큰 애가 12학년으로 한국으로 따지면 고3을 막 시작했습니다. 미국은 학기가 가을부터 시작이고, 뉴욕은 학기 시작이 조금 늦어서 이제 수업일수가 5일을 막 채웠는데, 원서를 넣어야 할 날들이 얼마 남지 않아서 이래저래 신경을 쓰고 있습니다. 어제는 mock admission이라는걸 학교에서 한다고 해서 학교에 다녀왔는데, 거의 모든 12학년 학생과 학부모가 왔더군요. mock admission이라고 하는건 가상의 대학에서 입학을 담당하는 기관을 가정을 하고, 몇 몇 학생이 지원을 했다고 가정을 한 다음에, 그 학생의 원서를 읽고나서 누구를 입학 시킬것인가에 대해서 이야기를 하는 자리입니다. 어째든 mock admission을 거치고나니 정말로 애가 지원할때가 되었구나라는 생각이 드네요. 미국 입시는 학교도 많고 각 학교마다 다른 특성에 요구사항이 다 틀려서 일괄적으로 이야기를 하기가 참 힘든데, 생각날때마다 이런 저런 주제로 한 두가지씩 애 지원하는 과정에서 배운걸 좀 적어볼까 합니다. 관심있는 분이 별로 없을꺼라고 생각하지만... 그래도 혹시나 모르죠. ------------- Rolling, Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision 요즘 12학년 애들을 보면 제일 많이 하게 되는 말이 아마 early에 어디를 넣을꺼냐는 이야기가 아닐까 싶어요. 미국 입시에서 지원하는 방법으로는 크게 세가지가 - 상시(rolling admission), 수시 혹은 조기(early admission), 그리고 정시(regular admission)- 있습니다. 이 중에 제일 복잡한건 수시지원인데, 한국에서 수시지원이 들어간게 미국의 지원방식을 본따서 한게 아닌가 싶더군요. 1. 상시 지원 보통 rolling admission이라고 부르는데, 이것은 딱히 지원 마감 날짜가 정해져 있지 않은 지원방법입니다. 학생은 지원하고 싶을때 필요한 서류를 갖춰서 지원을 하고, 학교측에서는 지원한 학생의 서류를 보고는 결과를 바로 통보를 해 줍니다. 얼마나 빨리 통보해주냐는 학교마다 조금 다르겠지만, 예를들어 아이오와 스테이트 같은 곳의 경우에는 48시간규정이라고 해서는, 지원을 하고나면 48시간 내로 합격인지 불합격인지 알려준다고 합니다. 이 지원 방법은 설명을 보면 바로 알 수 있듯이, 지원하는 학생이 학교에서 정한 각종 커트라을 넘어서면 그 학생을 다른 학생과 비교하지 않고, 입학 허가를 주게 됩니다. 이 지원은 학생들간의 경쟁이 많지 않은 경우에 주로 사용되지만, 일부 공립학교의 경우에는 꽤 상위권에 속한 학교들인 미시간 스테이트, 펜 스테이트, 빙햄턴과 같은 곳에서도 상시 지원을 하고 있습니다. 2. 정시 지원 정시 지원은 말 그대로 가장 흔하게 사용되는걸로 지원 시기가 12학년 첫 학기가 끝날 무렵인 1월 1일이나 1월 15일경에 마감인 경우가 많습니다. 한국처럼 군으로 나누는것 없이 각 학교별로 무차별로 지원을 받습니다. 그러다보니 지원하는 학생들도 지원하고 싶은 만큼 마음대로 지원을 하고요. 요즘에는 10개 조금 안쪽으로 지원을 하는게 많은데, 직장에 얼마전에 대학 졸업하고 온 애가 있어서, 몇 곳에 지원했었냐고 물어보니 25개 학교에 지원을 했다고 하더군요. 3. 수시 지원 수시지원은 크게 얼리 액션(EA, early action)과 얼리 디시젼(ED, early decision)으로 나누어집니다. 