역사의 종언이라는 논문이 뭐라고 말했는지 이제와서 굳이 찾아볼 가치야 없겠지만, 정치-경제를 중심으로 한 이데올로기 담론의 시대는 아무래도 이젠 별 매력이 없습니다. 글로벌 자본주의는 언뜻 모순을 드러내는 듯 하지만 그 몰락을 신나하는 목소리가 채 다 나오기도 전에 신속하게 상처를 회복하니까요. 오늘날 미중의 맞섬은 글로벌 자본주의의 흐름을 어떻게 타고 그 주도권을 잡을지에 대한 시시콜콜한 분쟁일 뿐, 서로를 뿔달린 악마로 여기는 분리이격된 세계 간의 대결이었던 냉전과는 차원이 다르죠. 미국 문화 향유하지 않는 중국인이 몇이나 있겠으며 중국 물품 안쓰는 미국인이 어디에 있겠습니까. 사실 주가가 떨어지는 것이 무섭지 어떤 지구 체제적인 대격변은 없으리란 것은 다들 동의하고 있고요. 모두가 미국인이자 중국인이며 글로벌 자본주의의 원인이자 결과인 이 세계에서는 전통적인 계급 구도도 희미해집니다. 모든 인간이 자기 자신의 경영자가 되어야 하는 오늘날 프롤레타리아라 부를 수 있는 계층은 얼마나 될까요? 제 눈에는 저임금에 종사하나 결코 계급으로서 결집하지 못할 룸펜과 일부가 노동 계급임을 내세우는 프티 부르주아, 그리고 인플루언서만이 보이네요. 역사는 물론 종언되지 않았습니다. 정치-경제적인 부분 바깥에서 움직일 뿐. 선진국 사회, 심지어는 그 문화의 영향을 받는 상당수 중진국에서 공통적으로 일어나는 출산율 저하 현상에서 이것을 읽을 수 있습니다. 저는 이것을 사회주의와 반사회주의의 시소게임이라고 표현합니다. 가방끈이 짧아 제멋대로 붙인 표현입니다. 물론 여기서의 사회주의는 정치경제적인 Socialism이 아닙니다. 레비스트로스가 친족의 존재 이유를 친족의 재생산이라 이른 것처럼 사회는 사회를 유지하기 위해 사회적으로 유지되어야 한다는 주장의 총체를 뜻하죠. (역시 맑스-레닌주의도 큰 틀에서 여기 포함되지만) 당연히 반사회주의는 이 반대죠. 나 자신의 행복이 먼저, 자기실현 등의 광고틱한 구호부터 사회는 나를 해하려 할 뿐이며 창조성을 잃게 하고 규격화시킬 뿐이라는 과격한 주장까지 그 스펙트럼은 매우 넓습니다. [인간이 된다는 것은 법칙에 굴종하지 않음을 의미한다 ㅡ조르주 바타유] 지금껏 사회라는 것이 유지될 수 있었던 이유는 물론 사회주의가 반사회주의를 압도했기 때문입니다. 게다가 달리 표현할 길이 없어 반-사회주의지 이것이 반사회-주의는 아니므로 이들도 대부분 정상적인 교육 루트를 밟고 자손을 낳았으니까요. 개인주의자가 서구 사회의 디폴트인 지금도 사회를 긍정적인 것으로 여기고 그 안에서 살고자 하는 사람이 훨씬 더 많습니다. (그리고 이것이 제가 개인주의-공동체주의라는 표현을 쓰지 않은 이유죠. 보다 본질적인 문제이므로.) 그런데 우리가 주로 알고 있는 것은 반사회주의자들의 이름이지요. 니체, 카뮈, (특히 "지하생활자의 수기"에서 드러나는) 도스토예프스키 같은 걸출한 이름부터 68혁명으로 대두한 신좌파들과 그들을 비꼬는 데 도가 튼 미셸 우엘벡, 사회적 연대를 우습게 여기고 너 자신을 성장시키라는 신자유주의 CEO들까지. 각자 입장은 다르지만 사회를 극복해야 할 것으로 여기거나 그것에 압도되는 모습을 맛깔나게 표현하는 이들의 맹활약 덕에 반사회주의와 사회주의의 스펙트럼 자체가 이동하게 된 것입니다. 그러니까 -50과 50이 각각 반사회주의적 입장과 사회주의적 입장의 극한이었다면 지금은 -80과 30 정도가 되었달까나요. 아마 19세기엔 방에만 틀어박히거나 일터만 겨우 왕복하며 아무하고도 소통하지 않는 사람을 광인 취급했을 테지만 21세기엔 드물지 않은 인간상이고, 반대로 네오 나치 등의 파시스트들도 '개인의 자유'라는 말을 쓰는데 서슴없고 일상에서도 개인주의적으로 행동하니까요. 