예전에 다른 곳에 두번 썼던 글입니다. 아래 Schweigen님 고모님 글 읽으니 생각나서 다시 조금 손봐서 올립니다. 제 할아버지께서는 1908년생이셨습니다. 당신의 할아버지와 아버지 모두 동네머슴이셨죠. 그런데 증조할아버지께서 -죄송한 말씀이지만-악착같이 돈을 버셨답니다. 장날에 생대추를 사다가 말려서 다음 장날에 팔고, 농한기에는 안면도로 가서 빗자루/소쿠리 따위를 만드는 일도 배워오셨고... 아무튼, 할머니의 친정아버지께서, '저 집에서는 늘 뭔가를 말리고/만든다. 내 딸을 저 집에 시집보내면 밥은 안 굶겠구나'하는 생각을 하셨을 정도였답니다. 결국 동네에서 밥술 좀 뜨는 집안이 되셨고, 할아버지께서는 대학을 가실 수 있으셨습니다. 동네 머슴이 아들을 대학에 보낸 것입니다. 요즘이야 아무나 대학 갑니다만, 일제시대는 그렇지 않았답니다. 할아버지의 사촌동생(제게는 재종조부)께서는 '요즘 외국유학보다 더 알아줬다'라고 하시더군요. 처음엔 그냥 하시는 말씀이려니 했는데, 말씀하시던 90년대 유학생 수와 그 때 대학생 수를 생각해보니 틀린 말씀은 아닌 것 같습니다. 그렇게 대학에 가신 할아버지께서는 학생운동에 뛰어드셨습니다. 그리고 졸업을 얼마 안남긴 1930년에 퇴학 당하셨습니다. 아버지께서 알아보셨더니, 광주학생운동 때도 중간간부쯤 되셨던 모양입니다. 자세한 것은 모르지만. 돌아가신 할머니께서 아버지께 이런 말씀을 하신 적이 있답니다. 하루는 베를 짜고 있는데, 갑자기 할아버지께서 뛰어오시더니, 종이뭉치를 휙 집어던지고는 달려가시더랍니다. 그래서 그 걸 몸에 숨기시고 그냥 베를 짜셨습니다. 그러자 바로 순사들이 나타나 할아버지를 뒤쫓아 가더라는군요. 순사들이 간 뒤 증조할아버지께 그 말씀을 드리자, 증조할아버지께서 그 문건들을 아궁이에 넣고 태워버리셨답니다. 어릴 때 할머니께서 고모들에게 조용히 말씀하시는 것을 들었습니다. 할아버지께서 댓돌 아래에서 족보를 태워버리셨다고(저희 집안이 몰락양반쯤 되었나봅니다)- 순사들이 족보를 보고 친척들을 잡아족칠까봐. 커서 다시 여쭤보니, 역정을 내시며 그런 일 없다고 딱 잡아떼시더군요. 뭔가 이상했습니다. 제가 잘못 기억하는 것이라면, 그냥 아니라고 하실텐데? 할머니 돌아가신 뒤, 어쩌다 그 이야기가 나왔습니다. 그런데 누나도 그걸 들었다는군요. 할머니께서는 그 일을 감추고 싶으셨던 겝니다. 아마 할머니의 생각에 족보를 태워버렸다는 것은 말도 못할 나쁜 짓이었나봅니다. 아무튼 그렇게 졸업이 눈앞인 학교를 퇴학당하니, 증조할아버지께서는 크게 역정을 내셨답니다. 그럴만도 하죠. 죽어라 고생해서 남들은 꿈도 못 꾸는 대학까지 보내놨는데 그리 되어버렸으니.... 그래서 결국 고향을 떠나게 되십니다. 순사들 등쌀과 증조할아버지의 역정에 견디기 어려우셨던 데다가, 집안 사정도 있었습니다. 할머니의 친정도 몰락양반이었나 봅니다. 당신의 친정 아버지께서는 글도 읽으셨다는데, 그만 보증을 잘못 서서 집안이 무너져버린 모양입니다. 때문에 할머니께서는 팔리다시피 시집을 오셨다는군요. 그리고 그 댓가를 톡톡히 치르셨나 봅니다. 이 일은 아버지도 할머니께서 돌아가시고 10년 넘게 지나서야 알게 되었습니다. 