 (위 짤은 본문의 내용과 관계가 없...지는 않습니다.) 1998년, 한국에서는 일본 문화 개방을 앞두고 젊은 작가들이 뭉쳐서 '야컴 815 코믹스' 라는 야심찬 기획을 내놓았습니다. 일본 문화 개방 이전에 이미 드래곤볼이 상륙하여 만화계를 뒤흔들어 놓았지만 이제 최소한의 빗장마저 열리려 하는 것에 위기감을 느끼고 만화 독립을 선언한다는 것이 목적이었죠. 한국 만화의 전설 문정후 씨가 바로 여기에 소속되었던 작가입니다. 이러한 시도가 어떤 결말을 맞이했는지는 굳이 말하지 않아도 아실 겁니다. 한국에서 만화 시장은 짧은 호황을 누리다가 00년도를 넘기며 한국 만화 일본 만화 가릴 것 없이 무너져 내렸고 한국 만화 독립이라는 구호는 허망하게 스러졌습니다. 이러한 시도가 어떠한 것이었느냐를 논하지는 않겠습니다. 다만 815 코믹스가 제창했던 '한국 만화' 라는 말을 곱씹어 봅시다. 한국 만화, 한국적인 만화는 무엇일까요? 조선시대를 배경으로 한 만화? 아니면 한국인이 등장하는 만화? 일본식 그림체를 쓰지 않은 만화? 하나같이 명확한 답이 되지 않습니다. 그러나 이것은 꼭 만화만의 문제가 아닙니다. '한국적인 작품' 이라는 말은 만화건 소설이건 영화건 문화상품을 볼 때마다 참으로 숱하게 등장하면서도 정의된 바 없이 창작자들을 괴롭히는 단어거든요. 한국의 전통 속에서 잉태되어야 한국적일까? 한국의 문화나 역사를 소재로 해야 할까? 한국과 어떤 관계를 맺고 있고 외국과는 확연히 구분되는 한국만의 무언가가 있어야 할까? 결론부터 말하자면, 저는 이 무책임하고도 복잡한 단어를 정의하기 위해 반드시 어렵고 지루한 과정을 거칠 필요는 없다고 생각합니다. 한 가지 예를 들어보죠. 영국에서 추리소설을 쓰는 작가라면 코난 도일과 애거서 크리스티를 비롯한 위대한 이들이 쌓아놓은 추리소설계의 문법을 밑천으로 삼아 소설을 쓸 수 있을 것이고 SF 작가라면 닥터 후가 남겨준 독자들을 소비계층으로 이용할 수 있습니다. 비틀즈와 영국의 락 음악계는 뭐 말할 필요가 없겠죠. 좀 더 관점을 넓혀보면 BBC가 드라마 셜록을 만든 것이나 2012년 런던 올림픽에서 헤이 주드가 울려퍼지고 성화 주자로 닥터 후가 등장한 것 역시 영국인들이 쌓아온 문화적 자산의 활용이라고 할 수 있을 겁니다. 그러니 여기서 '영국적인 작품' 이라는 잣대 하에 추리소설과 락 음악을 영국의 전통과 결부시키려 하거나, 다른 나라와 구분되는 영국만의 것인양 주장하는 건 쓸데없는 짓거리일 것입니다. E.H.카는 역사를 가리켜 '생물학에서 부정하는 획득형질의 축적' 이라고 했습니다. 평생을 불 앞에서 살아온 조리사의 손에 박인 굳은살과 숙련된 칼솜씨는 그의 생물학적 자손에게 유전되지 않겠지만 그가 만들고 사용한 조리법, 맛의 기억 등은 동업자, 가게의 손님 등에게 전해지며 계속 발전해나갑니다. 이렇게 쌓여온 특정 국가, 지역의 문화적 자산이 바로 그 나라의 색채가 되는 것이겠죠. 