이에 반해 사회주의자나 사회주의적 발언은 참 찾기가 힘듭니다. 거슬러 올라가면 헤겔이 그랬다더라 사회운동가 누가 그랬다더라 운운할 수 있지만 공산주의가 몰락한지도 한 세대가 넘어가는 마당에 지금 개인보다 사회를 중시하자는 말을 잘못했다간 돌팔매질을 당할테니까요. 여전히 많은 사람들의 가슴 속에는 사회가 사회답게 기능하길 바라는 마음이 조금씩 있지만 그것이 개인주의를 침해하는 것으로 보여지는 것은 무엇보다 꺼리기에 어중간하게 말할 수밖에도 없죠. 출산율 담론에서 그것을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 요즘 사람들이 결혼도 안하고 아이도 안갖는 현실이 안타깝다며 전체적인 도표를 보곤 한숨을 푹푹 쉬지만 절대로 독신자나 딩크족을 비난하지는 못하니, 공통의 씹을 거리인 정부로 화젯거리를 돌리니까요. 마치 경제만이 비혼과 비자녀의 전적인 원인이고 그 책임 또한 정부에게 전적으로 있는 것처럼. 매우 큰 요인이라는 것까진 부정하지 않겠으나, 솔직히 좀 속이 보이죠. 정부는 일반적으로 국민의 일반의지를 대표할지언대, 과연 한국 국민의 일반의지에는 출산율과 청년 문제가 포함되어 있다 말할 수 있는지? 사회주의자들이 사회주의적 의견을 당당히 말하지 못하고 샤이하게 수군대는 꼰대가 되는 것은 이같은 무책임함 때문입니다. 원초적인 반사회주의자로서 오직 단 한 사람만의 참된 사회주의자를 압니다. 일본의 우치다 타츠루라는 노교수는 그의 모든 저서와 강연에서 빠꾸없이 말합니다. 자립을 전적으로 강조하는 현대 문화가 사회를 망치고야 말았다고. 현대인은 성공과 실패 등 모든 결과를 자기 자신의 책임으로 돌리기로 결정했기 때문에, 인맥도 처세술도 없어 이 게임에서 거의 패배할 수밖에 없는 젊은 노동자들이 만성적 열패감에 놓이고 원자화되는 것을 방치해버렸다고. 극소수의 강한 개인을 빼면 혼자서도 잘 산다는 건 결코 자랑거리가 아니라고. 너 자신이 누구인가에 대한 해답은 너 스스로에게 있는 것이 아니라 너를 둘러싼 네트워크에 있다고. 현대 사회가 리스크 사회인 건 맞지만, 그래서 각자도생 해야 한다는 사람들이 더더욱 리스크 사회를 확장하는 데 기여하는 것이라고. 제가 보기에 이 얼핏 꼰대스러운 분석들은 현대 사회의 실패를 경제와 정부에 돌리는 시각의 부족한 점을 완전하게 채워줍니다. 경제주의자들은 집을 살 수 있다는 희망이 있다면, 보육비와 교육비의 부담 없이 아이를 양육할 수 있다면 출산율이 회복할 것이라는 전제를 깝니다. 뭐 그게 틀린 말은 아닐 겁니다. 분명 돈만 어떻게든 있으면 결혼도 하고 싶고 아이도 갖고 싶다는 이야기를 하는 젊은이들이 아직 그렇게 적진 않으니까요. 그런데 그런 것을 할 수 있다 내지 하고 싶다 라는 정서를 아예 상실한, 저같은 만성적 열패감의 젊은 저임금 노동자는 경제적 여유가 생기면 사회적 재생산에 참여하는 바보짓을 하기보다 보다 더 욜로할 여유를 누림에 기쁠 것 같거든요. 연애나 반려동물 정도는 고려 범위에 넣을 거 같지만, 그 이상은 전혀 의사가 없고. 그러니 신혼부부나 유자녀에 한정한 어떤 혜택에도 그것이 별로 유인이 되지 않고 도리어 적개심만 안들면 다행. 분명 이게 떠올리지 못할 정도로 별난 성향도 아닐 것인데, 말로는 돈 때문이라고 하더라도 막상 조금의 여유에 만족하지 못하며 아직 부족하다고만 하다가 때를 놓치고 핑계댈 사람도 많을 것인데, 경제는 2차 문제고 진짜 문제는 기준점의 이동이라는 사실을 경제주의자들은 간과하는 것이죠. 개인사를 생각하면 조금 심술나기까지 해요. 