당신께서 아무에게도 말 못하고 큰 딸에게만 말씀하셨던 일을, 그 큰 딸도 극노인이 되어서야 집안의 유일한 남동생에게 털어놓으셨더군요. 게다가 할아버지께서는 독립운동하신다고 소식도 없이 몇달씩 집에 안들어오시는 날이 많아서, 할머니께서는 더욱 견디기 어려웠나봅니다. 오죽하면 할머니께서 할아버지께 갈라서자는 말씀까지 하셨던 모양입니다. 결국 할아버지께서는 고향을 떠나기로 하셨습니다. 할아버지께서 먼저 어디론가 가서 자리를 잡아 놓더니, 돌아와서 할머니와 고모들을 이끌고 흥남으로 가셨답니다. 왜 흥남으로 가셨을까? 일제가 북한지역에 중화학 공업을 육성해 흥남에는 공장이 많았던 것이 이유가 아니었을까 싶습니다. 할아버지께서는 공대생이셨거든요. 그런데 책을 보다보니 흥미로운 이야기가 나오더군요. 함경도에는 공산주의자들의 세력이 강했답니다. 할아버지께서는 좌익이셨는데, 아마 이것도 관계가 있지 않았나 싶습니다. 할아버지께서는 그곳에서 '세깡가가리'라는 일을 하셨답니다. 일본말인지, 공업계통의 독어/영어가 일본어로 변형된 것인지, 그런 말이 다시 북한사투리로 변형된 것인지....무슨 뜻인지 알 수 없습니다. 그래서 무슨 작업복 입고 하는 일이냐고 여쭤보니, 양복을 입고 다니셨다네요. 손주가 물어보는 것이니 좋게만 말씀하시나보다 싶었는데, 30년대생인 큰고모께서 그곳에서 유치원까지 다니셨다니(70년대 생도 유치원 못 다닌 사람 많죠), 그건 아닌가 봅니다. 비록 중퇴라지만, 공대를 다니시던 분이라 기술이 있으셔서 꽤 좋은 일자리를 얻으셨나봅니다. 그러다가 해방을 맞았고, 다음 해 고향으로 돌아오셨습니다. 어릴 때 왜 내려왔냐고 여쭤보니, 할머니께서는 흥남사람들이 남쪽사람이라고 구박을 했다고 하셨습니다. 우리를 '압바치'라고 불렀다네요. 사전을 찾아봐도 무슨 뜻인지 알 수가 없습니다. 집에 돌을 던져서 장독대를 깨버리기도 했답니다. 아버지 기억으로는 38선에서 소련군에게 걸려 할아버지께서 얻어맞으셨답니다. 할아버지께서 소련군을 이끌고 어디론가 잠시 갔다 오더니(뇌물을 주고서야) 넘어오실 수 있으셨다죠. 철교 - 물론 인도교가 아닌 기차철로 - 를 건너올 때는 할머니께서 주저앉으셨다고 합니다. 철도 침목 아래 시퍼런 물을 보니 오금이 저려서. 할아버지의 불호령으로 간신히 건너셨답니다. 고향으로 돌아와서는, 무척 어렵게 사셨다합니다. 베바심(가을걷이) 때나 되어야 배불리 드셨다네요. 공장이든 뭐든 있어야 기술자가 직장을 얻을 게 아닙니까. 어릴 때는 그랬나보다하고 넘어갔는데, 이것저것 생각하게 되네요. 할아버지는 고향이 어떤 곳인줄 몰라서 내려오셨을까? 처자식까지 딸린 사람이, 남에 있던 좌익도 월북하는 판에 왜 돌아 오셨을까? 해방 이후 북한에 일어났던 일들을 살펴 봅니다. 소련군이 산업설비들을 뜯어 갔다는데, 할아버지 다니시던 공장도 뜯어가서 일자리가 사라졌나? 그래도 대부분의 설비를 북한이 넘겨받았고 북한 공업이 빠르게 회복되었다니, 그것 때문은 아닌 것 같습니다. 북한에서도 고급기술자를 무시할 수는 없었을 겝니다. 친일파 청산할 때도 과학/기술자들은 건드리지 않았다니까요. 하물며 좌익 기술자를? 소련군이 진주하고 강간과 약탈이 넘쳐났다는데, 그것 때문인가? 그럴 지도 모르겠네요. 아버지께서는 소련군에 대한 나쁜 기억이 없으십니다. 