이런 관점에서 본다면, 한국 문화계가 그토록 간절하게 한국적인 무언가를 찾으려 한다는 것은 너무나도 견고한 생물학적 유대감과 반비례하는 희박한 획득형질의 계승을 가진 나라, 과거를 도려낸 나라의 주민이 겪는 정체성의 혼란일 것입니다. 그러니 한국적인 무언가를 찾고자 한다면 학술적인 토의를 거치는 것 보다는, 우리가 창고 안에 대충 때려박아둔 과거 속에서 쓸만한 것을 찾아내는 것이 훨씬 더 쉽고 간단하리라 생각합니다. '옆집은 할아버지 유산 덕에 잘 산다는데 우리 할아버진 뭐 하고 살았어?' 라는 질문에 대한 적절한 대답은 할아버지가 가졌던 직업을 말해주는 것이 아니라 '할아버지가 남겨주신 땅이 재개발 지구에 포함되었단다' 라는 것일테니까요. 그렇다면 '한국 만화'는 무엇이 있는가? 유감스럽게도 쉽게 대답을 하기 어렵습니다. 소설이 100년이 넘는 기간동안 한국어를 밑천삼아 자산을 쌓아온 반면 만화는 발전과정에서 일본 만화의 그림자가 너무나 짙었기에 한국 만화를 논한다는 건 아주 어렵고 조심스러운 일입니다. 그러나 다행스럽게도 한국 만화의 목록에 자랑스레 이름을 올릴 수 있는 만화들이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 그 목록에는 여러 이름들이 나올 수 있겠지만 저는 단연코 그 으뜸의 자리에는 고우영이 앉아야 한다고 생각합니다. 미리 말해두자면 이것은 고우영이 삼국지를 비롯한 고전이나 역사에서 소재를 얻어 만화를 그렸기 때문이 아닙니다. 그렇게 따진다면 한국적인 무언가는 그저 주구장창 갓 쓰고 도포 입고 다니던 시절의 이야기만 해야 한다는 것인데 그건 스스로 가능성의 영역을 좁게 한정짓는 소견일 뿐입니다. 무엇보다 그렇게 따지면 이두호, 윤승운 같은 이름들이 고우영에게 뒤질 이유가 없지요. 고우영이 한국적 만화의 자리에서 상석에 앉아야 하는 이유는 만화를 그려내는 문법에 있습니다. 고우영은 마치 전지적 작가 시점의 소설처럼 만화 컷에 '해설'을 집어넣어 캐릭터들의 심리를 해석하고 행동을 평가하는 등등의 헤살을 부려놓는데 이런 이야기 구조는 다른 만화에서 정말 찾아보기도 어렵고, 만화가에게 있어서 불편한 방식입니다. 이런 방식으로는 일반적으로 쓰이는 만화의 연출방법이나 이야기 전개 기법 등등을 거의 쓸 수가 없어요. 고우영 만화에 반전? 서술트릭? 치밀한 복선? 이런 게 있나요? 저는 못 봤습니다. 고우영 만화에는 갈등을 만들고 해소해 나간다거나, 독자가 궁금증을 품게 하고 뒤에 가서 해답을 주는 구도 자체가 좀처럼 나타나질 않아요. 고우영은 이야기 그 자체가 주는 정보에 더해서 작가의 해석과 의견, 해학 등을 이야기와 교묘히 결합시켜 이야기를 풀어나갑니다. 이것은 지금 우리에겐 생소한 것이지만 본디는 아주 오랫동안 우리의 과거 속에 자리잡고 있었습니다. 멀리는 판소리의 명창들이 그랬고, 가깝게는 무성영화 시절의 변사들이 그랬지요. 요즘 식으로 말하면 유튜브에 넘쳐나는 'xx 읽어주는 채널' 이나 인터넷 방송 같은 것이 비슷하겠네요. 지금은 우리가 잃어버린 과거의 자산을, 고우영은 먼지를 털어내고 새 옷을 입혀 우리에게 보여주었던 겁니다. 