학창시절 내내 좋은 학교에 가야 좋은 회사에 들어가고 좋은 회사에 들어가야 좋은 배우자를 얻을 수 있고 그것이 좋은 삶이라는 소리를 달고 살았는데, 압박감 때문이 아니라 그 정태적인 흐름 자체가 너무 버틸 수 없는 것이라 뛰쳐나왔지만 '좋은 삶'을 살지 않기로 결정한 지금 무엇을 사랑하는 법도 감사하는 법도 알지 못하겠는데, 나는 늘 내가 느끼고 좋아하는 것을 다른 사람과 공유하지 못해 힘들어 했는데, 이제와서는 젊은이들이 결혼과 육아를 생각하지 않는 것은 오로지 정부와 경제 때문이라고? 저 자들은 정말로 그게 다라고 생각한단 말인가? 하는. 우치다를 참된 사회주의자라 제가 이르는 이유는 프론티어 정신, 리더쉽, 창조적 사고 따위를 읊어대는 무책임한 노인네들이나 자기경영 CEO들과 질적으로 다르기 때문입니다. 도리어 그는 이렇게 말합니다. 쉼 없는 창조를 계속해야만 하는 창조적 노동자들이 침묵과 무위에 빠지는 것은 당연한 일이 아니겠냐고. 저는 니체의 '예술가나 철학자로서, 더 우수한 인간은 창조해야 한다'는 메모를 좋아하지만, '창조로 인해 고뇌한다고 해봐야 남이 부탁도 하지 않은 일에 열을 올리는 괴짜일 뿐 아닌가?'라는 말에 정곡을 찔릴 수밖에 없었지요. 생각할 수록 쓴웃음이 나오는 겁니다. 우리 세대에 있어 경쟁을 뚫고 성공하라는 신자유주의 프로파간다에 대응할 방법이라곤 '수고했어 오늘도' 류의 힐링 컨텐츠로 퇴각하는 길밖엔 없었으니까요. 다시 말해 그는 '약자의 철학'이 부재한 세상을 지적하는 것이죠. 듣다보면 언젠가 질리게 될 노랫말 대신 약자와 실패자들이 함께 살아가기 위한 행동양식의 근본을. 그는 노동의 의미를 바로세워야 한다고 말합니다. 성과로서가 아니라 노동 그 자체가 지닌 헤겔적 주체성과 성취감의 의미를. 회사나 사회에 가치를 인정받는 '쓸모있는 인간'으로서가 아니라 사랑받음으로써 사랑하게 되듯 노동하는 인간으로서 타자와 공유해야 함을. 그러니 인간이 노동을 왜 해야 하는지의 의미는 노동을 통해서만 이해할 수밖에 없다고. 그는 '자신의 연봉을 조금 줄이더라도 스태프의 급여를 늘려달라'고 요청했다던 야구선수 가네모토 도모아키의 일화를 인용하는데, 마침 얼마전 만화가 김성모가 혈맹으로 칭하는 오랜 어시들에게 집을 해줬다는 이야기와 오버랩되네요. 이는 가진자의 플렉스같은 것이 아니라 [나의 성공을 내 일처럼 기뻐해주는 인간의 수를 하나라도 늘리는 것]이 동기부여에 그 어떠한 성취 자체보다도 중요하기 때문이라는 것입니다. 그렇게 보면 우리가 결코 받아들이지 못하는 흑인이나 중남미 스포츠선수들 주변의 호미(homie) 문화도 조금은 이해할 수가 있죠. 내 성공의 열매를 나 혼자 독점해서는 안되는 것이 원래는 인류에게 '상식'이었다는 것입니다. 그의 눈에는 공산주의는 인간의 욕망이라는 상식을 무시해서 쇠망했다는 말을 하는 사람들도 똑같은 반쪽짜리로 보이겠죠. 애석한 것은 이 노교수의 줏대있는 분석에 무릎을 탁 치면서도 저는 반사회주의자로서 사고하는 일을 결코 멈추지 않을 것이란 점입니다. 소위 선진 사회에서, 20세기 후반과 21세기의 반사회주의적 흐름은 돌이킬 수 없을 정도로 멀리 왔으니까요. 소공동체가 거의 와해된 한국의 도심지는 그 선두에 있고. 일본의 저 노교수는 물론 세계의 구조적인 오류를 논하는 기라성같은 이론가와 운동가들도 무한경쟁 사회와 그 반작용인 원자 사회라는 흐름을 뒤집지 못할진대, 유일한 길은 이 미래가 예상되는 세상에서 어떻게 적응해 나가야 할 것인가라는 질문에 있을 뿐이니까요. 그래도 최소한, 외국의 미담을 두고 미담 자체를 기뻐하지 못하고 '한국에선 민원이 어쩌구 저쩌구' '헬적화가 덜 되어서' 등등 저신뢰사회라는 이유로 저신뢰하는 것에 스스로 전혀 거리낌이 없는 자들 정도로 추해질 순 없죠. 