주의: 태그 정하기가 애매했는데 일단은 역사란으로 체크했습니다만 이번글은 역사적 사실보다는 제가 듣은 풍문 혹은 경험담의 이야기가 주를 이룹니다. 그래서 정확하지 않은 이야기도 있으니 너무 믿지는 않으시는게 좋고 이런 이야기도 있구나 하고 읽어주시길 바랍니다. 그리고 저보단 다른 분들의 프라이버시를 위해 구체적 내용은 생략한 부분이 있으니 양해부탁드립니다. 수 년전 건강할 무렵 학과 차원에서 당시 진행중인 시민강좌 참석권유를 받았다. 그 시민강좌의 목적 및 내용은 속칭 재야사학계라 불리는 기성 전문가 집단을 부정하는 단체들의 주장을 반박하며 한중일 고대사 논쟁 주제에 대한 올바른 내용을 일반인에게 전달하기 위함이라 들었다. 사실 전공 대학원생에게 있어서 반드시 갈만한 세미나 급은 아니었는데도 내게 권유가 온 것은 좀 다른 이유가 있었다. 바로 유사시 물리적 충돌 방지를 위한 방어용 인원이 필요했기 때문이다. 이미 강좌는 몇차례 진행되었고 이미 그 과정에서 좀 과격한 상황이 연출되었다는 것이다. 시민강좌에서 과격한 상황이라니. 가끔 심심해서 동네 시민강좌같은걸 닥치는대로 듣고다녔던 나는 처음에는 이해할수없었다. 보통 그런곳의 싸움은 한두명의 고성으로 끝나기 마련이었기때문이다. 다만 그때 내 지도교수님이 그쪽의 부탁을 받아 그곳에서 강의를 하게 되셨기에 좀 걱정이 되서 나 역시 참석하기로 이야기를 했다. 강좌 당일 강연장에 참석하니 흔한 시민강좌가 그런것처럼 앞자리는 텅텅 비어있었는데, 후열 뒷자리에 연로하신 분들이 모여서 무언가를 이야기하고 있는 모습이 눈에 들어왔다. 그중 한 명이 나를 발견하고는 말을 건넸다 "혹시 대학원생인가요?" 나는 짧게 긍정한 뒤 더이상의 이야기를 나누지는 않고 사전 계획대로 앞자리에 앉았다. 이후 후배들도 나와 비슷하게 통과치례를 겪는 모습을 보였다. 나중에 듣기로 그들은 의용대를 자처하는 이들로, 각자 무슨 대장군이니 좌수사니 하는 호칭을 쓰며 한국사에 많은 관심을 보이는 단체라고 들었다. 강좌 시작 몇분 전쯤 되자 강연장에는 우리쪽 대학원생 열명 남짓과 그냥 참석한것으로 보이는 일반인 두어명, 그리고 20여명정도로 어느새 늘어난 그 집단이 전부였다. 그들은 강연 시작 직전 갑자기 흩어져 전단지를 돌리기 시작했다. 구체적인 내용은 기억나지않지만 전단지의 기본골자는 간단했다. 지난 강좌때 어떤 한 교수님께서 반민족적 왜곡 주장을 펼치셨다는 것이다. 이쯤되자 왜 내게도 참석부탁이 들어왔는지 알만 했다. 내 지도교수님은 문과계 특성도 있기는하나 기본적으로 자기 일에 학생동원을 그리 좋아하지 않는 편이다. 그런 그 분이 학생들이 방어선 형성을 위해 참석하는것을 묵인할만한 이유가 있긴 했던 것이다. 강의가 시작되었다. 강의 전반부는 설명, 후반부는 질문 위주로 답하며 진행되었는데 문제는 역시 2부부터였다. 2부가 되자 그 무리는 질문이라는 방식의 거센 항의를 시작했다. 다행이도 그날 주제가 그분들에게는 좀 생소한 고고학 자료를 근거로 분석한 내용이었기에 그들은 교수님의 방어를 잘 뚫지는 못했다. 결국 그들은 강연에서 언급도 안한 내용을, 혹은 이미 강연 도중 이미 부정한 내용인데도 교수님이 그것을 긍정했다고 주장하며 비판하기 시작했다. 