 삼체는 외계인(삼체 세계 거주자)의 지구 침략에 대한 지구인들의 상이한 대응과 생존을 다룬 이야기입니다. 예원제는 문화대혁명 시기에 양심적 과학자인 부친을 홍위병의 폭력으로 잃습니다. 자신 또한 변방의 레이더 기지에 갇혀 억압을 당해요. 그러던 중 우연히 외계 생명체와 교신에 성공한 그녀는 발달된 외계 문명이 사악한 인류를 멸망시키고 보다 우월한(선량한) 문명이 구축되기를 바라며 이후 자신과 뜻을 같이 하는 이들을 만나 비밀리에 <삼체 운동>을 개시합니다. 뤄지는 삼체 세력이 지구 정복을 위해 우주함대를 파견했다는 사실이 알려진 후 삼체인들에 대항하기 위해 선별된 여러 인물 중 한명입니다. 삼체인들은 지구인보다 우월한 문명을 가졌지만 <거짓말>을 하지 못하고 상대방의 거짓말도 알아채지 못한다는 약점을 갖고 있어요. 뤄지는 삼체인들의 그러한 빈틈을 파고들어 자신만의 대응책을 고안해내요. 삼체 행성의 좌표가 적힌 메시지를 광대한 우주공간에 발신해서 삼체를 위협할 제3의 외계 생명체를 전쟁에 끌어들이는 거예요. 지구가 삼체의 가공할 무기로 위기에 처했을 때, 뤄지의 방법은 엄청난 위력을 발휘합니다. 메시지 송신장치를 통해 삼체인들과 평화교섭에 성공한거죠. 소설은 뤄지의 그와 같은 방법이 지닌 힘을 <위협권>이라 부르고 뤄지를 <검잡이>이라 불러요. 청신은 뤄지로부터 위협권을 계승하는 2대 검잡이예요. 그녀의 휴머니즘과 인류애에서 비롯된 유약함은 삼체 세계의 재침략을 불러들여 지구를 또 위기에 빠뜨려요. 이후 삼체 세계는 제3의 외계 세력에게 멸망당하고 지구와 태양계는 2차원의 평면으로 변해버려요. 청신은 그녀와 함께 2차원화된 지구에서 살아남은 아이AA와 우주선을 타고 DX3906이라는 별에 도착해서 관이판이라는 인물에게 우주의 차원 하강의 비밀을 들어요. 이후 청신과 관이판은 그들이 안주했던 소우주 647을 벗어나 우주의 소멸을 막기 위해 재차 대우주로 진입해요. 소설 2권의 제목은 <암흑의 숲>인데 이것은 광대한 우주공간을 지칭할거예요. 그 숲에는 저마다 다른 무기를 가진 사냥꾼들이 서로의 존재를 모른 채 배회하고 있죠. 우주 공간에 흩어져 있는 외계 문명들이 서로의 존재를 모른 채 어딘가에는 자신들과 같은 문명체가 존재하리라 짐작하고 살아가는 것처럼. 예원제가 뤄지에게 전하는 우주사회학의 기본 공리는 두 가지예요. 첫째, 우주 내부의 모든 외계문명은 생존을 제일원리로 삼는다. 둘째, 우주 공간 내부의 자원은 한정적이나 생명체들의 번식은 무한히 확장 가능하다. 그 두 공리에 의하면 <암흑의 숲>은 철저한 약육강식의 세계죠. 사냥꾼들은 어느 방향에서든 특정한 상대의 존재를 감지할 경우 그가 누구인지 알기 전에 일단 조건반사적인 공격부터 감행해야 해요. 상대가 우호적이라고 가정하는 것보다 적대적이라고 가정하는 것이 자신의 생존과 안전, 번식에 유리하기 때문이죠. 우주 공간에는 생존에 필요한 자원이 제한적이므로 나와 내 자손이 살기 위해서는 상대가 누가 되었든 일단 제거하는겁니다. 뤄지가 삼체 세계의 좌표를 외계에 알리면 동시에 지구의 위치도 노출될 수밖에 없지만 뤄지의 <나죽고 너죽자>작전은 삼체한테 지구가 위협을 느끼는 순간 <삼체와 지구의 세력균형에 의한 공존>을 선택할 것인가 아니면 제3 외계 세력에 의한 <양 세력의 파멸>을 선택할 것인가를 조건으로 협상을 진행할 수 있는 전략적 무기가 될 수 있었어요. 삼체 세계는 자신들의 파멸을 원치 않으니까 뤄지의 의도에 따를 수밖에 없죠. 