고우영이 삼국지를 비롯한 고전 소설에서 만화 소재를 즐겨찾았던 것도 이러한 이야기 방식과 같은 토양에서 자라났던, 궁합이 아주 좋은 소재이기 때문이었겠죠. 다만 여기에는 큰 문제점이 있는데, 너도 알고 나도 아는 고전을 소재로 하면 그 내용이 매우 뻔할 수 밖에 없습니다. 고전 소설이란 게 말이 좋아 고전이고 명작이지 문화 상품의 작법이 고도로 발전한 오늘날에 보기엔 구닥다리이기도 하고요. 그래서 고우영은 고전을 만화로 옮기는데에만 주력하는 것이 아니라 다양한 관점에서 작품의 방향성을 해체하고 재해석, 재배열하여 자신만의 매력적인 이야기를 만들어 냅니다. 거시적인 관점에서 이야기를 어떻게 조망할 것인지를 결정하고, 거대한 이야기의 흐름 속에 묻히기 쉽지만 충분히 있었음직한 이야기들을 끄집어 내어 독자들에게 현실감과 몰입감을 주고, 캐릭터들에게 다양한 방법으로 개성을 부여하고, 영웅의 사자후 뒤에 가려진 왜소한 사람의 마음을 짚어냅니다. 예를 들어 삼국지에서 제갈량이 관우를 제거했다는 고우영식 재해석이 꽤나 유명한데 사실 이건 빙산의 일각이죠. 진짜 대단한 것은 그러한 재해석을 전혀 어색하지 않게 캐릭터를 짜고 이야기를 풀어가는 솜씨입니다. 또, 삼국지나 초한지 같은 군담소설에서는 흔히 장수들의 무력과 책사들의 두뇌 싸움만 보게 마련이지만 고우영의 초한지에는 다양한 인간 군상들이 등장합니다. 긴 칼을 차고 다녀서 장도귀, 짱또끼라 불리며 진나라의 압정을 상징하는 진나라 병사들, 진시황릉의 노역 현장에서 매춘을 하던 여자의 유골, 항우의 진시황릉 도굴 당시 어두운 곳에 혼자 남겨져 미쳐버린 이름 없는 병사, 유방이 지명수배자가 되자 유방의 집을 찾아와 함정수사를 시도하는 진나라 병사 등등. 고우영의 만화에는 언제나 현실에서 유리된 영웅과 신화가 아니라 우리와 가까운 인간의 마음이 있죠. 이렇게 고전을 고전 그대로 놔두지 않는 고우영의 '버릇'은 정말 사소한 것에까지 미치는데, 고우영의 '500년'에 등장하는 원천석의 일화 한 토막을 보면 알 수 있습니다. 본래 전해지는 야사에 따르면 고려가 망하고 은둔했던 원천석이 조선 정통론과 다른 시각에서 여말선초의 이야기를 담은 역사서를 남겼고, 후손들이 이를 꺼내어 본 후 그 내용에 경악하여 불태워버렸다는 이야기입니다. 헌데 이 이야기가 고우영에게 걸리면 이렇게 변합니다. "원천석이 죽고 세월이 흐르자 후손들은 다같이 모여 묻혀있던 상자 속의 책을 파내어 보기로 했다. 그런데 친척 하나가 늦어서 그 자리에 미처 오지 못 했다. 후손들은 역사서의 내용을 보고 깜짝 놀라 이를 다시 묻어두려했지만 집안 어른이 말하기를 '만약 우리가 이걸 다시 묻어둔다면 잠시 후에 도착할 그 사람이 우리가 자기 몰래 보물을 파낸 후 시치미를 뗀다고 여겨 크게 따져묻고 주위에 알려 다시 파내려 할 것이다. 이 사실이 알려지면 우리는 모두 죽는다. 따라서 태워버리는 수 밖에 없다.' 그러자 모두가 수긍하고 책을 불태웠다." 이렇게 독자들이 '그걸 왜 태워? 그냥 숨기면 돼잖아?' 