제게 영감을 준 반사회주의자 중 하나인 혼다 토오루(필명)라는 양반은 '주류 정신에 맞서 정신적 순결을 지키고자 하는 행위'를 '호신'이라 일컬었는데, 주류적 삶을 거부하는 것만큼이나 악의에 침식된 마귀같은 아웃사이더들 또한 거부하는 것 역시 이에 속합니다. 그렇다면 지금부터 또 한 세대가 지나면 세계는 반사회주의가 완전히 장악한 채 어떠한 공동체적 변화도 바랄 수 없게 될까요? 미래를 쉬이 예단할 수는 없는 법이죠. 그러나 사회주의의 그늘에서 반사회주의가 스멀스멀 자라나 결국 지금의 세상을 만들어 낸 것처럼, 반사회주의가 기본적 정서로 완성된 세상이 오면 많은 사람들의 속에 가려진 사회주의로의 노스탤지어가 다시 솟아오를 수도 있겠죠. 미셸 우엘벡의 "복종"은 그러한 미래에 대한 우화입니다. 얼핏 이 소설은 서구 문명의 침식된 틈을 이슬람이라는 마의 세력이 침투하는 것에 대한 공포심을 자극하는 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 여기서 이슬람은 사회적 재생산주의, 소공동체주의, 보수적 성역할론을 대표하는 장치입니다. 이 이야기 속 프랑스는 너무나도 평온한 과정을 통해 이슬람주의 정권이 들어서게 되지만, 그것은 인구학적인 문명 충돌이 아니라 좌파와 우파, 극우파 간의 정쟁이 채워주지 못하는 어떤 갈망을 이슬람-종교적 보수주의가 섬세하게 파고들었기 때문으로 묘사됩니다. 미국의 철학자 마크 릴라는 논평합니다. [새 소설이 나올 때마다 우엘벡은 결정적인 역사적 전환점이 훨씬 더 이른 시기에 있었다고 생각하고 있음이 분명해진다. 그는 이제 우리의 곤경은 계몽주의가 유기적 총체였던 중세 사회를 공격하고 기술적 진보를 맹목적으로 추구한 데서 시작했다고 생각한다. ... ... 미셸 우엘벡은 화가 난 것이 아니다. 그는 프랑스가 애석하게도 돌이킬 수 없을 정도로 자아 감각을 상실한 상태라고 진심으로 믿고 있는듯 하다. ... ... 두 세기 전 유럽인들은 역사에 내기를 걸었다. 인간의 자유를 확대하면 확대할수록 더 행복해질 것이라고 말이다. 그가 보기에 그 내기는 진 상태다. 그리고 그렇게 해서 이 대륙은 표류하면서 훨씬 더 오래된 유혹에 쉽게 넘어가버릴 지경이 되었다.] [이런저런 정부정책이나 이런저런 개혁에 논의의 초점을 맞추는 것은 이 참극의 규모가 어느 정도인지 그저 눈을 감고 있겠다는 뜻이다. 우리는 더는 우리의 운명을 통제하지 못한다. 바로 이것이 이 문제의 진실이다. 우리가 비로소 깨달은 상황은 프랑스를, 어쩌면 서구 문명 전체를 파국의 경로에 기어코 들어서게 만든 비참한 정치적•문화적 실책들이 빚어낸 예견된 결과다. 그리고 이제 그 계산서가 도착한 것이다. ㅡ"난파된 정신"에서] 우치다 타츠루는 기성세대라 할 만한 이들 중 거의 유일하다시피 시대의 문제점을 포착한 사람으로 높이 평가하지만, 그는 사회 전체가 힘을 합치면 세상을 아직은 올바르게 되돌릴 수 있다는 희망을 갖고 있는 듯 합니다. 하지만 우리 반사회주의자들은 대체로 비관론자로, 그런 일이 일어나지 않을 것임을 잘 압니다. 우치다가 주장하는 헤겔적인 노동의 가치가 회복되려면 국가도 기업도 일하는 사람도 너나 할 것 없이 발상의 전환을 행해야 하죠. 그러나 경쟁 사회라는 것은 다같이 경쟁을 그만하자~라고 해서 멈출 수 있는 것이 아닌 바, 우리 앞에는 노동이 너희를 자유롭게 하리라는 수용소의 표어가 여전히 무겁게 자리하고 있을 것일테니 말입니다. 그래서 우치다의 희망적 사회주의보다 우엘벡이 페미니즘과 다문화주의, 소수자 운동, 생태주의 등의 시대 뒤에 도래할 것을 예언한 음울한 사회주의의 시나리오가 더 현실적으로 다가오지요. 결국에는 이 말만을 남길 뿐입니다.