물론 이후 삼체 세계는 지구인들이 좌표를 전송하는 행위를 원천적으로 차단하고자 할 것이었고 지구인들은 한편으로 그런 좌표 전송을 견지하면서 다른 한편으로 삼체 세계를 향해 그들의 과학문명을 전수해줄 것을 요구해서 전력 불균형을 해소해야 했구요. 뤄지의 평화협상 이외에 이 분열상태를 진압해줄 강력한 무력집단은 <함대세계>입니다. 세계의 모든 국가가 쇠퇴하여 강대국이 없어지고 대신 국가가 아닌 실체가 생깁니다. 그것이 우주함대. 어느 나라에도 속하지 않고 정치적으로 경제적으로 독립된 존재. 국가와 마찬가지로 UN 회원으로 가입하여 과거의 초강대국만큼의 영향력을 가지는.. 그렇게 인류는 두 세계로 나뉩니다. 기존의 지구와 새로 등장한 <함대세계>로. 이 초월적 무력집단은 지구의 평화와 물질적 풍요로움을 지탱하고 견인합니다. 류츠신은 휴머니즘에 대해 회의를 가지고 있는것처럼 보이기도 합니다. 2권 후반부에 등장하는 <물방울>은 삼체세계에 대한 지구인들의 포용과 감상을 비웃듯 200년간 지구인들이 구축한 연합우주함대를 보란 듯이 궤멸시킴으로써 지구인들이 <암흑의 숲>속에 떨어진 미숙아나 벌레 같은 존재에 지나지 않음을 증명합니다. 아울러 현실적이고 냉정한 이성의 소유자였던 장베이하이는 마지막 순간에 휴머니즘적 감상으로 머뭇거리는 바람에 '자연선택호'에 승선 중이던 천 명에 달하는 동료들과 함께 다른 함대의 수소폭탄에 의해 살상당해요. 누가 먼저 다른 함대를 공격할 것인가 분초를 다투는 상황에서 [영혼의 가장 깊은 곳에 남아있던 한 모금의 유약함이 그를 죽이고 자연선택호에 있는 모든 사람을 죽였]던 거죠.. 3권에서 삼체 세계와 지구 세계 간 세력균형의 상실과 두 세계의 멸망을 가져다 준 <위협권>의 계승 대목에서도 민주주의에 대한 부정적 시선이 보여요. 제1대 <검잡이> 뤄지가 지니고 있던 위협권이 오랫동안 자유롭고 민주적인 시대를 살았던 인류에게 독재권력으로 인식되고 그것이 결국 선거를 통해 후에 부적격자로 판명된 청신에게 넘어가면서 삼체 세계와 태양계는 불과 60여 년만에 종말을 맞습니다. 지구인이 삼체인보다 우월한 단 한 가지 요소가 있는데 바로 <기만 능력>이에요. 그와 함께 지구인에게는 다른 사람에 대한 동정과 연민, 약자에 대한 배려와 보호를 가능케 하는 윤리가 있어요. 삼체 세계에 윤리감이 부족해 보이는건 그들의 열악한 자연환경 때문이겠죠. 세 개의 태양이 불규칙적으로 뜨고 지면서 행성을 엄청난 온도로 가열시키기도 하고 냉각시키기도 합니다. 너무 뜨겁거나 추워서 생존이 어려워지는 <난세기>에는 스스로를 탈수시켜서 미라 비슷하게 보존시켰다가 적당한 기온이 유지되는 항세기가 오면 <입수>를 통해 되살아나 문명을 발전시켜야 해요. 문명이 지속적으로 발달할 수 없는 척박한 자연환경은 자신들로부터 가장 가까운 항성계에서 지구를 발견하자 별다른 고민 없이 정벌군을 파견하도록 결정하죠. 그러한 삼체 세계에 대한 인류의 입장은 두 가지예요. 하나는 삼체 세계에 저항하는 거고 하나는 삼체인들에게 파멸당하고 새로운 문명이 창조되기를 기대하는 거예요. 언뜻 보기에는 전자가 정의롭고 윤리적인거 같고 후자가 불의하고 비윤리적인거 같지만, 후자를 대표하는 삼체운동의 지도자, 예원제와 그녀의 동료 에번스는 원래 정의롭고 윤리적인 사람들이었어요. 예원제는 문화대혁명의 탄압 속에서도 순수하고 따뜻한 인간애를 잃지 않았고 에번스는 거대한 석유기업의 후계자 지위를 마다하고 맨몸으로 환경운동에 젊음을 바쳤어요. 