태어나 단 한권의 무협지를 끝까지 읽어본 적이 없다. 딱히 자랑할 일도 부끄러울 일도 아닐 것이다. 다만 어린 시절 우연히 무협보다 판타지를 먼저 접해 그 세계관에 익숙해졌기 때문일 것이다. 그렇다고 뭐 판타지 소설을 엄청나게 읽은 것도 아니지만. 이런 이야기를 친구들에게 할 때마다 뭔가 이것저것을 잔뜩 추천받았는데, 딱히 끌리는 작품은 없었다. 대충 찾아보니 이건 그닥 재미없어보이는군. 1권 무료네 세페이지 읽고 나니 하루의 독서력이 끝나버리네. 그러다 우연히 친구에게 무림사계를 추천받았다. 진퉁 느와르라고. 그래. 느와르라면 무협보다 쉽게 읽히겠지. 인터넷 찾아보니 평도 좋네. 하는 간단한 생각으로 무림사계를 읽기 시작했다. 그렇게 나는 태어나서 처음으로 무협지 한 권을 완독했고, 그걸 넘어 무협지 한 시리즈를 다 읽게 되었다. 그 과정에서 최초로 전자책이라는 걸 소장하게 되었다. 짧은 내 독서인생에서 그랜드 슬램을 달성한 것이다. 대단한데. 왜 어릴 때 이걸 몰랐을까. 1. 악인들의 활극 일상의 악들이 대체로 못난 것처럼, 슬프게도, 창작 세계의 악들이란 대체로 유치하다. 창작물 속 악인들이란 몇 가지 조잡한 모에 포인트의 혼종이거나, 중2병이거나, '씁 불운한 인생 어쩔 수 없지' 정도에서 정리된다. 이 혐의는 무림사계에도 적용된다. 주인공 담진현은 판에 박힌 듯한 악인이다. 그는 스승의 여자와 붙어먹고, 공금횡령과 대화재로 소속문파인 철혈문을 말아먹은, 도박중독자다. 이 사고들은 대체로 '씁 불운한 인생 어쩔 수 없지'의 맥락에 속해 있다. 주인공의 설정 자체가 매력적일 건 없다. 1권의 주요 악역으로 등장하는 항주의 다양한 실력자들과 무림고수, 산적 친구들도 마찬가지다. 무림의 힘과 무공을 이용해 사람을 후드려패고 착취하며 매음굴을 도박장을 아편굴을 운영하는 그저 그런 폭력배들이다. 뻔하다. 그들이 얽히고 섥히며 서로의 뒤통수에 칼을 박아넣고 술잔에 독을 탄다. 오, 이건 좀 더 보도록 하자. 무림사계의 무림은 선악이 대립하는 곳이 아니다. 무림사계의 무림은 조폭물의 뒷골목, 정치물의 정국처럼, 철저하게 중립적인 악의 세계일 뿐이다. 협객이란 놈들은 세금도 제대로 내지 않으며 싸움질이나 하며 도박판을 전전하며 알량한 개인의 무력으로 아편장사나 마약장사를 거드는 조폭에 불과하다. 고전적인 느와르 세계관의 악인이라면 '대충 모두가 착하고 대충 모두가 적당히 악한' 세계 속의 악인보다 훨씬 더 합리적이고 입체적인 캐릭터가 된다. 그들이 치는 사고는, 말이 되니까. 석방평의 죽음은 소설 전체에서 가장 미학적인 장면일 것이다. 끈 떨어진 주인공을 고용해 적을 조용히 해치우고, 후에 주인공도 해치울 계획을 세운 석방평은 계획을 간파한 주인공에게 살해당한다. 이는 <고용된 암살자> 가 주인공으로 등장하는 홍콩 영화나 야쿠자 만화나 무협 소설에서 수십 수백 수만번은 반복된 클리셰일 것이다. 하지만 이 클리셰는 깔끔하게 변주된다. 주인공은 그의 저택에 침입하고, 한바탕 대소동이 펼쳐진다. 대소동 속에서 석방평의 부인-소시민은 <또 남편의 불량한 친구가 밤늦게 찾아온 모양이군>이라고 생각하며 부부싸움을 시작하고, 석방평은 그런 마누라를 구박하며 '가서 술이나 데워오라'고 쫓아낸다. 부인은 술을 데우고, 남편을 생각해 콩나물국도 데운다. 그동안 석방평은 주인공을 물리친다. 