둠 이터널은 2016년에 나왔던 둠 리부트의 후속작입니다. 개인적으로 리부트를 시작하면서 만든 첫 작품의 제목을 구작하고 헷갈리게 짓는 걸 정말 싫어하는데 다행히도 둠 이터널은 따로 구분할 필요 없이 적당한 제목을 붙여서 나왔네요. 이번 작은 전작에서 이어집니다. 당연히 스토리를 뜻하기도 하고, 둠 리부트가 갖는 정체성을 계속 이어나가고 있단 말이기도 합니다. 하나의 구역에서 적과 자유롭게 싸우고 나면 다시 다음 구역에서 싸워야 하는 단순하지만 반복적이지 않은 형식을 추구하죠. 모던 워페어의 대성공 이후로 가장 흔했던 것이 이런 둠 스타일의 FPS였는데 오히려 요즘 시대에는 둠만이 가지게 된 고유한 스타일이 되어버렸습니다. 전작인 2016년의 둠과 비교해서 완전히 같은 게임인가라고 따진다면 제 생각에는 겉으로는 크게 달라진 것 같지 않지만, 직접 플레이하면 둠과 느낌이 많이 다른 후속작이라 생각됩니다. 가장 큰 변화는 게임의 템포가 다르단 것을 들 수 있어요. 2016년의 둠은 고전적인 아레나 스타일이었고 한 구역을 정리하는 과정이 상당히 단순했습니다. 움직이고 쏘고의 반복이었죠. 그에 비해서 둠 이터널은 좀 더 복잡한 과정을 많이 요구합니다. 일단 전투와 상관 없는 퍼즐 구간의 빈도가 상당히 많아졌고, 전투 과정도 무작정 쏘고 움직이는 것이 아니라 판단하고 정확한 전술을 선택하도록 변했습니다. 물론 전작이 안 그랬던 것은 아니지만, 둠 이터널 쪽이 훨씬 강조되었습니다. 그 덕분인지 둠 이터널은 난이도에서도 둠보다 더 어려워졌습니다. 전 언제나 첫 플레이는 되도록 기준이 되는 중간 난이도를 고르는 편인데 둠 때는 막힘 없이 쭉 진행이 가능한데 비해서 둠 이터널은 시간이 다소 걸릴 때가 꽤 있었습니다. 무엇보다 전작은 상대적으로 공간이 좁은 우주 정거장 같은 시설 내부가 주를 이루었다면 악마의 지구 침공으로 시작되는 둠 이터널은 확연하게 공간이 넓고, 특히 둠과 비교도 되지 않을 정도로 3차원 축이 강조됩니다. 그래서 둠의 상징적인 슈퍼 샷건에는 적을 지지대 삼아서 이동하는 갈고리도 생겼죠. 다만 이러한 변화가 장점만 있다곤 보기 어렵습니다. 다양한 전술을 강요하면서 플레이어에게 다양한 전술을 강요하도록 디자인된 몬스터가 꽤 있어요. 이러한 변화가 둠을 호쾌하게 적을 때려죽이기에 좋아하는 팬에겐 단점이 될 수 있습니다. 이게 한두번도 아니고 계속 반복되다 보면 전 여기에 긍정적인 입장인데도 약간 짜증이 날 때가 있었거든요. 또 지적할만한 단점으로는 한국어 번역의 질이 매우 떨어집니다. 딱 흔히 말하는 번역기 돌렸다는 식의 그 품질이에요. 둠이 대사량이 많지 않고, 오역이 있어도 스토리를 이해하는데 크게 지장이 없어서 망정이지, 이 정도로 오역이 많은 건 메이저 게임 중에서 정말 오랜만에 볼 정도네요. 그리고 그 스토리에서 언급하자면 둠 이터널의 서사는 2016년의 둠 이상으로 좋습니다. 전 설명하고 싶어서 안달난 서사도 매우 싫어하고, 반대로 숨기는 척하면서 조금씩 내뱉는 표현법도 좋아하진 않습니다. 그런 방식에 비하면 둠 이터널은 평범하게 둠에서 둠 이터널로 이어지는 둠 슬레이어의 악마 몰살기를 잘 보여주고 있어요. 단순히 악마의 인류 침공 이상의 설정이 게임 내에서 드러나지 않았던 이전의 둠에 비해선 이게 둠인가 싶을 정도로 꽉 찬 배경 설정을 보고 있으면 독창적이기도 하고 마음에 듭니다. 마지막으로 사운드에선 효과음과 배경 음악 모두 나쁘지 않고, 특히 효과음은 전작에서 별로였던 부분이 보강되었습니다. 전 PC로 플레이했는데 PC판의 최적화도 문제는 없었습니다. 만약 2016년 때 나온 둠을 재미있게 플레이하셨다면 둠 이터널도 괜찮은 후속작이긴 할텐데, 꽤 달라진 게임 스타일이 의외로 호불호가 갈릴 가능성이 좀 있어보입니다. 혹시 둠을 좋아하는데 난 소울 시리즈도 재미있게 하는 편이다 싶으면 둠 이터널 쪽이 더 재미있게 플레이하실 수 있을거라 봅니다.