그런 그들이 삼체운동의 핵심인물이 된건 인간에 대한 실망감과 환멸 때문이었는데, 왜 그랬겠어요. 그들이 너무나도 윤리적이기 때문이었죠. 그들이 보아왔던 인간들의 비정하고 잔악한 행위가 그들로 하여금 삼체 세계에 의한 인류의 멸망을 염원하도록 만든 겁니다.. 삼체인들은 척박한 환경 때문에 냉혹한 현실주의에 의거하여 지구를 침략한 거지만, 그들의 도래를 유도한 지구인은 극단적인 이상주의와 윤리적 동기에서 인류의 멸망을 원했어요.. 예원제와 에번스의 착각은 고도의 문명이 곧 고도의 윤리성일 것이라고 생각했던 거에요.. 삼체 문명이 지구보다 우월하기 때문에 그들의 윤리수준도 지구인들보다 나을 것이라고.. 실제로 삼체인들은 다른 사람을 속이고 기만하는 능력이 없었다는 면에서는 순수하고 정직했지만, 그건 남을 속이는 것이 옳지 않아서가 아니라, 즉 비윤리적이어서가 아니라, 문명의 발달과 자신들의 생존에 비효율적이었기 때문일 뿐이었어요. 윤리-비윤리의 문제가 아니라 무無윤리였던 거죠. 허황되고 낭만적인 윤리감각은 치명적이었어요. 삼체 함대가 미리 보낸 <물방울>을 지구 세계에 대한 우호적 메시지라고 오독함으로서 우주함대에 손실을 초래하고 우주가 <암흑의 숲>이라는 진실을 정면으로 응시하지 못했죠. 암흑의 숲에 거주하는 사람들이 취해야 할 태도는 만인의 만인에 대한 투쟁이며 인류의 소멸마저도 적과의 협상에 이용할 카드로 제시할 수 있는 냉정한 현실주의인 것을.. 하지만 냉혹한 우주현실 속에서 평화를 꿈꾸고 자신을 희생하는 일이 전혀 무가치한 일은 아닐겁니다. 무無윤리의 삼체세계에도 소수의 미약한 윤리적 시도는 있었어요. 지구에서 예원제가 최초로 보낸 전파를 접수하고 <대답하지 말라!>고 회신한 삼체 세계의 감청원.. 그는 뤄지의 기지로 지구 세계와 삼체 세계가 일시적 균형을 이룬 직후 뤄지에게 말해요. "어젯밤 강연에서 당신이 말했다. 우주가 암흑의 숲이라는 사실을 인류가 오랫동안 깨닫지 못한 것은 문명이 성숙하지 못해서가 아니라 인류에게 사랑이 있었기 때문이라고.. 당신은 말했다.. 인류가 우주에서 유일하게 사랑을 아는 종족일 가능성이 크다고.. 면벽자의 임무를 수행하는 동안 가장 힘들었던 시기에 이런 생각을 하며 버틸 수 있었다고.. 삼체 세계에서도 사랑이 있다. 그것이 전체 문명의 생존에 불리하기 때문에 싹이 트자마자 억눌려 버릴 뿐.. 하지만 그 싹의 생명력은 워낙 강해서 어떤 개체에게서는 왕성하게 자라나기도 한다.. 당신과 한 가지 가능성에 대해 이야기를 나누고 싶다. 사랑의 싹은 우주의 다른 곳에도 존재할 것이다. 우리는 그 싹이 무성하게 자라도록 도와주어야 한다.. 우리는 모험을 해볼수 있다.." 현실에서 통용될 수 없는 무력하기 짝이 없는 외침. 동시에 눈부시게 찬란하여 아름다운. 하지만 그것을 지키기 위해서는 그것으로부터 벗어나 냉혹하게 현실을 관조할 수 있어야 한다. 이것이 삼체가 이야기하는 윤리의 아이러니.. <암흑의 숲>을 제어하기 위해서는 초우주적인 힘이 필요하다. 윤리나 사랑이 단순한 구호나 공허한 울림에 지나지 않도록 하려면.. 이하는 걍 아무 발췌 왕먀오는 그녀가 예전에 사라진 도스 운영 시스템과 비슷하다는 생각이 들었다. 아무것도 없는 까만 화면에 단순하기 짝이 없는 c:> 프롬프트가 깜박이고 사용자가 입력하는 대로 출력한다. 한 글자도 더 많아지지 않고 변화가 생기지도 않는다. 이제 그는 c:> 프롬프트 뒤에 사실은 무한한 심연이 있다는 것을 알았다. 멋모르고 양둥을 가르쳤지. 그래서 추상적이고 궁극적인 것을 너무 일찍 접하게 했어. 