주인공은 큰 부상을 입고 도망치고 마침내 마누라는 데워 온 술을 가져온다. 그는 하루를 반추하며 술을 마시고, 피를 토하며 죽는다. 아뿔싸, 주인공이 대소동의 와중에 술을 데우는 마누라를 발견하고 술잔에 독을 탄 것이다. 영문도 모르며 울고 있는 늙은 아내의 품에 안겨 죽어가며 석방평은 생각한다. 그래도 지금껏 내가 손가락을 자르고 고문하고 머리를 짓이겨 죽여버렸던 놈들보다는 편안하게 죽는구나. 나쁘지 않은 죽음이다. '오랜만에 만져 본 아내의 손은 지금껏 만져 본 어떤 여자의 손보다 거칠었다. 하지만 편안했다......억울하지도 않다. 무림인으로 살다가 무림인으로 죽는 것이니까. 단지 마누라에게 좋은 말 한마디 못 해줬다는 게 마음에 걸린다.' 주인공은 술잔에 독을 타던 순간을 회상한다. '나는 할머니가 콩나물국을 끓이는 광경을 지켜보았다. 당장 떠나고 싶지만 발이 떨어지지 않았다. 석방평이야 나쁜 놈이 맞지만 저 할머니가 무슨 잘못일까. 늦은 밤, 남편을 위해 술과 국을 준비하는 할머니다. 자신이 가져다 준 술을 먹고 남편이 죽는 걸 보면 기분이 어떨까.' 그렇게 생각한 그는 가만 놔둬도 석방평을 독살할 수 있는 상황에서 굳이 할머니, 석방평의 아내에게 마음의 짐을 주지 않기 위해 석방평에게 찾아가 대결하고, 큰 부상을 입고 도망치게 된 것이다. 결국 석방평은 아내의 눈 앞에서 아내의 술잔 때문에 죽었고, 주인공의 계획은 모두 틀어진다. 무림사계의 세계에서 인간은 우연히 때때로 악하지 않다. 인간은 그저 악할 뿐이고, 우연히 때때로 선해진다. 석방평처럼 그리고 담진현처럼. 그리고 그것이 인간됨을 만든다. 이는 '모두가 단순히 악하다'는 중2병적 세계관과 질적으로 다른, 어떤 '투쟁하며 전진하는 희망의 세계관'이다. 등장하는 다른 인물들의 삶과 죽음도 마찬가지다. 등장하는 사내놈들이란 대체로 모두가 악인에 무뢰배들이지만, 충동적 선의로 인해 인간적인 고뇌를 하게 되고, 하여 그들의 결행과 사건은 꼬여만 간다. 지역사회 내의 단순한 파벌갈등에서 시작한 사소한 살인사건은 지역 내 파벌의 전면전이 되고, 지역을 넘어 문파간 갈등으로 비화하고, 사람이 수십 수백씩 죽어가며 피의 강이 바다가 되고, 무림 전체가 혼란에 빠진다. 그리고 마침내 이 커다란 서사는 어떠한 '다음 세계'를 향한 희망찬 발걸음이 된다. 잠깐, 이거 어디서 많이 들어본 서사 구조 아닌가. 그 왜 헤겔이라거나 맑스라거나 하는 그. 변증법인가 뭔가 하는 그 그거. 2. 도망치는 자의 노래. 주인공은 끊임없이 도망친다. 애초에 고향의 문파를 말아먹고 항주로 도망 온 놈팽이었고, 항주에서도 석방평 사망을 둘러싼 커다란 사건에 엮이게 되어 소주로 도망치고, 소주에서 더 큰 사건을 내며 소림으로 도망치고, 마침내 소림은 쑥대밭이 되고 무림 전체는 대혼란의 위기에 봉착한다. '한몫 단단히 잡아 어디 저기 멀리 조선땅이라도 숨어들어가 평생 조용하고 안온하게 살고 싶다'는 그의 욕망이 그를 뒷골목의 비열한 도망자로 만든다. 그렇지 않으면 그의 삶이란 '언젠가 누군가의 눈먼 화살이나 애먼 칼날에 맞아 죽게 되는, 수많은 무림인을 자처하는 건달들이 맞이하게 되는 삶'에 머물게 될 것이니. 도망자인 그에게 동료를 맞이하는 것도, 여자와 깊게 얽히는 것도, 책임을 져야 하는 것도 모두 가급적 사양하고 싶은 일이다. 