우선 어려운 마음 나누어주셔서 감사합니다. 글로 다 풀어놓지 않으신 마음의 결들이 있겠지요. 내용을 읽고 생각나는 바를 조금 풀어보려고 하는데, 혹시나 제 이해에 상처를 받거나 하신다면 알려주세요.
1. 불안

결혼에 관한 마음에는 안정을 향한 희구가 섞여있다 생각합니다. 그건 현재 불안의 크기에 영향을 받고요. 그러나 불안은 실체가 없는 경우가 많아요. 또한 발을 내딛기 전에 모든 것을 눈으로 미리 살피고자 하는 이에게 따라오는 벌이기도 합니다. 먼 미래를 계획하는 이들에게 종종 섞여들어오지요.
석사를 졸업하고, 박사 유학을 계획하는 현재 시기는 당연히 불안으로 가득찬 시기여요. 말씀해주신 내용을 보니 미팅에, 논문에, 유학까지 고민하려면 스트레스가 이만 저만 아니셨겠어요. 전부(全部)가 아니면 전무(全無)를 택하는 것이 낫지 않은가 하는 마음이 드셨던 것도 이해가 갑니다.
그런데 고금을 통틀어서, 현대 사회에서는 더더욱, 가시고자 하는 길은 무엇보다도 스스로의 불안을 직면하고, 달래주고, 화해하는 마음이 중요하다 느껴요. 저는 한국에서 석사까지 마친 후 이제 미국에서 박사 1학기를 끝냈어요. 주변 한국인 박사들과 이야기를 나누어보면, 미결정이 자아내는 불안이 각자의 삶에 문신처럼 새겨져 있다는 것이 뚜렷하게 보여요. 또한 저도 한 학기 고군분투하다보니, 더 신경써서 스스로를 돌보지 않으면 불안에 잡아먹히겠다는 결론을 내렸고요.
살면서 글쓴이 분보다 조금은 더 이런저런 경험을 하고, 고민했던 입장에서 조심스럽게 말씀드리자면 '전부(全部)가 아니면 전무(全無)'라는 접근방식은 바람직하지 않아요. 그러한 회피는 언젠가 망치가 되어 스스로의 머리를 때리게 됩니다. 회피가 습관화 될수록 결정적인 순간에 비겁해지기가 쉽거든요.
관계든 과업이든 그 안에서 그러모을 수 있는 조각들을 하나씩 마음에 담는, 달리 말하자면 [지금여기]에 주목하는 사고방식이 끝간데 없이 뻗어나갈 불안에서 스스로를 지킬 방책이 될 겁니다.
2. 관계
물론 관계는 조금 다른 차원의 고려가 필요합니다. 끝까지 안 될 관계는 안 되요. 우리는 타인을 바꿀 수 없지만, 관계는 혼자서 할 수 없는 것이니까요. 서로를 위한 결별이란 존재하지요. 이런 일반론은 차치하고,
언급해주셨던 결혼의 문제만 보면, 저는 오히려 상대방 남자 분께서 진지하게 결혼을 고민하셨다는 생각이 드네요. [말이라도 해주지 못하는 것]은 오히려 진지하게 생각하기에 나오는 대응 방식이기도 하거든요. 위에서 말씀하셨던 이런 커뮤니케이션 프로세스가 범박한 연애사에서 일어나는 오해의 한 흐름이기는 합니다. 말이라도 해주기를 바라는 상대와, 그 말의 무게를 너무나도 무겁게 고민한 나머지 마음을 전하지 못하는 다른 상대요.
선생님께서 결혼 이야기를 꺼내신 순간 상대는 두 가지 선택지에 놓인 거예요. [말이라도 좋게] 해서 당장의 불안을 무마하고 넘어가기, 현실적으로 가능한 선택지를 제시하기. '아니야. 당연히 너와 결혼까지 생각하고 있지'는 당장 기분이 좋으셨겠지만 곰씹으면서 다시 불안이 찾아오셨을 거예요. 자취를 하겠다, 자주 놀러올 수 있게 해주겠다 등은 '지금 현재 할 수 있는 것'을 제시하겠다는 접근이였고, 그 결과는 위에 적으시다시피였지요. 외통수지요. 스스로도 알고 계시고 위에 적으시지 않으셨습니까. 그게 상대의 잘못이 아니라는 것을요. 그렇다고 선생님을 일방적으로 매도하는 것도 적절치 않다고 느끼는데...
불안을 관계로 투사하여 해결책을 찾으려는 것이 그저 안타까울 뿐입니다. 결혼은 해결책이 아니에요.
그리고 지금 상황은 그렇게 절망적인 상황이 아니에요. 스스로 절망이라고 인식하고 있으실 뿐이지요. 투닥거리면서 장거리 연애를 하는 사람들이 많고, 말씀하신 걸 보아하니 유학까지는 아직 시간이 더 남아있네요. 남자친구께서 박사를 마무리 짓고 나면 포닥으로 공부하시는 국가로 넘어올 수도 있는데, 그러면 더 상황이 좋거든요. 그게 아니라면 최대한 가까운 국가로 이동하셔서 시차를 줄이거나, 만남에 걸리는 노력을 줄이는 것도 가능하고요. 박사 과정을 겪어본 남자친구이니 무엇보다도 박사 과정에 드는 선생님의 어려움을 이해할 수도 있고요.
덧붙이지 않은 사정들이 더 있을 수도 있겠지요. 지난 5년 간의 연애를 통해 해소하지 못한 결정적인 성격 차이가 있다거나, 아니면 선생님의 개인적인 신념이 결혼과 안정을 등치시키는 도식에 강하게 결부되어 있다거나요.