한겨울에 우린 추워서 벌벌 떨고 있는데 소련군은 찬물로 목욕하던 일(러시아인들은 한 겨울에 찬 물에 뛰어드는 풍습이 있죠. 그걸 북한에 와서도 한 듯 합니다), 소련군이 말타고 가다가 귀여운 아이가 있으면 말안장에서 먹을 것을 좀 꺼내주던 일 정도를 기억하고 계십니다. 아버지께서는 어린 아이셨으니까 눈앞에 보이는 일만 아셨으니 그랬겠지만, 할아버지께서는 좀 다르셨겠죠. 아버지께는 악몽이던 80년대를 저는 좋게만 기억하는 것처럼. 어디에선 소련군들이 무슨 짓을 했다더라, 악에 받친 청년들이 뭉쳐서 돌을 들고(남도 석전도 유명했지만, 북녘에 비할 바가 못된다죠) 소련군을 밤에 습격했다더라는 이야기에 불안하셨겠죠. 숙청이 계속되었다는데, 그것도 영향이 없지 않았을 겁니다. 일제가 물러나 이제 좀 사나 싶더니 여기서 습격하고 저기서 잡아가서, 46년에 이미 북한의 감옥은 꽉 찼고, 많은 이들이 시베리아로 끌려갔다죠. 46년 7~8월이 되자, 조만식은 감금되고 박헌영/무정/김두봉/한설야 같은 쟁쟁한 인물들까지 입을 모아 김일성 장군을 찬양하기 시작합니다. 9월에는 투표가 이뤄졌는데, 흑백함 투표였다는군요. 모두가 지켜보는 가운데 찬성/반대만을 밝혀야 하는. 토지개혁 뒤에는 소련에 식량이 반출되는 바람에 아사자가 속출했다죠. 아, 이 이야기들은 집안 어른들께 들은 게 아니라 책에서 본 겁니다. 물론 이런 일들이 모두 할아버지께서 월남하기 전에 또는 월남을 결정하기 전에 일어나진 않았을 겁니다. 하지만 역사책을 보는 우리와 달리, 그곳에 사셨던 분께서는 돌아가는 꼴이 대강 보였을 겁니다. 지상낙원이 하루 아침에 막장으로 변해버렸을 리는 없고, 싹수가 뻔했겠죠. 좌익이셨으니 역사발전법칙을 신뢰하셨겠지만, 당신께서 그토록 꿈꾸며 투쟁했던 해방을 맞았지만, 당신께서 우러르던 영웅들의 저런 꼴을 지켜보는 마음은 참담하셨을 겁니다. 결국 수많은 월남민과 같이 고향으로 돌아오셨습니다만.... 문제는 남쪽도 만만치 않은 막장이었다는 거죠. 고향에 오셔서도 좌익활동을 계속하신 것 같습니다. 형제 중 가장 똑똑했다던 네째 할아버지께서도 좌익이셨다죠. 재종조부 말씀으로는, 할아버지께서 야산대(빨치산을 그리 부르시더군요)와 관련이 있으셨다네요. 그런데 좀 온건하셨답니다. 변전소 폭파하자고 하면, 그거 나중에 우리가 쓸건데 왜 폭파하냐고 말리는 식이셨답니다. 왜 그러셨는지는 모르겠습니다. 독립운동의 방편으로 좌익을 택하셨던 것인지, 북에서 돌아가는 꼴을 보셔서 그런 것인지, 성격이 부드러우셨는지... 48~49년에 정부와 좌익의 싸움은 격렬했다지요. 할아버지께서는 경찰에 잡혀가셨습니다. 네째 할아버지가 자수하면 풀어준다며 잡아갔다네요. 당신께서 무슨 짓을 했다고 잡아간 것이 아닌 걸 보면, 경찰은 할아버지께서 좌익활동하신 것은 눈치채지 못한 것인지도 모르겠습니다. 만약 그렇다면, 여러 해 북에 계셨으니 경찰이 눈여겨 보지는 않았던 것이 아닐까 생각해보기도 합니다. 별로 열심히 활동하지는 않으셨던 게 아닐까 생각해 보기도 합니다. 처자식도 있고, 북에서 본 것도 있으실테니 열의가 많이 식으셨던 것일까요? 보도연맹가입이 언제였는지는 모르겠습니다. 좌익활동을 눈치 못채고 전력때문에 가입시켰는지도 모르겠네요. 좌익활동을 눈치챘다면 그 죄목으로 잡아갔을테니까요. 