그 애가 처음으로 추상 이론에 흥미가 있다고 했을 때 나는 그 세계는 여자들이 진입하기엔 너무 어렵다고 했지. 퀴리 부인은 들어가지 않았냐고 묻더군. 그래서 내가 말했지. 퀴리 부인은 들어간 적이 없다고. 그녀의 성공은 노력과 끈기 때문이었다고. 그녀가 아니었다면 그 일은 다른 사람이 해냈을 거야. 우젠슝 같은 여성은 그래도 비교적 멀리까지 나아갔지만 그래도 정말 여성의 세계는 아니야. 여성의 사고방식은 남성과 달라. 두 사고방식 중 어느 것이 낫다고 할 수는 없어. 세상에는 둘 다 꼭 필요하지. 양둥은 내 말에 반박하지 않았어. 나중에 나는 정말 그 아이에게서 특별한 점을 발견했지. 예를 들어 내가 어떤 공식을 알려주면 다른 아이들은 '이 공식은 정말 절묘해요'같은 말을 하는데 양둥은 '이 공식은 정말 아름다워요'하고 말했어. 아름다운 꽃을 보는 듯한 표정이었지. 그 애의 아버지가 음반을 많이 남겼는데 이것저것 듣더니 결국 바흐를 골라 반복해서 듣는 거야. 바흐는 아이, 특히 여자아이가 빠져들만한 음악은 아니지. 처음에는 그저 아무렇게나 골랐겠지 싶었는데 느낌을 물어보니 글쎄, 거인이 크고 복잡한 집을 짓는 것 같다지 뭐야. 거인이 조금씩 조금씩 쌓아서 음악이 완성되고 그렇게 큰 집이 완성된다는 거야... 4.28 대원들은 이전에도 여러 차례 이런 게임을 벌였다. 옥상 위로 올라온 사람은 깃발을 흔들고 때로는 메가폰에 대고 구호를 외치거나 건물 아래로 전단지를 뿌리다가 총알 세례가 쏟아지면 몸을 숨겨 자신의 숭고한 영예를 쟁취했다. 이번에 나온 소녀 역시 자기에게도 그런 행운이 있을 것이라 생각했을 것이다. 그녀는 깃발을 흔들며 자신의 청춘을 불살랐다. 적들이 이 불꽃 속에서 잿더미가 되고 이상 세계의 내일이 자신의 피 끓는 열정 속에서 탄생할 것이라고 생각했을 것이다. 그녀가 이런 선홍빛 몽상에 빠져 있을 때 소총의 총알이 그녀의 가슴을 관통했다. 열다섯 살 소녀의 부드러운 가슴을 뚫고 들어간 총알은 속도가 줄지 않은 채 몸을 관통했다. 어린 홍위병은 들고 있던 깃발과 함께 옥상에서 떨어졌다. 그 가벼운 몸은 마치 하늘에 미련이 남은 작은 새처럼 깃발보다 더 늦게 떨어졌다. 그래도 다른 사람들에 비해 그녀는 행운이었다. 적어도 지신의 이상을 위해 목숨을 바쳤고 장렬한 열정 속에 죽어갔기 때문이었다. 반짝이는 하늘 아래 서 있으니 갑자기 우주가 작다는 느낌이 들었다. 너무 작아서 혼자만 그 속에 갇힌 것 같았다. 우주는 작은 심장이나 자궁이고 이 자욱하게 깔린 붉은 빛은 그 안에 가득한 반투명 혈액이며 그는 혈액 속에 둥둥 떠 있는 듯했다. 불규칙적으로 반짝이는 붉은빛은 심장이나 자궁이 불규칙적으로 박동하는 것이었다. 그는 거기에서 인류의 지혜로는 영원히 이해할 수 없는 기이하고 변화하는 거대한 존재를 느꼈다. 사람 소리도 모두 끊긴 깊은 밤, 이어폰으로 우주에서 전해지는 생명이 없는 소리를 듣지. 어렴풋하게 들려오는 소리는 그 별들보다 더 영원한 것 같았어. 때로 그 소리는 다싱안링의 겨울에 끊임없이 몰아치는 바람같이 차가워. 그 고독은 정말 뭐라고 표현할 수가 없어. 때로 야근을 마치고 나와서 밤하늘을 올려다보면 별들이 마치 빛나는 사막처럼 느껴졌어. 나는 그 사막에 버려진 불쌍한 아이 같고.. 나는 이런 생각이 들어. 지구의 생명은 정말 우주의 우연 속의 우연이라고. 우주는 텅 빈 큰 궁전이고 인간은 그 궁전에 있는 유일한 하나의 작은 개미지. 이 생각은 내 후반 생애에 모순된 감정을 심어줬어. 