예정된 수순이었다. 하지만 무언가 더 말할거리를 찾지못했는지 같은 질문만 반복할 뿐 더 나아가진 못했고, 그들의 전단지에 적힌 공격적이며 당당한 내용이 무색할만큼 소극적이게 되었다. 강좌는 어찌어찌 난항을 겪을뻔한 시기를 잘 넘겨 끝을 마무리했다. 다행이도 물리적 충돌은 없었고 그들은 좀 아리송한 표정으로 하나 둘 자리를 뜨기 시작했다. 개 중에는 끝까지 미련을 버리지 못하고 입구 앞에 서서 "여기 문헌기록을 보면..."하며 정성스럽게 자필로 정리한 자신의 노트를 펼쳐보이며 무언가 주장하는 이들도 아직 있었다. 그들의 질문 혹은 주장이 옳고 그른지는 차치하고, 내가 보았을때 그 질문들은 일단 강연내용과는 좀 어긋난 이야기였다. 실제로 강연을 기획한 주최측에서도 이번 강좌때 충돌이 없었던 까닭은 강의 내용 자체가 그들 입장에선 생소했기 때문인것 같다는 의견을 냈다. 물론 나중에 듣기론 의용대분들께선 어떻게든 비판 성명을 내긴했다한다. 내 경험에 기대어보면 전문가에 불신적, 배타적인 역사 단체는 보통 자신들이 가장 자신있어하는 자료에 좀 과하게 기대는 편인 동시에 자신들이 약한 그 외의 자료에 있어서는 해석능력이 떨어진다. 강연장의 의용대들 역시 그러한 모습을 잘 보여주었는데, 그들은 삼국유사니 위서 동이전이니 등을 여러차례 반복해서 언급했지만 정작 강연장에서 소개된 고고학 자료에 대한 질문은 약했다. 이미 한국 고대사 연구는 텍스트 부족으로 오래전부터 필연적으로 중국 고대사 연구성과와 교류할수밖에 없었다. 역사에 조금이라도 관심있는 이라면 늘상 고조선에 대한 이야기를 할때 삼국지 위서 동이전을 참고하는건 이미 흔한 모습임을 알 것이다. 다만 과거에 쓴 글에서도 언급했지만 현시점에서 중국 고대사 연구 트랜드는 고고학 자료의 적극적 활용이 전제된다. 따라서 문헌중심의 연구자 역시 우리에게 익숙한 오래된 역사서, 총칭 전래문헌대신 땅속의 텍스트인 간독이니 금문따위의 1차사료의 내용에 관심을 기울인다. 덕분에 자료가 적어 힘들다는 고대사 연구조차 이제 거시적인 사건 중심 연구에서 벗어나 문헌기록의 계보, 사상의 당시 지리적 특징, 행정조직 및 사법체계, 더 나아가 식생활 등으로 확산한지 오래다. 그만큼 지하자료는 파격적이다. 한국에서도 몇 년전 백제시대 목간이 다량 발견되었다고 학계가 얼마나 열광했던가. 물론 이러한 트렌드 변화덕분에 처음에는 고대사연구에 관심있다고 눈을 반짝이던 학부생들이 차후 실체를 알고 점점 관심을 잃고 도망가는 모습도 종종 보이게 되었지만 말이다. 한편 재야사학계라 총칭되는 이들은 여전히 문헌기록에 많이 의존하고 고고학 자료 해석 능력에 대해서는 약한 편이다. 전문가에 배타적인 속성이 만들어내는 약점으로 보인다. 그러다보니 중국과 일본의 사악한 주장을 답습하는 속칭 강단사학계라 부르는 기존 전문가집단의 왜곡된 식민사관을 타파하기 위해 아이러니하게도 중국, 일본 학계의 편향적 주장을 반박의 용도가 아니라 그냥 문자 그대로 받아들이는 경우가 많다. 이렇게만 말하면 그들이 단순히 매우 엉성하고 빈약한 엉터리 집단인것 처럼 보일지도 모르겠다. 