라고 생각할 틈도 주지 않고 너무나 자연스럽게 이야기의 구멍을 봉합해리는 것이 고우영의 만화 기법입니다. 그렇다면 고우영의 작품들 중에서 가장 빼어난 작품은 무엇일까? 스포츠도 아니고, 작품들 간에 우열을 논한다는 것은 매우 옹색한 일입니다만 그래도 저는 '고우영 수호지'를 꼽고 싶습니다. 정확히 말하면 70년대에 그려진 구판 수호지가 아니라 90년대에 들어서 다시 그려진 신판 수호지를 말합니다. 구판 수호지는 수집가들 사이에서 엄청난 가격에 팔리는데 그나마도 매물이 없어서 저는 본 적이 없어요. 일단 수호지 라는 소재부터가 고우영의 재주를 살리기에 아주 좋습니다. 같은 고전 군담소설들을 비교해보면, 삼국지는 거시적 시점에서 작가의 재해석을 한사코 거부하는 딱딱하고 획일적인 소재이고 초한지는 이야기의 구도가 양자 대립으로 짜여져 있어서 단조로워지기 쉬운 반면 수호지는 정말 엄청나게 다양한 인물들이 등장하는데다가 이야기의 뼈대도 흐릿하기에 얼마든지 작가의 재량을 끼워넣을 수가 있거든요. 그 대신 등장인물들이 쓸데없이 너무 많고 이야기가 번잡스럽다는 문제가 있는데, 그래서 고우영은 잡다한 이야기를 과감히 쳐내리고 캐릭터들 하나하나를 온갖 '만화적 수법'을 써서 재해석 하는 방법으로 문제를 해결했습니다. 108 악마 이야기는 한 컷으로 소개만 하고 넘어가버리고, 유당이 사당에서 잠을 자다가 잡혀오는 등의 쓸데없고 구질구질한 이야기는 없애버리고 전체적인 이야기의 구도는 어디까지나 '부정과 부패가 판치는 세상에서 살아가는 다양한 인간들의 선택과 군상극'을 중심에 둡니다. 시조를 읊듯이 글자수를 딱딱 맞춰서 대사를 날리는 유당, 물고기 같은 외모를 가지고 사투리를 쓰는 장순, 성질 더러운 한국군 행보관처럼 묘사된 노지심, 놀랍게도 박정희의 얼굴을 본따서 그려진 송강, 카이저 수염을 기른 대종...만화이기에 할 수 있는 다양한 기법들이 사용되어 캐릭터를 만들고 이야기를 풀어가죠. 극의 중간중간마다 현세를 사는 우리들이 공감하기 쉬운 소재를 가지고 현실을 빗대어 풍자하는 솜씨는 말할 것도 없이 뛰어나고요. 철종 황제의 행렬 뒤에 탐관오리들을 줄줄이 그려넣어서 '벼슬자리 살 때 빌린 돈 겨우 다 갚았네. 이제부터 버는 돈이 진짜 내 돈이지' 라는 대사를 넣고, 재상인 채경이 가진 훌륭한 문화적 소양을 칭찬하면서도 '그러나 불행하게도 이 분은 정치인이셔' 라고 일침을 놓으며, 장순이 어업계를 제패하는 과정을 조폭들의 구역다툼으로 묘사하여 '쐿가루 흩날리는 곳에는 반드시 파리가 끓어' 라고 설명하는 것이 좋은 예이죠. 원본에서 송강이 청풍산 산적에게 잡혀서 산 채로 간을 꺼내어질 위기에 놓이는 이야기를 비틀어서 3인의 산적 두목들이 허세를 부리기 위해 산 채로 간을 꺼내먹겠다고 큰소리를 치다가 진짜로 부하들이 살아있는 사람을 잡아오자 속으로 기겁을 하여 어떻게든 그 자리를 모면하려 꾀를 부리는 것으로 바꿔놓은 것에는 정말 감탄을 금할 수가 없습니다. 