갇혀계실 때, 함께 있던 사람들 가운데 누군가 목을 매자 할아버지께서 구해내셨다네요. 어찌될지 뻔히 보여서 죽으려 한 사람과, 그걸 알면서도 살려내는 사람...그걸 보고 경찰이 할아버지에게 당신이 저 사람들 관리하라고 했답니다. 재소자 중 방장 쯤을 시킨 모양입니다. 할머니를 따라 면회간 아버지에게, 할아버지는 그냥 공부 잘하라는 말만 남기셨습니다. 이제 제가 할아버지보다 조금 더 나이를 먹었습니다. 죽음을 앞두고 찾아온 꼬맹이 아들에게 무슨 말을 할 수 있을까... 아마 저라도 그랬을 것 같습니다. 그리고 한국전이 터집니다. 아버지 말씀으로는 할아버지의 동창이 그때 경찰에 있어서, 할아버지는 빠져나오실 수도 있었는데 그러지 않으셨다고 합니다. 하지만 동창이 있다고 빠져나올 수 있는 상황이었는지는 모르겠습니다. 지금도 그렇지만 당시 지역사회는 다 아는 사람들이었고, 그들끼리 학살이 이루어졌죠. 타 지역 경찰이 동원되어서 학살한 게 아닙니다. 동창이 빼줄 수도 있었겠지만, 내전상황에서 쉬운 일은 아니었을 겁니다. 트럭에 실려 가시면서 웃옷을 벗어서 길가의 농부에게 던져주셨답니다. 난 이제 옷이 필요없는 곳으로 가니, 당신이 쓰라는 뜻이셨겠죠. 지금이야 남이 입던 옷 누가 입겠습니까마는, 옛날엔 흔히들 얻어입고/팔고 했죠. 밤에 순사가 들이닥쳐서는 집에서 괜찮은 옷가지 같은 것들은 쓸어가고는 했을 정도였다니까요. 트럭에 실려가는 모습을 친동생(고모할머니)이 보았습니다만, 가족들에게 말해주지 않다가 2000년대가 되어서야 큰고모에게 말했답니다. 아마 처음에 무서워서 말을 못했고, 그 뒤엔 말할 때를 놓쳐서 못했겠죠. 그러다가 이제 살날이 얼마 안남았다는 생각이 들자, 무거운 짐을 벗어버리는 마음으로 말해준 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 하지만 그 얘기를 들은 큰 고모는 며칠 밤을 잠 못드셨습니다. 그때 말해줬다면 시체라도 찾을 수 있었을텐데 하는 생각에. 큰고모는 그걸 왜 이제 말하냐, 이제 말할거면 그냥 말하지 말았어야 하는거 아니냐시네요. 아버지께서는, 할아버지께서 돌아가셨다는 것을 전하자, 네째 할아버지께서'무어!!' 하고 벌떡 일어나 뛰어나가시던 것을 기억하십니다. 그리고 할아버지 장례식 때 놀고 있자니, 저게 뭘 알겠냐며 어른들이 혀를 차던 일도. 아버지 기억으로는 네째 할아버지께서는 권총을 차고 다니셨다죠. 그리고 네째 할아버지 잡기 위해 할아버지를 잡아갈 정도라면, 네째 할아버지는 어느 정도 높은 자리가 아니었나 생각해 봅니다. 아무튼 네째할아버지는 인천상륙작전으로 전세가 뒤집어지자 사라지셨답니다. 아버지께서는, 만약 무사히 북으로 갔다면 남파되었을 텐데, 남파되지 않은 것으로 보아 돌아가신 것 같다고 하십니다. 책을 보니, 충청도당 빨치산은 도토리부대로 불릴 정도로 약했고, 몰살당했답니다. 생포되었다면 출옥 후 돌아오셨을텐데, 그게 아닌 걸 보면 살아남지 못하신 듯 합니다. 세째 할아버지는 할아버지의 원수를 갚는다고 나서셨다가, 인천상륙작전으로 전세가 뒤집히자 처형당하셨습니다. 결국 할아버지 4형제 가운데 둘째할아버지 딱 한분만이 살아남으셨습니다- 어린 시절 열병을 잘못 앓아 지능이 낮은 덕에. 