무엇보다도 5년의 긴 연애를 마무리 짓는 과정이 서로에게 잔인한 방식이라 제가 다 걱정이 됩니다. 단호와 잔인은 다른 거예요.
1. 불안
예전에 현명한 누나께서 이런 이야기를 해주시더라고요. "사실 미래에 대한 절대적인 확신이 담보되지 않아 두려운 거잖아요. 하지만 미래는 절대 확신을 줄 수가 없죠. 그게 바로 지금 현실이 되기 전까지는요".
결혼에 관한 마음에는 안정을 향한 희구가 섞여있다 생각합니다. 그건 현재 불안의 크기에 영향을 받고요. 그러나 불안은 실체가 없는 경우가 많아요. 또한 발을 내딛기 전에 모든 것을 눈으로 미리 살피고자 하는 이에게 따라오는 벌이기도 합니다. 먼 미래를 계획하는 이들에게 종종 섞여들어오지요.
석사를 졸업하고, 박사 유학을 계획하는 현재 시기는 당연히 불안으로 가득찬 시기여요. 말씀해주신 내용을 보니 미팅에, 논문에, 유학까지 고민하려면 스트레스가 이만 저만 아니셨겠어요. 전부(全部)가 아니면 전무(全無)를 택하는 것이 낫지 않은가 하는 마음이 드셨던 것도 이해가 갑니다.
그런데 고금을 통틀어서, 현대 사회에서는 더더욱, 가시고자 하는 길은 무엇보다도 스스로의 불안을 직면하고, 달래주고, 화해하는 마음이 중요하다 느껴요. 저는 한국에서 석사까지 마친 후 이제 미국에서 박사 1학기를 끝냈어요. 주변 한국인 박사들과 이야기를 나누어보면, 미결정이 자아내는 불안이 각자의 삶에 문신처럼 새겨져 있다는 것이 뚜렷하게 보여요. 또한 저도 한 학기 고군분투하다보니, 더 신경써서 스스로를 돌보지 않으면 불안에 잡아먹히겠다는 결론을 내렸고요.
살면서 글쓴이 분보다 조금은 더 이런저런 경험을 하고, 고민했던 입장에서 조심스럽게 말씀드리자면 '전부(全部)가 아니면 전무(全無)'라는 접근방식은 바람직하지 않아요. 그러한 회피는 언젠가 망치가 되어 스스로의 머리를 때리게 됩니다. 회피가 습관화 될수록 결정적인 순간에 비겁해지기가 쉽거든요.
관계든 과업이든 그 안에서 그러모을 수 있는 조각들을 하나씩 마음에 담는, 달리 말하자면 [지금여기]에 주목하는 사고방식이 끝간데 없이 뻗어나갈 불안에서 스스로를 지킬 방책이 될 겁니다.
2. 관계
물론 관계는 조금 다른 차원의 고려가 필요합니다. 끝까지 안 될 관계는 안 되요. 우리는 타인을 바꿀 수 없지만, 관계는 혼자서 할 수 없는 것이니까요. 서로를 위한 결별이란 존재하지요. 이런 일반론은 차치하고,
언급해주셨던 결혼의 문제만 보면, 저는 오히려 상대방 남자 분께서 진지하게 결혼을 고민하셨다는 생각이 드네요. [말이라도 해주지 못하는 것]은 오히려 진지하게 생각하기에 나오는 대응 방식이기도 하거든요. 위에서 말씀하셨던 이런 커뮤니케이션 프로세스가 범박한 연애사에서 일어나는 오해의 한 흐름이기는 합니다. 말이라도 해주기를 바라는 상대와, 그 말의 무게를 너무나도 무겁게 고민한 나머지 마음을 전하지 못하는 다른 상대요.
선생님께서 결혼 이야기를 꺼내신 순간 상대는 두 가지 선택지에 놓인 거예요. [말이라도 좋게] 해서 당장의 불안을 무마하고 넘어가기, 현실적으로 가능한 선택지를 제시하기. '아니야. 당연히 너와 결혼까지 생각하고 있지'는 당장 기분이 좋으셨겠지만 곰씹으면서 다시 불안이 찾아오셨을 거예요. 자취를 하겠다, 자주 놀러올 수 있게 해주겠다 등은 '지금 현재 할 수 있는 것'을 제시하겠다는 접근이였고, 그 결과는 위에 적으시다시피였지요. 외통수지요. 스스로도 알고 계시고 위에 적으시지 않으셨습니까. 그게 상대의 잘못이 아니라는 것을요. 그렇다고 선생님을 일방적으로 매도하는 것도 적절치 않다고 느끼는데...
불안을 관계로 투사하여 해결책을 찾으려는 것이 그저 안타까울 뿐입니다. 결혼은 해결책이 아니에요.
그리고 지금 상황은 그렇게 절망적인 상황이 아니에요. 스스로 절망이라고 인식하고 있으실 뿐이지요. 투닥거리면서 장거리 연애를 하는 사람들이 많고, 말씀하신 걸 보아하니 유학까지는 아직 시간이 더 남아있네요. 남자친구께서 박사를 마무리 짓고 나면 포닥으로 공부하시는 국가로 넘어올 수도 있는데, 그러면 더 상황이 좋거든요. 그게 아니라면 최대한 가까운 국가로 이동하셔서 시차를 줄이거나, 만남에 걸리는 노력을 줄이는 것도 가능하고요. 박사 과정을 겪어본 남자친구이니 무엇보다도 박사 과정에 드는 선생님의 어려움을 이해할 수도 있고요.