하지만 세계는 그의 욕망에 완연하게 적대한다. 세계는 그에게 동료와 여자와 책임을 지우려 한다. 그는 어떻게든 자기와 얽힌 사람을 버리려 하고, 여자와 손도 잡지 않으려 하며, 빨리 한몫 잡아 조선으로 뜨려고 하지만 조선행 배편은 애저녁에 날아가고, 동료는 늘어나다 못해 지들끼리 의형제를 맺기 시작하며, 손 한번 제대로 잡지 못한 주변 여자는 점점 늘어난다. 아, 여기서 끝나면 좋으련만. 마침내 주동 세력의 지도자나 반동 세력의 지도자나 그에게 '세계에 대한 결단'을 요구한다. 그의 도망으로 발생하게 된 일련의 우연적인 사건들의 연속으로, 그는 일약 무림계의 슈퍼스타가 되어버렸으니. 미칠 일이다. 그렇다고 '아 네 그러죠' 하고 운명의 주동에 목숨을 맡길 주인공 담진현이 아니다. 주체적 욕망이 명하는 도망과 적대적 세계가 명령하는 결단이 끊임없이 대립하고, 그 투쟁의 결과로 <사건>들이 발생한다. 새로운 사건의 지평에서 새롭게 태어난 주체는 그를 태어나게 한 세계와 대립하고 그것이 다음 사건으로 이어진다. 세계가 끊임없이 역동하고 주인공도 끊임없이 변화하며 대립해간다. 좋은 의도는 나쁜 결과가 되고, 그렇게 한 걸음 한 걸음이 모여 하나의 거대한 <역사>가 완성된다. 잠깐만 어 이거 그거 변증법 그거... 담진현 뿐 아니다. 배상훈도 못난이 3형제도, 앵앵도, 이지아도, 주인공과 얽힌 인간들이란 모두들 <운명>의 주동으로부터 도망친 자들이다. 세계라는 거대한 존재와의 투쟁에서 개인이 택할 수 있는 <자유>의 첫 발자국은 <도피>다. 가문의 명예로부터 도망치고, 더 강한 자들로부터 도망치고, 남편과 집안으로부터 도망쳐, 세계의 명령과 적대하며 자신의 삶을 만드는 사람들. 그들이 각자 부르는 노래가 대립하고 또 이어지며 하나의 거대한 <선율>을 만들어낸다. 3. 변증법의 알레고리 창작론을 듣다보면 귀에 못에 박히게 되는 단어가 있다. 알레고리. 상징적 구조주의라고 해야 되나. 이걸 어떻게 설명하지. 아 모르겠다. 아무튼 뭐 그런게 있다. 쉽게 설명하자면 주제-상징의 일대일 대응이 아닌 상징의 구조성-주제의 구조성의 대응을 통해 주제를 드러내는 일종의 은유법이라고 해야 하나 라고 하려고 하는데 그게 안 쉬운 거 같기도 하고 아무튼..짧게 쓰려던 독서 메모가 이렇게 길어지다니...이게 아닌데.. 주인공과 주인공 일행 뿐 아니라 주인공의 문파, 그리고 주인공 일행과 적대하는 세력들의 내부에도 이러한 '주체적 욕망과 세계의 적대 사이의 끊임없는 갈등의 극복을 통해 발생하는 변증법적 역동'의 서사가 알레고리적으로 끊임없이 반복된다. 예로부터 소설의 주제의식을 표현하는 데 있어 알레고리가 제일이라 했다. 제이 제삼의 방책이 뭔지는 잘 모르겠다 그걸 알면 나도 소설가가 되었을까. 관부 출신을 중심으로 '무림의 평화'를 구축하기 위해 설립된 정의의 단체 <태원이가>에게 있어, 무림은 세계에 대한 명확한 반정립이다. 그들에게 무림은 국가가 마땅히 독점해야 할 '행정적 폭력'을 전유해 백성을 착취하는 불량배 패거리일 뿐이고, 하여 그들이 생각하는 무림의 평화는 무림의 해체다. 태원이가는 무림을 해체하고, 힘좀 쓴다는 놈팽이들에게 자신의 재능을 살린 군역을 지우고 세금을 걷어 '평화로운 국가'라는 변증법적 목표를 향해 움직인다. 계획이 거의 완수되려나는 찰나, 내부에서 또다른 갈등이 발생하고 또 발생해, 결국은 세계를 위해 무림을 존치하기로 결정한다. 