저는 나름 해외유학 경험이 있어서, 꼴에 영어 쪼까 할줄 안다고, 레딧이나 트위터, 유튜브 등지에서 영미권 사람들이 쓴 글들, 영문으로 쓰인 칼럼을 자주 읽는 편인데요. 영미권 사람들이 쓴 글을 읽으면 읽을 수록, 한국인들과 영미인들이 사고방식이 달라도 너무 다르다고 느껴집니다. 최근 가장 강하게 느껴지는 차이가 바로 '공동체(Community)'라는 단어에 대한 인식차이입니다. 전 심신에 문제가 있어 군복무를 할 수 없는 인원을 강제로 동원하는 사회복무요원제도, 현역병에 대한 과도학 착취, 양심적 병역거부자 처벌 등 한국의 징병제 전반에 대단히 비판적인 입장인데요, 그래서 이거가지고 인터넷에서 키배도 정말 많이 떴습니다. 한 10여년 전에는 '넌 애국심도 없냐.' 같은 말을 들어먹었는데, 헬조선 밈이 돌면서 '애국심', '국가'라는 단어 자체의 어감이 좀 안좋아져서 그런지 요새는 '공동체 의식이 없다.', '공동체에 대한 최소한의 의무' 따위의 말을 들어먹습니다. 사실상 국가가 공동체로 치환된거죠. 이런 현상을 보았을 때, 한국인들에게 있어서 공동체란 국가와 동일시 된다고 여겨집니다. 그런데 영미인들이 'Community'에 대해 말하는걸 보면... 얘네들은 기본적으로 공동체(Community)와 국가(State)를 대립항으로 두는 경우가 많아요. 영미인들이 Community하면 떠올리는건 국가나 민족이 아니라, 나와 내 가족이 속한 지역사회 입니다. 그리고 중앙집권화된 국가권력이 내가 속한 Community를 파괴할 수도 있다는 생각이 영미인들 사고기저 전반에 깔려있습니다. 그래서 내가 속한 지방정부의 결정은 순순히 따르다가도 중앙정부의 지시에는 불만을 표하는 사람들이 많고요. 이게 가장 선명하게 보이는게 미국의 연방정부와 주 정부의 갈등이지만, 제 경험상 영국, 캐나다, 호주인들도 비슷한 심리를 가진 경우가 대단히 많았습니다. 사실 동아시아에서 한국만큼이나 영미권 문화에 친숙한 국가는 없다고 보는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 심층심리는 거의 외계인 수준으로 차이가 나는게 바로 영미인과 한국인 아닌가 싶습니다. 아주 간단한 단어조차도 서로 정 반대로 인식하는걸 보면요. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2020-05-09 16:37) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다. 저도 community라 하면 "동네" 정도로 이해합니다. community center는 동사무소 정도 느낌이고요. 적고 보니 community를 공동체라고 번역은 하지만 정말 같은 뜻인지는 모르겠네요.
ps 지금 영한 사잔 찾아보니 community가 2번째 의미로 공동체가 있는데 1번째 의미는 지역사회네요. 전 보통 1번의 의미로 생각합니다.
