저는 특별한 사람이 아니에요. 동네, 학교 단위 자랑거리 한둘은 있지만, 만인에게 내세울 대단한 점은 없는, 어디에나 있을법한 지극히 평범한 사람이에요. 하지만 그런 제게도 딱 하나, 5천만 한국인은 물론 60억 세계인에게 당당하게 1등이라고 말할 수 있는 자랑거리 하나가 있습니다. 바로 가정환경, 그리고 그걸 만들어주신 부모님이에요. 그렇게 가정환경이 좋았는데 왜 아웃풋이 고작 너야? 라고 하실수도 있을거에요. 하지만 지금 말하고자 하는건 손흥민, 장나라같은 엄청난 성공을 달성하기 위한 열성적 지원이 아니에요. 사실 르브론 제임스 같은 케이스를 보면 특급 인재들은 환경만큼이나 타고난 재능의 영향을 많이 받기도 하구요. 제가 말하고자 하는것은 좀 더 근본적인거에요. 갓난쟁이가 어린이가 되고, 어린이가 청소년, 성인이 되기까지 가정에서 반드시 해줘야 할 것들. '성공한 사람'이 되는게 아닌, '사람'이 되는데에 필요한 것들. 정말 중요함에도 불구하고 어느 시대 어느 문화권에서나 쉽게 경시되고, 많은 사람들을 아픔과 고통으로 내모는, 그런것들에 대한 이야기요. 믿음 30년 살아오는 동안 아버지를 1년에 1달 이상 본 해가 거의 없어요. 몇번 얘기했지만 아버지는 가정을 꾸리고도 개인의 입신양명의 꿈을 버리지 못했거든요. 출장은 기본, 목이 좋은 곳에서 장사를 하겠다고 KTX도 없는 시절 고속버스로 집에서 4시간 거리나 되는 곳에 가게를 차리기도 했죠. 결과적으로 돈이라도 벌었냐면 그렇지도 않았어요. 사업은 실패하기 일수, 장사나 주식에도 재주가 없으셨죠. 오히려 집의 돈을 가져다 쓰는 경우가 더 많았고, 어머니는 아버지를 한심해했고, 동생은 한때 매우 미워하기도 했죠. 지금도 조금은 그렇고,. 다만 어머니는 아버지를 한심해할 지언정 미워하지는 않았는데, 이렇듯 객관적으로 좋은 남편, 좋은 아빠는 절대 아닌 사람이었지만, 그렇다고 나쁜 사람은 아니었기 때문이에요. 표현이 서투른 옛날 남자라 툴툴대고, 분위기를 서먹서먹하게 만든적도 셀수도 없이 많았지만, 32년 결혼 생활 동안 가족에게 단 한번도 손찌검은 물론 큰 소리 한번 치지 않았으니까요. 어머니가 원망을 토하고 동생이 무시해도, 아버지는 한숨을 쉬고 자리를 뜰 지언정, 단 한번도 언성을 높이거나 화를 내지 않았어요. 각설하고, 그렇게 가끔 보는 아버지와 어쩌다 한두번 갖는 부자만의 시간속, 아버지의 말과 행동에서 사랑과 미안함도 물론 느낄 수 있었지만, 그것보다도 훨씬 큰 무언가를 매번 느낄 수 있었는데, 그건 바로 아주 강한 '믿음'이었어요.. 아버지는 수첩에 해줄말을 가득 적어서 이런게 요새 트렌드라더라, 요새 니 나이대엔 이런게 좋고 나쁘다더라. 하며 내게 정말 많은 얘기를 해주려 하셨으면서도, 정작 내가 요새 어떻게 살고 있는지는 거의 궁금해하지 않으셨어요. 매번 제게 묻는것은 단 하나 뿐. '잘 하고 있지?', 그리고 제 대답은 항상 '물론이죠' 라고 였어요. '엄마랑 동생 잘 보살필 수 있지?' '물론이죠. 내가 누군데요.' 그렇게 저는 어릴적부터 '아빠 대행'이 되었어요. 