*극도의 꼰대주의 여러분들은 스포츠를 왜 시청하십니까? 기본적으로 각본 없는 드라마, 휴먼 스토리 등을 기대하는 분들도 많을 것이고, 그 자체가 재밌고 멋있어서, 뭔가 응원팀 정하고 소리라도 지르고 싶기도 하고, 시간 떼우기도 딱이고 여러 이유가 있을 것입니다. 안타깝게도 아무도 생각지도 않은 사이 우리나라에서는 스포츠를 시청하는 이유 하나가 십수 년 전부터 급속도로 늘기 시작하였고, 2년 전부터는 미국도 여기에 끼어들기 시작했습니다. 그것은 바로 스포츠 도박입니다. 오늘은 미국 위주로 좀 이야기해보겠습니다. 사실 한국 이야기는 탐라에 자주 했어서... 의외로 2018년까지 미국에서는 스포츠베팅이 네바다 주를 제외하고는 불법이었습니다. 흔히 브래들리 법안이라 불렸던 연방법 PAPSA에 의거 스포츠 베팅이 불가능했고, 네바다 주에서도 굉장히 제한이 엄격했었다고 합니다. 그런데 2018년 5월 이 법이 연방 대법원에서 위헌 판결이 납니다. 이걸 연방법으로 규제하는 것은 자유를 침해하므로, 주들 니들이 알아서 하라 이런 취지가 된 것이죠. 물론 그런다고 스포츠 베팅이 바로 폭발적으로 늘지는 않았습니다. 2018년 말까지 스포츠 베팅이 합법화된 주는 고작 7개 주. 이것도 활성화되지는 못했습니다. 이유는 여전한 스포츠 베팅에 적대적인 분위기, 주별로 정책, 세율, 수수료 등이 다 달라서 전국적인 업체들이 달려들기 쉽지 않았던 탓입니다. 물론 2018년 이전까지 네바다 주의 스포츠 베팅 매출은 1B$에 불과했던 반면 전국적인 불법 스포츠도박의 규모는 수십 배 이상이었던 점을 감안하면 언젠가는 터질 벽이긴 했습니다. 지지부진하던 스포츠 베팅 산업은 COVID-19가 터지고 6월 이후 갑자기 전미의 주목을 받게 됩니다. 물론 3~4월만 해도 모든 스포츠가 셧다운되며 할 일이 없어졌습니다만, 카지노뿐만 아니라 모든 사회가 셧다운되며 놀 거리가 없어졌지요. 그러자 제일 처음에 떴던 것이 게임, e스포츠 산업이었는데, 카지노 샷다운이 장기화되다보니 스포츠 베팅에 많은 관심이 모아지게 됩니다. 스포츠 경기만 재개되면 카지노 갈거 스포츠 베팅 하면 되는 거니까요. 게다가 8월까지는 지원금 남은걸로 주식하고 베팅하는 분위기도 있었습니다. 여기에 이해관계가 얽힌 구단, 협회, 방송국, 지자체가 전부 스포츠 베팅에 주목하게 됩니다. 스포츠 중계 산업이 엄청난 타격을 받고, 구단들은 관중수입이 없어져서 더더욱 중계료와 광고에 의존해야 하고, 미국의 파산 직전인 지자체들은 안그래도 코로나로 세수가 거의 절망적인 수준으로 가게 되었지요. 이 사람들 눈에 스포츠 베팅은 그야말로 황금알 낳는 거위로 보였을 것입니다. 카지노 매출 대충 20%가 주정부로 들어가는데 스포츠 베팅도 대충 그정도만 받으면 코로나 시기에 큰 도움이 될 수 있지요. 미국의 지방재정 상태는 그야말로 개막장의 끝인지라... 코로나 이후 스포츠 베팅이 합법화된 주는 순식간에 19개로 늘었고, 곧 31개 주가 될 것이라고 합니다. https://www.barrons.com/articles/michael-jordan-is-betting-on-draftkings-endorsement-equity-stake-51599068627? https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2020/09/espn-enters-into-co-exclusive-agreements-with-caesars-entertainment-and-draftkings/ 스포츠 베팅 업체도 여러 곳이 있습니다. 주로 대형 카지노 회사들이 앞서나가는데, 그 외에 SPAC상장으로 스포츠 베팅만 전문으로 하는 사이트가 상장된 바 있습니다. 그 회사가 DraftKings(DKNG)인데, 이번 코로나 사태의 최대 수혜주 중 하나로 꼽힙니다. 무려 마이클 조던을 고문으로 앉혔고, ESPN과 2년 독점 계약을 맺었습니다. 이제 ESPN에 베팅 정보를 제공하고 광고를 넣습니다.  드래프트킹즈의 주가는 테슬라 못지않게 뛴 상황. 저는 스포츠 시청 관련으로는 엄청난 꼰대에 가까운지라, 이러한 흐름이 대단히 잘못되었다고 느낍니다. 그렇지만 몇 년 전부터 미국 스포츠 매체들은 과거 전문적인 분석 이런 거로는 돈을 벌지 못한다는 것을 알아버렸습니다. 어차피 분석은 블로거들이 한땀한땀 해내면 더 잘하고, 중계료는 천정부지로 올라가고 있던 상황. ESPN은 2012년에 인원을 대거 해고한 데 이어 2015년인가 6년에도 현장 인원들을 대량 해고한 바 있습니다. 그 자리는 은퇴 선수들 대담, 트위터 반응, 유명인사들 농담 따먹기 등으로 채웠지요. 안타깝지만 그게 더 돈이 되는 것입니다. 그런 가운데 이번 스포츠 베팅의 약진은, 스포츠를 즐기는 이유가 오락성으로 아예 방향을 틀었다고 해석을 하는 것이 맞다고 생각합니다. 르브론만 나오면 ㅇㅅㄹㅅ 하는 게 밈이 되고 경기 결과보다는 릅 까고 찬양하고 보는게 더 재밌는 것처럼... 예전처럼 뭐 AD가 나오면 존디펜스 못쓴다던가 AD를 잡으려면 가드 하나 버리고 헬핑으로 2:1 철저하게 잡아내야 하고 르브론 스위칭은 드롭으로 막는다던가 이런 분석은 아무도 관심 없어한다는 거죠. 이제는 스포츠 언론에서 전문성이 별로 필요가 없어졌습니다. 팬들이 원하지 않아요. 점점 더 가볍게 스포츠를 소비한다는 건데, 모르겠습니다. 그 이전조차 전혀 좋은 변화가 아니라 생각했는데, 베팅까지 오니 그냥 포기를 해야하나 싶기도 하구요. 여튼 시대는 이리 흘러가고 있습니다.