그렇다. 변증법적 역동이란 영원한 지양의 과정이다. 담진현이 속한 문파 <철혈문>의 무공은 역사의 어느 순간에 그 비급이 도난당하게 되고 전승이 제대로 되지 못하는 상태다. 이후의 어느 계승자가 철혈문의 초식을 힘겹게 복원/창조해내나, 그 <초식>에 걸맞는 <내공 운용>을 복원하는 데에는 실패하고 이후로 쭉 그저그런 2류무공으로 겨우 유지되며 주인공 대에 이른 것이다. 내 비록 무협에 일천하지만, 초식과 내공의 대립은 뭐랄까 이와 기, 랑그와 빠홀, 시니피앙과 시니피에, 딜도와 오나홀, 형태와 질료, 뭐 아무튼 수많은 존재론적 이원론의 메타포라는 정도는 대충 들은 기억이 있다 이기. 그리고 주인공은 무협의 클리셰인 <기연>을 통해 내공을 전수받아 초식만 남아있던 철혈문의 무공을 <합일>의 경지에 끌어올리는 데 성공한다. 나는 이 장면에서 엄청 감탄했는데, 이 장면에 대해 이야기하니 이 소설을 추천한 친구는 '그거 기연이라고 무협소설 전개의 클리셰임'이라고 시크하게 말했다. 이 기연이 서사 전개를 위한 클리셰라 할 지라도, 이는 서사적 알레고리를 완성하는 핵심적 한 조각이 된다고 생각한다. 세 가지 점에서 그러한데, 하나는 이 기연이 <주인공이 강해짐>을 위한 도입부/위기극복의 장치가 아닌 <서사의 종결>을 위한 결말부에 이루어지는 사건이라는 것이고, 다른 하나는 이 기연의 주체가 이 소동의 거대한 배후, 악당놈인 <태원이가>의 대장을 통해 이루어진다는 것이다. 그리고 마지막 하나는, 철혈문의 제자들은 소실된 내공 운용의 비법을 찾기 위해 다른 무공을 참조하고 별의 별 비급서를 읽어댔지만 결국 찾는 데 실패했는데, 사실 그 비급서는 그동안 <황궁 저장고> 그러니까 무림과 적대하는 <관아>의 깊은 곳에 잠들어 있었다는 것이다. 관은 무림을 적대하고, 무림은 관과 적대한다. 주인공은 태원이가와 적대하고 '철혈문'의 합일은 그러한 적대의 투쟁 속에서 비로소 완성된다. 도망자 담진현의 새로운 삶과 희망이 펼쳐지고, 무림과 세계의 새로운 미래가 피어난다. 오직 적대의 투쟁을 통해서. 4. 총론과 아쉬움. 어긋난 선의가 보편적 악의의 세계와 대립하고, 협객이 관아와 대치하고, 추적자와 도망자가 얽히고 섥히는 가운데, 한바탕 대소동이 일어나고, 피의 소나기가 후두둑 쏟아져내린다. 그렇게 하나의 무공이 내공과 초식의 합일을 이야기를 이루고, 그렇게 하나의 세계적 서사가 완성된다. 재밌는 소설이었다. 글의 템포도 좋다. 술과 도박과 여자를 앞에 둔 소심한 도망자의 내면 묘사는 능히 도스토예프스키나 다자이 오사무와 겨룰 만하다. 농담이 슬슬 늘어지는데, 싶을 때 끊는 재주도 좋다. 읽는 재미가 좋은 소설이었다. 소설은 전체적으로 정말 재밌었고(1권을 최고로 치는데, 이후로도 쭉 재밌다) 결말부의 <해소>는 전율을 일으킬 정도였다. 다만 뜬금없이 닌자가 나오는 건 좀 슬펐다. 닌자3형제가 나오는 모든 장면에서 그들을 대신하여 닌자거북이가 등장한다고 해도 작품이 더 나빠지지는 않을 거라는 생각이 들 정도로 좀 그랬다. 뭐, 아무튼 그러하다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2020-03-20 17:58) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