가족끼리 문제가 생기면 가장 끝까지 인내심을 가지고 일을 매조지 하는 사람, 가장 늦게 잠들고 가장 일찍 일어나는 사람. 말이 그렇다는거지 당연히 그럴 능력은 없어서 실제로 그렇게 하진 못했지만요. 늦게 자야지 하다가도 10시만 되면 풀썩 잠들어서 어머니께서 와서 이불을 덮어주셨고, 가끔은 너무 힘들어서 울고 떼쓰기도 했지만, 그래도 마음속에선 이 집을 책임질 사람이었고, 아버지의 빈 자리를 채워야 하고, 할 수 있다는 스스로에 대한 자신감과 믿음을 가질 수 있었죠. 아버지가 부족한점은 많지만 나와의 궁합이 잘 맞는 사람이라면, 어머니는 좀 달라요. 아버지가 없는거나 다름 없는 집에서 홀로 남은 어른으로서 살림과 직장생활을 병행하면서도 죽는 소리 한번 안내고 꿋꿋히 32년을 버텨오신, 여느 집 어머니들에게 흔히 붙는 수식어지만, 정말 초인과 같은 사람. 어머니께서도 역시 절 많이 믿어주셨지만, 그 형태는 아버지와는 조금 달랐어요. 아버지의 믿음이 '안 봐도 잘할 것' 이라는 믿음이었다면, 어머니의 믿음은 '뭘하건 쟤가 하는건 무조건 좋은거다' 이라는 믿음, 그러니까 좀 더 종교적이고 맹목적인것에 가까웠어요. 고백을 하나 하자면, 기행을 정말 많이 했어요. 학원에서 선행학습을 하겠다고 중학교 수업을 1달 가까이 째기도 하고, 힘들게 들어간 학교를 돈부터 벌고 다니겠다고 바로 휴학을 하기도 하고, 미성년자 신분으로 밤새 친구와 술을 먹겠다고 모텔방을 잡아달라고도 했고, 잘 다니던 직장을 때려치고 뭔가 도전해보겠다고 연 천만원 넘는 연봉을 깎아가며 이직을 하기도 했죠. 위와 같은 평범에서 많이 벗어난 기행을 하면서도 한번도 허락을 받아본적이 없어요. 물론 상의는 매번 드렸고, 우려를 하신적도 있지만, 결국 내 행동의 최종적인 결정권자는 언제나 나였고, 한번도 키를 뺏지 않으셨죠. 제 담대한 제안에 선생님, 사장님들이 놀라서 '어머니께 전화하겠다' 라고 할때 나는 항상 자신감에 차서 '해보세요!' 라고 답했고 어머니는 그분들에게 아들에 대한 절대적인 신뢰를 잘 풀어서 얘기해주셨고, 수월하게 다른 어른들의 허락도 받을 수 있었어요. 고등학생때 좋은 대학에 가서 좋은 회사에 다녀서 돈을 많이 벌겠다는 목표를 가지고 있었는데, 고민 끝에 고등학교 2학년때 어머니께 수능 100% 우선 선발 전형을 노리고, 내신은 버리겠다고 말씀드렸어요. 3년 내내 내신 4~5등급을 맞는 절 보며 어머니는 단 한번도 괜찮은거 맞냐고 묻거나 보채고 다그치지 않으셨고, 많은 위기 속에서도 스스로를 믿고 계획한대로 수능 성적으로 목표한 대학을 갈 수 있었어요. 절대적인 내 편의 신뢰는 사람을 아주 강하게 만들어줘요. 사소한 실패 몇번에도 흔들리지 않게 해주고, 자잘한 상처에 큰 데미지를 입지 않고 금방 오뚝 일어나게 만들어주죠. 유산 50억을 물려줘도 실패했을때 어떻게 살아야 할지 알려주지 않으면 5억짜리 사업 10번 실패했을때 거기서 인생 끝이에요. 하지만 절대적으로 믿어주는 사람이 있는 사람은 이건 끝났다 싶은 상황에도 9 카운트에 일어나 다음 라운드를 보고 가드를 올립니다. 나는 할 수 있는 사람이니까. 