!' 라고 말하는 거랑 비슷한 소리일테죠. 그리고 새삼 당연한 이야기지만, 국가나 체제의 우열은 단순히 부의 상하로 구분되지 않습니다. 중국이나 사우디가 한국보다 잘 사는 것이 한국보다 우월해서 그렇다고 주장하면 아무도 동의하지 않겠죠. 싱가포르가 강소국이 된 비결은 리콴유의 '강인하고 청렴한 지도력'이 아니라 배들이 거쳐갈 수 밖에 없는 위치에 자리한 입지조건 때문입니다. 그러니 지금 한국이 선진국의 말석에 앉아 있는 것을, 과거로부터 유리되고 돌출된 기적 같은 상황이라고 인식할 것이 아니라 그저 지금 우리가 서 있는 자리가 지난 발자국으로부터 어떻게 연결되어 있고 어떻게 관계 맺고 있는지를 담담히 돌아보는 것이 훨씬 더 영양가 있는 일입니다. 미약하게나마 오늘과 연결되어 있는 과거를 찾아내어 쓸만한 것들을 건져올리는 것 역시 훌륭한 일일테고요. 흔히 오늘날 떡볶이의 조상을 궁중 떡볶이라고 합니다. 그러나 전 이 말을 신뢰하지 않아요. 정말 그 시절의 궁중 떡볶이라는 것이 지금의 떡볶이와 비슷했는지는 둘째치더라도, 과거의 궁중 떡볶이가 어떻게 해서 민간에 퍼지고 대를 이어 발전하며 지금의 떡볶이에 이르렀는지 그 과정에 대해선 누구도 이야기하지 않거든요. 하지만 그렇다고 해서 떡볶이가 전통과 아무 관계 없이 하늘에서 뚝 떨어진 음식인가? 저는 그렇게도 생각하지 않습니다. 오늘 날의 떡볶이는 미국에서 들어온 밀가루 덕에 밀떡이 흔해진 시대적 배경을 타고 대중화된 음식입니다만, 여기에는 오랜 세월 떡과 고추장, 고춧가루 등을 먹어온 한국인의 미각과 관습이 바닥에 깔려 있습니다. 따라서 궁중 떡볶이를 어거지로 끌어올 필요도 없이 떡볶이는 한국의 음식이 맞을 거에요. 저는 우리가 과거를 보는 시선 또한 이래야 한다고 생각합니다. 그리고 어차피 이제는 국가간의 장벽이 허물어지는 시대입니다. '포도주 잘 담그는 것은 우리의 전통' 이라고 자부하던 와이너리들이 신출내기들의 와인에게 박살이 나고, 인간의 두뇌조차 딥러닝을 활용한 AI들에 의해 모사되는 시대에 우리 것 네 것을 가르며 우월감이나 열패감을 느낄 이유가 없어요. 이런 의미에서, 저는 한국이 그간 과거를 잘라내며 성공해온 경험들이 미래에 도움이 될 수도 있을 거라고 믿습니다. 제가 음악에 대해 아는 건 없습니다만, BTS가 성공한 요인은 세계에서 먹히는 음악이 뭔지를 연구한 결과물이지 '한국의 것'에 대한 집착이나 계승이 아니었겠죠. 최근들어 한국은 출산율도 뚝 떨어지고, 다문화 가정이 늘어납니다. 한국은 가까운 미래에 그동안 해본 적이 없었던 고민인 '무엇이 한국인인가'를 두고 사회적 논쟁을 벌이며 막대한 비용을 써야 할 것입니다. 이 논쟁의 방향이 어디를 향하건 간에, 부디 그 끝에 있는 것이 혈연에 대한 집착이 아니라 획득형질의 올바른 조화가 되기를 바랍니다. 바로 그것이 지난 60여년 간 우리가 살아온 방법, '과거를 도려낸 나라의 주민' 으로서 사는 법의 순기능이겠지요. 죄송한데 이 글에는 동의하기 어렵네요. 획득형질의 올바른 조화? 그게 대체 왜 중요한지 모르겠습니다. 이 글로 미루어보건데 그게 중요한 이유는 그게 사회구성원 모두에게 도움이 되어서가 아니라 그게 글쓴분에게 감정적인 만족감을 가져다 주기 때문이 아닌가 합니다.
가만 보면 그런 사람들 많습니다. 사회가 이러저러하게 바귀어야 한다~~ 근데 그 이유를 가만히 살펴보면 그 근거는 해딩 방향으로 가는 것이 사회 구성원 모두에게 도움이 되어서가 아니라 해당 방향으로 가는 것이 내 개인의 감정을 만족시키기 때문이죠. 그리고 당연하겠지만 이런 글은 설득력이 매우 떨어집니다.
