Sexualities, 22(7–8), 1234–1252. https://doi.org/10.1177/1363460718791898 개요 전통적으로 성인물 소비 연구는 남성의 성인물 소비가 어떤 식으로 여성 파트너나 사회에 부정적인 영향을 끼치는지를 탐색했어요. 포르노그라피를 보면서 왜곡된 남성들의 인식이 여성을 대상화하거나, 여성들이 포르노그라피를 통해 왜곡된 여성 신체상을 받아들이면서 스스로를 부정적으로 인식하게 된다거나 하는 식으로요. 이러한 연구들은 분명 유효하지만, 최근에는 조금 다른 연구들도 나오고 있어요. 여성들이 성인물 소비를 통해 어떤 이득을 얻을 수 있는가를 탐구하는 연구는 그 중 하나에 속해요. 2014년 나온 Beth Montemurro의 Deserving Desire: Women’s Stories of Sexual Evolution는 Erotic self 그러니까 성적인 자아상이 지닌 중요성을 강조했어요. 성적 주체성 (Sexual Subjectivity)는 "성적 조우에서의 주체성(agency in sexual encounter) 즉, 성적인 욕망을 지니고, 이를 실행에 옮기는 능력 (pp. 20-22)"을 뜻하는데, 생애과정 속에서 성적 주체성을 잘 발전시킨 여성들이 성적 경험을 긍정적으로 할 가능성이 높지요. 성적인 자기탐색은 단순히 쾌락으로만 국한되는 것이 아니라, 성적 정의(erotic justice)라는 관점으로 자연스레 연결되어요. 성적인 관계는 쾌락 뿐만 아니라 사랑, 돌봄, 타인과의 연결과 긴밀하게 결부될 수밖에 없기 때문에, 관계에 기반하는 존엄과 평등으로 이어지게 되거든요. 성적 주체성의 발전 과정에서 성인물 소비가 어떤 영향을 주는가?라는 질문은 바로 위에 언급했던 맥락 속에 놓이지요. 그렇지만 여타의 성인물이 어떤 식으로 섹스를 묘사하고, 구성하는가는 페미니즘이 격렬하게 비판했던 지점이기도 해요. 1970년 후반에 시작된 안티 포르노그라피 운동은 포르노그라피가 남성과 여성 사이의 위계적인 관계를 재생산하고, 여성 신체를 비인간화/상품화한다고 지적했어요. 하지만 이러한 포르노 반대 담론은 반대로 여성의 섹슈얼리티, 판타지, 성적인 자기탐색을 검열하는 효과를 낳기도 했어요. 여성들이 자신의 성적 지향을 둘러싸고 죄책감, 수치심, 혼란을 느끼는 것을 강화했거든요. 그래서 포르노그라피를 찬성하는 페미니스트들은 성인물 그 자체가 아니라 그 생산 과정이나 내용을 비판하고, 여성들이 성인물을 통해서 얻을 수 있는 성적인 자기탐색이나, 성적 주체성의 발전은 그대로 남겨두자고 주장해요. 이 연구는 이러한 맥락 속에 위치해요. 저자들은 28명의 여성들과 인터뷰를 해서 그들이 어떤 식으로 성인물을 소비하고 그 속에서 긍정적인 효과를 얻었는지 탐색했어요. 연구참여자들은 대다수가 백인 여성이고, 대학교 이상의 교육을 받았어요. 성적 정체성은 다섯은 이성애자, 여섯은 양성애자, 여섯은 범성애자, 둘은 퀴어, 한 명은 동성애자, 한 명은 젠더 플루이드였고, 남은 한 명은 성향을 밝히지 않았어요. (그 외의 다른 연구참여자 특징들은 원문 1238-1239 페이지를 참고해주시기 바라요) 이러한 연구참여자 특징을 감안하고 본문을 봐주시면 됩니다. 본문 중 일부 아래의 내용은 모두 가명입니다. 본문 중 절반의 장만 소개하고, 그 중에서도 많이 덜어냈습니다. 성인물 소비의 개인적 이득은? 인터뷰 도중 연구참여자들은 개인적인 이득을 자주 언급합니다. 특히 성인물 소비가 자신들의 성적 자아를 발견하는 과정에 긍정적인 영향을 주었다고 하지요. 성적 지향(sexuality), 성적 행위(sexual practice), 성적으로 자유로워지거나(liberation), 성적 역량감(empowerment)을 느끼는 것을 모두 포함해서요. 예를 들어, 매기(Maggie)는 섹스에 대한 이야기를 쉬쉬하는 매우 종교적인 집안에서 자랐는데, 20대 중반에 성인물을 보면서 자신의 신체를 알아가기 시작했다고 해요. "살다가 어느 순간에 의식적으로 결정을 내렸어요. 이게 내가 알아가고 싶은 것이다 이런 결정이요. 그리고 여러 가지 수단을 동원했어요. 성인 잡지를 사고, 포르노를 보고, 바이브레이터를 샀어요. 무엇이 나를 흥분시키는지 탐색하고, 스스로에 대해서 하나씩 하나씩 알아가기 시작했어요. (I kind of made this very intentional decision at some point [that] this was something I wanted to explore and I did that through lots of means. I bought erotica. I looked at porn. I bought a vibrator ... exploring what turns me on and learning about myself a little)" (p. 1241) 피오나(Fiona)는 보수적인 농촌 공동체에서 자랐지만, 동성애에 끌림을 경험했어요. 