사랑의 표현 몇번 쓴 글에서 대충 이야기했지만, 경제적, 정서적으로 그렇게 대단히 좋은 환경에서 유년기를 보내지 못했어요. 채 열살도 되기전에 부모님이 집에 두분 다 안 들어오시는 날도 많았고, 갖고 싶은게 열개가 있으면 그 중 아홉개는 내게 당연히 포기해야 하는 것이고, 가장 갖고 싶은것 하나는 정말 운이 좋으면 어쩌다 갖게 되는것이었죠. 이사도 잦았고, 이사 할때마다 집이 더 안 좋아지기도 했고, 그 와중에 온 행운으로 얻은 집을 부동산 투자 실패로 날리기도 했죠. 할머니 댁 지하실 단칸방에서 퀴퀴한 지하실 냄새를 맡으며 몇달 살기도 하고, 그랬죠. 수업 참관이나 학부모 회의는 기대하지도 못했고, 부모님 두분 다 만나보신 학교 선생님은 한분도 안 계시고, 어머니 회라던가 네트워크, 뭐 그런걸 기대할 수도 없었어요. 아버지는 아버지의 인생을 사셨고, 어머니는 너무 바빴으니까. 그럼에도 불구하고 저의 유년기에 대한 기억은 아주 좋게만 남아 있어요. 왜냐면 알았어요. 원하는걸 하나도 사주지 못하고, 함께 시간을 그렇게 오래 보내지 못했음에도 불구하고, 그 누구보다도 가족에게 사랑받고 있다는것을요. 이유는 간단해요. 표현했으니까. 말로, 글로, 행동으로, 수도 없이요. 물론 아버지도 -술먹은 날 한정이었지만- 다른 아버지들보다는 사랑한다는 말을 많이 해주셨고, 어머니는 아예 달고 사셨어요. 사랑하는 아들, 딸. 내 사랑. 뭐 이렇게요. 저도 그 영향을 받아 지금도 가족들, 여자친구(전)는 물론 친구들에게도 사랑한다는 표현을 정말 많이 하는 편이에요. 사랑을 표현하세요. 적어도 아이들에게는요. 무엇이건간에 좋아요. 말도 좋고, 글도 좋고, 행동이나 선물같은 어떤 심볼도 괜찮아요. 사랑의 표현은 대충 보면 풍선처럼 하늘로 날아가는것 같지만, 하늘위를 조금 날다 이내 어느 한적한 들판에 차곡차곡 쌓여요. 그리고 그곳에 쌓이고 쌓인 사랑한다는 말은 언젠가 서로의 사이에 반목이 생기고, 다툼이 일어나고, 미움이 만들어 질 때, 혹은 내가 너무 지치고 아프고 모든것을 다 놓고 싶을때쯤 다시 내게 날아와 그 나쁜것들을 막아줄거에요. 동반자 꽤 많이 어릴때, 그러니까 한 6~7살부터, 나는 내가 '아이'라는 생각, 누구보다 못한 존재거나 보살핌 받아야 하는 존재라는 생각을 거의 하지 않았어요. 제 태생이 원체 건방지기도 하지만, 부모님께서 그렇게 키우기도 하셨죠. 어딜가도 나는 한명의 당당한 사회 구성원이었어요. 엄마의 아들, 아빠의 아들, 부모님 어른들 선생님 말을 잘 들어야 하는 사람이 아니라, 내가 하고 싶은 것, 내가 옳다고 생각하는것을 하는 사람이었죠. 그렇지만 특별대우를 받지도 못했어요. 친동생이나 사촌동생들보다 내가 오빠라고 내게 빵 하나를 더 주지도 않으셨고, 다른 아이들과 싸우고 왔을때도 무조건 내가 잘했다고 해주지도 않으셨죠. 그런 환경에서 자연스레 깨달았어요. '나는 이 세상 그 누구에게도 못한 사람, 아랫 사람은 아니지만, 그렇다고 더 잘난 사람, 윗 사람도 아니다' 그래서 사회에서 만난 사람들을 선배, 형, 어른이라고 모시고, 후배, 동생, 아이라고 일부러 리드하려고 하지 않으며 살고 있어요. 