전쟁이 어찌되든 농사만 짓고 아무 일도 하지 않으신 할머니도 잡혀가셨습니다. 경찰에서 고문을 했지만 버텨내셨고, 동네에서 지장을 찍어가며 연판장을 돌려 결백을 증명해준 덕에 살아 돌아오셨습니다. 그때 잡혀갔다가 살아돌아온 사람이 동네에 딱 둘이었다던가요. 아버지는 온몸이 타이어처럼 시커멓게 되어 돌아오신 할머니를 기억하십니다. 언젠가 할머니께서, 전기고문 받으면 '속이 타서 물을 한 말은 마시고 싶어진다'고 말씀하신 것도 기억나네요. 큰 고모도 잡혀갔습니다. '옆집에서 된장 얻어다가 인민군 밥해준 것 밖에 없다'고 했습니다만, 경찰 하나가 고모를 보고 '쟨 내꺼다'라고 했다네요. 다행히 다른 경찰이 '너희 아버지가 참 좋은 사람이었는데 그렇게 되었다. 풀어줄테니 가서 조용히 살아라'했고, 무사히 돌아오셨답니다. 하루 아침에 집안이 박살났습니다. 딸도 유치원까지 보냈던 시절은 남으로 오면서 끝났습니다만. 제가 알기로는 고모들 모두 소학교 2학년 중퇴였습니다. 아버지 딱 하나만 정규교육을 받으셨습니다. 그나마 고등학교 졸업에는 6년이 걸렸다네요. 네째할아버지네는 더 고생했답니다. 아버지께서 수십년만에 만났더니, 신앙이 아니었다면 그 시절을 정말 이겨내지 못했을거라-자살했을거라고- 하더라는군요. 재산이 꽤 있던 증조할아버지께서는 하나 남은 아들에게 주고 가셨거든요. 거동도 못하고 우리 집에 누워 계시다가, 죽음이 다가오는 것을 깨닫자 재종할아버지를 부르셔서는 '나 좀 업어라'- 그리고 둘째 아들 집으로 가서는 돌아가셨답니다. 아버지께서는 증조할아버지를 정말 많이 원망하셨습니다. 한겨울 개울에서 얼음 깨가면서 증조할아버지 똥빨래를 해야 했던 고모들에게도 증조할아버지 재산은 남의 것이었으니까요. 그 가난을 겪지 않아서인지... 제 어머니께서는 가장 불쌍한 사람이 증조할아버지라고 하십니다. 하루 아침에 장성한 아들 셋을 앞세우고, 덜떨어진 아들 하나 남기는 사람이 어떻게 해야 했겠냐고. 아버지 평생 한이 할아버지 시신을 못찾은 것이었습니다. 할아버지께서 어디로 끌려가셨는지도 알 수 없는 걸 보니, 타도로 끌려가셨을 거라고 생각하셨죠. 고모할머니 말씀을 듣고서도 할아버지 끌려가신 곳을 알아볼 생각을 못했다가, 몇년 지나서야 '이제라도 찾아봐야 겠다'는 생각을 하셨죠. 수소문 했더니... 읍내 바로 옆 산이었습니다. 폐광지에서 학살했는데, 시신을 대충 처박다보니 동네 꼬마들이 해골을 차면서 놀았다죠. 피해자 유족들만 몰랐던 겁니다. 할머니, 아버지, 고모 모두 그곳에서 나고 자란 분들입니다. 친척들, 친구들 모두 그 곳에 삽니다. 그런데도 아무도 말을 안해줬던 거죠. 저희 집안이 사람대접 못받을 흉악한 것들이라서 그랬나? 일찍 시신을 수습해간 몇 빼고는 나머지 희생자들도 다 같은 모양입니다. 하긴 친동생도 50년 넘게 입을 다물었는데, 말해 뭐합니까. 역사 속에서 죽고산 숱한 사람들..... 세월 속에 하나씩 스러져갑니다. 그게 아쉬워 저는 쓴 글을 또 썼구요. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2020-05-22 23:27) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