때로 생명은 정말 귀해서 태산보다 무겁게 느껴지지만 또 때로는 인간이 너무나 보잘것없이 미미하게 느껴져. 어쨌든 삶은 이런 이상한 감정 속에 하루하루 지나갔고 나도 모르는 사이에 사람은 늙었지.. 그때 나는 반평생 화류계를 전전하던 탕자가 갑자기 사랑에 빠진 것 같은 기분이 들었습니다. <신은 뻔뻔한 도박사야! 그는 우리를 버렸어!> 아인슈타인이 언제 왔는지 바이올린을 내두르며 말했다. 사무총장이 천천히 고개를 끄덕였다. <그렇습니다. 신은 도박사예요. 삼체 문명의 유일한 희망 역시 도박입니다.> <왜 그래요?> <아무것도 아니에요. 그저 꿈에서깨어난 것뿐이에요> 예원제는 웃으면서 말한 뒤 사무실을 나갔다. 그녀가 숙소로 돌아와 저녁을 먹으러 갔을 때 식당에는 만두와 장아찌밖에 남아 았지 않았다. 식당 직원은 불쾌한 기색으로 지금 문을 닫을 거라고 말했다. 그녀는 만두를 들고나와 절벽 가로 가서 땅에 털썩 주저앉아 식어빠진 만두를 한 입 베어 물었다. 태양은 이미 졌다. 희뿌연 다싱안링이 마치 예원제의 삶 같았다. 이 회색빛 속에 꿈이 찬란하게 빛난 적이 있었다. 그러나 꿈은 언젠가는 깨지는 것이었다. 태양은 또 뜨겠지만 그 태양은 새로운 희망을 가져오지 않을 것이다. 예원제는 자신의 남은 생을 생각했다. 역시 끝없는 회색빛뿐이었다. 눈물이 가득 고였다. 그녀는 웃으며 식은 만두를 계속 먹었다. 예원제는 몰랐다. 바로 그때 지구 문명이 우주로 발사한 첫 번째 목소리가 들을 수 있는 지저귐이 되어 태양을 중심으로 광속으로 우주 전체에 퍼지고 있었다. 항성급 일률의 강력한 전파가 성대한 조수처럼 목성 궤도를 지나고 있었다. 이때 1만 2천 메가헤르츠 주파수대에서 태양은 은하계에서 가장 밝은 별이 되었다. 도시는 숲이다. 남자는 모두 사냥꾼이고 여자는 모두 함정이다. 해군이 항공 우주 분야와 거리가 멀다고 생각하지 말게. 어째서 우주 비행기가 아니고 우주선이라 부르겠나? 어째서 우주 비행대가 아니라 우주 함대라고 부르겠나? 사람들의 의식 속에 우주는 바다와 같은 것이라는 인식이 잠재되어 있기 때문이지. 와, 이것 좀 봐요! / 왜 그래요? / 촛불이 반대편에서 비치니까 와인 색이 아주 예쁘잖아요. / 죽은 태양 같군요. / 그런 상상 하지 말아요. 내가 보기엔 저녁놀의 눈동자 같아요. / 아침놀의 눈동자 같진 않나요. / 난 저녁놀이 더 좋아요. / 왜죠. / 저녁놀이 사라지면 별을 볼 수 있지만 아침놀이 사라진 뒤엔 환한 태양 아래 현실만 남으니까요. 해가 지자 산속 기온이 빠르게 내려갔다. 주위의 모든 것이 어스름에 휘감겼다. 뤄지는 주위의 계단식 논에서 옥수수자루를 주워 와 불을 피웠다. <와, 따뜻해요> 그녀가 기뻐하며 모닥불을 쳐다보았다. 뤄지는 불 앞에 앉아 있는 그녀를 보며 이제껏 한 번도 느껴보지 못한 애틋함이 그의 몸을 휘감고 활활 태우고 있는걸 느꼈다. 자신이 사는 목적이 그녀에게 따뜻함을 주기 위해서인 것 같았다. 그녀는 점점 어두워지는 주위를 둘러보았다. <여기 늑대가 있을까요?> <여긴 북부 내륙이니까 늑대는 없어요. 황량하게 보이지만 전국에서 인구 밀도가 제일 높은 곳이에요. 저기 도로를 봐요. 차가 2분마다 한 대씩 지나가잖아요> <늑대가 있다고 대답하길 바랐어요> <좋아요. 늑대가 있어요. 바로 나예요> 두 사람은 말없이 모닥불만 쳐다보았다. 타닥거리며 피어오르는 불꽃이 밤하늘의 별을 향해 날아갔다. 불이 사그라지지 않도록 옥수수자루를 가끔씩 던져 넣었다. .