어디까지나 그저 같은 사람이기에 존중할뿐이죠. 물론 사회에서 정한 존중의 형태는 당연히 어느정도 따르지만, 근본은 상대가 어떤 나이의 어떤 사람이라도 같아요, 마찬가지로 사람들에게 부모님, 동생을 효도하고 모셔야 될 사람, 그리고 내가 끌어주고 뒷바라지 해줘야 될 사람이 아니라 '동반자' '동료' 라고 소개해요. '이제 대성했으니 부모님께 효도 해야지.' 아니, 난 효도 안할거에요. 늙어죽을때까지 부모님, 가족들 옆에 서서 서로 사랑하며, 서로 베풀고 서로 나누며 같이 걸을거에요. 나와 가족을 연결하는 매개체는 도리나 예절 따위가 아니에요. 수십년간 같이 쌓아온 사랑과 의리죠. 좋은 부모의 자격 "아이는 부모의 소유물이 아니다." "준비 안된 상태에서 부모가 되는건 아이에게 아주 못할짓이다" 좋은 얘기지만 이 얘기는 요새 부모들에게는 굳이 할 필요도 없다고 생각해요. 이미 최근 부모가 된 세대 사람들은 부모의 소유물로 사는 인생, 그리고 전혀 준비되지 않고 아이를 낳은 부모 밑에서 사는 인생에 대해 엄청난 스트레스를 받아본 경험이 있는 사람들이 대부분이거든요. 그래서 자신은 같은 실수를 반복하지 않겠다고 다짐했으며, 그걸 매우 잘 지키는 사람들이 많아요. 아이가 조금이라도 더 좋은 환경에서 자신이 원하는것을 하며 살 수 있도록 해주고 싶어하지만, 그 길을 강요하지는 않고, 아이가 자라면서 극도의 스트레스 환경이나 위험에 노출되는 일은 없도록 끊임없이 정보를 찾고, 찾으며, 본인들의 인생을 갈아가며 아이에게 비단길을 깔아주려고들 하죠. 그리고 그런 부모들이 너무 많기에 '육아는 세상에서 가장 힘든 일' 이라는 최근의 분위기가 만들어졌다고 생각해요. 너무 힘든거죠. 왜냐면 만점이 되어야 하거든요. 남들이 해주는건 당연히 다 해줘야 되고, 남들이 안 해주는것도 최소한 하나는 해줘야 되고, 어떤 변수에도 다 대응할 수 있어야 되고, 그런 와중에 부부 둘이 합쳐서 대출금 갚을만큼 돈도 벌어야 되고 물론 예전에도 많은 부모님들이 이런 희생속에서 삶을 사셨을거에요. 그러나 문제는 지금은 정답지를 너무 쉽게 찾을 수 있어요. 예전에는 무엇이 정답인지 확신할 수가 없기에 아이가 잘 크고 있는지 안 크고 있는지 신경쓰며 그때 그때 바른 선택을 하기 위해 노력하면 그만이지만, 이제는 폰, 컴퓨터 켜서 조금만 찾아보면 만점짜리 정답지가 나오고, 금방 채점을 통해 내 점수가 나와요. 남들은 이런거 다 하는데 나는 못해주고 있네, 83점 짜리 부모네, 나는, 나한테는 세상에서 제일 중요한 자식인데, 나는 83점 밖에 안돼. 자책하고, 더 해주려 노력하고, 내 힘이 안 닿는 부분에 있어서 좌절하니 배우자를 원망하고, 서로 스트레스 받고, 인생이 갈리고 그렇게 사는거죠. '육아의 가치를 인정해달라' 라는 주장은 필요하다고 생각해요. 95점 짜리 육아를 하는데 들이는 고통이 1000인데, 사회에서 600도 안 알아준다. 맞는 얘기에요. 근데 애초에 애초에 왜 모두 95점 짜리 부모가 되어야 하냐, 그 얘기를 하고 싶은거에요. 위에도 말했지만 사람은 그저 한명의 사람이에요. 