* 자기 전에 가볍게 쓰는 글입니다.  사진은 조선왕릉 앞에서 제사를 지내는 건물, [정자각]입니다. 경치 좋은 곳에 설치된 停子閣이 아니고 T자형 평면을 가진 丁字閣입니다. 지붕 위의 허연 마감이 눈에 띄는데 이것은 [양성바름]이라고 하는 것입니다. 궁궐의 정전이나 침전, 정문, 도성문, 일부 관영건축에서 보이고 건축물의 권위를 상징합니다. 경복궁 등 궁궐에서 한 번쯤 보셨을 것 같습니다. 한데 내림마루 위를 보면 이상한 토우 같은 것이 보입니다. 특수기와로 [잡상(雜像)]이라고 하는 것으로 종류는 총 10가지입니다. 기록마다 조금씩 차이는 있지만 놓이는 순서가 대체로 정해져 있습니다. 그 뒤로 용머리를 한 용두 또는 독수리 모양의 취두 등이 놓이기도 하지만 여기서는 패스하겠습니다. 아무튼 내림마루나 추녀마루의 길이에 따라 잡상 수가 달라지는데 최소 3개 정도는 놓이게 됩니다. 확대해서 보면 다음과 같습니다.  맨 앞 '녀석'은 뭘로 보이시나요? 17세기 초에 지어진 <어우야담>에는 '대당사부(大唐師父)'라고 나와 있습니다. 네, 그 유명한 <서유기>의 삼장법사 현장이죠. 그러면 그 다음 녀석들 이름도 대강 짐작이 되시겠네요. 손오공, 저팔계, 사오정입니다. 손행자(孫行者), 저팔계(猪八戒), 사화상(獅晝像)라고 표기되어 있어요. 정자각에는 없지만 그 다음에는 차례대로 마화상, 삼살보살, 이구룡, 천산갑, 이귀박, 나토두(귀찮으니 한자는 패스)가 있습니다. 20세기 초 기록인 <상와도>에는 그림도 나와 있습니다. 개수는 <어우야담>과 같은데 이름이 조금 다릅니다.  출처: <한국건축용어사전> 그런데 말이죠. 맨 앞 '분'이 정말로 삼장법사로 보이십니까? 몽골식 삿갓을 쓰고 갑옷을 입은 모습을 보면 영락없는 군인 아닙니까? 그리고 철저한 숭유국가 조선에서 불교 인물을 권위 건축물 위에 올려두었다는 게 믿기 어렵잖아요. 17세기 중반에 간행된 <창덕궁수리도감의궤>에 보면 잡상의 이름이 제법 다릅니다. 손행자, 손행자매, 준견, 준구, 마룡, 산화승, 악구 등으로 나와 있어요. 손오공만 그대로네요. 손오공의 성격을 생각해 보면 갑옷을 두른 모습이 그럴 듯하게 보이기도 합니다. 그런데 다시 두 번째 사진으로 넘어가서, 정자각의 세 번째 코를 보면 아무래도 개보다는 돼지를 묘사한 게 맞는 것 같잖아요. 알쏭달쏭합니다. 사실 이 잡상에 대해서는 아직 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 못한 상태입니다. 잡상 개개의 의미에 대해서 잘 모르는 것은 물론이고, 고려 이전에는 잡상이 놓였다는 명확한 사료나 유물도 발견되지 않았습니다. 조선시대부터 놓인 것만 확실하게 알려져 있습니다. 왜 <서유기>의 등장인물 이름이 붙었는지도 모릅니다. 국내에 <서유기>가 유입된 것은 여말선초 무렵으로 알려져 있습니다. 불교적 색채에 괴력난신이 판치는 <서유기>는 공식적으로 배척됐을 것이나, 사대부를 비롯 일반 백성에까지 어느 정도 인기가 있었고 이것이 잡상의 명명에 영향을 미쳤을 것입니다. 화마를 제압한다는 의미에서 벽사의 내용이 들어있는 <서유기>가 연결되고, 자연스레 소설의 등장인물 이름이 잡상 하나하나에 붙었을 수도 있겠죠.
