 과거 썼던 짧은 서평 중 하나를 우연히 발견해서 올립니다. 책 모임하면서 SF 거론하다가 말한 것 같기도, 아닌 것 같기도 한데 별로인 책이라서 선택에 참고하셨으면 좋겠습니다. 구입 말고 도서관에서 대출하시는 게 가장 좋겠습니다. 참. 줄거리 스포가 살짝 있습니다. 그 부분에 신경을 쓰시는 분은 피해가시면 될 것 같습니다. --------------- 한마디로 별로입니다. 작가도 유명하면서 제가 좋아하는 분이기도 해서 개인적으로는 살짝 충격입니다. 혹평을 하기 전에 신중해지려고 참고 4권 중 3권까지 읽었지만 결국 못 참고 혹평에 4권은 아예 읽기를 포기했습니다. ……블랙아웃은 시간여행이 안정화된 지 오래된 미래를 배경으로 하는 SF+역사 소설이에요. 시간여행은 오로지 과거로만 가며, 정부의 엄격한 관리 아래 역사 연구를 위해 사용됩니다. 본작은 <화재감시원>, <둠즈데이북>, <개는 말할 것도 없고>, <올클리어>로 이어지는 연작 중 하나입니다. 같은 배경과 설정에 같은 인물군을 이용해 과거 엄청난 재난이 있던 현장에 가서 당시 사람들을 기록하고 연구하는 내용으로 이어집니다. 본작 블랙아웃은 덩케르크 철수작전이 벌어지기 직전의 영국을 옥스퍼드대 사학과 연구진이 현장 연구를 하는 얘기입니다. 덩케르크에 V1 / V2 로켓의 런던 폭격, 그 후 이어지는 노르망디 상륙작전처럼 현대를 현재의 역사로 만들었던 역사속 대 사건이 줄줄이 이어집니다. 굵직굵직한 이벤트, 일화와 유명인물, 전투, 위험이 나오지만 문제는 하나같이 지루하고 재미없다는 점입니다. 모든 사건은 벌어지기 전에 예고됩니다. 시간 여행자이자 역사학자이기 때문에 모든 사건은 회피하기 위해 화자들이 숙고하고 기억하면서 결국 제대로 피해가는 장면으로 이뤄집니다. 그래서 위험이 나타나도 독자는 초반만 긴장하지 중반만 넘어가면 지루해져요. 어차피 크게 다치지도, 죽지도 않을 텐데 걱정할 필요는 없죠. 폭탄? 강도? 날아오는 적의 폭격기? 연구원의 정체를 알아챈 것 같은 과거의 인물? 어떤 패턴의 사건이건 간에 주인공들의 실존을 침해하는 사건은 단 하나도 없습니다. 사전예고제를 통해 모퉁이에서 무언가 나오는데 이걸 피하는 방법은 이래저래 다 알고 있다는 얘기를 길게 늘어놓습니다. 사건은 치명적이고 놀라워야 한다는 기본적인 콘텐츠 계 조언을 정면으로 무시합니다. 소설계의 오래된 거장이고 이미 상을 세 개나 탄 시리즈라서 넘어간 거지, 신인 작가면 이대로는 내지 못할 책이라고 저는 생각합니다. 쓸데없는 정보도 너무 많이 주어집니다. 등장인물들은 단 한 명도 빠짐없이 끊임없이 대화하면서 당시의 사건이나 분위기를 떠듭니다. 수다쟁이에요. 게다가 별다른 개성도 없습니다. 화자들이 전부 교육을 잘 받고, 예의바르고, 착한 연구자들이라서 개성이나 색다른 관점을 가질 여지가 없습니다. 그냥 가면만 바꿔 쓴 채 한 명의 목소리만 들립니다. 심지어 혼자 있으면 ‘’안에서 생각으로 떠듭니다. 자료 조사를 충실히 했으니 버리지는 못하겠고 다 써먹겠다는 굳은 의지가 보입니다. 만약 시리즈에 관심 있어서 보실 분은 화재감시원만 보세요. 배경과 설정을 공유하는데다 단편이라 30장 내외로 짧고 정말로 감동적입니다. 이분은 그 후 계속해서 여기에 물을 타서 양을 늘린 다음 같은 맛 스프에 각자 다른 라벨을 붙여서 작품 활동하시는 느낌입니다. 그 결과물이 블랙아웃 1, 2와 올클리어 1 같습니다. <블랙아웃>은 본적없고 본문에 소개된 시리즈 중 <둠즈데이북>을 빌려본 적이 있습니다.
시간여행 + 질병의 소재가 좋아보여 정말 기대하고 책을 열었죠.
문제는 소재만 좋았습니다.
읽으면서 '좋은 소재를 가지고 이렇게 재미없게 쓸 수도 있구나'라고 느꼈네요.
그후로 무슨무슨상 받은 책이 재밌을 거라는 생각은 버렸습니다.

<블랙아웃>은 본적없고 본문에 소개된 시리즈 중 <둠즈데이북>을 빌려본 적이 있습니다.
시간여행 + 질병의 소재가 좋아보여 정말 기대하고 책을 열었죠.
문제는 소재만 좋았습니다.
읽으면서 '좋은 소재를 가지고 이렇게 재미없게 쓸 수도 있구나'라고 느꼈네요.
그후로 무슨무슨상 받은 책이 재밌을 거라는 생각은 버렸습니다.