나이가 얼마건, 나와 무슨 관계에 있건, 돈이 많건 적건, 배우기를 많이 배웠건 못 배웠건 간에, 모든 사람은 각자 자신의 신체 기관을 통해 세상을 보고 듣거나 혹은 느끼고, 자신의 머리로 생각해서, 자신의 삶을 살아요. 아이들도 마찬가지에요. 그들도 24시간을 살아요. 아무 생각 없이 천진하게 뛰 노는거 같아도 이미 3~4살만 넘어가도 아이도 부모와 똑같은 24시간을 살고 있어요. 단지 어른들이 모를뿐이죠. 아이가 무슨 생각을 하는지. 뭘 보고 느끼고 있으며, 그에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 있는지. 아이라 모르는게 아니에요. 원래 인간은 타인의 삶이 나와 같은 밀도로 같이 흘러가고 있다는것에 지극히 둔감해요. 많은 부모님들이 아이가 '갑자기 불쑥 큰다' 라는 표현을 쓰지만, 어떤 아이도 갑자기 불쑥 크지 않아요. 아침에 눈 떴을때부터 눈 감을때까지. 부모들은 고작 1학년에서 2학년이 됐다고 생각할때, 아이는 여러분하고 똑같은 밀도로 1년을 정말 많은것을 보고, 생각하며 살았기 때문에, 달라진거에요. 아이들은 부모의 생각보다 정말로 이른 나이에 어마어마하게 똑똑해지고, 정신적으로는 충분히 여러분만큼의 1인분을 할 수 있을만큼 성숙해져요. 존중과 사랑과 믿음으로 아이를 감싸되, 무슨 철갑 방주속에 꽁꽁 감춰놓을 필요는 없다고 생각해요. 물론 워낙 흉흉한 소식이 많고, 뉴스를 보다 보면 우리 아이를 이런 사회에 과연 방주 하나 안 태워서 내보내는게 맞는 선택인가? 내가 눈을 떼는게 부모로서 해야 할 짓인가? 하는 생각이 들 수도 있어요. 그러나 그것조차도 아이가 어느정도 크면 같이 할 수 있어요. 같이 조심하고, 같이 피하고, 같이 숨을 수 있어요. 5살도 안된 갓난쟁이들이야 모든걸 다 해줘야 하겠지만, 7살 8살만 넘어가도 아이 스스로도 위험을 피하는 능력을 기를 수 있게 도와주면, 정말 인생에 한두번도 안 찾아올 영화속에나 볼 위기에서도 침착하게 자기 몫을 해내요. 먹을게 없어서 간장에 밥 찍어 먹고, 혼자 동생 데리고 학교 다니고, 돈 없어서 학원 못 다니고, 급식비 없어서 애들 다 보는 앞에서 선생님한테 무상급식 신청하란 소리 듣고 빚쟁이들한테 시달려서 엄마를 이모라고도 해보고 그랬으니, 우리 부모님도 아마 요새 도는 만점짜리 성적표를 가지고 채점하면 채 80점도 될까 말까 한 분들일거에요. 하지만 그렇기에 겪었던 실패도 좌절도 포기도 위험도 상처도 아픔도 환희도 성공도 향락도, 울고 웃고 구르고 자지러지고 넘어지고 일어나고 이 모든것이 결국 아이였던 나의 삶의 일부였고, 서두에도 언급했듯이, 저는 세계 최고의 파트너인 내 가족들과 함께 인생을 살았고, 살고 있다고 생각해요. 만점을 받지 못한 많은 부모님들도 자식들에게 그런 존재가 되실 수 있다고 믿어요. * 토비님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-12-24 22:48) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