주로 11월 1일이나 11월 15일이 마감이고 결과는 12월 중순경에 알려줍니다. 12학년 1학기가 시작하고 2-3달만에 지원을 하는 경우기때문에, 성적을 비롯한 대부분의 것들이 11학년때까지의 자료만으로 지원을 하게 됩니다. EA와 ED의 가장 큰 차이점으로는 ED는 구속력이 있어서 합격을 하면 다른 학교에는 입학을 하면 안됩니다. 수시 지원의 경우에 결과는 합격, 불합격, 연기(defer) 세 가지중에서 한 가지가 되는데, 연기가 되면 정시로 지원한것과 같이 되어서 정시지원자들과 함께 다시 심사를 받게 됩니다. 3.1 Early Decision ED는 조기 지원을 하는데, 만약에 합격을 하게되면 그 학교에 입학을 하겠다고 서약을 하고 지원을 하는 것을 가리킵니다. 그러다보니 ED에 지원을 하면서 조기 지원을 할 때 ED인 학교만 아니면 얼마든지 지원이 가능합니다. 학교 입장에서는 입학허가를 내주면 자기학교에 무조건 오겠다고 약속을 한 경우기때문에 그런 약속을 다른 학교에만 하는게 아니라면 어떤 식으로 지원을 하던 신경을 쓸 필요는 없는거죠. 아무튼 ED의 경우에 합격률이 정시보다 조금 높다보니, dreasm school의 경우에 ED로 지원을 하는 경우가 많습니다. ED의 경우에 대신 문제가 되는건 재정보조가 문제가 되는 경우가 많습니다. 미국은 워낙에 학비가 비싸서 많은 학생들이 재정보조를 기대를 하고 지원을 하는데, ED의 경우 재정보조를 조금 애매하게 줄 경우에 다른 학교에서 재정보조가 더 좋게 입학허가를 받아도 다른 학교에 갈 수가 없습니다. 물론 재정보조가 감당하기에 너무 문제가 많을 정도로 적다면 서약한거 무효화할수 있기는 한데 역시 피곤한 문제죠. ED의 경우에 ED1과 ED2 두가지가 있는데, ED1은 지원하는 시기와 결과를 알려주는 시기가 전부 정시보다 빠른것이고 ED2는 지원은 정시와 같이하지만 결과는 빨리 알려줍니다. 3.2 Early Action Early Action은 구속력이 없는 조기 지원입니다. 일찍 지원하고 싶은 학교에 지원을 하고 결과를 일찍 알려줍니다. 입학 허가를 받아도 빨리 결정을 하거나 꼭 가야 하는것 없이 정시에 결정난거 다 보고나서 그 다음에 학교 정하면 되는 것입니다. EA의 경우에는 다른 EA나 ED에 마음대로 지원해도 상관이 없는걸로, 결과를 일찍 알 수 있다는 것 이외에는 다른것은 없다고들 합니다. 보통 EA의 경우에는 ED와는 달리 조기 지원이 딱히 합격률에 영향이 별로 없다고 알려져 있습니다. EA중에는 Single Choice Early Action이라는게 있습니다. 이건 EA에 조금 더 제약을 가한것으로 EA의 경우에 다른 학교에 지원하는게 완전히 자유인데 비해서, SCEA학교들은 자기학교에 EA로 지원을 할 경우에 다른 학교 특히 다른 사립대학에는 조기로 지원을 하지 않을것을 요구합니다. 공립대학에 조기 지원하는건 별로 상관은 없고요. ----- 쓰다보니 별 관심도 없을 분야인데 싶기는 하네요. 주변 친구들을 보면 지역 내에 있고 싶은 친구들은 3~5곳정도 해보고 학비라든지 여건이 안맞으면 그냥 지역 College가서 취업테크를 타더라구요. 10곳넘게 지원하는 경우는 꼭 지역에 묶이지 않아도 되는 유학생들이 많았고, 정말 명문대나 특정 대학에 비전을 두는 친구들만 그렇게 많은 곳을 지원하더라구요.