이렇게 그려진 고우영 수호지는 이야기 하나 하나가 원본인 '수호전'에 기대지 않은 것이 없고, '고우영이 그린 만화 수호지' 로서 홀로 서지 않은 것이 없습니다. 원본을 읽은 사람이라면 분명히 뒤에 이어질 내용을 뻔히 예상할 수 있고, 실제 내용도 거기서 크게 벗어나진 않는데도 너무나 재미있고 다음권의 내용을 궁금하게 만드는 놀라운 재주가 거기에 있습니다. 방대하고 난잡한 이야기 속에서 무엇을 죽이고 무엇을 살려서 이어서 뻗어나갈지를 결정하는 솜씨가 너무도 뛰어나니 독자로서는 어디서 호흡이 멈출지 짐작하지도 못 한 채 숨을 죽이고 읽어 내리게 됩니다. 저는 판소리를 들어본 적이 없지만 과거의 이름난 명창들이 이러지 않았을까요. 거기에 더해서 고우영의 그림이야 뭐 말할 것 없이 훌륭하지만 이 고우영 수호지는 더 특별합니다. 신문 연재라는 틀에서 벗어난 작품이기에 작가가 원하는대로 시원시원하게 컷을 잡고 그림을 그렸거든요. 작중 인물이 거대한 바다를 보며 '어이쿠! 꼭 송강이 마음 같구나!' 라고 감탄하는 장면을 통째로 두 페이지에 할당한 것은 신문 연재로서는 도저히 할 수 없는 자유분방한 연출입니다. 아무리 고우영이 천재라 한들 이러한 솜씨가 하늘 아래 갑자기 뚝 떨어진 재주일 수는 없고, 오랜 세월 이 땅에 살았던 우리 조상들을 즐겁게 해주던 유산들이 결집하여 만들어진 결과물일 것입니다. 따라서 우리는 고우영의 만화를 자랑스럽게 '한국 만화' 라 부를 수 있습니다. 마지막으로 하나만 덧붙이자면, 고우영이 한국적인 유산을 가지고 한국 만화를 그렸다는 '정치적인 관점'이 그를 더 특별하게 만들어주는 것은 아닙니다. 그렇지 않은 만화가들에 대해 우월한 지위를 가지고 있는 것도 절대로 아니고요. 한국 만화를 그리건 미국 만화를 그리건 좋은 만화는 좋은 것이고, 우리가 쌓아온 획득형질조차도 배타적이고 고여있는 것이 아니라 끊임없는 문화 교류의 역사를 증거하는 것이기에 '한국 사람은 한국적인 것을 해야 한다' 라는 구호는 허망하고 어리석은 편견의 소치일 뿐이죠. 그러니 만화의 가능성과 지평선을 좁은 곳에 가두지는 맙시다. 고우영은 우리가 창고 속에 방치하고 있던 재산을 찾아내어 우리에게 보여주었고, 과거와 현재를 이어줌으로써 만화의 지평선을 넓혀주었습니다. 너무나 안타깝게도 고우영 수호지는 고당주를 함락시키고 시진을 구해내는 것에서 연재가 중단되었고, 고우영의 사망으로 영영 이어지지 못 할 걸작이 되었습니다. 고우영 선생님이 살아계셨더라면 우리에게 얼마나 더 경이로운 세계를 보여주셨을까요. 선생님의 명복을 빕니다. 삼국지 입문을 고우영 삼국지로 입문했던 기억이 나네요
소설같은 글 읽는걸 워낙 싫어해서 만화로 보고싶어했고 그 결과가 고우영 삼국지였죠 ㅋㅋ
(물론 더 유명한 삼국지만화들이야 많았지만 그떄 제가 구할 수 있던게 그거 하나뿐이었음..)
해당 작품에선 유비가 정말로 쪼다가 됐지만 또한 동시에 얼마나 능구렁이인지 웬만한 사람은 쥐도새도 모르게 잡아먹힐 수밖에 없는 인물로 그렸는데 그 설정(?)이라던가 이런게 얼마나 치밀하게 짜여졌는지 진짜 대단하단 생각이 들었습니다.