어느 날 케이블 TV에서 나온 레즈비언 섹스와 관계를 다룬 자료는, 그녀가 스스로를 발견하고 받아들이게 된 중요한 계기였지요. "저는 카톨릭 학교에 다녔고, 16살이 되기 전까지 레즈비언이라는 단어를 들어본 적이 없었어요. 그래서 제가 어떤 느낌을 가지는지도 완전히 몰랐고, 동성에게 끌림을 느낄 때마다 억누르려고 노력했어요... The L-Word라는 프로그램이 기억나요. 저는 프로그램의 일분 일초를 다 사랑했어요. 제가 주변에서 볼 수 있던 거라고는 머리를 짧게 짜른 여자 하키 선수들 뿐이었거든요. 제가 레즈비언이라는 걸 깨달았을 때, 이런 하키 선수들의 모습은 제가 지향하는 것과는 거리가 있었어요. 전 머리를 자르고 싶지 않았거든요. L-Word에서는 여성적인(femine) 레즈비언들이 나왔고, 그런 관계도 좋다고 나와있었지요. 그래서 저는 "그래, 할 수 있어. 이래도 괜찮아"라고 스스로에게 말했어요. (I went to a Catholic school and had never heard the word ‘‘lesbian’’ until I was 16. So I didn’t really know completely what was going on and if I did I was kind of trying to suppress it ... I remember watching [The L-Word] and just like loving it, loving every minute of it. Like the only thing I had access to growing up would have been female hockey players with the short haircuts. And I remember thinking .. . when I realized I was gay, this has nothing to do with me. I don’t want that .. . I don’t want to cut my hair off. So I was watching the L-word and seeing more feminine lesbians and seeing relationships work. I was like, ‘‘OK, I can do that. This is OK.’’)" (p. 1241) 성인물 소비는 여성들이 자신의 신체나 정체성을 수용하는 계기가 되기도 해요. 케샤나(Keshana)는 자신을 풀 사이즈 우먼(full-size woman)이라고 기술했어요. 성인물 소비는 그녀가 big, beautiful woman (BBW)라는 장르를 통해 자신과 같은 사람들도 누군가에게 성적으로 매력적일 수 있다는 걸 깨닫게 해주었지요. 성인물을 통해 성적 행위를 배우고, 자신의 포지션을 배우는 경우도 있어요. 실비아(Sylvia)는 팬픽이나, 야설이 어떻게 BDSM을 안전하고 즐겁게 하는지 배우는데 큰 도움이 되었다고 언급해요. 에리얼(Ariel)은 어떤 식으로 클리토리스 자위를 하는지 글을 통해 배웠다고 밝히고요. 자위 행위는 터부시되지만 인간이 스스로의 성적 역량감을 발전시키기 위해 중요한 수단이에요. 여성의 자위 행위가 사회적으로 터부시되는 경향이 강하기 때문에, 역설적으로 자위를 위해 포르노를 적극적으로 활용하는 행위는 기존 사회 질서에 도전하는 의미를 지니게 되기도 해요. 코라(Cora)는 여성의 성적 지향을 통제하려는 사회적 강요에 반항한다는 의식이 뚜렷했어요. "세상한테 엿이나 먹으라는 거지요. 내가 뭘 할 수 있고 없는지, 뭘 볼 수 있고 없는지 통제할 수 없다고 통제하게 두지 않을 거예요 (‘‘it’s a bit of a fuck you to society. I’m not going to let you tell me what I can and cannot do, watch, cannot watch [or] read.’’). 자씬타(Jacinta)도 비슷한 이야기를 해요. "전 오르가즘을 느낄 때 내가 내 뜻대로 할 수 있다는 힘을 느껴요 ...나는 여성이고, 난 포르노를 보고 있다고!" 소비를 둘러싼 긴장 연구에 참여한 여성들은 사회가 남성보다 여성의 성인물 소비에 덜 수용적이라는 걸 인식하고 있었어요. "여자가 포르노를 소비하는 건 더 금기시되요. 제가 포르노 본다고 솔직하게 밝히면 다니면 이상한 X 취급 받을걸요. 심지어 여자 친구들한테 "야 나 일주일이나 이주일에 한 번은 야동봐"라고 말해도 미친X 취급 받을 거구요. 남자애들은 달라요. 걔들은 남자애들이 똑같이 말하면 "야 신작 나왔냐?"라고 답할걸요. 여자들이 포르노 본다는 건 더 낙인을 지니고, 더 금기시되어요. 스스로의 상황을 정체성으로 받아들이는 사람들을 차별하지 않는 것과, 그것을 사실을 비틀어가면서까지 권면하는 것은 좀 다른 문제라고 생각합니다. 좋은 글 감사합니다.