하지만 실제로 그들 가운데 일부는 기성 전문가집단보다 더욱 강한 배경으로 그 부분을 극복해서 우위를 점하기도 한다. 바로 자본과 정치력이다. 일부 단체는 정치가들과 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 국회에서 종종 세미나도 한다고 들었다. 국회에서 세미나하나 개최하는 것이 엄청난 혜택 같은건 아님을 잘 안다. 하지만 이른바 올바른 역사배우기란 명목하에 진행되는 행사를 통해 그들의 역사관은 정치가들에게 전달되어 사회에 어떤 방식으로든 일부라도 수용되고 합리화된다. 그들의 역사관이 뜨거운 덕분인지 어떤 형태로든 일부 대중에게는 파장이 미치는듯 하다. 가끔 정치인들이 역사토론회에서 이른바 망언을 했다고 뉴스에 뜨는 사례 가운데 일부가 바로 이러한 행사에 참석한 모습이다. 뉴스로 보는 우리입장에선 이해할수없지만 적어도 그 자리에선 그건 망언이 아니라 당연한 이야기다. 그나마 광주 민주화운동같이 정치적으로 민감한 주제정도는 되어야 기사화되지 그 외의 일은 대중이 알 도리는 없다. 하여튼 그들은 이러한 뒷배경으로 공론의 장에서 전문가집단의 연구성과를 극복하고, 때론 이겨내기까지한다. 학계가 그들을 통제해야한다고 주장하는 이들도 있지만 정치력이 보장하는 대중 동원력 앞에서는 솔직히 방법이 없어보인다. 여기에 추가로 자신들의 주장을 보강해줄 소수파의 전문가까지 나타나준다면 금상첨화다. 연구자들이 언제나 의견이 항상 일치할리도 없고, 옳고 그르고를 떠나 자신만의 해석을 주장하는것은 학계에서 당연한 일이다. 마음에 드는 해석이 나왔을때는 전문가를 싫어하는 그들도 이때만큼은 빠르게 그것을 취하고 필요에 따라 빠르게 재조립한다. 보통은 이런경우 학자들의 주장이 온전히 인용되는 것도 아니라 골치아파하는 경우도 많지만 그중 일부는 그냥 재야사학계와 좀 더 적극적인 인연을 맺는 경우도 있다. 그들이 주최한 세미나에 참석하며 전문가로서 소견을 내놓고 또 신문에 논설로 학계 인물을 저격하기도 한다. 전문가라는 지위를 상징하는 그의 학위나 직위는 이때만큼은 빛나는 왕관이 된다. 더욱이 그 사람이 젊으면 더더욱 좋다. 그들의 이런 모습은 그들의 또다른 고질적인 약점을 잘 보여준다. 바로 신규유입의 부족이다. 앞서 의용대분들이 모두 나이가 지긋하신분들이란 점을 언급했는데, 이러한 계통에 계신 분들의 대다수가 연로하다. 따라서 그들 입장에선 젊은피가 수혈되어야하는데 일단 역사라는게 이미 사회에서는 밥줄로는 마이너인건 공공연한 사실 아닌가. 그나마 그 가시밭길을 선택한 젊은이들, 바로 각 대학의 대학원생들 역시 그곳에 갔다가 학계에 소문나면 무슨 눈총을 받을지 잘 아는데 거쳐가는 곳으로라도 쉬이 선택하긴 어렵다. 그래서 일부 잘나가는 단체에서는 이 분야치곤 비교적 좋은 조건으로 일자리를 권유하기도한다고 들었다. 하지만 그곳에도 역시 젊은이들은 별로 없다고 한다. 하긴 석사생들 입장에서는 차라리 역사공부를 때려치고 다른 일을 하는게 더 나을지도 모르니깐 말이다. 젊은 피가 부족한 탓일까. 대신 그 연세에도 참으로 열정적인 분들이 많아 보였다. 앞선 내용을 상기해보자. 전문가집단이 주최한 시민강좌의 참석자 대부분이 그들이었다는건을. 사실 인문계열에서 대중을 겨냥한 공개 강좌류는 보통 비인기다. 자본투입도 적어 홍보도 잘 안되고 대중의 관심과는 유리되는 경우도 많다. 그런 곳에 자리를 채우고 나쁜 의미일지라도 관심을 꾸준히 보내는 이들이 바로 그들인 것이다. 그들 입장에서 생각해보면 자랑스러운 한반도의 역사가 전문가들의 드라이한 주장에 의해 폄하되는 느낌을 많이 받고 있을 것 같다. 한번 그들의 주장이 적힌 여러 글을 읽고 상상해보았다. 일단 자신이 보기에 중국의 왜곡된 전래문헌 가운데서도 감출수없는 진정한 진실이 발견되고있고, 그 실마리를 토대로 왜곡된 우리역사를 밝혀내야할 필요성이 있을것이다. 그런데 그들은 이미 그 내용들은 수십, 수백년전 정리된 내용이라며 다른 이야기에 관심을 기울인다. 자신들이 보았을땐 전공자들이 한문을 잘 몰라 해석을 잘못한것으로 보이는 부분도 종종 보인다. 그리고 중국은 동북공정이라는 이름만 들어도 사악한 프로젝트를 실시하며 한반도의 역사를 강탈하려하는데 학계인들은 그거 일부는 맞다 이러고 있고 또 일본에서는 한국 역사를 비하하기위해 총력을 다하는데 일견 그 의견을 수용하고 있는것처럼 보인다. 이렇게 생각하니 배신감도 느껴질것이다. 그러니 우리가 그들을 꾸짖고 진실을 알려야한다고 생각할 것이다. 우리의 역사는 자랑스러우며 빼앗겨선 안된다고 느끼고 있을 것이다. 그렇기에 그날 강좌에 참석한 이들도 의용대를 자처했을 것이다. 이리 생각해보고나니 그들입장에서는 그러한 사고와 항의가 당연한 이야기일 것이고, 오해가 발생하는 지점이 어디이며 왜 생기는지 어느정도까진 납득 된다. 실제로 오역논란만 하더라도 연구자들 사이에서도 항상 문제니깐 말이다. 천년도 전에 쓰였다고 전해지는 문헌이 명확하게 해석되는거 자체가 더 이상한 일 아니겠는가. 물론 이렇게 역지사지한다고 해서 내가 그들의 주장에 동의하냐한다면 당연히 No다. 애초에 그들에게 싫은 감정을 느끼는 이유자체가 스스로가 역사를 원인-결과라는 직선적 구조와 선악개념 등의 흑백론적으로 이해하는 방식 자체를 선호하지않기 때문이다. 하지만 그들의 입장을 조금이라도 생각해보고 상상으로라도 써본 까닭은 나 역시 그들을 단순히 악마화시키고싶지않았기 때문이다. 그들이 재야사학계로 총칭되지만 사실 통일된 동맹세력도 아니기에 서로 충돌하는 모습도 종종 보이고, 위에서 언급한 정치세력과의 우호나 좋은 일자리 제공 역시 소수의 단체만이 가능한 일이다. 연구소니 뭐니 이름을 붙이곤 있지만 기업화 한 곳보단 일종의 시민단체적 성격이 강한 곳이 더 많다는걸 생각하면 당연한 일이다. 다른 분야의 시민단체간의 규모 및 발언력 차이를 생각하면 잘 와닿을 것이다. 이러니 위의 사례를 모두 그들에게 동일하게 적용하긴 힘들것이다. 아, 하나 가능한 것은 있을지도 모른다. 그들은 이세상 누구보다도 역사에 관심이 많은 이들이란 것을. 최대한 드라이하게 서술해보고 싶어서 수필스타일로 쓰고자 노력했다. 그럼에도 다른분들이 이 글을 읽고 그들이 악마처럼 보인다면 그것은 내 못난 마음씨와 글솜씨가 만들어낸 환영이 투영된 탓일것이다. 그들에 대한 폭로나 그런것보다는 그냥 역사가 좋아서 그 길에 있었을 무렵에 보았던 한 풍경에 대해 이야기하고 싶었을 따름이다. *
